Multi-millionaire gave away his entire fortune to help others but his wife left him
He is not the first multimillionaire to quit the world of commerce and vow to give his entire fortune to charity. But few can have put their money where their mouth is with such conviction as Brian Burnie.
Once the owner of a ￡16million mansion, the
70-year-old now lives off his pension in a small flat and drives a battered Ford Fiesta.
The former recruitment firm boss pledged to dedicate his life to helping women with breast cancer after his wife was diagnosed with the disease.
But it emerged yesterday that the couple divorced after Shirley, his wife of almost 30 years, grew fed up with his addiction to parting with everything the family had worked for.
?I didn‘t intend to have to beat cancer and then spend the rest of my life living in a house like this and doing everything for everyone else,‘ said Mrs Burnie, 66, who made a full re covery. ?I‘m sick of bloody charity and the hard work –we all are. I didn‘t want to give everything away. We needed a home and an income and we have three children. I wanted security for us and our family.‘Born in a Newcastle bedsit, Mr Burnie grew up in a home without an indoor toilet and began working life as a grocery delivery boy aged 15.
After building successful businesses in construction and recruitment, he turned his ten-acre Northumberland estate into a ￡16million luxury hotel and spa.
But follow ing his wife‘s diagnosis a decade ago, Mr Burnie began to focus on charity. It was not a total surprise – at their wedding in 1981, he insisted they ask for donations to charity instead of presents.
In 2009, he sold the hotel and used all the proceeds to fund a fleet of cars ferrying rural patients to hospital –as part of his charity, Daft As A Brush.

But there were signs his outwardly loyal wife was unhappy with the drastic change in lifestyle when he was persuaded to move them to a pretty stone house backing on to farmland.
Mrs Burnie hoped her husband‘s retirement would allow them to spend more time together, but she said the ?madness‘ of devoting his life to helping others meant he was working 12 hours a day and barely seeing his family.
?It took over his life, becoming more important than anything else to him,‘ she added yesterday.
?I said to him often that we had other things to consider, but his top three priorities were the charity, the charity and the charity.‘ In 2011, she learned from someon e at a hairdresser‘s that her husband had bought a home in Gosforth, Newcastle, without telling her.
?I felt he‘d made his preparations for the end of the marriage and waited for me to find out,‘ she said. Shortly afterwards, according to Mrs Burnie, he told her the marriage was over, moving into a flat above the charity‘s offices. The couple divorced in 2012.
But Mr Burnie denies he wanted to end the relationship and maintains there was nothing sinister about the house purchase, saying: ?I never intended t o live in it. I bought it for the charity.‘ He still sees his grown-up children regularly, but they will not get a penny from him.
?I had enough money to set them up for life, but I think that would be wrong,‘ he said. ?Your children have to make their own way.
Mr Burnie features in Channel 4‘s documentary Jon Richardson Grows Up, tonight at 10.35pm. There is no mention of the couple‘s split, though it does show him living alone in his flat.
Asked if he kept anything for himself he replies:

Why Wales (probably) won't demand its own referendum on independence
AFTER months in which it looked all but certain that 据《经济学人》报道，几个月前，苏格兰会
Scotland would vote ―No‖ to independence, there is now real concern in London at the possibility of Scotland opting for a divorce this Thursday. Polls suggest a closer race than many had predicted, with the ―Yes‖ campaign for Scottish independence even nudging ahead of the lacklustre ―No‖ campaign in some surveys over the past two weeks. But if Scotland does leave the United Kingdom, what of Wales? Would a Scottish ―Yes‖ vote prompt calls from the Welsh t o hold their own referendum on independence, precipitating the exit of Wales from the Union too?
In fact, although Wales is in a similar position to Scotland, both in terms of history and its present constitutional arrangements, if the polls are to be believed there is almost no appetite for independence in Wales. A YouGov poll in April asked Welsh voters: ―Should Wales be an independent country?‖, and the answer was a resounding No. Only 12% answered positively, with 74% against (and 13% don‘t knows). Curiously, the same poll showed that more Welsh supported independence for Scotland than for their own country. Furthermore, that 12% figure is probably on the high side, as several other surveys have shown support for Welsh independence at more like 5%. Not even all supporters of Plaid Cymru, the Welsh nationalist party, are in favour of independence. If Scotland votes "No" on September 18th it will certainly get more powers devolved from Westminster to Edinburgh anyway, and the same is bound to happen to Wales. But that is not expected to shift the basic Welsh objection to independence much.
There are several reasons for this lack of enthusiasm. Some worry about Wales's viability as an independent nation. Wales is smaller, with a population of just over 3m, co mpared with Scotland‘s 5.3m, and nor does it have such an obvious source of income (and power) as Scotland does with its North Sea oil. The amount of oil and gas left in the North Sea for an independent Scotland to exploit is hotly disputed, but it nonetheless adds weight to the argument of the ―Yes‖ campaign that Scotland can go it alone financially. Wales used to be a great coal-producing country, but most of that industry is long gone. These might be termed negative

But the Welsh also have more positive reasons to stay in the Union than do the Scots, principally because they seem to be more comfortable with their dual identity as Welsh and British. The Welsh enjoy a high degree of devolved government and combine this with a strong sense of cultural autonomy. Thus Wales is officially a bilingual country (all the road signs, for instance, are in Welsh and English), and it is estimated that about 20% of the population speak Welsh. Wales has distinct cultural and sporting festival s, and a distinct national sport—rugby football.
Yet despite this firm Welsh identity, Wales is closely linked to England both economically and politically—more so than Scotland. Telephone records reveal that whereas the Scots mainly talk to each other, the Welsh are mainly chatting to the English and others outside Wales. Furthermore, the Welsh are proud of the contribution that their own politicians have made to building modern Britain. David Lloyd George was British prime minister during the latter half of the first world war, and Aneurin Bevan, from Monmouthshire, founded the National Health Service in the Labour government immediately after the second world war. Conversely, the Welsh have been more accepting of English politicians occupying Welsh seats; Labour Party leader Michael Foot sat in Bevan‘s old seat at Ebbw Vale for decades. It is only in more recent years, since the 1990s, that Scotland has consistently produced politicians that rose to the top of Westminster politics (such as Gordon Brown, prime minister in 2007-10). As a tennis player representing China on the global stage, I‘ve trekked around the world playing hundreds of matches on the WTA tour, for China‘s Fed Cup team, at the National Games and at several Olympic Games. You‘ve always been there for me, supporting me, cheering me on, and encouraging me to reach my potential。

Most people in the tennis world know that my career has been marked by my troubled right knee. The black brace I wear over it when I step on the court has become my tennis birth mark. And while the brace completes my tennis look, the knee problems have at times overtaken my life。

After a few weeks of post-surgery recovery, I tried to go through all the necessary steps to get back on the court。
While I‘ve come back from surgery in the past, this time it felt different. One of my goals was to recover as fast as I could in order to be ready for the first WTA tournament in my hometown of Wuhan. As hard as I tried to get back to being 100%，my body kept telling me that, at 32, I will not be able to compete at the top level ever again. The sport is just too competitive, too good, to not be 100%。

Obama turned away by exclusive New York golf clubs on Labor Day weekend
Several exclusive golf clubs in New York wouldn't let President Barack Obama play on their courses on Labor Day weekend, it emerged on Wednesday.
The Trump National Golf Club, the Winged Foot Golf Club and the Willow Ridge Country Club all turned down Obama, NBC 4 New York reports.
The news station says the president's advance team gave courses only a day or two of notice that Obama would be in the area, and clubs may have rejected the White House's request to protect their wealthy members from being inconvenienced during the holiday weekend. Membership dues at the swanky golf clubs run upward of $100,000 a year.
NBC 4 says it learned of the president's golf plans from sources who were informed of the calls made by Obama's advance staff.
The news station says it reached out to the clubs that were approached, but they declined to comment.
The president was in New York on the weekend in question, and he was scheduled to overnight in West Chester Country on Friday after headlining a fundraisers in Rhode Island and New York earlier that day.
The following evening Obama was to attend the nearby wedding of White House chef Sam Kass and MSNBC host Alex Wagner at Blue Hill Farm in Pocantico Hills.
Obama had no other public events on his schedule Saturday.
The day before the trip, Obama's chief spokesman said the president wouldn't be staying the night in New York after all and would instead return to the White House on Friday after his speaking engagements. Obama had planned to overnight in New York that Friday after headlining fundraisers so that 有消息人士透露称，上个周末奥巴马曾试图前往纽约三家会员专享的俱乐部打高尔夫球，不料却均被婉拒、连吃闭门羹。

The Duchess has reportedly told friends she would like ―at least‖ three children to give Prince George and her second baby the chance of having the sort of family environment she had.
The Duchess is just 20 months older than her sister Pippa and less than five years older than her brother James. They remain incredibly close and rarely go more than a month without meeting up at the family home in Bucklebury, Berks.
Prince George‘s brother or sister is likely to be born in April or May, meaning there will be almost exactly the same age gap as there is between the Duchess and Pippa Middleton. The Prince of Wales said today he was
―thrilled‖ at the news that he is to be a grandfather again, as he spoke for the first time about the Duchess‘s pregnancy.
Visiting a Prince‘s Trust project in south London, he was congratulated by Toying Owoseje, 26, who shook his hand after he was introduced to her sister Damilola, a young entrepreneur.
The Prince smiled and said: ―What did I do? It‘s not here yet! No, it‘s wonderful, we are very happy. It‘s splendid, very exciting.‖
