the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the blank is

identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer

Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words more

than once.

Questions 26 to 35 are based on the following passage.

What is it about Americans and food? We love to eat, but we feel 26 about it afterward. We say we want only the best, but we strangely enjoy junk food. We’re 27 with health and weight loss but face an unprecedented epidemic of obesity (肥胖). Perhaps the 28 to this ambivalence (矛盾情结) lies in our history. The first Europeans came to this continent searching for new spices but went in vain. The first cash crop (经济作物) wasn’t eaten but s moked. Then there was Prohibition, intended to prohibit drinking but actually encouraging more 29 ways of doing it.

The immigrant experience, too, has been one of inharmony. Do as Romans do means eating what “real Americans” eat, but our nation’s foo d has come to be 30 by imports — pizza, say,

or hot dogs. And some of the country’s most treasured cooking comes from people who arrived here in shackles.

Perhaps it should come as no surprise then that food has been a medium for the nation’s defining struggles, whether at the Boston Tea Party or the sit -ins at southern lunch counters. It is integral to our concepts of health and even morality whether one refrains from alcohol for religious reasons or evades meat for political 31

. But strong opinions have not brought 32 . Americans are ambivalent about what they put in their mouths. We have become 33 of our foods, especially as we learn more about what they contain.

The 34 in food is still prosperous in the American consciousness. It ’s no coincidence, then, that the first Thanksgiving holds the American imagination in such bondage(束缚). It’s what we eat — and how we 35 it with friends, family, and strangers — that help define America as a community today.

paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more

than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by marking

the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.

Animals on the Move

A) It looked like a scene from “Jaws” but without the dramatic music. A huge shark was slowly swimming through the water, its tail swinging back and forth like the pendulum of a clock. Suddenly sensitive nerve ending in the shark’s skin picked up vibrations of a strug gling fish. The shark was immediately transformed into a deadly, efficient machine of death. With muscles taut, the shark knifed through the water at a rapid speed. In a flash the shark caught its victim, a large fish, in its powerful jaws. Then, jerking its head back and forth, the shark tore huge chunks of flesh from its victim and swallowed them. Soon the action was over.

Moving to Survive

B) In pursuing its prey, the shark demonstrated in a dramatic way the important role of movement, or locomotion, in animals.Like the shark, most animals use movement to find food. They also use locomotion to escape enemies, find a mate, and explore new territories. The methods of locomotion include crawling, hopping, slithering, flying, swimming, or walking.Humans have

the added advantage of using their various inventions to move about in just about any kind of environment. Automobiles, rockets, and submarines transport humans from deep oceans to as far away as the moon. However, for other animals movement came about naturally through millions of years of evolution. One of the most successful examples of animal locomotion is that of the shark. Its ability to quickly zero in on its prey has always impressed scientists. But it took a detailed study by Duke University marine biologists S. A. Wainwright, F. V osburgh, and J. H. Hebrank to find out how the sharks did it. In their study the scientists observed sharks swimming in a tank at Marine land in Saint Augustine, Fla. Movies were taken of the sharks’ movements and analyzed. Studies were also made of shark skin and muscle.

Skin Is the Key

C) The biologists discovered that the skin of the shark is the key to the animal’s high efficiency in

swimming through the water. The skin contains many fibers that crisscross like the inside of a belted radial tire. The fibers are called collagen fibers. These fibers can either store or release large amounts of energy depending on whether the fibers are relaxed or taut. When the fibers are stretched, energy is stored in them the way energy is stored in the string of a bow when pulled tight. When the energy is released, the fibers become relaxed.

D) The Duke University biologists have found that the greatest stretching occurs where the shark

bends its body while swimming. During the body’s back and forth motion, fibers along the outside part of the bending body stretch greatly. Much potential energy is stored in the fibers.

This energy is released when the shark’s body snaps back the other way.As energy is alternately stored and released on bot h sides of the animal’s body, the tail whips strongly back and forth. This whip-like action propels the animal through the water like a living bullet. Source of Energy

E) What causes the fibers to store so much energy? In finding the answer the Duke University

scientists learned that the shark’s similarity to a belted radial tire doesn’t stop with the skin.

Just as a radial tire is inflated by pressure, so, too, is the area just under the shark’s collagen “radials”. Instead of air pressure, however, the pre ssure in the shark may be due to the force of the blood pressing on the collagen fibers.

F) When the shark swims slowly, the pressure on the fibers is relatively low. The fibers are more

relaxed, and the shark is able to bend its body at sharp angles. The animal swims this way when looking around for food or just swimming. However, when the shark detects an important food source, some fantastic involuntary changes take place. The pressure inside the animal may increase by 10 times. This pressure change greatly stretches the fibers, enabling much energy to be stored. This energy is then transferred to the tail, and the shark is off. The rest of the story is predictable.

Dolphin Has Speed Record

G) Another fast marine animal is the dolphin. This seagoing mammal has been clocked at speeds

of 32 kilometers (20 miles) an hour. Biologists studying the dolphin have discovered that, like the shark, the animal’s efficient locomotion can be traced to its skin. A dolphin’s skin is made up in such a way that it offers very little resistance to the water flowing over it. Normally when a fish or other object moves slowly through the water, the water flows smoothly past the body. This smooth flow is known as laminar flow. However, at faster speeds the water becomes more turbulent along the moving fish. This turbulence muses friction and slows the fish down.

H) In a dolphin the skin is so flexible that it bends and yields to the waviness of the water. The

waves, in effect, become tucked into the skin’s folds. This allows the r est of the water to move smoothly by in a laminar flow. Where other animals would be slowed by turbulent water at rapid speeds, the dolphin can race through the water at record breaking speeds.

Other Animals Less Efficient

I) Not all animals move as efficiently as sharks and dolphins. Perhaps the greatest loser in

locomotion efficiency is the slug. The slug, which looks like a snail without a shell, lays down

a slimy trail over which it crawls. It uses so much energy producing the slimy mucus and

crawling over it that a mouse traveling the same distance uses only one twelfth as much energy.

Scientists say that because of the slug’s inefficient use of energy, its lifestyle must be restricted.

That is, the animals are forced to confine themselves to small areas for obtaining food and finding proper living conditions. Have humans ever been faced with this kind of problem?

注意:此部分试题请在答题卡2上作答。

36. According to the passage, a shark can use movement to find food, to avoid being chased by its

enemies, and to find a new place to live.

37. Examples of automobiles, rockets and submarines are used to show that human inventions

enable us to travel in almost any kind of environment.

38. The skin is the key to the shark’s swift locomotion in water.

39. According to the Duke University scientists, when bending its body in swimming, the shark

stretch its collagen fibers to the greatest extent.

40. Because it is also inflated by pressure, the area just under the shark’s collagen fibers similar to

a belted radial tire.

41. A laminar flow is formed when a fish swims slowly through the water.

42. Consuming the equal amount of energy as a slug does, a mouse can travel 12 times as long as

a slug.

43. A shark finds its prey by feeling the vibrations of a struggling prey.

44. According to the passage, collagen fibers can be compared to the string of a bow for both of

them store energy when stretched.

45. When the shark detects an important food source, some fantastic involuntary changes take

place.

Section C

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and

D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on

Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.

Passage One

Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.

The table before which we sit may be, as the scientist maintains, composed of dancing atoms, but it does not reveal itself to usas anything of the kind, and it is not with dancing atoms but a solid and motionless object that we live. So remote is this “real” table —and most of the other

“realities” with which science deals —that it cannot be discussed in terms which have any human value, and though it may receive our purely intellectual credence it cannot be woven into the pattern of life as it is led, incontradistinction to life as we attempt it. Vibrations in the ether (以太) are so totally unlike the color, purple that the gulf between them cannot be bridged, and they are, to all intents and purposes, not one but two separate things of which the secondand less “real”must be the most significant for us. And just as the sensation which has led us to attribute all objective reality to a non-existent thing which we called “purple”is more important for human life than the conception of vibrations of a certain frequency; so too the belief in God; however ill founded, has been more important in the life of man than the germ theory of true the latter may be.

We may, if we like, speak of consequence, as certain mystics love to do, of the different levels ororders of truth. We may adopt what is essentially a Platonistic (布拉图式的) trick of thought andinsist upon postulating the existence of external realities which correspond to the needs and modesof human feeling and which, so we may insist, have their being in some part of the universeunreachable by science. But to do so is to make an unwarrantable assumption and to be guilty ofthe metaphysical fallacy of failing to distinguish between a truth of feeling and that other sort oftruth which is described as “truth of correspondence” and it is better perhaps, at least for those ofus who have grown up in thought, to steer clear of such confusions and to rest content with theadmission that, though the universe with which science deals is the real universe, yet we do notand cannot have any but fleeting and imperfect contacts with it; that the most important part ofour lives-our sensations, emotions, desires and aspirations-take place in a universe of illusions whichscience can attenuate or destroy, but which it is powerless to enrich.

D) learn to acknowledge both

47. Judging from the ideas and tone of the selection, one may reasonably guess that the author

is____.

A) a humanist B) a pantheist C) a nuclear physicist D) a doctor of medicine

48. According to this passage, a scientist would conceive of a “table” as being ____.

A) a solid motionless object

B) certain characteristic vibrations in “ether”

C) a form fixed in space and time

D) a mass of atoms in motion

49. The topic of this selection is____.

A) the distortion of reality by science

B) the confusion caused by emotions

C) Platonic and contemporary views of truth

D) the place of scientific truth in our lives

50. By “objective reality” (Last line, Para. 1) the author means____.

A) scientific reality C) the viewer’s experience

B) a symbolic existence D) reality colored by emotion

Passage Two

Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.

Psychologists take opposing views of how external rewards, from warm praise to old cash, affect motivation and creativity. Behaviorists, who study the relation between actions and, argue that rewards can improve performance at work and school. Some other researchers who study various aspects of mental life, maintain those rewards often destroy creativity by encouraging dependence on approval and gifts from others.

The latter view has gained many supporters, especially among educators. But the careful use of small monetary rewards sparks in grade-school children suggesting that properly presented inducements indeed aid inventiveness, according to a study inthe June Journal Personality and Social Psychology.

“If they know they’re working for a reward and can focus on a relatively challenging task, they show the most creativity,” says Robert Esenberger of the University of Delaware in Newark. “But it’s easy to kill creativity by giving rewards for poor performance or creating too much anticipation for rewards.”

A teacher who continually draws attention to rewards or who hands out high grades for ordinary achievement ends up with uninspired students, Esenberger holds. As an example of the latter point, he notes growing efforts at major universities to tighten grading standards and restore falling grades.

In earlier grades, the use of so-called token economics, in which students handle challenging problems and receive performance-based points toward valued rewards, shows promise in raising effort and creativity, the Delaware psychologist claims.

stimulate motivation and creativity?

A) Give rewards for performances which deserve them.

B) Always promise rewards.

C) Assign tasks which are not very challenging.

A) rewarding poor performance may kill the creativity of students’

B) punishment is more effective than rewarding

C) failing uninspired students helps improve their overall academic standards

D) discouraging the students anticipation for easy rewards is matter of urgency

55. Which of the following facts about “token economics” is not correct?

You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words. Much controversy has been aroused about whether the students should find a job or start their own business after graduation.Taking a look around,we can find that some graduates bustle around job markets, while others choose to run a shop on TMall. However, I prefer the former choice. From my perspective, there are good reasons to find a job in the first several years after their graduation.First and foremost, if a graduate intends to accumulate working experience and learn from the seniors, it is advisable for him to find a job. It is an undeniable fact that the theoretical knowledge will provide the graduates with the ability to consider things comprehensively, however, only under the integration with practice can the rigid knowledge be useful for their future development. Inevitably, doing something small is the premise of undertaking something great. Take Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba and taobao, for example. He also finds some jobs before establishing his own career, laying a solid foundation for his later success. Consequently,it is of great necessity to find a job after graduation.I firmly believe that it will continue to bring about more returns to our life and future.
