World Water Shortage

A new study warns that about thirty percent of the world's people may not have enough water by the year 2025.

A private American organization called Population Action International did the new study. It says more than three-hundred-thirty-five-million people lack enough water now. The people live in twenty-eight countries. Most of the countries are in Africa or the Middle East.

P-A-I researcher Robert Engelman says by the year 2025, about three-thousand-million people may lack water. At least 18 more countries are expected to have severe water problems. The demand for water keeps increasing. Yet the amount of water on Earth stays the same.

Mr. Engelman says the population in countries that lack water is growing faster than in other parts of the world. He says population growth in these countries will continue to increase.

The report says lack of water in the future may result in several problems. It may increase health problems. Lack of water often means drinking waters not safe. Mr. Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of diseases, such as cholera, which are carried in water. Lack of water may also result in more international conflict. Countries may have to compete for water in the future. Some countries now get sixty percent of their fresh water from other countries. This is true of Egypt, the Netherlands, Cambodia, Syria, Sudan, and Iraq. And the report says lack of water would affect the ability of developing to improve their economies. This is because new industries often need a large amount of water when they are beginning.

The Population Action International study gives several solutions to the water problem. One way, it says, is to find ways to use water for more than one purpose. Another way is to teach people to be careful not

to waste water. A third way is to use less water of agriculture.

The report also says long-term solutions to the water problem must include controls on population growth. It says countries cannot provide clean water unless they slow population growth by limiting the number of children people have.

Global warming a bigger threat to poor

Global warming, modelled on computer here, kills more people than terrorism

Global warming threatens to reverse human progress, and make unachievable all UN targets to reduce poverty(联合国所有减少贫穷的目标), according to some of the world's leading international and development groups.

In a report published today, Oxfam, Greenpeace, Christian Aid, Friends of the Earth, WWF(英国牛津救济委员会、“绿色和平”组织、基督徒互援会、“地球之友”组织、世界野生动物基金组织) and 15 other groups say rich governments must immediately address(致力于) climate change to avoid even "obscene levels(无法忍受的程度)" of worldwide poverty.

"Food production, water supplies, public health and people's livelihoods are already being damaged and undermined," the report says. "There is no either/or approach possible(想找一个… The world must meet its commitments to achieve poverty reduction and also tackle climate change. The two are inextricably linked(二者的联系是难解难分的)."

The report, which draws on UN predictions of the effects of climate change in poor countries over the next 50 years, says poor countries will experience more flooding, declining food production, more disease and the deterioration or extinction of entire ecosystems(整个生态系统的退化甚至消失) on which many of the world's poorest people depend.

"Climate change needs to be addressed now. The poor will bear the brunt of the impacts. The frontline experience of many of us working in international development indicates that communities are having to combat more extreme weather conditions."

Climate change will play havoc(大范围的破坏;浩劫)with agriculture and water supplies and will increase diseases. "By 2025 the proportion of the world's population living in countries of significant

water stress will almost double, to 6 billion people. Tropical and sub-tropical areas will be hardest hit - those countries already suffering from food insecurity(食品短缺)".

Poor communities mostly do not need hi-tech solutions, but would most benefit from education, research and being shown how to farm better. The report says unchecked global warming(尚未得到抑制的全球变暖), more than wars or political upheaval(政变), will displace millions of people and destabilise many countries.

The environmental protection is the most major problem which in the modern life the humanity faces. Must solve this problem must start from foundation. First, must massively propagandize, enhances people's consciousness with understanding, strengthens the environmental protection consciousness. Everyone knows how the work week can take a toll on employees, but new research suggests the

five-day slog may have even broader impacts - on climate. After examining more than 40 years of temperature data taken from roughly 10,000 surface stations,

researchers from the National Oceanic and

Atmospheric Administration and from the University of Reading in the U.K. found that temperature

differences between day and night appear to follow distinct five-days-on, two-days-off patterns.

The scientists checked the data for all possible natural influences such as the lunar cycle as well as random variations and found neither to be at play. The only factor that could be causing the fluctuations was the Monday-through-Friday grind, they concluded in a recently published report in the

data to be different," said Piers M de F. Forster, a meteorologist based at the University of Reading, England, who co-authored the study with NOAA's

Susan Solomon. "So whatever the cause we find has to be something that we're changing, ourselves."

The meteorologists propose the differences in

average temperatures between Saturdays as opposed to Thursdays, for example, may stem from

workweek-induced pollution. Forster explains that during the workweek more people commute and

more factories are in operation. Both contribute to the amount of particle pollution in the air. Particles can influence cloud cover, but the kind of particles released into the atmosphere can lead to different changes, says Forster. Lighter particles provide a surface for cloud droplets

to form. This leads to an increase in cloud cover,

which, in turn, can lead to an increase in temperature since clouds have an insulating effect.

The world's oceans are slowly getting more acidic, say scientists. The researchers from California say the change is taking place in response to higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

The lowering of the waters' pH value is not great at the moment but could pose a serious threat to

current marine life if it continues, they warn.

Ken Caldeira and Michael Wickett, from the

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, report their concerns in the journal Nature. Increasing use of fossil fuels means more carbon dioxide is going into the air, and most of it will

eventually be absorbed by seawater. Once in the water, it reacts to form carbonic acid.

Scientists believe that the oceans have already become slightly more acidic over the last century. But these researchers have tried to predict what will happen in the future by combining what we know about the history of the oceans with

computer models of climate change. "This level of acidity will get much more extreme in the future if we continue releasing CO2 into the

atmosphere," said Dr Caldeira. "And we predicted amounts of future acidity that exceed anything we saw over the last several

hundred million years, apart from perhaps after

rare catastrophic events such as asteroid

impacts."

If carbon dioxide release continues unabated,

ocean pH could be reduced by as much as 0.77

units, the authors warn.

It is not absolutely clear what that means for

marine life, however.

Most organisms live near the surface, where the

greatest pH change would be expected to occur, but deep-ocean lifeforms may be more sensitive to

pH changes.

Coral reefs and other organisms whose skeletons or shells contain calcium carbonate may be

particularly affected, the team speculate. They

could find it much more difficult to build these

structures in water with a lower pH.

In recent years some people have suggested

deliberately storing carbon dioxide from power

stations in the deep ocean as a way of curbing

global warming. But Dr Caldeira said that such a strategy should now be re-considered.

"Previously, most experts had looked at ocean

absorption of carbon dioxide as a good thing -

because in releasing CO2 into the atmosphere we warm the planet; and when CO2 is absorbed by the ocean, it reduces the amount of greenhouse warming.

Ever wonder how much a cloud weighs? What about a hurricane? A meteorologist has done some estimates and the results might surprise you. Let's start with a very simple white puffy cloud - a cumulus cloud. How much does the water in a

cumulus cloud weigh? Peggy LeMone, senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, did the numbers. "The water in the little cloud weighs about 550

tons," she calculates. "Or if you want to convert it to something that might be a little more

meaningful … think of elephants."

Assume an elephant weighs about six tons, she

says, that would mean that water inside a typical cumulous cloud would weigh about one hundred elephants.

The thought of a hundred elephants-worth of water suspended in the sky begs another question - what keeps it up there?

"First of all, the water isn't in elephant sized

particles, it's in tiny tiny tiny particles," explains

LeMone. And those particles float on the warmer air that's rising below. But still, the concept of so much

water floating in the sky was surprising even to a meteorologist like LeMone.

"I had no idea how much a cloud would weigh,

actually, when I started the calculations," she

says. So how many elephant units of water are inside a

big storm cloud … 10 times bigger all the way

around than the "puffy" cumulus cloud? Again,

LeMone did the numbers: About 200,000

elephants. Now, ratchet up the calculations for a hurricane about the size of Missouri and the figures get

really massive. "What we're doing is weighing the water in one cubic meter theoretically pulled from a cloud and then multiplying by the number of meters in a

whole hurricane," she explains.

The result? Forty million elephants. That means

the water in one hurricane weighs more than all

the elephants on the planet. Perhaps even more

than all the elephants that have ever lived on the

planet.

Dr Fraser said that after the ban was adopted, the atmospheric level of chlorine continued to rise, peaking in 2000. By slashing the sunlight that reaches the ground by 10 to 15 percent, the choking smog has also altered the region's

climate, cooling the ground while heating

the atmosphere, scientists said.

The potent haze lying over the entire Indian subcontinent -- from Sri Lanka to Afghanistan -- has led to some erratic

weather, sparking flooding in Bangladesh, Nepal and northeastern India, but drought in Pakistan and northwestern India. "There are also global implications, not

Johannesburg, which opens on August 26, where all eyes will be on how not to

overburden the planet.

Global threat

While haze hovers over other parts of the world, including America and Europe, what surprised scientists was just how far the cloud extended, and how much black carbon was in it, according to India's National Physical Laboratory.

A cocktail of aerosols, ash, soot and other particles, the haze's reach extends far beyond the study zone of the Indian subcontinent, and towards East and Southeast Asia.

While many scientists once thought that

only lighter greenhouse gases, such as

carbon dioxide, could travel across the

Earth, they now say that aerosol clouds

can too.

"Biomass burning" from forest fires, vegetation clearing and fossil fuel was just as much to blame for the shrouding haze as dirty industries from Asia's great cities, the study found.

A large part of the aerosol cloud comes

from inefficient cookers, where fuels such as cow dung and kerosene are used to

cook food in many parts of Asia.

Acid rain

Using data from ships, planes and

satellites to study Asia's haze during the northern winter months of 1995 to 2000, scientists discovered not only that the

smog cut sunlight, heating the

atmosphere, but also that it created acid rain, a serious threat to crops and trees, as well as contaminating oceans and

hurting agriculture. The report suggested the pollution could be cutting India's winter rice harvest by as much as 10 percent. The report calculated that the cloud could cut rainfall over northwest Pakistan,

Afghanistan, western China and western central Asia by up to 40 percent.

While scientists say they still need more scientific data, they suggest the regional and global impact of the haze will intensify over the next 30 years.

In the next phase of the project, scientists will collect data from the entire Asian

region, over more seasons with more

observation sites and refine their

techniques.

But because the lifetime of pollutants is

short and they can be rained out,

In a report published today, Oxfam,

Greenpeace, Christian Aid, Friends of the

Climate change will play havoc(大范围的破坏;浩劫)with agriculture and water supplies and will increase diseases. "By 2025 the proportion of the world's population living in countries of significant water stress will almost double, to 6 billion people.

Mount St. Helens shoots out more steam

Mount St. Helens vented a new column of steam October 10, a lazy plume(烟

柱) that rose out of the crater of the snow-dusted volcano.

The billow of steam(翻滚的蒸汽) rose from an area where a large upwelling or bulge of rock has been growing on the dome-shaped formation of rock in the crater(火山口的圆顶状岩石). The plume rose several hundred feet above the 8,364-foot volcano, and light wind slowly blew it toward the south and southeast.

The venting reminded scientists of the volcano's activity 20 years ago, when it built the dome following its catastrophic 1980 eruption.

"It's a view very, very reminiscent(令人回想的) of the years in the 1980s during dome-building and a few years after when the system(整座火山) was hot and water was being heated and vapor was rising and steam clouds were forming," said Willie Scott, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

The plume appeared to be mostly steam, and scientists said any volcanic ash that was included was probably from past eruptions during the 1980s.

Scott described the emission as a "very lazy conductive rise(缓缓升起) of this warm, moist air," unlike previous weeks' bursts characterized by more vigorous jetting that threw up ash, large pieces of rock and glacier ice(冰川的冰块).

The steam emission followed an increase in earthquake activity over the previous two days, with quakes of magnitude 2.4(里氏2.4级) occurring every two minutes until Sunday, when the vibrations were more frequent but weakened to magnitude 1 or less.

"What has been peculiar about these earthquakes is that there seems to be a disproportionate number of them that are uniform in size(这些地震的特别之处在于它们在规模上一致,数量上却不成比例)," said seismologist Tony Qamar at the University of Washington's seismic lab in Seattle.

It indicates that pressure in the system is very uniform, which may suggest magma is constantly moving upward, he said. "The pressure will build up, the rock will break, and then you'll get an earthquake," Qamar said.

Geologists do not anticipate anything similar to the May 18, 1980, blast that killed 57 people, blew 1,300 feet off the top of the peak.

Williams started out measuring the air in a soccer stadium. He wanted to see if the fans’ exhaled(呼出的) breaths might affect levels of greenhouse gases in the air.Carbon dioxide, which people breathe out,is one example. And he found the answer was no at least on a small scale. But he noticed levels of carbon dioxide shifted wildly whenever the crowd cheered. That got him wondering:Could the gases people exhale be influenced by emotions? So Williams went to the movies. He and his coworkers measured air samples collected over six weeks in two movie theaters.Overall,9,500 moviegoers watched 16 films including a mix of comedy, romance, action and horror films. Then they looked for hundreds of chemicals in the air that showed up as people were watching particular

高中英语阅读理解科技类一 Excused from recycling(回收利用) because you live in a high rise with a rubbish chute(垃圾道)? You won't be for long. Miami's Mark Shantzis has made it simple for those living in tall buildings to use the chute and recycle too . In Shantzis' Hi-Rise Recycling System, a chute leads to a pie-shaped container with six boxes that can turn around when operated. The system, which fits in the same space as the chute and container now in use, enables glass, plastic, paper, metal, and other rubbish to go into separate boxes. The system is controlled from a board next to the chute door. The board has a button for each class of recycling materials (as well as for unrecyclables). At the press of a button, a microcomputer locks all other floors' chute door and sets the recycling container turning until the right box comes under the chute. The computer also counts the loads and gives a signal by phone when the box is full. And a particular piece of equipment breaks up the nonrecyclables Sorting(分类) recyclables before they are collected saves the use of expensive materials recovery equipment which otherwise has to do the sorting. Such equipment often makes recycled materials very expensive, so expensive that tons of recyclables remain wasted. Shantzis believes his system could help recycled materials become more cost-effective. 1.The purpose in writing this text is _________. A.to encourage people to recycle their rubbish B.to introduce a recycling system for high rises C.to describe the use of computer technology in recycling D.to explain the need for rubbish collection in high rises 2.When he says "You won't be for long" the writer means that _______. A.you'll soon be living in a cleaner building B.rubbish chutes will become out of date before long C.you won't wait long for your turn to recycle rubbish D.it won't be long before you'll have to recycle your rubbish 3.Before dropping rubbish into the chute you have to ___________ A.lock the other floors' chute doors B.check if the container is full C.press the correct button D.break up the rubbish 4..The biggest advantage of this new system is that _________ A.it reduces the cost of recycling B.it saves time and space C.it saves money for people living in high rises D.it makes better use of the existing recovery equipment B According to the US government, wind farms off the Pacific coast could produce 900 gig watts of electricity every year. Unfortunately, the water there is far too deep for even the tallest windmills (see picture) to touch bottom. An experiment under way off the coast of Norway, however, could help put them anywhere. 1.How common are other civilizations in the universe? This question has fascinated humanity for centuries, and although we still have no definitive answer, a number of recent developments have brought it once again to the fore. Chief among these is the confirmation, after a long time wait and several false starts, that planet exist outside our solar system. 2.By the time the debris settled and the collective misery was tallied, the devastation had in some respects exceeded even that of El Nino of 1982-1983, which killed 2,000 worldwide and caused about 13 billion dollars in damage. 3.The sun had set 12 minutes earlier, and twilight was waning on the northern coast of Papua New Guinea. It was July 17, 1998, and another tranquil Friday evening was drawing to a close for the men, women and children of Sissano, Arop, Warapu and other small villages on the peaceful sand spit between Sissano Lagoon and the Bismarck Sea. 4.To the extent that planets are necessary for origin and evolution of life, these excitingdiscoveries certainly argue well for the widely held view that life pervades the universe. 5.There is no specific technology, no silver bullet to extend the oil supplies. But there are sure an awful lot of copper bullets lying around. 6.Many people have argued that once primitive life has evolved, natural selection will inevitably cause it to advance toward intelligence and technology. But is this necessarily so? That might be something wrong with this argument was famously articulated by nuclear physicist Enrico Fermi in 1950. If extraterrestrials are commonplace, he asked, where are they? Should their presence not be obvious? This question has become known as Fermi Paradox. 7.Even though the link between birds and dinosaurs is family established, the definition of birds has become a difficult problem. IBM Developing chips for TV set-top boxes Computer giant IBM said Friday it is developing chips for televison set-top boxes that will transform TV sets into interactive, two-way information appliances. Lampbrella You can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. ①But designer Mikhail Belvacv doesn’t t hink that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That’s why he created lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella. The designer says he ②come up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street ad saw the street lamps ③lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy built into a street lamp.” he said. The lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella ④on demand. Sensors then ensure that the umbrella offers p edestrians shelter whenever it starts raining. ⑤In addition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone’s using the lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed. According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lighting strike. Each lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians. While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyacv says he recently introduced his creation one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be installed on my street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.
