TEACHING DESIGN

Special new experimentIt's cutting-edge and controversial. But there is a new proof that the cloning of the endangered species just might work.A rare Asian calf born on an Iowa farm is possiblly the first healthy animal cloned from the endangered species. Our Peter Standring has the story. In the heart of the midwest where dairy farms and cattle dominate the landscape, and an exotic breed cow has got everyone talking. It is a rare Asian calf known as a banteng(班腾野牛), born recently in this Iowa research farm."The calf is nursing at regular intervals, he is bright, alert. By all accounts, he can get up and down by himself and we are very hopeful that he will go on to live a normal life."The story of this unique animal begins in California, at the San Diego wild animal park banteng breeding program. In 1980, an adult male died without producing any offspring, so researchers at the zoo froze some of banteng's skin cells, hoping one day to put them to good use. They were into the "Frozen Zoo". It's a deep freeze menagerie(动物园) of some of the rarest animals on earth.3200 in all. Their genetic information is preserved in 4 tanks, kept at -320℉"We used to have a poster on the wall in here, it was said that you must collect things for reasons that you do not yet understand. So we collect as many samples as possible, whenever we can, and we put them in here. They potentially will stay there for many, many, many generations, 2 or 3 hundred years."Last year, the banteng's skin cells were removed from the "Frozen Zoo" and sent to the Advanced Cell Technology Lab in Western Massachusetts. The banteng's DNA was transferred into the eggs of ordinary beef cows; the fertilized eggs were then implanted into several surrogate〔代孕〕mothers. While Scientists believe that this type of cross-species cloning holds great promise, but it is not as simple as it seems. Two years ago, Advanced Cell cloned a rare Asian ox known as a gaur〔亚洲野牛〕. It was hailed as the first birth of cloned endangered animal. The gaur died less than two days after the birth. Despite that setback, scientists insisted that birth was a proof----cloning could work .Now, their determination and patience could pay off. The long-term survival of the baby banteng would bode〔预示〕 well for his and other endangered species whose numbers could hypothetically be boosted by this brave new experiment.。

典例引领 (2016山东烟台二模,D)The term “helicopter parents” refers to “a style of parents who are over focused on their children”.Helicopter parents are always making a big push to provide children with every opportunity to succeed, from baby steps at age 1, homework at age 8, college application at age 18, employment issues at age 25 to family problems at age 30, 40 or even older. They constantly shadow the child, always directing his behavior, allowing him zero alone time.Helicopter parenting can develop for a number of reasons. Worries about the economy, the job market, and the world in general can push parents toward taking more control over their child’s life in an attempt to protect them. Adults whofelt unloved or ignored as children can overcompensate their own children. When parents see other overinvolved parents, it can cause a similar response. They feel that if they don’t involve themselves in their children’s lives, they are bad parents. The main problem with helicopter parenting is that it can backfire. To give an example, the house where Mary lived with roommates was broken into and things were stolen. Mary called the landlord(房东)to install an alarm system, but before she could finish the negotiations(协商), her mother rushed in and demanded action. “I felt like my mother ruined my communication with our landlord. We could have gotten it done ourselves. She was well intended but only made me feel annoyed and defeated,”says Mary.Obviously, overparenting is motivated with the idea of doing good things but it does the exact opposite. In the long run parents are actually damaging theirchild’s basic skills to deal with matters independently. It makes the child feel lacking in confidence, less competent in dealing with the stresses of life on their own. They’re winning the battle, but actually losing th e war.1.What’s the purpose of helicopter parents’ overparenting?A.To do something good for their children.B.To make their children not ignored.C.To help their children find a good job.D.To get rid of the pressure from other parents.2.What can we learn from the passage?A.Children who have helicopter parents live a hard life.B.Helicopter parenting only happens to very young children.C.Helicopter parents can protect their children against all problems.D.Helicopter parents do their children great harm in the long run.3.What will possibly be discussed in the paragraph that follows?A.The bad effects of helicopter parenting.B.How we can avoid being helicopter parents.C.Different opinions about helicopter parenting.D.The reasons for the development of helicopter parents.4.What is the author’s attitude towards “helicopter parenting”?A.Uninterested.B.Objective.C.Positive.D.Disapproving.

The main topic people a re often talking about at present is personal cars.
Everything that has weight and occupies space is called matter. Everything is called matter that has weight and occupies space.
There is an expression in his eyes that I cannot understand.
God bless this ship and all that sail in her.

阅读理解A(2020·长春质量监测一)Pangolins(穿山甲) arestrangelooking creatures, covered with hard scales(鳞).They can roll up into a ball to protect themselves from enemies and have tongues that are longer than their bodies.Pangolins have recently become the focus of Chinese people. A screenshot of a microblog post showing some people eating pangolins at a feast spread. A few days later, people were angered again by pictures showing people eating protected animals, including pangolins.Yet this is only the tip of the iceberg. Many more pangolins have been hunted or killed. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN), more than 1 million of them have been killed or sold in the last 10 years. It also said that they are the most illegally traded mammals in the world. In September 2016, the IUCN added the pangolin to the world’s “endanger ed animals list”. They are now more endangered than pandas.A growing trade of their scales and meat is the main reason for their decline in number. Many people in Asia and Africa consider pangolin meat is delicious. Some people even think pangolin scales have medical qualities. However, their scales are made of keratin(角蛋白), the same material human fingernails are made of.Luckily, the situation is getting better. World Pangolin Day is on the third Saturday of February each year. It’s a day to help people know more about pangolins. The government now stops anyone from buying and eating pangolins in China. Breaking this law is regarded as a crime, and the trade of pangolins across the world is also not allowed, according to the Convention on Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

Module 6Animals in Danger维A 阅读理解(2012·浙江,A)Easter(复活节) is still a great day for worship, candy in baskets and running around the yard finding eggs, but every year it gets quite a bit worse for bunnies. And no,not because the kids like to pull their ears. The culprit is climate change, and some researchers found that rising temperatures are having harmful effects on at least five species of rabbit in the US.Take the Lower Keys Marsh rabbit, for instance. An endangered species that lives in the Lower Florida Keys, this species of cottontail is a great swimmer—it lives on the islands!—but it is already severely affected by development and now by rising sea levels. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, an ocean level rise of only 0.6 meters will send these guys jumping to higher ground and a 0. 9meter rise would wipe out their habitat(栖息地)completely. The snowshoe hare,on the other hand, has a color issue. Most of these rabbits change their fur color from white in the wintertime to brown in the summer, each designed to give them better cover from predators(捕食者).As the number of days with snow decreases all across the country, however, more and more bunnies are being left in white fur during brown dirt days of both fall and spring, making them an easier mark for predators.Researchers know that the color change is controlled by the number of hours of sunlight, but whether the rabbit will be able to adapt quick enough to survive is a big question. The National Wildlife Federation has reported that hunters have noticed their numbers are already markedly down.American pikas or rock rabbits, a relative of rabbits and hares, might be the first of these species to go extinct due to climate change. About 78 inches long, pikas live high in the cool, damp mountains west of the Rocky Mountains. As global temperatures rise, they would naturally migrate(迁移)to higher groundbut they already occupy the mountaintops. They can't go any higher. The National WildlifeFederation reports that they might not be able to stand the new temperatures as their habitat heats up.The volcano rabbit has the same problem. These rabbits live on the slopes of volcanoes in Mexico, and recent studies have shown that the lower range of their habitat has already shifted upward about 700 meters, but there are not suitable plants for them to move higher, so they are stuck in the middle.Scientists are concerned about their populations.Native to the US, pygmy rabbits weigh less than 1 pound and live in the American West. They are believed to be the smallest rabbits in the world. Their habitats have been destroyed by development.Several populations, such as the Columbia Basin pygmy, almost went extinct and were saved by zoo breeding programs.Pygmy rabbits also rely on winter cover by digging tunnels through the snow to escape predators, but lesser snowfall is leaving them exposed. All of this gives new meaning to dressing up in a giant bunny costume this Easter. 1.The writer mentions Easter at the beginning of the passage in order to________.A.show the importance of Easter DayB.introduce the issue about bunniesC.remind people of Easter traditionsD.discuss the relationship between Easter and bunnies2.The word “culprit” (Paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to________.A.criminal B.judgeC.victim D.producer3.According to the passage, some rabbits can now be easily discovered by predators because they________.A.are exposed to more skillful huntersB.have moved to habitats with fewer plantsC.haven't adapted themselves to climate changeD.can't change their fur color into white in the fall and the spring4.The problem faced by volcano rabbits and rock rabbits is that________.A.both are affected by less snowB.both are affected by rising sea levelsC.neither can find enough foodD.neither can migrate to higher places5.Which best describes the writer's tone in the passage?A.Approving. B.Concerned.C.Enthusiastic.
介绍rock rabbits时说:they already occupy the mountaintops/They can't go any higher,另外说:The volcano rabbit has the same problem.
