A study has showed that the brain makes decisions about 10 se conds before a person realizes it.Experts involved in the study said that looking at brain activity w hile making a decision, they could predict the choices the subjects would make, before they realized that they had made a decision. Lead researcher J ohn-Dylan Haynes, a neuroscientist (神经学家)at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain S ciences in Leipzig, said that the new findings called into questio ns for “consciousness”of decisions that people make, and might even challenge ideas as to how“free”people are to make a deci sion at a particular moment.“We think our decisions are conscious, but these data show tha t consciousness is just the tip of the iceberg,”Nature magazine quoted (引用) him as saying. Thinking the results“quite dramatic”, Frank T ong of Vanderbilt University in , , said that 10 seconds is“a lifetime”in terms of brain activity.During the study, the brains of 14 volunteers were imaged as th ey performed a decision-making task. The subjects had two buttons before them, each t o be operated by a different hand, which they could press when they felt the urge to. They were sim ultaneously (同时地)shown a stream of letters, which appeared on a screen at ha lf-second intervals (间隔). The volunteers had to remember which letter was showing when they decided to press their button.Upon analysis of the data, the researchers realized that the earl iest signal they could catch started seven seconds before the v olunteers reported having made their decision. Given the delay of a few seconds in the imaging, they reckoned (估计) that the brain activity could have begun about ten seconds b efore the conscious decision. The researchers showed that the signals were picked up from a region (区域)called the frontopolar cortex (脑额极皮层),which is located at the front of the brain, immediately behind the forehead. While writing about the observations made during the research i n his study report, Haynes said that the frontopolar cormight be the brain region where decisions are started. He also showed that the next step in the research would be to speed up the data analysis so as to enable his team to predict people’s c hoices as their brains would make them.1. The passage tells us that ______.A. we are aware of our whole process of decision-makingB. people don’t make decisions until they realize itC. experts have no way to tell what decision one will makeD. the decision-making process starts before it is made2. The underlined word “subjects”in Para. 2 probably refers to _ _____.A. the topic of the experts’ research paperB. the scientific subjects that the experts were studyingC. the things that experts don’t know clearlyD. the volunteers that the experts worked on for their research3. The underlined sentence“consciousness is just the tip of the i ceberg”in Para. 4 means that ______.A. our decision-making is consciousB. the data contains a lot of information besides consciousnessC. consciousness is the major part of the dataD. 10 seconds is“a lifetime”in terms of brain activity4. The final purpose of the research ______.A. is not stated clearly in the passageB. is not acknowledged by expertsC. is to show where decision-making startsD. is to analyze the data picked up5. Wetake delight in the existence of creatures and even whole societ ies beyond our everyday lives. This sense of wonder is universal. Look at the efforts that scient ists have made to find out whether life of some kind exists on Mars, and the popularity of fantasy literature or movies like The L ord of the Rings. This sense of wonder draws us to each other, to the world around us, and to the world of make-believe. But have we gone so far in creating worlds of fantasy t hat we are missing the pleasure of other worlds that already exi st all around us?Human beings, as biologists have suggested, possess an inbor n desire to connect with and understand other life forms, Howev er, people, especially in big cities, often lead rather isolated live s. In a study of British schoolchildren, it was found that children by age eight were much more familiar with characters from tele vision shows and video games than with common wildlife. With out modern technology, a small pond could be an amazing worl d filled with strange and beautiful plants, insects, birds, and ani mals. When we lack meaningful interaction with the world aroun d us, and sometimes even with our families and friends, we see k to understand and communicate with things that exist only in our imaginations or on a computer screen. The world of make—believe is not necessarily bad. But when the world of fantasy be comes the only outlet for our sense of wonder, then we are reall y missing something. We are missing a connection with the livin g world. Other wonderful worlds exist all around us. But even more interesting is that if we look closely enough, we can see that these worlds, in a broad sense, are really part of our own.47.The popularity of The Lord of the Rings proves _____.A. the close connection between man and the fantasy worldB. the wonderful achievements of fantasy literatureC. the fine taste of moviegoers around the worldD. the general existence of the sense of curiosity48.What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?A. People are far less familiar with the world of fantasy.B. The world around us could serve as a sound of wonder.C. The world of fantasy can be mirrored by a small and lively pond.D. Modern technology prevents us from developing our sense of wonder.49.If our sense of wonder relies totally on the world of make—believe, we will _____.A. fail to appreciate the joy in our livesB. be confused by the world of make—believeC. miss the chance to recognize the fantasy worldD. be trapped by other worlds existing all around us50.What is the main purpose of the passage?A. To show us the hidden beauty in our world.B. To warn us not to get lost in the fantasy world.C. To argue against the misuse of the sense of wonder.D. To discuss the influence of the world of make—believe.47. D 48.B49.A50.B[【上海市闵行区2014高考英语质量调研考试】Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For e ach of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choo se the one that fits best according to the information given in th e passage you have just read.(A)Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long been accused of killing farm animals. Th ey are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of pursuing a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women r iding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it.People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict codes of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting re gularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy. It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fo x hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of pe ople opposed to fox hunting, because they think it is cruel, has r isen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without s ome kind of conflict between hunters and hunt saboteurs (阻拦者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly sab oteurs interfere (干涉) with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of t he fox’s smell, which the dogs follow.Noisy conflicts between hunters and saboteurs have become s o common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as th e pursuit of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. A Labour Party Member of the Parliament, Mike Foster, is trying to get Parliament to ap prove a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals wit h dogs illegal. If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in .66. I know it’s smaller than you wanted, but it’s one of the nicest flats in the building.W: Does it have three bedrooms?M: No. There are two. The master room is quite large though. Maybe you could let the children share the large room, and you and your husband could use the smaller one.W: I suppose I could do that. A three-bedroom flat will be difficult to find. I’ve been looking for one for over a week. The few three-bedroom flats that I have found are all extremely expensive. You said that the rent would be 350 dollars a month.M: Yes. It includes gas. So, as you can imagine, electricity and water are quite inexpensive.W: This sounds better and better. But before I sign an agreement I would like my husband to see it. M: Why not stop by with him this afternoon? Our office is open until seven o’clock.W: OK. See you then.(Text 8)W: Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me the way to the Red Bird Hotel?M: You can take the No. 8 bus. It’ll take you right there.W: Where is the stop?M: It is over there across the street in front of the post office.W: Do I have to have exact change?M: No, the driver can give you change.W: Where should I get off?M: Ask the driver to let you know. He knows the town very well.W: OK! Thanks. By the way, does the hotel have a sign by the street?M: Yes, a very big one, painted in red.W: Thank you. Bye!(Text 9)W: I enjoy going through secondhand bookstores, don’t you? It’s interesting to see what people used toenjoy reading. Did you see this old book of children’s stories?M: Some of these books aren’t so old, though. See? This history book was pu blished only six years ago. It costs seventy-five cents.W: Hey! Look at this!M: What? Are you getting interested in the 19th century poems all of a sudden?W: No. Look! Someone gave this book as a present and wrote a note on the inside of the front cover. It’s dated 1893. Maybe it’s worth fifty cents.M: Everything on that shelf is worth fifty cents.W: But if this is the note of someone who is well known, it might bring a lot more. I hear William Shakespeare’s note is worth about a million dollars.M: Good luck. Your book may make you rich. But I am sure my seventy-five cent history book is a better buy.(Text 10)M: When I was studying at Yale, something puzzled me greatly. I found that Chinese students or Asian students were very polite in class while American students often interrupted the professor, asking questions and having discussions. I was also impressed by the role of the professor in the class. The professor didn’t act as an authority figure, giving final conclusions, but as a researcher looking for answers to questions together with the students. When answering questions, he usually said, “This is my personal opinion and it could be wrong.” or “You could be right, but you might find this point of view also interesting.”Besides, in America, the examinations usually do not test a student’s ability to memorize the material. Actually, they test one’s ability to analyze and solve problems. People regard the education system in America as a process of improving critical thinking.。

AI like this job, in which I stay with small children and from which I get the challenges and awards. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career.I wasn’t an excellent student because I didn’t do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinkin g what I might do and found I didn’t have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn’t the type to have a career.I then found myself a job. Looking after two little girls, i t wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she’d give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didn’t often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children. One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me, I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification if I wanted to work with children. I didn’t think I would be accepted because I didn’t take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part – time course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten. Now I’ve got a full – time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. The main character in My Left Foot, based on the real story of cerebral palsy (大脑性麻痹) sufferer Christy Brown, can barely move his mouth to speak, but by controlling his left foot, he’s able to express himself as an artist and poet. For his moving performance of Brown, Daniel Lewis won his first Academy Award for best actor.Shine (1996)Do you have a talent you’re afraid to share with the world? David Helfgott seemed meant from childhood to be ―one of the truly great pianists,‖ but the pressures of performing (and pleasing his father) resulted in a complete breakdown. Ten years in a mental institution didn’t weaken Helfgott’s musical gift: When he was rediscovered, he was playing concertos in a bar. Shine received seven Oscar nominations (提名), and Geoffrey Rush won best actor for his performance of Helfgott.Life Is Beautiful (1997)Nothing’s more powerful than the love between a parent and a child. In this heartbreaking Italian film, a father (Roberto Benigni) makes an unbelievable sacrifice for his 4-year-old son: trapped in a Nazi concentration camp in 1945, the Jewish man convinces his boy that they are playing a complicated game. He manages to spare him the horror of the terrible war, and even in his final moments of life, keeps his son smiling and hopeful. Benigni won the best actor Oscar.Stand and Deliver (1988)Few people can inspire us more than a good teacher. Jaime Escalante (Edward James Olmos got Oscar nomination for best actor) is a great one. Employed at a high school where kids are expected to fail, Escalante challenges his math students to struggle for better things, like getting good grades in the AP exam. No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the world. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada. In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people: as we get older, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesight.Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people areborn with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on, the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people's attitude towards them.Disabled people face many physical barriers. Next time you go shopping or to work or visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers: prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through, so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability not their disability that count.28.The first paragraph points out that______.A. the number of disabled people in India is the greatestB. India has much more disabled people than CanadaC.there are many disabled people in the worldD. it is impossible to get an exact figure of the world's disabled people29.The last word of the passage "count" most probably means_____.A be numbered B. be includedC. be consideredD. be most important30.Which of the following statements is not true?A. About 10 percent of people in the UK are disabled.B. Even the able-bodied may lose some of their body functions when they get older.C. There still exists prejudice against the disabled which results mainly from ignoranceD. The whole society should pay due attention to the barriers faced by the disabled people31.It can be concluded from the passage that____.A. both physical and metal barriers are hard to break downB. we should take a proper attitude towards the disabledC. we should try our best to prevent disablementD. the able-bodies people will never fully understand the disabledDIf the earth's population is in growth at this rate , there will not be enough resources. By the middle of the 21st century, if present trends continue, we will have used up allthe oil that drives our cars, for example. Even if scientists develop new ways of feeding the human race, the crowded conditions on the earth will make it necessary for us to look for open space somewhere else. But none of the other planets in our solar system are capable of supporting life at present. One possible solution to the problem, however, has recently been suggested by American scientist, Professor Carl Sagan.Sagan believes that before the earth's resources are completely exhausted it will be possible to change the atmosphere of Venus and so create a new world almost as large as the earth itself. The difficult is that Venus is much hotter than the earth and there is only a tiny amount of water there.Sagan proposes that algae organisms(海藻有机体) that can live in extremely hot or cold atmospheres and at the same time produce oxygen, should be bred in condition similar to those on Venus. As soon as this has been done, the algae will be placed in small rockets. Spaceship will then fly to Venus and fire the rockets into the atmosphere .In a fairly short time, the algae will break down the carbon dioxide into oxygen and carbon. When the algae have done their work, the atmosphere will become cooler, but before man can set foot on Venus it will be necessary for the oxygen to produce rain. The surface of the planet will still be too hot for man to land on it but the rain will eventually fall and in a few years something like earth will be reproduced on Venus. 32.In the long run, the most difficult problem caused by population growth on the earth will probably be the lack of ______.A. oilB. foodC. resourcesD. space33.Carl Sagan believes that Venus might be a living place because _____A. the days on Venus are long enoughB. it might be possible to change its atmosphereC. there is a good supply of water on VenusD. its atmosphere is the same as the earth's34.Algae are plants that can____.A. live in very hot temperatureB. live in very cold temperatureC. produce oxygenD. all of the above35. II.阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)AI decided to go back to school in the fall of 2008 after not being happy with my current job and financial status. I obtained my Associate’s Degree in May 2002 in Commercial Arts. After graduation, I had trouble obtaining a job in that field. For years, I was going from one job to another feeling unfilled, and I was not satisfied with the instability. I decided to go back to school for either International Business or Psychology. I weighed the pros and cons of both professions and Psychology won. I like helping my friends and family, when they go through hard situations in their life by giving them sound advice and being honest with them. Also, I was interested in “the mind”. I was searching for online schools because my work schedule at my current job would not allow me to attend a regular class. I was nervous about starting online classes because I heard mixed stories from other friends who were taking online classes. I decided to do it anyway to experience something different. I wanted to find an online school that was affordable and reputable. Through my search, I discovered Walden University, which is specially for working adults who want to obtain a bachelor’s degree or higher. The process of getting accepted was easy, which included writing an essay on why I wanted to attend their school, transferring my previous credits, etc. I am currently enrolled in the Bachelors program for psychology, and I am paying for college via financial-aid loans and grants. This experience has been interesting yet trying as sometimes it was difficult to balance work, school and home life. I learned a lot about psychology and myself. For example, I like writing about current events, relationships and traveling. I thought my English composition was ordinary, but after taking a few classes at Walden University, I improved my English composition and it made me feel confident enough to start writing professionally so I became a freelance (自由撰稿) writer. Currently, I am only three classes away from obtaining my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology! It was one of the best decisions I made in my life.26. The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men’s hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age. The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women’s longevity may be linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age. “We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,” said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK. “Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,” said Goldspink. “This is part of the ageing process.” What surprises scientists is th at the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old woman’s heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one’s. “This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men,” said Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. “The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart,” said Goldspink. The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age.31. Well before classes start, students and teachers order Lattes, Cappuccinos and Hot Chocolates. Then, during the first period, teachers call in orders on their room phones, and students make deliveries. By closing time at 9.20 a.m., the shop usually sells 90 drinks. "Whoever made the chi tea, Ms. Schatzman says it was good," Christy McKinley, a second year student, announced recently, after hanging up with the teacher. The shop is called the Dixie PIT, which stands for Power in Transition. Although some of the students are not disabled, many are, and the PIT helps them prepare for life after high school. They learn not only how to run a coffee shop but also how to deal with their affairs. They keep a timecard and receive paychecks, which they keep in check registers. Special-education teachers Kim Chevalier and Sue Casey introduced the Dixie PIT from a similar program at Kennesaw Mountain High School in Georgia. Not that it was easy. Chevalier's first problem to overcome was product-related. Should schools be selling coffee? What about sugar content? Kenton County Food Service Director Ginger Gray helped. She made sure all the drinks, which use non-fat milk, fell within nutrition (营养) guidelines. The whole school has joined in to help. Teachers agreed to give up their lounge (休息室) in the mornings. Art students painted the name of the shop on the wall. Business students designed the paychecks. The basketball team helped pay for cups.36. What is the text mainly about?A. A best-selling coffee.B. A special educational program.C. Government support for schools.D. A new type of teacher-student relationship.37. A new study from Carnegie Mellon University shows anger may help people reduce the negative impacts of stress and help you become healthier."Here getting emotional is not bad for you if you look at the case of anger," said Jennifer Lerner of Carnegie Mellon. "The more people display anger, the lower their stress responses." Lerner studied 92 UCLA students by asking them to count back from 6,200. They must say out loud every thirteenth number. Researchers disturbed them by asking them to count faster or ask them other questions. If they made any mistakes, they had to restart from the very beginning. Many students felt depressed about making so many mistakes or got angry because the researchers were interrupting them. Lerner used a hidden video camera and recorded all their facial expressions during the test. The researchers describe their reactions as fear, anger and disgust. Other researchers recorded the students' blood pressure, pulse and production of a high-stress hormone (荷尔蒙) called cortisol. People whose faces showed more fear during the experiment had higher blood pressure and higher levels of the hormone. Both can have lasting effects such as diabetes (糖尿病), heart disease, depression and extra weight gain. When people feel fear, negative impacts increase, but when they get angry, those negatives go down, according to the study. "Having that sense of anger leads people to actually feel some power in what otherwise is maddening (令人发狂的) situation," Lerner said. Lerner previously studied Americans' emotional response to the 911 terrorist attacks two months after the incident. She found people who reacted with anger were more optimistic. These people are healthier compared with those who were frightened during the event. So in maddening situations, anger is not a bad thing to have. It's a healthier response than fear.41. Which statement will Jennifer Lerner agree with?A. It's better to be angry than to be frightened.B. Different reactions reflect different outlooks on life.C. Don't control your anger and it makes you powerful.D. Pessimistic people are generally healthier than optimistic people.42. What does the underlined word "both" refer to according to the passage?A. Fear and anger.B. Higher blood pressure and higher levels of the hormone.C. Blood pressure and pulse.D. Blood pressure and cortisone.43. The researchers made the experimented students angry by ______.A. recording their performance secretlyB. asking them to count to 6,200 again and againC. disturbing them and making them start all over againD. criticizing them when they made mistakes44. In what way can anger be beneficial to people?A. By showing their optimistic side.B. By reducing their stress.C. By reducing high blood pressure.D. By taking the place of fear.45. What is the story mainly about?A. The findings of new psychology research.B. What you can do with anger in certain cases.C. Different effects produced by anger and fear.D. Healthier responses in maddening situations.III.第一节基础写作假设你是校报小记者,最近进行了一次采访。
