1.下岗与再就业：Unemployment, laid-off
Well, yeah, I am not happy to say that unemployment has become a more and more serious problem now. Many people have been laid of work, even including some of my friends’ parents. They have little income to support their family. And to them, life is no longer a bowl of cherries.
I think it is really difficult for them to face such a problem, because they have never met this before. But after the reform has changed the past economy system, many people in state owned factories or companies are laid off.
However, I think everything has two sides: from a long-term point of view, laid-off can benefit the economic development of China. It also gives people another chance to have a new life, to start a new career. Laid-off gives the chance to bother individuals and society.
To solve such a problem is not easy because there are too many people and too few jobs. So, in one side, our government has to create more job opportunities and offer those people some free courses to become fit for a new job. In another side, the people themselves should be strong enough to face the reality and quickly improve themselves to find new jobs.
2.交通：T raffic and transportation:
Well, personally I think the traffic in China has greatly improved with the development of our economy. Let me take the traffic in Nanjing as an example:
Advantages:
1) we have broad street and highways , and they make long-distance travel easy
2) we have many kinds of traffic tools such as cars, bicycles, buses, and trains through the city and countries. What’s more, the city is going to have a new subway, and it will be more convenient for us to choose.
3) We have very good and strict policemen
Disadvantages:
1）However, there are still some problems in traffic, because there are two many people in the city, so during the rush hour, the buses are always so crowed, sometimes, I have to take a taxi to school if I don’t want to be late in the morning.
2) The facilities in the buses are not very good. In winter, it is too cold on the bus, but in summer, it is too hot. If we can have air-conditioners on every bus, that would be great.
3) Traffic jams and accident still happen every day. I think first our government should teach all the passengers and drivers the rules of the road, and then they should follow the traffic rules and always be careful.
So, I think the traffic in today’s China is much better than yesterday, but I hope it will become perfect tomorrow.
3.污染Pollution:
Well, as for pollution, I still remember once I saw an advertisement. On the picture, i saw a face of the earth, and it looked dirty, brown, and very upset. Besides it , there is a sign: We only have one earth.
Y es, I am sorry to say pollution has already become a big problem of the 21st century. While developing ourselves, we human are also destroying the earth. Many factories dump their water materials into nearby lakes and rivers, and of course that causes water pollution. People use plastic packets and throw them every where, and that causes white pollution. People burn fossil fuels like coal, natural gas, and the wasted gas from cars causes the green house effect. All this pollution makes our planet in danger.
Although I am not an expert on this, I still know that nature will sooner or later punish us, if we don’t do something to save the earth. we can save the earth in many different ways .
1,, our government should teach people to understand the dangerous situation,
2, limit the numbers of private cars,
3, make strict laws to prevent factories and individuals from dumping waste.
4, besides, we should try to find some new and clean energy instead of the old and dirty materials.
I think, as long as we keep doing, we can save our homeland and save ourselves.
4.人口问题Population explosion:
Well, overpopulation, or we can say population explosion has become one of the biggest problems in today’s world. And in China, the problem is even more serious.
As we know, China is a developed country with too many people. Although we have the one-child policy, we still have a large population. It is already over 1.2 billion and it is still growing. Our government wants to give everyone food and education, but they still can’t, because there are so many people. Overpopulation can lead to a lot of problems: some people may have not enough food, enough room, enough education, and enough job. Some may hate society and commit crimes.
However, we should see that things are becoming better and better. At least, it is under control. Now, most Chinese accept the one-child policy and some even don’t want to have their own child. Besides, our government is trying everything to develop our economy, and I believe that in the near future, the population can become under control, and at least almost no one will feel hungry.
5.住房：Accommodations:
Well, I am happy to say that the housing situation has been improved a lot in recent years in our country. In the past, people just lived in normal apartments or small house, but now we have more and more modern skyscrapers, and people have bigger house or bigger rooms than before. So, now they not only care about where to live, but also care about the inside decorations and the surroundings of their home, such as the scenery, and the near-by schools, stadiums and supermarkets.
Now I live in a three-bedroom apartment with my parents. The apartment is not very big, but we make it very comfortable to live in .We live on the second floor and there is no lift in our apartment. Outside my home, there is a swimming pool, a stadium, some restaurants, hair-dressers, and supermarkets, and also two squares. So life there is very relaxed and convenient.
But I know that there are still many people who live in small and narrow houses. Besides, our government no longer offers people free houses, so people have to buy their own houses, and many of them can’t pay for it.
However, I believe that the reform is just in its beginning stage, and later things will become better, and most people will accept it and get more chance to choose where to live.
6.电影movies:
Well, actually I am crazy about movies, especially some American movies . some people think American movies are rubbish, they make them just for money, but I don’t think so .Maybe some of them are really rubbish, but I am sure that most of the movies are still very good , such as the roman holiday and gone with the wind .
Personally, I love the movies of romance, such as the Roman Holiday, Pretty Women, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Ghost, Sleepless Night in Seattle and Titanic. Among them, Titanic is my favorite movie. The story took place in a big ship called Titanic. Jack and Rose, two young people
from two different worlds met and fell in love there, but later it sank, and in order to save Rose, Jack died. The plot is easy, but the story is very moving. I saw the movie many times, and I will see it again if I have time.
Besides romance, there are many other different kinds of movies, but it is hard to identify the types because some of them are comedies but the romance at the same time, some are cartoons but also the movies of romance. Some are about disasters but also describes love. So all in all, I like movies which is very touching and shows us the conflict, struggle of people especially when they are in love.
In my heart, movie has its magic power; everyone’s dream can become true in this wonderland. That’s why so many people in this world like to watch them, and laugh and cry with the actors and actress in the movies.
7.业余爱好：Hobby:
As an outgoing and energetic boy, I am interested in many things. I like all of music, jazz, pop songs, rock and roll, American country and western …. I also like outdoor sports, such as volleyball, soccer, but basketball is always my favorite. When I was a small boy, one day, I watched a basketball match of NBA on TV, and I saw the star, Michel Jordan. He was really fantastic, and from that time, I decided to learn basketball. As time passes by, now I am already a tall boy of 18, and through practice, I can play very well. I have entered most of the matches in high school, and I dare say I am a star player, because I know how to cooperate with others and how to shoot. I think I will even play better at college.
Besides sports, traveling is also one of my favorite hobbies. I like to visit interesting places to enjoy the beautiful landscape there. I love to make friends with different people and experience a different culture. I believe that can broaden my views. And of course , it can relax my body and keep me fit . so I like back-packing if I have time and money.

Well, as I know, there are many famous and wonderful cities in the world, such as Rome in Italy, Paris in France, Tokyo in Japan, and also Berlin in Germany. And it is really hard for me to visit all of them, but if I can choose, I will first visit New Y ork City in USA and Manchester in UK New Y ork City is also called the Big Apple. It is not the capital, but it is even more famous than Washington DC. There, we can find people of different nationalities and race, and experience the melting pot. Also, there are many wonderful places there. Central Park is a very large park, for different people to enjoy themselves. I want to and have a picnic on the green grass there, and then go skating. That would be fun. Fifth A venue is also very famous. New Y orkers love to walk along it and go shopping there. As for Broadway, there are many great theaters there, and we can see a play there. Wall Street is the money center of the USA; it is the heart of business. The empire building there has 102 floors, and that’s really amazing. Then we can take a ferry to the Stature of Liberty, which stands out in New Y ork Harbor.
Manchester is also a wonderful city. Its soccer team is well-known for its leader, David, Beckham. He is really a great player, and I seldom miss his match. Besides, Manchester is also a business and industrial center. It is also home to many universities.

Well, I think there are two kinds of famous cities in China, the first is developing very fast and is modernized, such as Shang’hai, Xia’men, and Shen’zhen. For example, Shang’hai now it has already become one of the business centers in Asia, and even in the world.
The second kind is the ancient countries with a lot of places of wonders, such as Beijing, Tian’jing, Nanjing, and Xi’an. Now, I am going to talk about Nanjing, my hometown.
Nanjing is a very famous historic city. It has a history of over 2000 years. It is also called the capital of 6 dynasties. There are many places to visit here, such as Confucious Temple, Xuan Wu Lake, Dr Sun-yat-sen’s mauseleun, the Ming city wall and the Ming Tomb.
Nanjing is also a very famous modern city. Here we have modern skyscrapers such as Hilton Hotel, and Jin’lin Hotel. We have very good shopping centers and city gardens. We have traditional restaurants and also modern western restaurants. We have first-class cinemas and city gardens. So life here is really happy.
The people in Nan’jing are literate and friendly. They are warm-hearted, direct and humorous. They are also very smart on business. So I am proud to be a native.
If there is something bad here, I think that should be the climate. The spring and autumn here are very short and it is very different in the four seasons. If the spring here can be longer, then Nanjing would become a fantastic place to live in .
10.世界的节日与背景Festivals and background knowledge in the world
Well, I think I am lucky to be a student in NFLS, because we have many foreign teachers here, and they told me a lot about western holidays and festivals such as May Day, April Fools Day, V alentine’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Halloween, and Christmas. Among them, I like Halloween and Christmas best.
Halloween is on October 31st. it is said that long long ago, people believed that ghost and monsters would walk around and took people they met away. So in order to save themselves, people begin to wear masks and pretend to be a ghost. That’s why now we can hold a costume party. As for the kids, they can go trick or treating. They can ask neighbors for candies, and if they don’t get candies, they will play tricks . That’s really very funny.
Christmas is a traditional western festival. It is celebrated on December the 24th, the Christmas eve, and the next day. It is said that Mary gave birth to Jesus on that day, so people celebrate it for him. On this day, families get together; decorate their houses with Christmas trees and gifts. Children believe that the kind Santa Clause will put the gifts into their socks. But actually the kind Father Christmas is always their father or mother. That’s really interesting.

Well, as we know, China is an ancient country, so it has a lot of interesting festivals such as the Mid-autumn Festival, the Lantern festival and Spring Festival. Among them, spring festival is the most important one.
When I was a small boy, my grandmother told me an old story about that. Long long ago, there was a monster called Nian. It liked to eat kids on the New Y ear’s Eve of the Lunar Calendar. So, in order to save the kids, people had to cook very good dinner and hold a party for him. Later, Spring Festival became popular. I don’t know if it is true or not, but I know that it is a very good holiday.
I can have seven days off, and get lucky money, enjoy a great dinner with jiao’zi, fish and so on .but before that, I have to help mum to clean the rooms and welcome guests. During the holidays, we always visit relatives, or send greetings to them. Besides, in China, many people like to watch the TV programs of CCTV, and laugh with the actors and actress.
I think Spring Festival is really great. it gives friends and relatives more chance to keep in touch , and make children very happy. That’s why I like it.

父爱，母爱，代沟，相互间关系，Family, parents and the generation gap.
Well, I think I am lucky to have my parents. Although they never say : son, we love you, but I know that they love me deeply. I still remember that one day,
My mother always regards me as a small boy, and she likes to do everything for me if she can, but she doesn’t know that I don’t like it. Even if I tell her, she won’t listen to me. My father is better. He can almost consider me equal and independent, and sometimes we can have a talk like man to man. I like that kind of feeling. But I think we still have a generation gap. That’s for sure, because their life is different. They experienced a lot of hard periods, such as poverty and Culture Revolution, so they didn’t have chance to get more education. But I am luckier than them, and now I live in the information age, so I have good education and I know a lot of new things. Sometimes I feel angry when they tell me that rock and popular music are rubbish, and I feel sleepy when they told me their past again and again, but in my heart , I know that they love me and they want me to make their dreams come true. So I will try my best to understand them.
In general, I am satisfied with my parents, but when I become one parent, I will let my child choose his/her way of life, and develop independent. I want to learn from foreigners and don’t let my child live in my house after 18. I hope I can be a better father than my father.

With the development of society, great changes have taken place in family life. One of them is bigger families become smaller and smaller. Many children leave their parents early to study or work, and later, they have their own small families. The other one is because of the one-child policy. More and more family has one child, and I think it has two sides.
The good side is , it can help our country to control the growing big population. The only child of the family can get the best food, best clothes, best room, and even best education. The parents only have to put all of their energy to one child, and they won’t be too busy. But there are still problems. In the past, children don’t feel lonely at home, because grandparents can take good care of them when their parents are busy, and they can also play with their brothers or sisters. But now, they have no one to be with, so they always feel lonely. I remember that when I was a little boy, I really hated to stay at home alone during holidays. That’s really sad. Also, because these children always get the best things, they may become selfish and naughty. So, if I can choose in the future,
I want to have two children, one boy, and one girl. They can learn and play together.

well, actually there are many VIPs in the world. We can see them on tv, newspapers and magazines. Merchant of V enice: (威尼斯商人)
This is one of his comedies. The story is very funny. A young man borrowed some money from a Jewish merchant to lend his friends. But when he couldn’t give the money back, the merchant asked him to cut the flesh to pay him. But in the end, his friend’s wife saved him and punished the merchant. The play shows that love and friendship can beat greed and evil , but it also shows us Jewish people lived sadly because people looked down upon them. Just because of this, the merchant wanted to have flesh, but he was too unkind, so he was punished in the end.
Besides his plays, Shakespeare is also good at writing poems. I read his sonnet 18 before, and I love it very much.

15.教育改革：Education reform (release the burden)
Well, in my view, education reform in china is really necessary, because the old system can’t wo rk well with the developing society.,
Because:
1, it gives students too much pressure. when they are very young, they have to study all the time to get high marks, because their parents want them to go into famous universities in the future. And teachers e verywhere pay much attention to the students’ marks.
2, the talents are limited. At school, every student is told to follow the teachers, and write the same correct answers on their test papers. The knowledge they get are solid.
3, people of countryside still haven’t enough education. Many young children have to quit school to work.
Therefore, I think the reform is really necessary.
1, our government should put more money to this field. Train more teachers and set more schools. 2, teachers should improve themselves and teach the students the latest things, and try to release their burden. Not only ask them to copy things, but also let them do some researches. By the way, I am proud to say that most of my teachers in NFLS have already noticed this, and to finish their homework is fun.
3, we should change our teaching style and teach both theory and practice.
4, tell the people the goal of education is not to get high marks, but to improve oneself
I believe if we keep working, the situation will become bette r and better. That’s for sure.

Actually, art plays a very important role in my life .they help me to find the nature beauty, and express myself in a quite different way.
There are many different art in the world . Music is a kind of art. We can’t see it, but we can feel it. When we are happy, we like to listen to happy songs, when we are sad, they can make us smile again. Painting is a kind of art. We can’t taste it, but we can try to find out what the painters want to tell us. Movies are art too. It has a magic power to make us laugh and cry, so I like it best. In my heart, literature has its magic power. It is a wonderful art through novels, and poems. As a boy, of course I love basketball, soccer and table-tennis, because they can make me stronger and healthier in body. But I also love literature, because it can make me literate and knowledgeable. Literature plays a very important role to express people’s feelings, describe the reality, and teach people some lessons. For example, Robert’s poem ―A Red Red Rose‖ tells his love how deeply he loves her, and make us readers moved. Emily Dickinson’s ―I am nobody‖tells others she hates publicity. 18．武器
With the development of the world, countries pay more and more attention to national defense, and they put more and more money to invent new weapons. Personally, I don’t like this, and I think sooner or later, they will be punished by their own deeds.
In the past, people used swords to fight, and that could only kill one or two people at the same time, later, people invented powder and guns to kill, and they can destroy a group of people. Then during the World War II, Americans used atomic bombs, and they killed thousands of people, and those who went through were unhealthy all their life. See, from past till now, the weapons become more and more advanced, and it can destroy more and more humans and things. That’s really terrible. At present, some countries still do research on nuclear weapons secretly, and they think if they get it, they can defend themselves and even control the world. However, they don’t realize that if their enemies also get such weapons, then what could they do? The nuclear weapon can destroy a city, a country and even our earth. if not used in a correct way. So every year, the United Nations will send groups of experts to see if some countries are doing the research, and if they do, they would be punished. I really agree with this action, and I hope people can stop doing stupid things. By the way, I think if those countries have both time and money, they can use them to do research to find new medicines to cure AIDS, to look for clean energies to prevent pollution, and to help the poor countries to develop. That is much more meaningful.
Therefore, personally, I am strongly against putting more money to invent weapons. We ought to do other useful things to keep the world peace.
19.建筑Architecture.
Well, to be frank, I am not an expert on this topic, but I still know different countries have different style of architecture, and different people may have different taste, but personally I like Chinese and British traditional architecture better than modern skyscrapers.
Chinese traditional buildings are very high and always have curved eaves. They are made of wood or bamboo instead of stone or metal. Also, traditional buildings always have doors and windows, and they are always decorated with paintings.
Traditional architecture in European countries is called Gothic .They have pointed roof, and flying buttress .Most of them are castles. I am not interested in how people made them, but I really like to visit them, because I think they are mysterious and romantic. In some old castles, maybe I can even meet a pretty and sad ghost. Who knows?
I remember once I saw a picture of a very beautiful castle, and it is the palace of Cinderella in Disney World in Florida. It is one of the loved places in Disney Land, and people from all over the world like to visit here to see performance during the day, and to meet pretty Cinderella at night. It is decorated differently every year, and on that picture, it was decorated just like a big birthday cake, because that was the 50th anniversary of Disney World. I like the castle very much, and if I have money, I will take my little niece to visit Disney land to see this magic castle, and I may also go to some old towns in UK to have fun.

Actually, art plays a very important role in my life .they help me to find the nature beauty, and express myself in a quite different way.

They think they are useless and only to make money. But most young people love popular music, because it always talk about things they like, such as friendship, love , dreams, and so on. 21.世界风景点Famous places of wonders (tourist attractions)
Well, as a fan of traveling, I always read some magazines about the places of wonders both home and abroad. As a country with a long history, China has a lot of places of wonders, but I bet among them, the Great Wall is the most well-known all over the world.it lies across more than 6 provinces in the North of China.It is a surprisingly long wall, made of stones.
It is one of the most famous wonders in the world. It is very grand and huge, showing the Chinese skill and intelligence.
It was built more than 2000 years ago, for military purpose, to prevent enemies, but today, it becomes a very fantastic spot.
By the way, one thing I’d like to mention is that it is a man-made architecture that can be seen from the moon.
Outside China, there are also many places of interests, such as Pyramids in Egypt, The London Tower in UK, and the Disney Land in USA, BUT among those places, I want to visit those famous castles or churches such as Westminster Church in UK. They are traditional architecture in European countries called Gothic I am not only interested in how people made them, but also like to recall the history there myself, because I think they are mysterious and romantic. In some old castles, maybe I can even meet a pretty and sad ghost. Who knows?
So if I have money, I will go there to have a visit later in my life.

Well, as a fan of traveling, I always read some magazines about the places of wonders both home and abroad, and from those magazines, I get to know some rivers of the world, such as the Thames in UK, the Nile in Egypt, and the Amazon in USA. Among them, the Thames is my favorite.
The river Thames is famous for its history and its culture. People from all over the country like to visit there to experience its charm.
The river has something for everyone. If you enjoy peace and natural beauty, then the gentle upper Thames will suit you. At Oxford, the river springs to life. Here you can take a cruise, or just sit at a riverside pub and watch the beautiful landscape there. If you are energetic, then you can go with the Thames through beautiful countryside to historic places, and pass many different places you can take a boat through the Thames Path.
Besides a famous place of interest, the Thames is also a useful river for trade. In the past, many business men shipped their goods by it. Also, it is a river full of stories and events. During the Victorian Age, people, especially the Royal family liked to have many activities either on or beside it, such as a picnic or a rowing match. .Many activities of today started from those days. So, I think Thames is really a fantastic place to visit.

Well, as a fan of traveling, I always read some magazines about the places of wonders both home and abroad, and from those magazines, I get to know some lakes of the world, such as the Caspian Sea , which is the biggest sea in the world, and it is almost three times as large as Hong Kong in China. Also, thanks to our geography teacher, I learnt more about the other lakes in the world. Now I am going to talk about some of the lakes that I know
The five biggest lakes between America and Canada are蘇必利爾湖（Lake Superior）,密歇根湖（Lake Michigan），休倫湖（Lake Huron），伊利湖（Lake Erie）和安大略湖（Lake Ontario）。Among them, the Superior Lake is the largest. The name came from the French colonist in the 19th century, and the meaning of the name is the lake which is in the north.
There is another famous lake called Niagara River. It is also a path connected the two big lakes , Erie and Ontario. It started from Buffalo in New Y ork State in America in the south, to Ontario province in Canada. In the middle of the river, we can see the steep cliff, and enjoy the wonder Niagara Fall. It is one of the seven wonders in the world, and people from both home and broad like to visit it . In the sun, if lucky enough, visitors can see the beautiful rainbows , and take a cruise through the fall. That’s really fascinating.As an energetic boy who loves adventures, I really like to visit the fall and to experience the wonderful journey myself.

Well, as a fan of traveling, I always read some magazines about the places of wonders both home and abroad, and from those magazines, I get to know something about the lakes in the world. Thanks to our geography teacher, I learnt more details about them.
There are a lot of mountains in the world, and among them, the Himalayas and the Kunlun shan in Asia, the Alps in Europe, the Rockies in North America, and the Andes in South America are the most well-known. They are steep, splendor, and undulate. (起伏的)。
Now, I am going to talk more about the Himalayas.
Himalayas lies in the south of the Tibet tableland. It goes across many countries like China, Nepal, India and Pakistan. But the most of it is between China and Nepal. It is one of the youngest mountains in the world, about ten million to two million years. The highest mountain of the Himalayas mountain chain is as high as 6000 thousand meters. That’s really amazing. So people call it the place where the land meets the sky. And it is also called the ridge of the world. (世界屋脊)。
The slope of the south is very steep, but the one in the north is better. But the south slope has more rain and the climate is better to live in . so some people in Tibet live there.
Also, because of its incredible height, it has become the goal of many mountain climbers. Although it is really dangerous, many of them still come all the way from their home to take the adventure. The Chinese mountaineer first got to its top on May 25th, in 1960.
For all the reasons above, I like Himalayas best, and if I have the chance, I will go there myself to see the place where the land meets the sky.

Well, whenever talk about this topic; I will think of Martin Luther King’s world famous speech, I have a dream. His dream is to make people from different race equal, and he is really a hero. However, compared to his dream, my dream is much more ordinary. That is to become a successful professor. To be exact, I want to get a position in university and teach the college students literature or history in English .Besides, I want to do some researches in the education area and write some books. I think that is the best job that I can get in the world. So, I want to choose English as my major.
I think this job is ideal because:
A.The job itself it very challenging. The job requires a lot of knowledge and skills. to be a teacher, you should at the same time behave as an actor, instructor, group leader just like a soccer team captain. This will encourage me to go on my life-long development
B.The job can offer me chance to get along with young people everyday, sharing their happiness and sadness, and give them some useful instructions. Because they are already grown-ups, we can talk about things more deeply.
C.it can offer me spare time to do research and write novels. Although I am an out-going boy and a fan of all the sports, I also like reading and writing indoors sometimes. That gives me time to think and to get knowledge. If I can, I will write some books on literature and education, and I hope they can give people some ideas while give me some money.
Everyone has a dream, and I believe so long as I work hard from now on, I can walk closer and closer to my dream. After all, nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
26. 学习动机+专业兴趣Aims of study and Major
Well, although I am an out-going boy and a fan of all the sports, I still like reading and writing indoors. I think literature is one of the gifts from the god. In my heart, literature has its magic power. It is a wonderful art through novels, and poems. It can make one t can make one literate and knowledgeable. Literature plays a very important role to express feelings, describe the reality, and teach people some lessons. For example, Robert’s poem ―A Red Red Rose‖ tells his love how deeply he loves her, and make us readers moved. Emily Dickinson’s ―I am nobody‖ tells others she hates publicity. Shakespeare’s plays showed us what happened at his time, and teach people to be kind and brave.
That’s why I love literature. Also, luckily enough, I am a student from NFLS, so I have chance to get a high English level, and through study, I love English very much, and I think it is one of the beautiful languages in the world besides Chinese and French.. Therefore, I interested in learning British and American literature, and also the history of them. I want to deal with all the famous poets like Shelly, Byron, and Keats. I want to study the life of all the novelists such as Mark Twain, O’ Henry and Charles Dickens. I want to read every lines of the plays of Shakespeare and write down my feelings.
In the future, I want to get a position in university and teach the college students literature or history in English. Besides, I want to do some researches in the education area and write some books. So I choose English as my major.
27.单亲家庭的苦恼与问题T roubles in the one-parent families.
Well, I am sorry to say that although the fast development of our society also brings us a lot of problems in today’s world. Such as the rise of divorce or ―easy sex‖. That’s why many one-parent families appear. And regardless of age, sex, religion or nationality, all of these families are suffering from many troubles, and one of the biggest problems is the bad influence on children.
As we know, it is much easier for the adults to deal with changes of life and disappointment of the others. They can control their emotions, anger and mood. but for the children , it is more difficult.
If the parents get divorced, first, their children have to face the choice that is to choose who to live with. In the past, they can happily live with father and mother, but now, they should make a choice between the two, that is really terrible for them.
If from the very beginning, they live with one parent, which is better. After all, they don’t need to see their parents separate themselves. However, later in their life, they may be laughed by other children, and sooner or later, they will wonder why they have no dad or mum. For the boy with a mother, he has no chance to talk with an adult like man to man, and he can’t learn things from an adult. Some of them will even become womanish. And the same is true to a girl with a father. Also, because those parents have to work, and raise their children, they can’t take very good care of the children. So some of them may make bad friends, and destroy themselves. That’s really terrible.
Therefore, society should give those families some helps. They can give them more money to raise children, hold some speeches for the parents to become better and to send some people to talk and instruct the child. Also, when parents want to divorce, they shouldn’t make a quick decision.
28.犯罪率
Well, I am sorry to say that although the fast development of our society also brings us a lot of problems in today’s world. Such as the rise of crimes.
Actually, I am very interested in this issue, because crimes are a problem that has something to do with everybody. If the rate is high, then people will feel unsafe and troubled. If it is low, people can have a happier life. However, I am sorry to say that the rate in today’s society is higher than before, yet I still see hope to control it .
There are many reasons for the rise of crimes.
1, more and more things about violence and killing appear on the mass media. We can see all this on TV, newspapers, magazines, books, and also pop songs. They give children very bad influence. And some of them like to imitate, and then commit crimes.
2, although the world is developing fast, there are still some people can’t get enough bread to support themselves. Some of them begin to hate society and want to do something bad to destroy it.
3,some people haven’t much knowledge about laws, and some even don’t know they are send to jails because they have broken the laws .
The rate of crime is different in countries. Although in general it is rising, I am glad to see that in China, it is still in control. It is much safe to walk in the street in Nanjing at midnight than in New Y ork. That is because our government pay much attention to this social problems and we have very strict laws, and very good policemen. However, crimes still happen everywhere.
So, I think we need to action quickly to solve the problem. We should teach people more about laws, and also give the criminals strong punishment. We should develop quickly to give everyone enough food.
29.中美关系Sino-US relations

As we know, nowadays, some people in the world think China and America will sooner or later have conflicts, and even have wars. However, I think their views are groundless. As we know, China and America had experienced wars before, but in today’s world, peace and development are the two main themes, and we should always look into the bright side.
In one side, as we know, China is the biggest developing country in the world, while USA is the biggest developed nation. They are both members of the UN. Although they are different in many field like culture, economy, and social system, they still have a lot in common, especially in the issues of development, they have the same interest, and the same duty. So, they need to cooperate with each other and develop a stable friendship to keep the peace.
In another side, with the development of today’s world, there are many competitions between nations in science, technology and economy. so, it is natural for the two nations to compete. But the most of the competitions are positive and can speed up the development of the two.
Now the two countries have already got through many difficulties hands in hands, such as to overcome the Asian finance crisis, to keep the peace in Korea and etc.
We Chinese is always a nation who love peace. We said to the world long ago that we need peace and we love it .Even if we are stronger and stronger, we will never have the greed to control the
world. We always keep our promise. I believe the same is also true to most American people. However, there are still many problems need to solve between the two, such as the issue of Taiwan, and the human right. However, so long as America stands for one china policy, it will not influence the relation
Therefore, I think the two countries should always hold the policy of struggle for similarities while keep difference and work hard for a better world.
30.中欧关系Sino- Europe
Well, besides the Sino-us relations, the foreign relations between two rising political powers—China and Europe are also very important.
In one side, China is the biggest developing country in the world. In another side, Europe is the center of global attention in the 21st century.
They are both members of the UN. Although they are different in many field like culture, economy, and social system, they still have a lot in common, especially in the issues of development, they have the same interest, and the same duty. So, they need to cooperate with each other and develop a stable friendship to keep the peace.
Luckily enough, now while Sino-U.S. ties were influenced during the Dalai Lama’s visit to Washington and Taiwan leader Chen Shui-b ian’s to New Y ork, an European diplomatic delegation visit china and improve the Sino –Europe relation. Unlike U.S. the European Union (EU) don’t t look at China as a ―strategic competitive rival‖ , but they think on the contrary and encourage its members to increase contact with China.
The delegation met Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Primer Zhu Rongji, and put forward 75 proposals They help to improve the political dialogue and economic cooperation between China and EU members. The European countries think China is a growing nation, and an economic powerhouse of tomorrow, They believes that contact with China is conducive to the interests of the EU, though they have the two different political systems
However, there are still many problems need to solve between the two. With the development of today’s world, there are many competitions between nations in science, technology and economy. It is natural for the two nations to compete. But the most of the competitions are positive and can speed up the development of the two.
So, I believe if the two hold friendly ideas and work hard to establish an ―all-round partnership‖ between themselves, they can make our world a better place.
31.中日关系Sino-Japan relation
Well, I think it is really hard for me to describe Sino-Japan relation in a short time, because it is really very complicated, and it is changing all the time.
Actually whenever we talk about the relation between the two countries, we will think of the World War II. In China, if you go to school and know how to read, you cannot forget Japan.
Sino-Japan relation occupies 2/3 of our history books. Among the countries that invaded China, Japan is the worst. It committed many terrible crimes, such as the Nanjing Massacre (南京大屠杀)。
After the world war two, both of the two countries have overcome many difficulties, and develop fast. During that time, the relation went well step by step, and they both help to keep the world peace.
However, Sino-Japan relation is not as good as it was 20 years ago. Many problems are existing between 2 nations. The history problem is one of them.
Now in Japan, there are still some politicians, give their people the wrong idea that Chinese are playing the "history card" in order to prevent Japan from becoming a superpower. They distort the history and deny the crimes they did now in Japan, many people believe that the war was to establish a free-trade in East Asia .What they did make most of Chinese angry and cause bad influence on the relation between the two.
I think the reason why they do this is because a small group in Japan feels worried to see the fast developing China. They are afraid to that once China become strong, they have to pay back for what they have done to China. But, personally, I think they are wrong.
We Chinese is always a nation who love peace. We said to the world long ago that we need peace and we love it .Even if we are stronger and stronger, we will never have the greed to control the world. We always keep our promise. All that we want is that Japan can tell the world the truth , not to use wars to let them pay back .
Therefore, I think to keep a good Sino-Japan relation, there is only one way to go _____ to keep the trust between the two, and tell the world the truth of history.
32.买车与租车Cars, to buy or to rent
With the development of our economy. the transportation in China has greatly improved. And more and more private cars are available to ordinary families.. They make traveling easier than before.
However, personally, I think it is better for families to rent a car, because buying a car will cause a lot of troubles.
1, to ordinary families, the income is still not very high. Although they can have enough money to get good food, give the children enough food, or even pay the bank interest to live in a new house. However, to buy a new car will still cost them much. If they use the money to buy a new car, I am sure they will have less money to enjoy themselves.
2, some people think it is more convenient to have your own car. Then you can drive your car at any time. But unlike foreign countries, most of Chinese use bicycles, not cars. So there are not so many parking lots, and also you have to pay to park your cars. That’s really expensive.
3, cars will give you a lot of troubles. If something wrong with it, you should take troubles to fix it . Even if it works well, you should use some money to keep it going well, and to buy gas. That’s also expensive.
But to rent a car is totally different. Anytime if you want to rent a car, you can just call the company, then a new car will stop at your gate, and you don’t need to worry about it . the company will take care of other things.
That’s why I think to rent a car is much better.
33.学校生活School life : T eachers and schoolmates, class, courses, and activities
Well, I really like this topic very much, because I am so proud to be a student in NFLS that I am happy to talk about it all the time. The life here is very rich and exciting. Let me tell you in three different parts.
1, Teachers and classmates
actually, there is a very famous saying in our school, that is : ― all the teachers are like classmates, and all the classmates are like teachers.‖I think this is a very good sentence to describe the relation between the teachers and students. Unlike some other schools, the teachers here are of the first class, they have very good education background, many of them have been to other countries, and they take many good ways in teaching back to China. They treat students equally and friendly.
As for the students, because every student here had passed very hard exams before they come here, so most of them are very smart and clever. They like to search for new ideas and to crate things. With the help of the teachers, they are excellent in many fields like the science and the sports. I am really proud to say that as one of them, I am also good at many things, such as computer operating and basketball.
2, Classes, courses and elective courses
Unlike other school, our school is special in our courses. We have small English classes of only 28 people. That gives us more chance to practice in class. As a foreign language school, we have at least two English classes every day, and we have to recite every page of our text before out teachers. Every term we have both oral and writing tests. We also have very good foreign teachers. Just because of them, I begin to like language and I want to choose them as my major.
Besides normal courses, we also have elective courses once a week. Students can choose what they like. For example, I used to choose American and British Culture and Basketball and oral English, and they make me good at literature and sports.
3, Activities
Besides very good courses, we have a lot of wonderful activities. We have many festivals, such as the sports festival, the foreign language festival, the art festival and the science festival. They give us chance to show the others what we are good at , and to train our ability. For example, I acted in dramas in a foreign language festival, and I won games in the basketball game during the sports festival. They give me chance to show my ability, and they make many people remember my name. I am really proud of that.
Actually in our school, if you work hard, you will have chance. That’s why I will never forget my life here.
34.出国留学热The trend(趋势) of international study
Nowadays, with the development of our economy, we have more chance to know the world and let the world know us. And that brings a lot of changes in our daily life . one of this is the trend of studying abroad.
In my view, the trend is not bad itself. But we have to be careful when we have our own choice. There are many reasons why people go abroad. Some are trying to get a higher degree, some want to get more experience of life, and some just want to work there and get more money. But after all, they go abroad in order to have a better life in the future.
However, when they go abroad, they have to face a lot of difficulties that they never had before. They have to put themselves in a completely different society, they have no families to depend on, so they have to face troubles themselves. Some even can’t find a job to support their daily life, and their life abroad is a nightmare to them.
So I think we need to be careful when we choose to study abroad. We should first make clear what we really want, and we should know deeply the moon abroad is not always brighter than the one at home. We should think carefully about some questions such as : what are we going to do in the future? Can the study really benefit us ? What will wait for us when we come back?
if we can face all the problems, then it is not bad to go abroad. And if I have chance after I leave college, I will go abroad to broaden my views and experience the totally new life. But now, I think I am still young and I need to get more experience. I am still not ready for the life abroad. But during my college life, I will work hard to get ready.
35. 为什么选择南大Why do I choose Nanjing University to study in :
Actually, except Nanjing University, I never think of any other universities to study after high school. I choose it for a lot of reasons.
1, it is located in Nanjing, my hometown, which is a beautiful city known as the capital of six dynasties and having a rich cultural heritage. As a native citizen, I love my hometown , so I am always on the side of its universities. I believe the university here can give me best education.
2, because it is one of the best universities in Nanjing , in China, and even in the world. It is a key comprehensive university with a long history. As I know, the University dates back to 1902, and changed a dozen names such as National Southeast University, National Fourth Zhongshan University, and National Central University. Then in August 1949, it was named National Nanjing University. It is a big university with two campuses, one in Gulou and the other in Pukou. The University celebrates its anniversary on May 20 every year. And this year is its 100th. Professor Jiang Shusheng,is the president
It is an excellent comprehensive college with 10 schools and 36 departments. Many world famous professors and scientists used to study or teach here, such as yang zheng ning. Every year, they win world awards and provide a good environment for teaching and research.
Also, the facilities (设备)here are very good . There are 75 laboratories on campus, and a lot of sports places like tennis court, basketball ground and swimming pools. T hat’s cool to me, because I am always a sports fan.
3, also, the university is famous for my major. It has many foreign students here, and it has an American culture center. I am sure I can learn a lot here, and from what I learn, I can become closer to my dream. (To be a professor in language studying and teaching.)
so I really really hope that I can have a chance to study at your university. That is not only my dream, but also my parents dream. No matter I can enter it or not, I will always require my self to do follow your fine school tradition of "being rigorous, truthful, diligent, and innovative"

36. 学习策略，方法My studying methods and habits.
As I know , there is a famous saying in English, that is : ― all work but no play makes Jack a dull boy‖ . I really agree with this. So I believe the best studying policy is to study while playing.
But of course it is much easier to just say it. How to treat studying just like playing is really hard, but thanks to our school’s find tradition, I get it.
1, I always try to form my interest in the subject. For example, actually, before I came into NFLS, I am not very interested in English, and I think boys needn’t learn language well. but thanks to our school and our teachers, I improved my English level, and then I try to read some novels and watch American movies, just like this, step by step, I begin to like English, and I want to choose it as my major.
2, I am not only satisfied with what we learn at school. Actually, everyone knows that 40 minutes in class is quite limited. Only remember what the teachers say is not enough. I like to go to the libraries and read stories and research papers in all kinds of subjects, and I am happy to see they help me to do better in exams because I know more details , I understand the text better.
3, I pay attention to my work efficiency. I like to do most of my work when I am in a very good state. I never study when I am sleepy.
4, also, I believe to have a good health is also very important. But I don’t have such problems, because I always play basketball in my spare time, and they help me to keep slender and fit .
37.我的童年+个人成长经历My childhood+ my primary school life + my middle school life
In my view, I think childhood is the happiest and important time of one’s life. If one has a good childhood with a lot if wonderful memories, he is luckier, and he will have a better personality, but if one have a sad childhood such as Oliver Twist in Charles Dickens’s novels, he is very unlucky. Then the school life is also very important, because that is the time when we learn new things and decide what we are going to do in the future. They help us to build our own features. (特点)
I think I am lucky, because I have a very good childhood and school life.
In a world, I have a sweet childhood, a nice primary school life and a wonderful middle school life.
I met different people and learnt different things in these three different periods. They help me to build my body as well as set my dreams. I will never forget them.
38.我的个性：My personality
Well, actually I think it is really hard to analyze one’s personality in a short time, because it is really complicated. However, I would consider myself as a confident, friendly and cooperative type of person.
1, thanks to my school life in NFLS, I learnt a lot of things, and one of them is to be confident and never miss a chance to show my own ability. Unlike other schools, NFLS has a lot of activities every year, such as the sports festival, the foreign language festival, the art festival and the science festival. We are encouraged to show the others what we are good at , and to train our ability. Therefore, I had a lot of chance to prove my talent. For example, I acted in dramas in a foreign language festival, and I won games in the basketball game during the sports festival. I still remember the first time when I was on the stage, I was really very nervous, but sooner or later, I got used to it, and from then on, I never feel too shy to prove my talent. Now, as a famous player in our school basketball team, and as a member of the drama society, many people remember my name. I am really proud of that. So here, in NFLS, I become very confident.
2, I am also a rather cooperative person. In English class, our teacher always asks us to make presentations in small groups, and I always work well with my classmates. Outside class, and on the playground, when I play basketball, I also get on well with all the team members, because I know one truth: Two heads are always better then one. So I always try to be modest, and listen to others to do a better job.
3, I am also quite imaginative and creative. I used to win some prizes in painting, and writing essays. I am always fond of searching for new ideas and knowledge, because as the write said in the novel ―who moves my cheese ―, the world is changing, and we should change with it instead of just sitting and wait. I like to control my life, and I like to make changes.
Well, but I still have some shortcomings. For example, I like to make jokes, some of them will make my friends angry, and I am really sorry for that. Also, I think sometimes, I am too eager to win, so I made some quick decisions and I made some mistakes. However, as time goes by, I bet I will become more mature and more practical.
By the way, although I am an energetic big boy, deep down somewhere, I am a kind person. I have my soft side. I am easily moved by movies or novels. That’s also why I choose language as my major, because I think language is the most magic art to show one’s feelings.
39. 大陆与台湾Mainland and T aiwan
As we know, look back into our history, Taiwan was one part in China since long time ago, nobody can deny it, but due to historical and political reason, it still can’t go back to China. And the relation between the two has always been a sensitive (敏感) question in the world. Some
countries such as America and Japan still make use of it to strike China. However, our government always holds our one china policy and will never give up the strait.
Actually, I bet most of people in Taiwan want it to come back. However, there are still some people in favor of Taiwan independence for their evil purpose. Recently, in the name of democracy and counter-terrorism, chen’shui’bian held a so-called sanzhi meeting and drew ten points conclusion to push through his "Taiwan independence" separatist line. He also said that if mainland uses military power to take back Taiwan, then we are terrorism. However, he is totally wrong.
First, he ignored the history. Taiwan was one part of China since long ago, and due to the aggressions of foreign countries, it was separated from mainland. Even if we take it back by military power, we are still the just and right side.
Second, he didn’t realize the situation both in China and in the world. Now, the peace and development are the main subjects in the world, and most people in the world stand on mainland’s side and its one-china policy. Also, inside China, the development in science, technology and economic is very fast, and it requires more cooperation within China. If Taiwan returns, then things will become easier. Besides, as China is growing stronger, Macao and Hong Kong have already returned. And our government put the people’s interests first, so they have special policy for the two, and with the help of mainland, the two become well.
Thirdly, Taiwan issue is a issue about our sovereignty（主权）. It is a serious issue, in which we should never give up our point. Our government always show Taiwan friendly gestures (姿态)，but we never promise to give up Taiwan. If needed, one day we may use it , but of course everyone don’t like to have wars.
Therefore, I think Taiwan should cooperate with mainland, and try to solve the problems through dialogues instead of hatred (憎恨). If the problem is solved, Chinese people will become much happier.
40.朝鲜与韩国North and South Korea
As we know, Korea is the only country in the world which is still divided. In 1948 it was divided into the Democratic People’s Republic (North Korea, and the Republic of Korea (South Korea). In 1945 Korea it was liberated from the Japanese, But due to the general political situation in the world, Korea was divided only three years later. The North followed Soviet Union and found . a communist government under Kim Il-sung, The United States had occupied the South and the Republic of Korea was founded. From this time on the South and the North developed in a totally different way.
The Korean War (June, 25 1950? July 27, 1953) started because the North tried to unify the country by force. The result was a disaster on both sides. Millions of persons were separated from their families. But as time flashes by, under the peaceful international situation, the two begin to cooperate with each other in many fields like economic and entertainment, and I am sure, sooner or later, the need of more cooperation will improve their relation greatly.
However, the long lasting division of the country caused many cultural differences in two sides, not only the social system, but also people’s minds. Therefore, the reunification in a peaceful way still has a long way to go. Actually, South Korea has been trying to unite the two socities, but the work is only one-sided. On the 20th of September 1985 some citizens could for the first time cross the border for a short time. Since then several meetings of this kind took place. When the South Koreans voted for President Kim Dae-jung in December 1997, they elected a President who
announced that he will do his best in order to improve the relations with the North. Because of his efforts, to improve the relations towards the North, President Kim Dae-jung was honored with the Peace Nobel Prize in December 2000.
Recently, the two leaders have already met each other and discussed a list of things. The two decided to have cooperation in more fields. However, the path is long and not easy to take. First, they should solve the economic problems. Now, the balance of trade is still in the deficit(赤字)，and the living standard of North Korea is much lower than that of South Korea. The North Korea is still the most isolated country in the world... That’s why the North needs the support from other countries.
As a friendly nation, China always like to see the improvement of the relation between the two, and we are glad to offer them any help. I believe that in the near future, the relation will be improved at a high speed, but both, the two sides are facing many challenges.
I really hope that one day, there will no difference between the two sides, and there will be a reunited Korea in the world. I am sure that will help to maintain the world peace.
41.美国与伊拉克America and Iraq
When we talk about the relation between America and Iraq, we can’t forget the Gulf war. In 1991, Iraqi military led by Saddam Hussein invaded the oilfield of Kuwait. But shortly afterwards the US went in and used its overwhelming air power to beat Iraq the war ended with the failure of Iraq.
Now, America is going to start war against Iraq again, and this time, its reason is to make Iraq stop doing research on weapons and limit its military force. President Bush shouts to the world that America stars war to keep peace and save the world.
Personally, I don’t agree with him, and I still hope the United Nation can do something to stop the war before it begins, and try to solve the issue through political ways instead of force.
Actually, the hatred between the two nations has already appeared long time ago, even before the gulf war. As the superpower, USA always wants to be the policeman of the world, and it claims everything it did is to save the world or protect its just right. Just in name of justice, it started Vietnam wars and Korea Wars, many people died and many homes were destroyed.
As for the side of Iraq, it also has fault. In order to control the oil market, it invaded Kuwait, and did a lot of improper things. But after that, it had been punished strongly by the United Nation, and the people there are still suffering after the war. But now, America started wars again, in name of peace.
I am really sorry for that, and I don’t like what America did. I think, no matter for what reason, wars should always be our last choice to solve problems. We can’t use a war in name of peace. Now the keynote of our time is peace and development. Why can’t the two negotiate and cooperate? That is because of greed and ambition for power. I really hope UN can do something to stop it before it causes disasters on both sides.
42. 战争Wars
Well, most people agree that a time of peace is better than a time of war. But then comes the question: why do we always have wars in our history?
I think the answer to that question varies to different people. but I am sure there is one deep reason. Greed and ambition for power. Take the first and second world wars for example, first the imperialist wanted to divide their colonies, and then they invaded other countries and then the other countries resisted.
After the World War 2, there are no big wars which involved so many countries, and the keynote of the world is ―peace and development‖, but local and civil wars still take place here and there. The terrorism and hegemony still threaten the world peace. In some corners of the world, people are still dying and starving.
In 1991, there was the Gulf war, and now, America will start wars against Iraq again. Some think America fights for a reason to prevent Iraq from threatening the world peace, but others argue that their target is not Iraq, but the whole world. Their ambition is to become the leader of the world and make other countries obey them.
Personally, I think no matter for what reason, history has already taught us enough lessons about the harm of wars. It separated families and friends, it killed many innocent lives and it destroyed people’s home.
However, I am sorry to see that with the development of our economy, more and more high-tech are put into weapons. And by clicking the button of a nuclear war, cities may be destroyed overnight. That’s really horrible.
I really hope people can take positive (积极)actions to keep the world peace, and try to solve disputes through cooperation and dialogue.
I remember that the world famous rock star Michel Jackson had a song to call people to keep peace. I hope everyone can do as he sings in the song ―make the world a better place without wars. for our children.
43.裁军Disarmament
Well, the topic reminds me of what UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said before :―Let us at least make sure that the next generation understands, better than ours has done, or at least mine has done, that human security is as much about governance, human rights, and social justice, as it is about arsenals.‖
As we know, after World War 2, there are no big wars which involved a lot of countries, and the keynote of the world is ―peace and development‖, but local and civil wars still take place here and there. Terrorism and hegemony(霸权主义) still threaten the world peace. In some corners of the world, people are still dying and starving.
With the development of science and technology, we have a lot of new weapons, such as nuclear weapons, missiles, battleships,, tanks, and other chemical weapons. As the weapons become more and more advanced, they are also more dangerous. Personally, I think it is not wise to put more and more investment on doing such kind of researches, On the contrary, we should put forward the disarmament, otherwise, sooner or later, we will be punished by our own deeds.
Take the nuclear weapons as example; one simple missile can even destroy a city in a minute. That’s really terrible. And if one country has got a new weapon, the others might feel unsafe, and they might put more money to continue the arm race. Thus, a lot of money and time are wasted. However, these countries don’t realize that if their enemies also get such weapons, then what could they do? Nuclear weapons can destroy a city, a country and even our earth. if not used in a correct way.
So , in my view, disarmament is a good solution 。
By the way , I am glad to see that now more and more countries have noticed the importance of it, and the United Nation has already take some actions to put forward this movement in the world. Every year, it sends groups of experts to see if some countries are doing improper researches
And if they do, they would be punished. I really agree with this action, and I hope people can stop
