What Is Giobalization ?

It was the anti—globalization movement that really put globalization on the map.As a word it has existed since the 1 960s,but the protests against this allegedly new process, which its opponents condemn as a way of ordering people?S lives, brought globalization out of the financial and academic worlds and into everyday current affairs.()

In the late 1 980s and early 1 990s.the business model called the“globalized”financial market came to be seen as an entity that could have more than just an economic impact on the parts of the world it touched.Globalization came to be seen as more than simply a way of doing business,or running financial

markets—it became a process. From then on the word took on a life of its own.

So how does the globalized market work? It is modern communications that make it possible;for the British service sector to deal with its customers through a call centre in India,or for a sportswear(运动服)manufacturer to design its products in Europe, make them in south.east Asia and sell them in north America.() But this is where the anti—globalization side gets stuck in(关注).If these practices replace domestic economic life with an economy that is heavily influenced or controlled from overseas.then the creation of a globalized economic model and the process of globalization can also be seen as a surrender of power to the corporations,or a means of keeping poorer nations in their place。

Not everyone agrees that globalization is necessarily evil,or that globalized

corporations are running the lives of individuals or are more powerful than nations. Some say that the spread of globalization, free markets and free trade into the developing world is the best way to beat poverty—the only problem is that free markets and free trade do not yet truly exist.

Globalization can be seen as a positive, negative or even marginal process. And regardless of whether it works for good or ill, globalization?S exact meaning will continue to be the subject of debate among those who oppose, support or simply observe it。

A New Citizenship Test

1 Last week a sample of the new US citizenship(公民身份)exam was released by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services(US—CLS ).It will be tried out in 1 0 cities early next year to replace the current test in 2008.Instead of asking how many stripes the USflag has,as the current test does, the new one asks why there are 13 stripes。Instead ofhaving to name the branches of government,an applicant is asked to explain why thereare three.

2 “T he goal is to make it more meaningful.”explains Emilio Gonzalez, director of theUS—CIS。Immigrants who pass it are expected to have a better“understanding and respect”for US civic(公民的)values,Gonzalez says.

3 The US isn?t the only country dealing with citizenship tests that aim to get a“ sharedcommitment”from immigrants for their adopted country?s“values”,In recent years,Inaddition to the usual requirement of language/work skills and economic status-severalEuropean countries have adopted citizenship tests.Britain introduced a new citizenshiptest last November. In March,a new Dutch law took effect requiring all

would—beimmigrants to take a citizenship test.It involved watching a video showing nude(裸体的)women bathing at beaches and gay(同性恋的)men kissing in public.Th e aim was toensure that“newcomers will be comfortable with the country?S liberal social mores(风俗)”.

4 Europe has been known for welcoming immigrants for decades. But,today, the fact is that some immigrants are kept apart from local citizens by culture and they becomehostile to each other.Promoting integration has become a major concern for Europeancountries.after the rioting in Muslim ghettoes(少数民族聚居区)in France and the killingof Dutch public figures by religious extremists.

5 Officials believe that a person?s attachment to a country can be tested by his or herknowledge of the country. However, some critics say that the changes can do little to helppeople?assimilate(同化)themselves.“Immigration is a culture war today-Is giving a newtest the right way to lessen the accusations in that fight?”says Ali Noorani ,of theMassachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition(难民辩护联盟)

第4部分:阅读理解(第31~45题,每题3分,共45分)

下面有3篇短文,每篇短文后有5道题。请根据短文内容,为每题确定1个最佳选项。

第一篇Centers of the Great European Cities

The centers of the great cities of Europe are meeting places by tradition-People gather there to drink coffee and chat late into the night.A mixture of locals and tourists make for an exciting, metropolitan atmosphere.Squares, plazas(广场)and arcades(拱廊)form the heart of Europe?s cities.

V enice in Italy has the Piazza San Marco—a beautiful square surrounded by shops, churches, restaurants and caf6s.In Barcelona,Spain,LaBosqueria is a lively market with hundreds of stalls selling all kinds of goods.London?s Covent Garden is filled with fruit and vegetable stalls by day and musicians, acrobats(杂技演员)and artists by night. The government buildings at the center of many cities often are architecturally impressive. In London, they serve as a beautiful backdrop(背景)to the coffee tables that line the streets and the banks of the Thames.

These vibrant(有活力的)hearts are the product of centuries of evolution, social historian Joel Garreau told US News and World Report recently.“The reason people think Venice is so great today is you don?t see all the mistakes,”said Garreau-“ Those have all been removed.”Most European cities were laid out before the invention of the car, so bars.restaurants and cafes were near to,people?s homes.Today, the focus of many Europeans?li fe has moved away from the centers. They live in the suburbs and outskirts, driving to supermarkets to get their supplies. But on a continent where people treasure convention, there are still those who hold onto traditional ways, living and shopping locally. These people.together with tourists, provide the city centers with the reason for existence.

Coffee culture plays a part in keeping these city centers flourishing .this is Particularly true of Paris whose citizens are famous enthusiastic conversationalists this skill is developed over many hours spent chatting over espressos(浓咖啡)and cigarettes.

Religion also plays a role in developing sociable atmosphere.People In Roman Catholic countries used to visit the Church on an almost daily basis.Entire communities would gather in the same building and then move out to the markets.cafes and bars In the surrounding streets. An enormous example of this relationship between church and society is the Duomo。The huge marble cathedral in Florence,Italy IS surrounded by bakeries and coffee shops, and caters not only to the tourist crowds, but also the local community.

第二篇Doubtful Ways to Reduce and Increase Your Weight

You hear this:“No wonder you are fat.All you ever do is eat.”You feel sad:t “I skip my breakfast and supper.I run every morning and evening. What else can I do?”Basically you can do nothing。Your genes, not your life habits, determine your weight and your body constantly tries to maintain it.

Albert Stunkard of the University of Pennsylvania found from experiments that,“80 percent of the children of two obese(肥胖的)parents become obese,as compared with no more than 14 percent of the offspring of two parents of normal weight.”

How can obese people become normal or even thin through dieting? Well, dieting can be effective, but the health costs are tremendous.Jules Hirsch,a research physician at Rockefeller University, did a study of eight fat people。They were given a liquid formula providing 600 calories a day. After more than 1 0 weeks, the subjects lost 45ka on average. But after leaving the hospital, they all regained weight. The results were surprising:by metabolic(新陈代谢的)measurement, fat people who lost large amounts of weight seemed like they were starving. They had psychiatric problems. They dreamed of food or breaking their diet. They were anxious and depressed;some were suicidal. They hid food in their rooms.Researchers warn that it is possible that weight

reduction doesn'tresult In normal weight, but in an abnormal state resembling that of starved non—obese people.Thin people, however, suffer from the opposjte :They have to make a great effort to gain weight.Ethan Sims,of the University of Vermont, got prisoners to volunteer to gain weight? In four to six months, they ate as much as they could. They succeeded in increasing their weight by 20 to 25 percent。But months after the study ended.they were back to normal weight and stayed there.

This does not mean that people are completely without hope in controlling their weight. It means that those who tend to be fat will have to constantly baffle their genetic inheritance if they want to significantly lower their weight。the findings also provide evidence for something scientists thought was true—each person has a comfortable weight range. The range might be as much as 9kg.Someone might weigh 60_69kg without too much effort. But going above or below the natural weight range is difficult. The body resists by feeling hungry or full and changing the metabolism to push the weight back to the range it seeks.

36. What determines your weight?

A.Your working manner B.Your eating habit。

C.Your life style.D.Your genes.

37. What did Jules Hirsch do to the eight fat people in his study?

A.He let them skip supper

B.He let them skip breakfast.

C.He let them run every morning and evening.

D.He gave them a liquid formula providing 600 calories a day.

38 .What happened to the eight fat people after they left the hospital?

A.They went mad.B.They killed themselves.

C.They were back to normal weight.D.They attempted suicide.

39. Ethan Sims made his subjects

A.battle their genetic inheritance B.increase their weight.

C.suffer from hunger D.lower their weight.

40. What did scientists think was true?

A.Each person has a fixed weight range.B.Each person has a weight range of 9kg.

C.Each person wants to control his or her weight.D.Each person wants to eat to his or he r heart?s content

第三篇Shaming Punishments

Last month,James Connolly,a junior at the University of Massachusetts, stood in front of a local police station wearing a toga(长袍)as punishment.

His crime? He was charged with underage drinking, illegal possession of alcohol and excessive noise while holding a party.

This shaming punishment has increased in the US in recent years, mostly imposed by local judges for less—serious crimes, such as drunk driving and theft.

They believe shame is the best petty crime deterrent(威慑).For example,in Tennessee,Judge James McKenzie has made shoplifters(商店货物扒手)stand outside Wal — Mart with signs that read,“I am a thief put here by order of Judge McKenzie”,“Alternative punishments like community service and fines don?t convey moral condemnation(谴责)of the criminal,”said Dan Kahan ,a University of Chicago Law School professor ,in an article published on the university?S website.“They aren?t shameful enough。”

Shaming punishments are sometimes called Scarlet(红色的)Letter punishments. The name comes from US author Nathaniel Hawthorne?S 1850 novel The Scarlet Letter. In this novel,a woman is forced to wear a scarlet “A”on her clothes as punishment forher adultery(通奸).

However, University of Iowa law professor Andrew Hosmanek said there is an important difference between the shaming punishments of colonial America and those assigned in states like Tennessee.

“Early societies often had are—acceptance? ceremony to welcome the offender back into main society,”says Hosmanek.“Contemporary punishments in America lack this.”

Supporters of shaming punishment argue that public shaming is a good way of expressing community values。Some judges say shamed offenders seldom repeat their crimes.

Others aren?t SO sure。“There is little evidence to suggest that shaming punishments are successful in preventing people from committing specific crimes. And a shamed criminal may face a hard battle to regain credibility in society,”said Hosmanek.“So,a shaming punishment may force the offender into more crimes to support himself.”

Experts also debate shaming punishment?S damage to human dignity.“Since the point is to shame,it's of course degrading(侮辱人格的),”said Linda Malone, director of the Human Rights and National Security Law Programme at William and Mary Law School.

“US law only prohibits punishment that is…cruel and unusual?一not…inhuman and degrading?.it's very difficult for a thief to prove that holding a sign in front of Wal-Mart is …cruel and unusual?.”

A. illegally possessing alcoh01

B. smuggling drugs

C. drinking at an illegal age

D. making too much noise at a party

42. Which of the following punishments does NOT morally condemn a criminal?

A.Holding a sign that announces his or her crime

B.Publishing his or her name on a website

C.Apologizing for the crime in front of Wal—Mart

D.Having to do useful work to help others without being paid

43. In the novel The Scarlet Letter, a woman is accused of

What’s Lacking in ‘Sicko’?

When it comes to economic decisions, there are always trade.offs(取舍).Gain one thing and you lose something else._________(46)

The central argument of Michael Moore?s movie“Sicko”一that the cure to the nation?s health care problems is a single—payer system—is hardly novel and is certainly worth consideration, whether or not you agree with it.But in comparing the American system with single—payer plans of other countries—Britain,France,Canada and Cuba—Mr.Moore left out the trade?offs, characterizing those countries as health care paradises._________(47)

Kurt Loder, the film critic who is best known as the anchor(主持人)of“MTV News,” wrote a critique(批评)of the film for MTV?s website.“Sicko” he said。“does a real service”in portraying(描绘)victims of American insurance companies—like the people who died because their only treatment、options were considered“experimental”and t herefore not covered._________ (48)

When “governments attempt to regulate the—balance between a limited supply of health care and an

unlimited demand for it,they?re inevitably forced to ration treatment,Mr.Loder asserted._________ (49)Mr.Loder cited the short film“Dead Meat,”which presents anecdotes(轶事)of failure in the Canadian single—payer system. In its one—sidedness,“Dead Meat”might have made for a nice double feature with“Sicko.”and left movie—goers with a more complete understanding of the complications of deciding on a health care system。_________ (50)

This all makes an otherwise “emotionally compelling film not necessarily an intellectually satisfying one;”wrote Darren Barefoot,a Canadian blogger(博客作者).

A Mr.Moore also decided to ignore problems in other countries, like France?s high taxes and Britain?S cash—short hospitals.

B But the film as a whole,he concluded,is “breathtakingly meretricious(似是而非的),”in large part because of its characterizations of other countries? health care systems.

C The problems have been noticed—and criticism is coming not just from Mr-Moore?s detractors(诋毁者).

D He ticked off a number of negative statistics to counter the positive ones offeredby Mr.Moore.

E Health care is the prevention, treatment, and management of illness.

F This is particularly true in health care,a market in which scarce(稀罕的)goods are ridiculously expensive, but needed by everybody.

Keep on Fighting

Turning once again to the question of invasion,I would observe that there has never been a period in all these long centuries of which we boast when an absolute guarantee against invasion, still less against serious raids, could have been given to our people. In the days of Napoleon the same wind which would have carried his transports across the Channel might have driven away the blockading (封锁)fleet. There was always the chance, and it is that chance which has excited and befooled (愚弄)the imaginations of many continental tyrants. Many are the tales that are told. We are assured that novel methods will be adopted, and when we see the originality of malice (怨恨),the ingenuity of aggression, which our enemy displays,we may certainly

prepare ourselves for every kind of novel stratagem (战略)and every kind of brutal and treacherous (奸诈)maneuver (花招)。I think that no idea is so outlandish (古怪的)that it should not be considered and viewed with a searching, but at the same time,I hope, with a steady eye.

We must never forget the solid assurances of sea power and those which belong to air power if it can be locally exercised. I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty,if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made,as they are being made,we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our island home,to ride out the storm of war,and to outlive the menace (威胁)of tyranny,if necessary for years,if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. This is the resolve of His Majesty's government - every man of them. This is the will of parliament and the nation. The British Empire and the French republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous states have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious (可憎的)apparatus of Nazi rule,we shall not flag (变弱)or fail.

We shall go on to the end,we shall fight in France,we shall fight on the seas and oceans,we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air,we shall defend our island, whatever the cost might be,we shall fight on the beaches,we shall fight on the landing grounds,we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,we shall fight in the hills,we shall never surrender, and even if,which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated (征服)and starving, then our empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British fleet, would carry on the struggle, until,in God's good time, the new world, with its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

McGrady's Spectacular Art

1 When Tracy McGrady is healthy, his play can be so beautiful that even his own teammates on the court cannot help but admire it - in the middle of a game

2 “It's hard for me,because I'm a fan of basketball,”Houston point guard (负责组织进攻的后卫)Rafer Alston told The Houston Chronicle (记事)newspaper after McGrady's 44-point performance against Utah on January 5. “When he's shooting the ball like that,a lot of times I'm standing there watching and,all of a sudden, the other team's getting the ball and going on a fast break (快攻),and I'm getting yelled at by the coach.”Indeed,McGrady's body control, his energy, his shooting - watching these is like watching an artist at work, blending colors, constructing sentences,or playing music.

3 Unfortunately,McGrady,27,hasn't always been on the job. Already this season,he's missed seven games with back spasms (痉挛)After Yao Ming was injured on Dec. 23,it appeared Houston would be without both of its stars. McGrady, however, returned three days later and has been playing well ever since, scoring more than 30 points in each of the last six games,as of Tuesday. Houston can't seem to get on without him. When McGrady was injured, the Rockets won two and lost five

4 “Listen, there are only four or five people on the entire planet that can do the things he can do with the basketball,”forward Shane Battier said of McGrady. “From a fan's perspective - and we're fans even though we're players - it's really fun to watch him do that. From a player's perspective, his game (风格)can affect the entire team. No question We see him,and we get excited, and that pumps us up. He keeps making shots, and suddenly it seems to become easier for everybody.”

5 But it won't,really. Houston has just begun a tough time. Four of the next seven games will be played away from Houston. Six of the games will be against teams with winning records. Opponents will double-team (双人看守)McGrady in an attempt to dull the impact of his art. Instead of watching,McGrady's teammates will need to create a little art of their own.

第一篇Youth Emancipation in Spain

The Spanish Government is so worried about the number of young adults still living with their parents that it has decided to help them leave the nest.

Around 55 percent of people aged 18-34 in Spain still sleep in their parents' homes, says the latest report from the country's state-run Institute of Youth.

To coax (劝诱)young people from their homes, the Institute started a “Youth Emancipation (解放)”program this month. The program offers guidance in finding rooms and jobs.

Economists blame young people's family dependence on the precarious (不稳定的)labor market and increasing housing prices. Housing prices have risen 17 percent a year since 2000.

Cultural reasons also contribute to the problem, say sociologists (社会学家)。Family ties in south Europe - Italy,Portugal and Greece - are stronger than those in middle and north Europe, said Spanish sociologist Almudena Moreno Minguez in her report “The Late Emancipation of Spanish Youth:Key for Understanding”。

“In general, young people in Spain firmly believe in the family as the main body around which their private life is organized”said Minguez.

In Spain - especially in the countryside,it is not uncommon to find entire groups of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews (外甥/侄子)all living on the same street. They regularly get together for Sunday dinner.

Parents' tolerance is another factor. Spanish parents accept late-night partying and are wary of setting bedtime rules.

“A child can arrive home at whatever time he wants. If parents complain he'll put up a fight and call the father a fascist,”said Jose Antonio Gomez Yanez,a sociologist at Carlos I11 University in Madrid.

Mothers' willingness to do children's household chores (家务)worsens the problem. Dionisio Masso,a 60-year-old in Madrid, has three children in their 20s. The eldest,28,has a girlfriend and a job. But life with mum is good.

“His mum does the wash and cooks for him;in the end,he lives well,”Masso said.

第二篇Road Trip Vacations

It's summer. In the United States,it's the season of swimming pools, barbeques (户外烤肉),camping and road trips.

Road trip vacations where the car journey is part of the fun are especially popular with college students, who like to explore the country on wheels. These budget trips are ideal for students who often have plenty of free time but little money.

“Ever since I went to college,I've been traveling around a lot, exploring the country,”said Austin Hawkins,a 19-year-old college student f人事考试教育网rom New York. This summer,Hawkins and his friends have spent weekends traveling in New England.

The best part about car trips, said Hawkins,is that you can be spontaneous. “On a road trip,if you get interested in things you see along the way you can stop and explore.”

Matt Roberts,a 20-year-old student from Ohio who drove to Montreal,Canada, agrees. “With road trips you don't have to plan in advance, you can just get into a car and drive.”

Even with high gas prices, driving with friends is cheaper than flying. Roberts paid about 40 dollars for gas,but a round trip plane ticket would have cost nearly 400 dollars.

Driving trips first became popular in the 1920s. Newly paved roads and improved cars made it possible to

travel longer distances. Motels (汽车旅馆)started appearing outside cities.

By the 1950s,car ownership became the norm. Construction of the US interstate (洲际的)highway system began in 1956 and motel and restaurant chains popped up (突然出现)everywhere making long distance trips easier.

Today, the US has the highest car ownership rate in the world. Only 8 percent of American homes have no car, according to the most recent US census.

Though many college students don't own a car, most have access to one. On many of Hawkins' trips, they used a borrowed van.

Hawkins' most memorable road trip took place over spring break. He and two friends drove from New York to New Orleans to volunteer, helping rebuild the city after Hurricane (风暴)Katrina hit it last July. They crossed the country in two days and slept in their car in church parking lots.

Roberts' road trip to Canada last winter was even more eventful. Upon arriving in Montreal, they were lost in a blizzard and shivering in the -25°cold. To find their hotel, they turned on a laptop (笔记本电脑)and drove around in circles until they found a spot with wireless Internet coverage.

“1 know we should have planned better, but we're young. Now,when I see those guys I always say:'Remember when we were lost in the snow storm!' I'll never forget that.”

36Who are road trip vacations especially popular with?

A College students who like to travel on wheels.

B Teachers who have plenty of free time but little money

C V olunteers who want to help rebuild New Orleans.

D Americans who have no cars.

37What will Hawkins do when he sees something interesting on a road trip?

A He will turn back.

B He will drive around.

C He will stop to explore.

D He will stop exploring.

38When did motels suddenly appear everywhere?

A After the work to build the interstate highway system started.

第三篇Tightened Visa Regulations

According to South Korea's new visa regulations, native speakers of English in South Korea will be required to undergo criminal record checks, medical and drug tests, provide sealed academic transcripts (成绩单)and have their university diplomas inspected,The Korea Times has reported The tightened regulations will affect an estimated 17,000 foreigners that hold E-2 visas-specifically for foreign language teachers.

The most controversial requirement is that English teachers residing (居住)outside South Korea will have to have an interview at a South Korean Embassy before taking up their teaching posts. For applicants living in remote areas in Canada,Australia or the US,this is an additional travel burden. Meanwhile, foreign teachers currently living in South Korea must leave the country after their one-year contracts and renew their visas by visiting a neighboring country and return without additional documentation (文件证据)。

The visa changes are a reaction to public concern about the suitability of some foreign teachers. A report from the South Korean Ministry of-Education and Human Resources Development shows between 2001 and

August of this year,1,481 foreign language teachers have been caught for a range of offenses including forged (伪造的)degrees, visa violations and general lawbreaking.

But the changes are likely to slow up the supply of teachers to South .Korea's English language education sector. According to Michael Duffy, manager of a teacher placement service in South Korea, applicants have to spend a few hundred dollars and several months on getting affidavits (书面陈述书)for documents. “South Korea-has put up too many hoops (圈)to jump through,”he said, adding that foreigners would seek work elsewhere. Most foreigners wonder if the experience of working in South Korea will be worth the burden of the paper work and increasing restrictions. “I don't think (South)Korea has thought this through,”said Scott Mclnnis,a Canadian teacher based in Incheon near Seoul. “This is a reactionary move by the government that will have strong impli cations for the EFL community.”

As part of the efforts to ease the discontent (不满),the South Korean Ministry of Justice has granted a three-month grace period for current E-2 visa holders to prepare the necessary documents.

41Which of the following is NOT required of an E-2 visa applicant?

A To pass a Korean language test

B To undergo a medical test.

C To provide sealed school reports.

D To undergo a drug test.

42It can be inferred from paragraph 2 that before the visa regulations were revised foreign teachers didn't have to

A sign new contracts if they wanted to continue to work

B go through any formalities if they wanted to stay a bit longer

C visit a neighboring country if they wanted to renew their visas

D interview a South Korean official if they wanted to apply for work permits

43The list of crimes many foreign language teachers committed between 2001 ant August of this year did NOT include

A visa violations.

B forged degrees

C subversive activities

D general lawbreaking.

44The new visa policy aims at

A protecting South Korea from terrorist attacks.

B improving foreign language teaching in South Korea.

C providing more job opportunities for the South Korean people

D encouraging the South Korean people to learn the Chinese language

45EFL in paragraph 4 is an abbreviation of

A easily forgotten lovers.

B extremely fussy lawyers.

My Life at Renda

I learned very quickly that being a teaching assistant (TA) at the University of Iowa would be different from life as a teacher at Renmin University.

________________(46) Eyes staring, mouths open, students examining my big nose, hands nervous, people whispering while I wrote my name on the blackboard.

At Iowa, when my first classes began, half my students still hadn't arrived. When everyone finally found a seat, ringing cellphones and loud yawns interrupted my opening remarks.

It's not that American students were disrespectful. __________________(47) They were, however, far more skeptical than the students I had at Renda. The truth is I couldn't fault them for their skepticism. Undergraduates at large US universities -especially freshmen and sophomores ? often have several classes a semester handled by TAs. In some cases, the TA sets the course content. ______________(48) Most have good intentions, but only a

few are as effective as flesh-and-blood professors.

Every teacher has to confront obstacles to learning - no matter what the culture. Students who talk during lectures, students who cheat, students who question the grade they get for a paper or project - dealing with these is all part of the job. __________________(49)

The difference, I think - at least in my experience is that in the US I had to swallow more of my pride. __________________(50)

I had a responsibility to teach them, of course, but I had to do so indirectly-as a guide who himself had a few things to learn from the students.

A In my students' minds,I had little to offer them, except perhaps some sample questions for the mid-term exam.

B In others, the TA works as a grader and discussion leader.

C I encountered these in China, and I faced them in the US.

D On the other hand, being taught by a graduate student is not necessarily bad.

E Most were polite,or at least,indifferent

F Back at Renda,I had walked into my first classes feeling like a celebrity.

The Writing's on the Wall?

Is it art or is it just vandalism (野蛮行为)? Well, it's still a crime, but graffiti (涂鸦) has changed since the days of spraying your name on a wall to mark your territory. Street art has become much more sophisticated since a 17-year-old called Demetrius started spraying his "tag" , TAKI 183, all over the New York underground in 1971, and hip - hop culture was born. Hip-hop is a mixture of art, music and dancing, poetry, language and fashion. It came from young inner-city

people who fell left out by their richer classmates and who were desperate to express themselves in any way they could.

An experiment to control the spread of graffiti in Rochdale, Creater Manchester, has been sosuccessful that plans have been made by local street artists for an international convention in June. "We're planning to get people together from different countries like France and Cermany for a week, " says Liam, one of the organizers. The scheme started in 2000, and has attracted people of all age groups and both sexes. " We all share a commen interest and get on really well with each other. " The first site to be chosen was a subway. " Before we began, people were afraid to use the subway. We had it cleaned up and now, with all the artists hanging out down there, people are using it again. People can relate to graffiti much more now. " By providing places to display their talents legally, there has been a fall in the amount of "tagging" on people's private property.

Street artists Temper developed his drawing skills at a young age. In art classes at school he was really frustrated because the Art teacher didn't spend time with him. They thought he was already very good at art and so spend more time with other students. So, at 12 years old, Temper started painting with all these guys he'd hooked up with who were about 22 years old. He looked up to them and loved what they were doing on the streets of Wolvehampicn, England. "The whole hip -hop scene was built up of different things and I did a bit of everything. But it was always the graffiti I was best at. " he says.

Waste Not, Want Not

1 Bob and Clara Darlington, who own and run a farm in the North of England, have alwayslooked for new ways of making money out of the produce they grow. Their success began when they established a shop on their farm, so that people could come and buy fresh vegetables directly from them.

2 The business was an immediate success, and soon scored top marks in a competition set up by the Farm Retail Association to find the best farm shop in the country. The Association's inspectors found the Darlingtons' shop offered excellent service and value for money as well as quality fruit and vegetable.

3 Clara Darlington is a trained chef and, in addition to a range of home-grown foods and other local produce, she began offering a variety of prepared meals which she had made herself in the farmhouse kitchen. A small cafe alongside the farm shop was soon added, with everything that visitors could taste on the menu also being for sale in the shop.

4 Clara admits that starting the business was expensive, and she has worked very hard, but maintains that if the product is good, the public recognize this and buy it. "I aim to offer the highest quality to our customers, whether they come in for a loaf of bread, or take a whole dinner-party menu. I take it as a compliment(恭维) if people take home one of my dishes to serve to their family and friends and get away with pretending they made it themselves. "

5 So it was that the couple realized that they had a surplus of misshapen or damaged vegetables grown on the farm which were unsuitable for selling in the shop. Clara, not wishing to see them get thrown away, decided to turn them into soup.

6 The soup met with the immediate approval of customers to the shop and Clara now produces ten different varieties. She spent much of the summer traveling up and down to London by rail, doing presentations of the soups. As a result, they are now served in first-class railway restaurant cars belonging to three companies as well as being stocked by a number of high-class London stores.

第四部分:阅读理解(第31-45题,每题3分,共45分)

第1篇The Iceman

On a September day in 1991, two Germans were climbing the mountains between Austria and Italy. High up on a mountain pass, they found the body of a man lying on the ice. At that height(10,499 feet, or 3,200 meters), the ice is usually permanent, but 1991 had been an especially warm year. The mountain ice had melted more than usual and so the body had come to the surface.

It was lying face downward. The skeleton(骨架) was in perfect condition, except for a wound in the head. There was still skin on the bones and the remains of some clothes. The hands were still holding the wooden handle of an ax and on the feet there were very simple leather and cloth boots. Nearby was a pair of gloves made of tree bark(树皮) and a holder for arrows.

Who was this man? How and when had he died? Everybody had a different answer to these questions. Some people thought that it was from this century , perhaps the body of a soldier who died in World War I , since several soldiers had already been found in the area. A Swiss woman believed it might be her father, who had died in those mountains twenty years before and whose body had never been found. The scientists who rushed to look at the body thought it was probably much older, maybe even a thousand years old.

With modern dating techniques, the scientists soon learned that the Iceman was about 5,300 years old. Bom in about 3300 B.C., he lived during the Bronze Age in Europe. At first scientists thought he was probably a hunter who had died from an accident in the high mountains. More recent evidence, however, tells a different story. A

new kind of X - ray shows an arrowhead still stuck in his shoulder. It left only a tiny hole in his skin, but it caused internal damage and bleeding. He almost certainly died from this wound, and not from the wound on the back of his head. This means that he was probably in some kind of a battle. It may have been part of a larger war, or he may have been fighting bandits. He may even have been a bandit himself.

By studying his clothes and tools, scientists have already learned a great deal from the Iceman about the times he lived in. we may never know the full story of how he died, but he has give us important clues to the history of those distant times.

31. The body of the Iceman was found in the mountains mainly because __________.

A. he was lying on the ice

B. he was just on a mountain pass

C. two Germans were climbing the mountains

D. the melted ice made him visible

32. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?

A. The Iceman lived a poor life.

B. The Iceman was struck dead from behind.

C. The Iceman was killed while working.

D. The Iceman could have died from the wound in the head.

33. All the following are assumptions once made about the Ice man EXCEPT __________.

A. he was a soldier in World War I

B. he was a Swiss woman's long-lost father

C. he came from Italy

D. he was born about a thousand years ago

34. The scientists made the deduction that the Iceman

A. had got a wound on the back of his head

B. had a tiny hole in his skin causing his death

C. was hit in the shoulder by an arrowhead

D. was probably in some kind of a battle

35. The word "bandits" in paragraph 4 could be best replaced by __________.

A. soldiers

B. hunters

C. robbers

D. shooters

第2篇The Best Way to Reduce Your Weight

You hear this:"No wonder you are fat. All you ever do is eat. " You feel sad:"l skip my breakfast and supper. I run every morning and evening. What else can I do?" Basically you can do nothing. Your genes, not your life habits, determine your weight and your body constantly tries to maintain it.

Albert Stunkard of the University of Pennsylvania found from experiments that, "80 percent of the children of two obese (肥胖的) parents become obese,as compared with no more than 14 percent of the offspring of two parents of normal weight. "

How can obese people become normal or even thin through dieting? Well, dieting can be effective, but the health costs are tremendous. Jules Hirsch, a research physician at Rockefeller University, did a study of eight fat people. They were given a liquid formula providing 600 calories a day. After more than 10 weeks, the subjects lost 45ka on average. But after leaving the hospital, they all regained weight. The results were surprising: by metabolic (新陈代谢的) measurement, fat people who lost large amounts of weight seemed like they were starving. They had psychiatric problems. They dreamed of food or breaking their diet. They were anxious and depressed; some were suicidal. They hid food in their rooms. Researchers wam that it is possible that weight reduction doesn't result In normal weight, but in an abnormal state resembling that of starved non - obese people.

Thin people, however, suffer from the opposite: They have to make a great effort to gain weight. Ethan Sims, of the University of Vermont, got prisoners to volunteer to gain weight. In four to six months, they ate as much as they could. They succeeded in increasing their weight by 20 t0 25 percent. But months after the study ended they were back to normal weight and stayed there.

This did not mean that people are completely without "hope in controlling their weight. It means that those who tend to be fat will have to constantly battle their genetic inheritance if they want to significantly lower their weight. The findings also provide evidence for something scientists thought was true - each person has a comfortable weight range. The range might be as much as 9kg. Someone might weigh 60-69kg without too much effort. But going above or below the natural weight range is difficult. The body resists by feeling hungry or full

职称英语等级考试试题-综合

职称英语等级考试试题-综合A6 第三篇Play Play is the principal business of childhood, and in recent years research has shown the great importance of play in the development of a human being. From earliest infancy, every child needs opportunity and the right materials for play, and the main tools of play are toys. Their main function is to suggest, encourage and assist play. To succeed in this they must be good toys, which children will play with often, and will come back to again and again. Therefore it is important to choose suitable toys for different stages of a child’s development. In recent years research on infant development has shown that the standard a child is likely to reach, within the range of his inherited abilities, is largely determined in the first three years of his life. So a baby’s ability to profit from the right play materials should not be underestimated. A baby who is encouraged and stimulated, talked to and shown things and played with, has the best chance of growing up successfully. In the next stage, from three to five years old, curiosity knows no bounds. Every type of suitable toy should be made available to the child, for trying out, experimenting and learning, for discovering his own particular ability. Bricks and jigsaws(七巧板)and construction toys; painting, scribbling(涂鸦) and making things; sand and water play; toys for imaginative and pretending play; the first social games for learning to play and get on with others. Bt the third stage of play development-from five to seven or eight years-the child is at school. But for a few more years play is still the best way of learning, at home or at school. It is easier to see which type of toys the chills most enjoys.
