As a boy growing up in India,I had longed to travel abroad.I used to listen to the stories my father would tell me about his stay in Canada and tours to Europe in the 1970s,with great interest.

My big moment finally came in the summer of 1998 when I was able to accompany my parents to Europe, where my father was to attend a meeting. We planned to travel to Belgium,Netherlands and West Germany.

I have vivid memories even today of going to Mumbai airport at night all excited about finally going abroad.I had heard several great things about Lufthansa till then but now I finally got to experience them first hand, during the flight to Frankfurt. We flew business class and even today I can remember the excellent service by the Lufthansa crew. The flight was really smooth and thoroughly enjoyable, even for someone like me,who is otherwise scared of flying.

After spending almost two weeks in Europe,we took the Lufthansa airport express from Dusseldorf to Frankfurt airport, for our return flight. What a journey that was! All along the Rhine (莱茵河),it was simply an unforgettable experience.I was in a sombre mood on the flight back to Mumbai as it marked the end of a wonderful vacation, but the Lufthansa crew members were able to change it into a most enjoyable experience yet again, with the quality of their service.

Being the first airline to take me overseas,Lufthansa will always hold a special place in my heart.Even today,I continue to enjoy flights on Lufthansa and simply cannot dream of choosing any other airline.Flying,in general, for me,has always been an ordeal (terrible and painful experience).Flying on Lufthansa, however,is something I always have and always will look forward to.

The Beatles were the most influential band in pop history. In their 8-year, 12-album history, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr altered (改变) popular culture dramatically. And

it wasn't just the suits and changing lengths of hair the four Liverpool boys wore that had such an impact, but what they seemed to stand for. The world saw them as the voice of a new generation, one with a very different attitude to life.

Their influence was at its height in the 1960s, but their music continues to stir listeners today. However, up until recently one aspect of the Beatles was struck in Yesterday: The music had never been remastered But on September 9 that situation came to an end, with the release of the entire band's music in a digital makeover. It is probably the biggest reissue (重新发行) in pop music history, said British newspaper the Financial Times.

The albums were remastered at Abbey Road Studios in London, the location where the band produced much of their work. The cover of their last album, Abbey Road of1969, featured the four young men striding (大步行走) across a zebra crossing on Abbey Road itself. It is one of the most famous of all Beatles images.

Recently, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the album, hundreds of Beatles lovers gathered there to show their appreciation.

Pop groups come and go. The boy band pursued by screaming fans one year will be forgotten the next. But the Beatles are one of the few groups whose music seems to have endured (持久). Why? Paul McCartney's biographer Barry Miles has an explanation: “They were the first rock band… and they just happened to be the best. They were the first band to play stadiums, to have their own products. They were ground-breaking in every way,” he says.

40.Why did the Beatles change popular culture?

A.Because of the suits of the four Liverpool boys.

B.Because of changing lengths of hair the four Liverpool boys wore.

C.Because of their albums.

D.Because of their different attitude to life.

41.Which of the following statements is FALSE according to the second paragraph?

A.The Beatles influenced people at its height in the 1960s.

B.Their music Yesterday had never been remastered.

C.The entire band's music in a digital makeover will be remastered.

D.On September 9, their music came to an end.

42.What is their last album?

A.Yesterday. B.Abbey Road of 1969.

C.Come Together. D.In My life.

43.What is NOT the reason why their music can endure?

A.They were the first rock band.

B.They were the best one.

C.They were the first band to play stadiums and to have their own works.

D.They wore special suits.

C

I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal (谷类食物), eggs or toast. While others had Cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from other kids' too. But_at_least_I_wasn't_alone_in_my_sufferings. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.

My mother insisted upon knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and where we were going. She insisted if we said we'd be gone an hour, then we be gone one hour or less—not one hour and one minute. And she always insisted upon us telling the truth. Now you can see how mean she was.

The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by nine each night and up at eight the next morning. We had to wash dishes, make beds, and learn to cook. We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath, while the other kids always wore their clothes for days. I believe she laid awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.

Through the years, things didn't improve a bit. We could not lie in bed, “sick” like our friends did, and miss school. Our marks in school had to be up to par(达到正常水平). Our friends' report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, being as different as she was, would settle for nothing less than ugly black marks.

As the years rolled by, we were one by one put to shame. We were graduated from high school. With our mother behind us, talking, hitting and demanding respect, none of us was allowed the pleasure of being a drop-out.

My mother was a complete failure as a mother. Out of four children, a couple of us attained some higher education. And whom do we have to blame for the terrible way we turned out? You're right, our mean mother. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults.

Now I am trying to raise my three children. I am filled with pride when my children call me mean. Because, you see, I had the meanest mother in the world.

44.What does the sentence “But at least I wasn't alone in my sufferings.” mean?

A.The author's mother was only mean to her.

B.The author's mother suffered her.

C.The author's mother was mean to her sister, brothers and her.

D.The author wasn't alone because of suffering.

45.According to the passage, the author's mother will ask her children to do all the following EXCEPT ________.

A.learn to cook

B.wear clean clothes

C.go to bed and get up at fixed time

D.drink as much Cokes as they want

46.Why was the author's mother mean to her children?

A.Because she wanted her children to be top students in school.

B.Because she wanted her children to bring home colored report cards like her friends did.

C.Because she wanted her children to drop out.

D.Because she wanted her children to do their best at school and be educated and respected citizens.

D

You love Jay Chou's songs and you can sing some quite well. So you make a video of your performance and post it online for your friends to see. But what if this led to something beyond your wildest imagination—a career in music?

Canadian teenager Justin Bieber, 16, has just had the magical experience: He posted homemade videos of his versions of songs by American singer Chris Brown online for his relatives. He received a phone call from Brown, telling him how much he liked his performance. His singing eventually earned him a fan base and a record contract. After releasing a popular EP (extended play密纹唱片) record in November 2009, his album My w orld 2.0 came out last Tuesday.

Bieber sings ballads and songs about puppy love. But is he just another gooey (甜腻的) teen idol? David Malitz, a columnist with the Washington Post, doesn't think so. “If we truly want the best for American children, let us pause and give thanks for Justin Bieber,” he writes. “After years of humdrum bubblegum (乏味的摇滚舞曲) from Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers, the 16-year-old has thrown a candy-coated wrench (扭转) into Disney's heartthrob (甜心) assembly line (生产线) by giving young fans something worth screaming their lungs out for: lovable pop songs.”

From a boy who grew up below the poverty line with his divorced mom to a star who caused near-riots (近乎失控) in shopping malls, even Bieber himself can't believe his overnight fame, although his kind of success is becoming more and more common in the Internet era.

Interested in hockey (冰球), the national sport of Canada, the boy once put up pictures of players on the walls of his bedroom. He dreamed of being a hockey star and used to practice signing his autograph (签名). He doesn't need practice now. He signs autographs, if the girls can get close enough, as a music star.

47.What did Chris Brown think of Justin Bieber's singing?

A.He didn't like it.

B.He liked it very much.

C.He didn't say anything.

D.He supported Justin Bieber.

48.Who is a columnist?

A.Chris Brown. B.Jay Chou.

C.David Malitz. D.Miley Cyrus.

49.What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?

A.He had a happy family.

B.His family was very poor once.

C.His family was rich.

D.His family helped him a lot.

50.What's Justin Bieber's hobby?

A.Singing. B.Hockey.

C.Signing. D.Making records.

What do you, the trees, and a bird have in common? __51__ All living things must have water to survive, whether they get it from a water fountain, a rain cloud, or a little bottle attached to the side of a bird cage.

__52__Water makes up more than half of your body weight and a person can't survive for more than a few days without it. Why? Your body has lots of important jobs and it needs water to do many of them. For instance, your blood, which contains a lot of water, carries oxygen to all the cells of your body. Without oxygen, those tiny cells would die and your body would stop working.

Water is also in lymph, a fluid(流体) that is part of your immune system(免疫系统), which helps you fight off illness.__53__Water is needed for digestive juices, urine, and poop. And you can bet that water makes up most of sweat.

In addition to being an important part of the fluids in your body, each cell depends on water to function normally.

__54__Any fluid you drink will contain water, but water and milk are the best choices. Lots of foods contain water, too. __55__You could probably tell that if you've ever bitten into a peach or pear and felt the juices dripping down your chin! Vegetables, too, contain a lot of water — think of biting into a fat tomato from the garden.

A.You need water to digest your food and get rid of waste, too.

B.You all need water.

C.Without water, your body would stop working properly.

D.How much is enough?

E.Your body doesn't get water only from drinking water.

F.When you drink is also important.

G.Fruit contains quite a bit of water.

1.A belief后有从句进行修饰,是特指;a sense of humor是惯用法,指幽默感。

根据后面的resulted in the failure可知,她没有专心于工作,而keep one’s mind on意为“专心于”,所以答案为D。

pay off“有好结果,成功”,主语是物;make up 组成,编造,虚构,弥补;take on 呈现,承担;hold back 阻挡,抑制,控制。

第一空缺少动词,故用affect;第二空no后应用名词,故用effect,构成短语have no effect on…ks5u

11.A adopt measures 采取措施。

now and then 表示“偶尔,时而”。by and by表示“逐渐的”;step by step表示“逐步的”;more or less表示“差不多,几乎或大约”。

fix one's attention on/upon…留意,专心于(其中介词为on/upon);draw/call one's attention to引起某人对……

only if“只有当……(的时候)”;if only“但愿,要是……多好”;even if“即使”;if ever“如果有过的话(如果发生过的话)”。

从that it will embarrass their classmates if they… be good at“在……

22.D判断if they help… 从语境知,这里的they指代的是the students who are good at pronunciation,因此,“他们”应该是“指出”同学们的错误,故用point out(指出)。find out找出,查明;work out算出,解决;try out试验。

different from与……不同;quite different from与……

28.C if this is the case

31.B not…until…

In order to achieve this goal得到暗示。 aim for瞄准,以…… stand for代表;look for寻找;account for解释……

34.C There's no doubt that… no way决不;no need没有必要;no wonder难怪。

spend…on…“在……

produced much waste. As the a result, the lake was serious seriously polluted. To the west was a sandy field,

tha t which was the source of dust.Better Worse still, a brickyard on the southwest side of the lake used up a great deal ∧o f good soil. Now the poor house houses have been replaced by green trees and the brickyard by tall

buildings. The sandy field that the villagers used to ploughing plough has been covered with fruit trees. On the lake the villagers often spend his their spare time boating and fishing.

1.take place

3.as a result

7.短语a great deal 修饰名词时后面需要加of。

9.used to do sth

On the lake the villagers often spend his spare time boating and fishing.

One possible v ersion:

No Need for Panic Buying

Last year, a major earthquake hit Japan, which not only led to the explosion in a nuclear power plant, but also a wave of buying salt in China.

Why did people rush to buy salt? One reason is that many people believed rumors that iodized salt could prevent the hurt of radiation. As a result, they rushed to buy salt.Other people worried about an increase of price so they followed. Another reason is the lack of common sense among the public. As we know, it is not helpful enough to guard against radiation even by taking larger amounts of salt than usual.

So in my opinion, panic buying of salt is absolutely unnecessary.

Even if you don’t know the more complex aspects of index funds, everyone generally knows what it means to be good with money. Spend less than your earn, save for the future, stay out of debt. 36 In fact, when we are talking about money management, we are actually talking about our psychological relationship with money. Fundamentally, our financial problems come from unmet needs. In the case of compulsive overspending, the problem is almost never that a person lacks self-control. 37 If you overspend on clothing, you don’t actually believe you need 1,000 items in your closet. More likely, you are uncomfortable with your body or status. Clothing helped you feel good about yourself in the past. 38 If overspending on restaurants, you are not so lazy that you can’t be bothered to cook a single meal. Rather, you are exhausted from doing things you don’t want to do. You need to give yourself energy in the form of a food high, one that will temporarily mask your unhappiness. The path to true financial health is not to reduce your life to a tight budget, 39 Instead of letting yourself be controlled by uncomfortable impulses, financial health is all about creating a budget that allows you to do what you truly desire in life. If your problem is low self-worth, invest strategically in things that will make you feel worthy. Maybe it’s a few amazing pieces of clothing that are tailored well and last long. Maybe it’s a few sessions of therapy. If your problem is burnout, invest in rest and relaxation. 40 When something shifts within you, something shifts around you. Not the other way around. A.Now, you think you are always one dress away from feeling at peace in your own skin. B.Consider reducing your working hours, or setting aside money for a personal trip. C.However, it’s easier to say than to do. D.but to turn to financial consultants for advice on how to manage your bank account. E.Rather, he usually has an unmet basic need which he is addressing through overspending. F.Money principles are simple; it’s human psychology that’s complex. G.but to take an honest look at your needs and meet them with long-term solutions.
