Discuss the following questions before starting writing the advice letter.

2) Activities and Research:

Form groups and finish writing the letter to the father and the son. One from each group will read the letter in front of the class and decide which letter is the best. All of you are judges.

Dear Liu Wei,

Thanks for your attention to our magazine. After reading your letter, I know you are in trouble with your family. Don't worry. I'd like to tell you something about myself when I was at the same age as you. Before I was born, my parents had already arranged all the things for my life. They wanted me to study all the time. But what I liked most was to enjoy myself by reading novels, watching TV or chatting online with my friends in my spare time. So we often quarreled with each other. However, as time flies, I begin to understand my parents. I didn't think that what they did was to love Me. I began to live alone.

Nowadays you meet the same problems as I, which are still the common problems in the modern society. Here I want to give you some advice: First, you must honour your parents, not shout at them. Second, maybe you can often talk to your parents to let them understand you, to let them know what is in your mind. And try to spend your spare time with them. Third, you can do something you can to help them, such as cleaning the floor, washing clothes I'm sure your parents will be happy to see that. The last one is that you should do what your parents ask you to. For example, pay more attention to your study. It's time for you to study at all.

The advice may work a lot and I hope it's helpful to you. I wish you can bridge the generation gap between you and your parents. I am looking forward to receiving your good news.

considered what you have said is always right, or what you have planned is always acceptable for your son?

Here I want to give you some advice, I wish it could be helpful for you. First,

you should be not only strict but also kindly to him. You mustn't always shout at him.

Your son is not a child. He can have his own opinion. You should respect him and his advice. Maybe his advice is of value. Second, you may try to enjoy what he likes,

such as music and DVDs. You may always take more notice of what he thinks. On

one hand, you can understand him further, on the other hand you can bridge the gap between you. Third, you can turn to your son's teachers, o r close friends for help.

They can understand what your son thinks and needs.

In a word, as a father, you should not only try your best to understand what he

needs, but also respect him and his advice. I believe you can solve the problem satisfactorily, and everything will go well.

Writing an advice letter

Planning

Work in groups of four. First let’s discuss the four questions given in this part, especially the third and the fourth questions. Then decide which ways should be included in the letter you are going to

write. You should assign roles to each of you and write down what you should do.

Preparing

Those who are responsible for finding examples of advice letters can look at the resources such as magazines, newspapers, Internet sites or TV shows for teenagers to get as much information as

you can. Then you will discuss the information found and decide how to write the letter. You also

should discuss the draft made by those responsible for writing the outline and evaluate it.

Producing

Compose the letter based on the outline and proofread the draft. The writer writes the letter, and

has it approved by the whole group.

Presenting

Each group reads your letter to the whole class. You should also answer the questions the other

groups have about your letter. At last all the groups display your letters on the walls of the classroom.

Then let them skim for the general idea for each section, and scan for further understanding.
