人:

1. A family member made you proud/who has had important influence on you

Let me tell you about my grandma, who plays a very important part in my life. She has always been there for me, when I was a young child, she used to look after me, because my parents both had a job and couldn’t stay at home to look after me. Since I went to university, I don’t get to see her as often as I used to, but I give her a call on a regular basis to check how she is doing.

She is not that tall, but because she always holds herself very straight, she doesn’t look that short. She has many wrinkles on her forehead and around her eyes, but she say it makes her look wiser.

My grandma is a very kind person. She smiles a lot, and she always wants to help everybody. Everyone knows she is extremely considerate and thoughtful. She used to be a teacher, so many people in my hometown knows her.

A lot of her former students visit her whenever they go back home.

I can’t say that her schedule has been busy even though she is already seventy, but she seems to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing life. She cooks pretty much every day, and every morning she gets up early to go grocery shopping and she buys the newspaper on a daily basis. She has a fixed routine[ru:?ti:n] and she stick to it. After lunch she takes a nap and then goes for a walk.

My grandma plays an influential role in my life. I definitely learned a lot from her. She showed me how to be a polite and respectful person. She also encouraged me when I was in middle school and I found school a bit boring. I feel so proud that I have such a kind grandma who always keeps a positive attitude which infects everyone around her.

2. A creative inventor or musician

I want to talk about Yo-Yo Ma who is one of the most renowned cellists [?t?el?st] in the world.

The first time I heard his music is when I watch a Hong Kong movie called Ashes of Time in which Yo-Yo Ma was invited by the director to create music in this film. This movie is enhanced by Yo-Yo’s stunning music. From that time his music interested me a lot and I was intensely curious to know more about him.

When he was at the age of 4, his father gave him lessons on the cello[?t?el??] and he was able to give his performance in public when he was 5. When yoyo was 9 he had the opportunity to study at a famous music school in New York.

Now he’s considered to be one of the greatest cellists in the world. He tours the world playing his cello. Some

critics viewed him as an innovative[??n?ve?t?v] musician because he absorbs anything and everything, not only plays classical music but also combines modern style with traditional ones. He is always looking for new ways to express himself. Every time he performs, people are moved by his music. Sometimes the effect is so powerful that many audience members are moved to tears. I have never been to his concert and I really want to hear his concert in person.

When talking about musical education, he encouraged people to exposed to music environment whenever getting the opportunity. I really agree with that. I think I really need to learn a musical instrument in the future to cultivate my spirit.

3. A politest person you know/An interesting neighbor/ a person who just moved home/A person

you have met before and you want to know more about

I will describe one of my neighbors who is a very polite person, and who is just move to our community.

At first I don’t know about him, before he moved in, I just heard that he is an author. A few days later, the flat was thoroughly cleaned, and the painters and decorators came. Of course they made a lot of noise, but I was glad, for that would be the end of the disorder next door. Before it, the people who lived in that flat were always quarreling.

After finishing the decorations and furnishings, the author moved in. It was a gray-haired man with such a serious demeanor[d?'mi:n?], who had obviously been raised by a good upbringing. The day he moved in,I saw there were many books piled by the door and he stood there carefully dusting them one by one. I did glance at some of the titles; many of them were in French and in English, and in some languages of which I did not know a single word. Besides, he was extremelycivil. From the outset he treated every neighbor respectfully even he did n’t know us; and he was always courteous even to little kids.

I think he is a good guy and I really want to get acquainted with him.I am wondering what the man could be like who had read such a lot of books, who knows so many languages. The idea of so many books aroused a kind of unearthly veneration.I wish I could know him one day.

Unearthly veneration 超自然的崇拜[?n??:θli][?ven?'re??n]

4. A person that made you laugh/An occasion or a person that made you laugh

I am going to describe a character in Friends which is the very popular television sitcom.

I think that all the characters in this sitcom are funny and humorous, and I love all of them. But today the character who I want to talk about is the guy called Joey.

Joey is a struggling actor and food lover. At the same time, he is a simple-minded womanizer['w?m?na?z?(r)] with many short-term girlfriends. Despite his womanizing, Joey is innocent, caring, and well-intentioned. Joey rooms with his best friend Chandler for years, and there are many funny things happen between them.

I remember that there was a talk between them which made me laugh a lot in an episode. When their friend Pheobe is going to have babies and she is considering to name her third kid, she says that she wants a name that sounds strong and confident. Joey and Chandler raced to give advice. At the beginning, both of them think they both have great names and they both recommend their own name to Phoebe. So Phoebe decides to go with either Joey or Chandler. Then they start to belittle each other’s name by words. Chandler says that no one named Joy is a good guy. And Joey fights back and says: ‘ Alright. Look man, I didn’t want to bring this up. But Chandler is the stupidest name I’ve heard in my life! It’s not a name! It’s barely even a word. It’s like chandelier but it’s not! It’s a stupid, stupid, non-name!’It works and Chandler stops talking and think he have a ridiculous name.

Chandler starts to blame his unlucky things on his stupid name. Finally, in order to comfort Chandler, Phoebe decides to name her baby Chandler. When Phoebe goes out, Chandler make a victory posturewhich make Joey realize that he lose in this round.

I am always amused to Joey when I watch Friends,I think he is a real life artist who can make the trivial things colourful in daily life.

5. A person you are interested in/ a famous person who has great influence on you

I would like to talk about a female architect named ZahaHadid.

She is now considered one of the greatest architects because of her profound influence on modern architecture. She was the first woman to receive the ‘Pritzker Architecture Prize, which is the ultimate accolade [??k?le?d] in the architecture field. One of her representative masterpiece in China is the Guangzhou Opera House.

Hadid was born in an upper-class Iraqi family but she grew up in other foreign countries. At first, her major in university is not architecture but mathematics. And then she discovered new interest in architecture for some reason so she started her way to architecture in Britan. The school she entered is called AA school which stands for Architectural Association School.I really want to say that she is a genius. Because AA school is one of the most prestigious [pre?st?d??s] school in the world that many students studying architecture including me are dreaming of.

Students who can enter AA school must be very creative, so did Hadid. As an architect, Hadid was different from others. She doesn’t think that the wall of a building must be vertical and the ground horizontallike most architectures do. The buildings designed by her are not like a cubic block but irregular shape. If you have ever visited the Opera house in Guangzhou you will understand immediately what I mean. Although many people don’t like her style, I very appreciate her works which I think are always dynamic and like an exquisite [?k?skw?z?t]sculpture.

But i t’s a pity that she pass ed away around one year ago. She was only 66 and it is at a golden age for an architect. I admire her not just because of her talent but also her courage to innovate [??n?ve?t]. I learned a lot of designing methods from her works and the innovative[??n?ve?t?v] spirit from her quality, which benefits me a lot in my work. Actually she is much more than a great architect. She is one of the greatest cultural heroines of modern time s.

6. a famous person in your country

I want to talk about Tang Wei, one of the most famous actresses in China.

The first time I saw her in the screen is in the movie called Lust Caution [?k?:?n]. She is the heroin in this movie. I was attracted by her special temperament [?tempr?m?nt] at my first glance. I couldn’t describe what the quality is, but it just grabbed my attention. This movie, maybe includes some sex scene, was banned, and Tang was forbidden to act in the movie by the TV Bureau[?bj??r??] in China.

Many people thought this was the end of her acting career, but they were wrong. She went to the Britain with all her money gained from her first movie. She entered a local language school and started learning English. During the time she studied in language school, she made money by busking street art and being a trainer in a badminton clubfor her daily expenses. After a month she was able to achieve self-sufficiency while at the beginning she lived on her saving when she just arrived at London. Because of her experience of being an actress and her special oriental style, she got a modeling job which made her famous and no need to worry about earning a living. Just when she was planning her future life with great enthusiasm[?n?θju:zi?z?m], she received a

telephone call from Hong Kong and they invited Tang to play the lead character in a film. So she is back toChina and restarted her acting career. Now she has played many movies and gained recognition. [?rek?g?n??n]

I admire Tang not just because of her beautiful appearance but also her courage to restart everything at every time. As she said ‘we can’t change the environment but to adapt it.’

7. A teacher you have had

Let me tell you about my history teacher in middle school. His name is mister Wu and he was by far the most influential teacher I have ever had. Mister Wu was a passionate and fascinating teacher. His classes were always lively and never boring. He knew how to get our attention and he had a talent for telling stories and anecdotes about historical events.

In China, most of the time teachers ask us to listen and recite. His methods were a little different. He often asked us for our point of view and he tried to make us think by ourselves. In addition, Mister Wu was always well-prepared for his class. He was responsible and very knowledgeable. I mean when you teach history, you must remember a lot of dates and explain to students the influence of important events on our history.

Mister Wu’s witty personality captivated every one of my classmates. Although he was very serious in class, he likes make jokes all the time so he can integrate himself with the students. We liked him very much and were always willing to share our true feelings with him because we trusted him. He always told us that everything in life was difficult but there is no reason to give up. He said that our effort would be rewarded and that life was all about patience and enthusiasm. I try to remember his speech whenever I feel tired of my studies. He taught me how to remain positive and optimistic.

8.Two friends from a same family

I am going to describe the twins in my class when I was in primary school.

They are two brothers and they have the similar names which are only one word difference. Both of them were short and slim, with permanent tan. Although they are twins, it is very easy to distinguish those two brothers because they have different facial features which one bears no resemblance [r??zembl?ns] to the other one.

They were classmates in my class and one of them – the little brother – was sitting in front of me. I always talked with him and asked him the feeling of having a brother because I never experienced it. He told me that they always fight with each other at home but the next day they make up with each other. As an only child, I envy them so much for they can keep each other’s company so they will never feel lonely.

When I grow up, I still keep in touch with the twins. They went to the different universities in different cities. Now they work far away and lead their own life. They have little chance to get together like they were in childhood. But I know they support each other in their own way at every stage of life. Time and distance cannot separate the people who share the same blood.

A Gift That You Received I want to talk about a gift I received on Christmas Day when we were exchanging gifts. One of my friends gave me a ceramic young Buddhist monk. I was a little bit surprised to have it because it’s very unlike him. And then he told me the story behind it. He said for this gist he went to a pottery shop which offers a service through which you can make something on your own and take it home at the end of the session. And he made a Buddhist monk for me. The Buddha is beige in color, and about 10 centimeters in height. I can’t say it’s very delicately molded because it’s probably my friend’s third try. I was impressed by the facial expression of the monk. I mean, his eyes are half closed, and there is just an air of calmness which is really contagious. I place this Buddha on my desk, and whenever my work’s not going well or my computer runs very slowly, I would feel a bit anxious, and lose my patience in such situations. Then I look at the ceramic monk and mysteriously I regain my composure. So I like this gift from my friend and I am really grateful for his work.

Though I have many friends, my friendship with them grew up with times and mutual understanding. But I can recall that my friendship with George grew up almost all of a sudden. George is senior to me by 2-3 years and I did not meet him until I was in the 4th semester in my University. One of my term final exam's schedules was changed and I did not know that. According to my previous exam schedule I reached my University and was totally confused what to do when I heard that the exam was already over. I went to our Departmental head's office and he could not find a way around of it. He blamed me that I should have been more careful about the changes. I explained him that I was sick and did not come to university for 3-4 days and that made me unaware of the exam schedule changes. Then I found that someone who was sitting next to me in the departmental head's office asked me to meet the course teacher and explain the situation. He then escorted me to our course teacher's room and talked to the teacher. It seemed to me that George was already personally known to our teacher and they had an intimate relationship. Hearing everything the teacher agreed to arrange an exam for me next day in his office room. My friendship with George grew up after that event and albeit our age differences we found that we had many common interests and habits. We started spending time and I visited his home many times. We worked in a retail shop for about 6 months and that helped us become more intimate.

多米诺骨牌效应:=Something you learned from math=Something you learned from your family=A piece of advice=A change you had=An important stage in your life=A text message you got=A letter you got=An E-mail you got=A way of communication=An important decision you made=A person who helped you=A kind thing someone did to you=A family member you love talking to=A good parent=An elderly family member=A neighbor=A good friend=A teacher=A science course you took=A subject you love/d at school=Your personality=First day of college=Your experience of getting money as a gift=Your experience of getting congratulations=A person you helped=A thing your friend did made you admire.

It's located in the city center of Guangzhou and its not far away from Zhongshan 6 Road, near the People's Hospital. It's a good place to go to and climb to see the Flower Pagoda, which has eight sides to it. You can also go there to pray if you are a Buddhist. It is an active temple and is also the head of the Guangzhou Buddhist Association. You can also do a bit of shopping there if you like. Besides the souvenirs you can buy there, it also has a very lively fruit and meat market nearby, so if you just want to shop instead you can. The main feature of this place is the pagoda because it's the tallest in the city. From the outside it looks like it has only nine stories, but actually it has 17 inside. It's quite old, and was built some time in the 10th century. The temple itself is even older than that-I think it goes back to some time

The subject that I'd like to describe is Physics that was taught in our school. We had this subject in each year of our high school and each year a new teacher used to taught us the subject. Even we had to read physics in college as Science was my major. I remember Mr. Alex, Burter, John, David and Mrs. Jeniffer took Physics in different years. We were lucky to have good Physics teachers who could make the subject interesting and enjoyable. Our teachers used to tell us stories first and then would explain the theory, experiment or math of the text books. They would then relate the story with the study. Later they would explain us the real examples and facts. Sometimes they used to take us to the Physics labs and explain how something works. I have learned numerous things of physics from simple definition of mass to the complex explanation of Einstein's Theory of Relativity. My foundation of physics grew up and expanded with the help of those teachers. The subject itself is utterly interesting if one can have passion for it. It is one such subject that one would start loving it if s/he starts understanding the underlying concepts of it. Physics is all around us and the lesson I learned from my School had helped me greatly throughout my higher academic years. Tips for answering this cue card topic: You should pick a real academic subject like Math, English, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, and Biology to answer this cue card. Then quickly take some notes including the following: 1. In which class was it taught? 2. Do not pick a subject taught in your college or university level as the cue card is asking you to talk about a subject taught in your school. 3. Try to remember a teacher's name. You can mention multiple teachers' name as the same subject in school is taught by different teachers in different classes. 4. Give a short detail what the subject. People Cards: It’s actu ally quite hard for me to choose just one member of my family as I feel close to all o them, but I get on very well with my younger sister, Sara, so I’ll talk about her. Um… she’s 18 months younger than I am, but we are very similar in personality. We’re both outgoing and … quite noisy. And we enjoy the same things … um… the same books … er … the same music, even the same friends. Um… on the other hand, we’re totally different in looks. She’s much taller than I am , even though she’s younger. Er… another th ing is that I have dark hair while she has fair hair. I also have slightly darker skin that hers. Um… with her fair skin, she has freckles, which I don’t, of course. I suppose the reason that we’re close is because we share the same character and interests. In my opinion, that’s why it is important in a relationship – to have things like that in common. And I think we’re close because we’re nearly the same age as each other and we grew up doing things together.
