On March 17, people around the world celebrate the Irish holiday of Saint Patrick’s Day. It is a major holiday in Ireland, but the rest of the world has influenced its celebration as much as the Irish themselves.
Most Americans think of Saint Patrick’s Day as a big party centered around drinking alcohol. But its beginnings in Ireland were religious, says Mike Cronin, a professor of Irish history with Boston College of Massachusetts.
Ireland is a mostly Roman Catholic country. Saint Patrick lived in Ireland more than 2,000 years ago. He is widely considered to have established Christianity in the country. The Church honored him with a holy day in the 17th century. March 17 marks the date of his death. The average Irish person honored March 17 quietly. Attending church services was the main activity. In fact, most businesses that served alcohol would close in honor of the day.
In the early 1900s, Ireland’s government made St. Patrick’s Day an official holiday. By the 1960s, towns across Ireland started celebrating the holiday with parades and music. In Ireland today, St. Patrick’s Day is a four-day public celebration that includes parades, music, food, and games.
For Irish people living outside Ireland, Saint Patrick’s Day became a chance to celebrate their Irish identity and culture. Now, countries and cities around the world celebrate March 17 in creative ways. Many countries hold Saint Patrick’s Day parades. Famous monuments, including the Great Wall of China, the Niagara Falls, and the Gateway of India in Mumbai will all be colored by green light for the day.
Cronin says that the worldwide popularity of Saint Patrick’s Day has helped the Irish

Kayla Coehoorn sweeps（打扫）the floor in her family’s cow barn(畜棚). She spreads feed. Soon she’ll cut the grass. One thing she won’t do is milk cows. Kayla manages the family’s cow herd, which until last year meant getting up at 5 for milking, then milking again in the evening. Not anymore. Last year the family built a new barn equipped with a pair of robotic milking machines. The machines milk cows around the clock, without Kayla in attendance. Kayla, feeling so relieved, loves it and so do the cows.
Robotic milking was first developed in Europe and only recently began to catch on in the US.
About 5% of American cow farms have begun to use robots. But the machines are growing in popularity, especially on smaller farms.
The robots solve a big problem. As older farmers retire, young people are unwilling to fill their shoes. Robotic milking is encouraging them to take another look. It not only makes the work easier but also gives them the flexibility（灵活性）to get up later or take a day off, or attend a soccer game. It allows more time for other things.
Cows come two or three times a day to a robot, attracted by the promise of food. As each one steps up, a steel arm swiftly washes its udder(乳房) and applies four milking cups. Computers not only control the robots but also collect detailed information about each cow. On traditional farms, the farmer pushes the old milking machines and attaches the machines by hand.
However, robots won’t save all farms. Low milk prices have got many cow farmers deep in debt and worsened the financial(财政的) uncertainty that also helps drive them out of business. Over the past few years, the US has lost nearly 17,000 cow farms. So robots aren’t a panacea(万能药). Still, experts say robotics can offer new possibilities to families facing hard decisions about the future. “Especially in places with a history of smaller farms, this will help keep that way of life,” says one expert.

Such a person is not even able to earn to feed himself for one time in a day, and you handed him everything we purchased for our big party. I am sure instead of delivering at our home, he must have disappeared with everything.
