Example

Ordering raw materials

Your company is going to order some raw materials for your production.

You have been asked to help with the order.

Discuss the situation together, and decide:

(1) what you need to consider when you choose your suppliers;

(2) how will you communicate with your suppliers and work together to reduce your production costs.

Example Analysis

Candidate A: When considering a supplier, I think we must consider the price of goods first.(表明观点).

We would rather choose those who offer us a favorable price.(正说阐述观点)

或: We would not choose those who offer us a fancy price.(反说阐述观点)

Candidate B: Yes, I agree because only if we get the supply at a lower price can we make profit.(同意并说原因)

Well ,another important thing we should consider is reliability.(引出另一个观点) Candidate A: Right.(表示同意)

We will choose those who always deliver their goods on time or those who can ensure the quality of goods.(正说加强观点)

或: We would never choose those who always deliver their goods late or those who can?t ensure the quality of goods.(反说加强观点)

Candidate B: Absolutely. Late delivery may bring a heavy loss to us, and quality is the lifeline of a business or we may lose our own client.(同意并说原因)

What?s more, I think we should also consider the location of the suppliers.(引出另一个观点)

Do you agree?

Candidate A: No I don?t agree. In my opinion, the location is not the problem. If they can offer us a rock-bottom price, we would still choose them.(表示不同意并给出理由)

1)My name is Jack Edward. Could you tell me your surname please?

My family name is Huang, and my given name is Qi Guang.

2) Where are you from?

I am from Xi?an , which is in the centre of China. It?s a famous historic city, and is also well known to tourists who travel the Silk Road.

3) Would you like to tell us something about your hometown?

Xi?an is surrounded by plains, and is bordered by a plateau to the north and the Qinling Mountains to the south.

4) Where?s the interest of places to in Beijing?

They are the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven, and the Summer Palace. Beijing has a lot of other famous sites as well.

5) What do you think of the people in your hometown?

I think they are usually very friendly and somewhat conservative. If you were to visit Xi?an, you?d soon notice that the people still retain many ancient customs and tradition, which is what I mean by conservative. You?d also notice that people there are very helpful. If you ask someone for directions, they will try to help you out, or find someone else who can help you. 6) What food and dishes do people have in your hometown?

Of course jiaozi or dumplings. My province is famous for its vinegar, which is used when we eat dumplings.

7) How do you spend the Spring Festival?

I spend it in my hometown and spend a week in my parents?s home. We eat delicious food, visit family and friends, and watch TV. I also like to try and contact my high school friends and see how they?re doing and what they?re up to . We give each other presents and we buy ourselves new clothes to wear for the new years.

8) Could you tell us some customs in your country?

It has a great number of customs. Let me tell you something about friendship. Really good friends will always help each other. I can go to a friend?s home any time of the day, and he will drop what he is doing and welcome me. It might sound strange to you, because I know that in the West, people usually schedule appointments with each other in advance. But, our friendship in China are very strong and deep, and it would be unheard of not to drop what you are doing and invite a friend in.

9) How is the weather in Beijing?

There are four season. Winter is cold, dry and windy, with a bit of snow. Spring is short and wet. Summer is hot and humid, with temperatures as high as 30 degrees centigrade. It?s pretty miserable in the summer unless you have air conditioning. Fall is probably the best season-it?s very comfortable-not windy, not cold, not humid.

10) Where do you usually go? Why?

I usually go to the Temple of Heaven best because it?s very beautiful. The park around it is very spacious and is filled with large gingko trees and some very old trees. Also, in the early morning, it?s very peaceful. The older generations are practicing their Tai-ji, while the younger children are running around and playing.

11) What problems does the governments face (in Beijing)? How can they be dealt with?

A lot of people have recently been laid off work.. They have little income and many have a family to support. I think they should be given a chance to get another job- maybe by giving them more training or something like that. Perhaps if the government provided a short-term vocational training course to people who have been laid off…that would help with the unemployment problem.

12) What does tourism bring to China?

Each year we are getting more tourists coming to China since the adoption of the open door policy. People see more foreigner and are used to the sight of foreigner compared to years ago. This is true in big cities like Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou etc. China is becoming more cosmopolitan and people are getting more knowledge of the outside world.

13) Where do you like to visit on your holidays? And tell us why.

Xinjiang if I have a chance. Xinjiang is in the west of China and it has a large platform. The people there are mostly minority groups and I saw in the pictures the landscape is incredibly beautiful. If I travel to Xinjiang, I would take a train so that I can see the landscape throughout the journey.

14) How do you spend your holidays?

I usually meet with friends and go on outings. That?s the only time I can relax and do something I enjoy. Other than that, it is really difficult because I am always busy with my work and sometimes

I have to work night shifts.

15) Would you like to say something about your family?

Yes. I …d like to. I have 3 brothers and no sisters. Both of my parents are still living, and are still working. My grandparents on my father?s side are both living too, though my mother?s parents have already passed away. I am also married…I got married 2 years ago.

16) Do you like going shopping?

a. Very much. I spend most of my weekends shopping. Even if it?s just buying something small, I love to walk around and see what?s on sale and what?s available. My husband thinks I?m crazy about shopping, and he always tells me that I?m spending too much money. So, it?s a bit of an issue of conflict between my husband and me right now.

b. No, not at all. I really can?t stand it. Whenever my wife wants to go shopping, I just hand her some money and tell her to have a good time. I?d rather stay at home and just relax than fight the crowds in a busy shopping mall. I also hate just standing around and waiting for my wife to decide what to buy. It seems she takes an eternity to make a simple decision.

17) Can you cook?

a. Yes, I can cook many different styles of dishes- from Sichuan style to Peking duck. My husband says that I?m really a very good cook, and he always talks about starting a restaurant one day, and hiring me as his chief cook.

b. No. I really hate cooking. I just don?t like to spend much time on cooking, so I usually eat in the cafeteria. I know the food?s not very tasty in the cafeteria, but I don?t have enough money to eat out in a restaurant all the time, and I?m too lazy and unmotivated to cook for myself.

18) Do you often cook in your family?

No. My husband dose most of the cooking. For some reason, he finds cooking more enjoyable than I do. He also gets home from work earlier than I, so he just starts cooking dinner. By the time I get home, dinner?s almost ready. I do cook meals on weekends, but most of the time, it?s my husband who cooks.

19) Can you tell me what your major is?

Accounting, a major part of the School of Business at my university. I mainly studied international accounting system in foreign trade, to be more specific.

20) What do you think of your major?

a. I enjoy it very much. I didn?t know very much about it before I studied it, but I?m glad I chose it because it suits me a lot. My father actually suggested that I major in Accounting, because he thought that I would enjoy it.

b. I don?t like it at all. I wish I could have chosen a different one, but it?s next to impossible to change majors. I just hope that when I get a job, I won?t have to do a lot of work in my major.

21) What?s your educational background?

I went to Tsinghua University and studied Civil Engineering. I graduated with a bachelor?s degree in 1996. Then, I worked for 3 years in a factory before I went back to school and continued my studies at Beijing Polytechnic University, where I just graduated last year with a Master?s degree in Business.

22) You think Qinghua is the best university in our country. Please give me some reasons. Because it is one of the leading centres of scientific research, not only in China but also around the world. Many of the professors are doing research projects with professors in other countries, and are at the cutting edge of new technology. Also, it is one of the most difficult university to get into.

23) How do you try to get good grades when you are a student?

I think it?s important for a top student to be very intelligent, hardworking, and motivated. Without these three key factors, a student will not achieve his/her full potential. Also, the very best student must be more intelligent, more hard working and even more motivated than his peers.

24) What?s your job?

I work in the head office of Motorola. It?s near the Lufthansa Centre, by the third ring road and Liangmahe Road in Beijing. I?ve been there since 1985.

25) What?s your business?

I?m a professor in the Mathematics Department at Renmin University. I?ve been there for 9 year already.

26) What do you do during a day?

Most of the time, I sit behind a desk and answer phone calls. It?s not a very active job, but I do enjoy it most of the time, except when I get a phone call from a very angry customer. Sometimes, they just want to shout at someone, and because I?m the first one to answer the phone, I get the full vent of their anger.

27) Say something about your job?

Well, I?m a teacher of French. I teach undergraduate students who are majoring in French. I?ve been working for about 10 years already, teaching a whole variety of course over the past 10 years.

I suppose my teaching method is rather unconventional. I like to use French in the classroom as the medium of instruction. Many professors still prefer to teach the second language while speaking Chinese. I really feel that students need to be challenged from the very start to overcome their insecurities of speaking a different language.

28) What hobbies do you have?

Basketball. I?m a big basketball fan, even though I?m not very good at playing basketball myself. I love to watch the NBA on TV whenever I get a chance. I play ping-pong and volleyball whenever

I can.

29) What do you do in your free time?

I usually play on the computer and surf the internet. Once I get on the internet, I find that time really passes very quickly. Before I know it, several hours have passed and my back and neck are aching. I also like to go out for walks and read novels on ancient Chinese history.

30) Can you tell me what your favorite sport is? What are the rules?

Football most. The rules are basically this: There are two team of eleven players. Each team tries to kick the ball into the other?s team?s goal. You can?t hit the ball with your hands, unless you?re the goalkeeper. Also, football is a non-contact sport, so if you tackle an opposing players, you will be given a warning, and you might be kicked out of the game if you persist.

31) Can you say something about facilities in your university/Beijing?

a. At my university, we have mostly outdoor facilities- a track, football field, volleyball and badminton courts, and ping pong tables. The university is just now installing a new sports facility, but I?m not really sure what it?s going to be. I think there will probably be a weight room and maybe even a swimming pool.

b. Beijing has a lot of modern indoor facilities offering bowling, tennis, swimming, and other things. But, it?s too expensive for most Chinese, and you have to belong to the club in order to use the facilities.

32) Which do you prefer, reading books or newspaper?

I like to read newspaper such as the 21st century and China Daily. I usually read as long as I have time. Both of these newspapers are in English, and I find that it really is a good way for me to practise my English.

33) Where do you often go to see a film?

A cinema just around the corner from my home. It?s called the Poly Plaza Cinema. It?s probably one of the biggest cinemas in Beijing, so they always play the most modern films. And, the ticket price is still fairly reasonable.

34) What do you like doing when you?re free?

a. I like reading most. Because, I?m kind of an indoor type of person. I am interested in reading all kinds of books and newspaper or magazine articles, especially those on current issues. I just want to be informed of what?s going on in the world.

b. I?m kind of an outdoor type. I like to go swimming or play badminton with my family or friends during weekends or holidays. If I have a longer vacation, I usually travel to further away places all over the country.

35) Do you like music? What kind of music do you like?

Yes. Definitely classical music. I have nearly every famous classical work ever recorder. I could sit for hours in a room with my stereo turned up, just listening to classical music. I have also attended several concerts here in Beijing, where the world famous orchestras have come to play the great work of Mozart or Beethoven or Chopin or other composers.

36) Where have you been?

I?ve been to most of the major cities in China, and I?ve also travelled to Thailand and Singapore. I think that the more I travel, the more I want to travel. It?s so interesting to see how other people live, and it helps me to have a better understanding of other people. It?s really an amazing way to learn about different cultures- much more exciting and lasting longer than just reading about it in a textbook.

37) What do you think of the courses in your university?

a. I can say most of my courses will be helpful in the future. My university has tried very hard to keep up to date with the developments in our field. Having said that, there are some compulsory classes which I have no interest in, like politics and history. But overall, I do think the university has provided me with a good education. I don?t think it?s possible to learn everything one would need for a job, but I am satisfied with my courses and know that they will give me a good start.

b. I don?t think they are very good. There are some compulsory classes which I have no interest in. Also, our facilities are not very modern, so there are many things we cannot do.

38) Is American English better than British English?

Yes. It?s much easier to understand for me because I?ve had 2 foreign teaches – one of whom was from America and the other from Canada. I find the America accent to be more natural and informal, while the British accent is somewhat proper and inaccessible in some ways.

39) Can you tell me something the traditional architecture of our country?

Yes. Firstly, the buildings are made of wood or bamboo instead of stone or metal. Secondly, they are very high and always have curved eaves. Thirdly, the traditional buildings have doors and windows that are adorned with paintings.

40) Something about the sporting facilities like in your hometown?

There aren?t very many sporting facilities that are free and open to the public. To use most of the indoor facilities you must be a member. The outdoor fields are open to anyone. We have two indoor swimming pools, four football fields, and many basketball, badminton and volleyball courts. Also, there are a number of outdoor swimming pools, which are very popular, especially in the summer.

41) What is the reason of the rising birth rate in the rural areas in China?

Well, in my opinion there are mainly three causes. First of all in the countryside, especially in underdeveloped areas where farm work is done mainly with manual labour, people want to have as many children as possible to help out in the field. Another reason is that many farmers are still quite conservative and prefer to have a son to carry on their family name. Besides, there is no retirement insurance in the rural areas, so farmers need more than one child to support them when they are too old to work.

42) What is the difference between friendship and love?

I think friendship is a kind of loyalty. It?s strong and devoted, but it doesn?t have the same feeling as love. When you fall in love with someone, there?s this excitement, this chemistry, this feeling in the air that makes you feel really good. Friendship can provide you with some of that feeling, but not the depth nor heights of it. Love is stronger and more intense than friendship.

43) Are the subjects you are studying today relevant to present society? Give me some reason. Most of them are relevant, but some, like History and Politics, are not. I think that most of what I?m currently studying will be useful some time in the future. It?s true that there have been many changes in China, and there will be many changes to come. So, I suppose it?s not possible that all my subjects will be relevant in the near future. Even so, I know that I?m learning a lot of good principles that will be important no matter what changes may occur.

44)What do you think of TV and newspaper?

I like to know what?s going on in the world, so TV and newspaper are good ways for me to know what?s happening. I can?t say that I completely believe everything that I see on TV or read in the newspaper, but I do find them very interesting and entertaining. I?m kind of an information junkie, so I just like to know current things.

45) Would you like to say something about this idea that education should be more practical?

a. I love to study theory. Even if we do practice, it won?t necessarily be exactly relevant to our future jobs. Also, learning theories helps to develop our way of thinking. It gives us new ways of understanding and seeing things. Learning these ideas will help us as we meet problems in our day to day work. We need to be good problem solvers, so if we learn many ways to conceptualize a problem, we will also have more ways to solve it.

b. I?ll say practice is more important. What good are theories if they can?t be used in some practical way? I?ve heard of many people who study in university and earn a bachelor?s, master?s, or even a doctor?s degree, but they?re really no use at work. This proves that practice is more important than theory. I certainly don?t want to spend my time studying all kinds of theories, and not knowing anything useful for my job.

46) Do you think many people are aware of environmental issues?

I think the average person knows very little about global environmental issues. Even environmental issues in China are nearly unheard of. I think it?s probably because we?re still a developing country, and we don?t have the luxury of spending money on environmental concerns.

I would say that most people know that it?s important to conserve water if possible, though.

47) What are the most important changes in your field over the past ten years?

a. One big change has been the introduction of technology in all aspects of research. Now, it is possible to use computers to conduct simulated experiments, while controlling for most of the variables. This has been a great leap forward, as it opens up the doors for research to be conducted without the problem of extraneous factors.

b. I think the most important change in my field is that there is more and more competition from the western world. Many big foreign companies have entered the Chinese market. It is a challenge or an opportunity for some Chinese enterprises, but a disaster for others.

48) You have told me about a frightening car accident you had. Can you tell my why we have many traffic accidents?

It?s a case of modern society encountering the old way of life. Older people in China are not used to car traffic and do not have a “road sense” of how to travel on road with cars. Sometimes I see a car zooming down a road, and the next thing you know there?s a bicycle cart making it?s way slowly across the road. The car slams on its brakes, but the man riding the bicycle cart really has no inkling of how close a call that just is. That other major factor causing road accidents is that there are really too many vehicles on the road. The more vehicles, the more likely it is that there will be accident.

49) Is drug a serious problem in China? What are the results?

It?s getting more serious than before. I think there are two main consequences. First, It?s obviously harmful to people?s health. Second, it threatens the social stability of the country because people living on drugs may commit crimes if they are short of money. A lot of crimes are drug related. 50) Do you think the unemployment problem could be solved?

Well. It is not easy to solve it. I don?t think the problem can be solved in the near future because there are a large number of laid off workers and not enough job opportunities. The government should try to create more job opportunities in the field of tertiary industry, and on the other hand, laid off workers should put more efforts in self-improvement in order to find betters jobs.

PART 1

The interview- about 3 minutes

In this part interlocutor asks questions to each of the candidates in turn. You in this part have to give information about yourself and express personal opinions.

答案

Part one

What is your name?

My name is A

What work do you do?

I am a teacher in middle school.

I have never been to your country. What is it like?

This is a big question. But I think there are several things you should know:

First of all China is a large country with t territory of 9,600,000 square kms.

Another thing you should know is that China has a long history of over 5000 years. Again China has the largest population in the world. Does that give you a clear idea?

Which is the best university in your country?

I suppose Beijing University is.

For one thing it has a world-wide reputation as a comprehensive university. It has been my dream to go to Beijing University since I was a child.

For another a lot of famous statemen and scholars used to study or teach there.

One more reason is that it is in the capital of China. I?ve always wanted to have a look at the beautiful city.

What are the most important factors when you accept a new job?

If there?s plenty of training offers, I?d be satisfied. In service training course will help me a lot in my future career. The other factors like salary, location etc. are of minimum importance. A man shouldn?t be too fussy when he?s aiming high.

A: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?

Selecting applicants for a job

◆Working experience

◆Personal qualities

B: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?

Choosing a new supplier

◆Prices and discounts

◆Reputation

C: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?

Aiming to improve production quality

◆Up to date equipment

◆Staff training

First, I think working experience is very important when selecting applicants. Applicants who have already had the work experience in the relevant fields will learn the new job easier and quicker. And it will also save the company a lot of training fees if applicants have the related experience.

Second, we must consider the personal qualities of the applicants, such as personality and health. Companies tend to employ people whose character fits a special job. For example, consulting company tends to employ applicant who is analytical and knowledgeable, but advertising agents like their employees to be energetic and creative.

Third, I believe language is of great importance when selecting applicants. Nowadays, we do business with people from all over the world. Always we buy goods from Africa, and sell our electronic products to Europe; a foreign language especially English is needed if the company wants to expand to the world. Applicants who can speak one or more foreign languages will have a better chance to get the job.

I choose topic…

1. first…second…third…

2. firstly…secondly…thirdly…lastly…

3. one…another…the third one…and the last

4. to begin with…in addition/…another important consideration…finally

5. first of all…in the second place…last but not least…

6. to begin with…moreover…finally…

举例: for example, for instance, take…for example, such as…

解释: that is, that means, it means that…

对比: in comparison with, compared to…

Well, that?s all my points.

Right, it looks as though I?ve covered the main areas/ main points.

I think that just covers everything.

Before I close, let me just summarize the main points.

So, to sum up…

I choose topic A- what is important when selecting applicants for a job. As to this topic, as far as I am concerned, there are 3 things to consider.

For example, consulting company tends to employ applicant who is analytical and knowledgeable, but

advertising agents like their employees to be energetic and creative.

PART 2

‘Mini presentation?-about 6 minutes

In this part of the test you are asked to give a short talk on a business topic. You have to choose one of the topics from the three below and then talk for about one minute. You have one minute to prepare your idea.

Part Three?

◆Personal identification

◆The office, general business environment and routine

◆Entertainment of clients, free time, relationship with colleagues and clients.

◆Travel and conference meetings

◆Using the telephone

◆Health and safety

◆Buying and selling

◆Company structures, system, process

◆Products and services

◆Results and achievements

◆Business issues

◆Other topic areas

a.摈弃自我主义和依赖思想,遵循“give your opinion +ask the opinion of your partner”的谈话方式

Examinee A: OK, shall we make a start?

Examinee B: OK!

Examinee A: Let?s start with travel and accommodation arrangements we need to make for the trade fair in China before the trip. First, I think we need to book the British

Airlines tickets, because the open day is very close. What’s your opinion? Examinee B: Traveling by BA is a good idea, and I think we can book the roundtrip ticket. It can save us a great deal!

Examinee A: Wonderful! And we must also consider the accommodation, what do you think?

b. (Say again in other words!),这样既展现了自己的rich vocabulary,又使对话得以延续。

Examinee B: We need to stay there for 3 days, so I think we need to book a hotel. Crown Hotel is

a famous local hotel in China. It can provides us with comfortable bed, breakfast

and supper. Do you think it?s a good idea?

Examinee A: Crown Hotel is fine. We can get a good rest in the hotel, I think we don’t need to bother with lunch, because we have to go to the trade fair and may have lunch

outside. We will be very busy soon then !

Monitoring the quality of service provided Feedback from the customers A: Feedback from the customers is very important because feedback can reflect the opinion of the customers on the quality of your service. To get this feedback a.s.a.p. and analyze it carefully is very helpful. From this feedback you can know what your customers think of your service what they are not satisfied with and how they like you to improve the quality of your service. Once you know what your customers want you will have a clear objective to improve or maintain the quality of your service and your monitoring will be more effective. Checking sales figures A: when we monitor the quality of service provided we must first check our sales figures. Sales figures is one of the most important factors in testing if the service you provide has high quality and if the customers are satisfied with your service. If your sales figures continue to grow that means you succeed in maintaining the quality of your service and your customers are confident when choosing your service. If there is a sudden decrease in your sales figure that will probably mean that you are now in trouble and the quality of your service is declining or undermined by some factors of uncertainty, which means you have to check the whole quality-control system to find out where the problem is. 2. Choosing a new sales agent Experience of agent A: we should first consider the experience of the agent we choose. An experienced agent has profound knowledge on sales and is very professional in promoting sales and selling goods to customers. Furthermore experienced agent may have established his or her sales channels or relations which are the key factors to the success of sales. They can help

What can I call you?" 我第二次考8分的时候被问到一个问题:“Are physical exercises popular in China?”

Sample 2 As we all know, the criteria used by HR professionals in screening and selecting applicants normally include such factors as working experience, personal qualities and communicative skills. Firstly, we pay a lot of attention to working experience of the applicant. A person with a solid record of related experience is more likely to fit in with a new company. Therefore he or she can be trusted to fulfill the tasks and solve the problems in a more professional and competent way. In addition to this, we also look at the personal qualities of the applicant. Does he or she has integrity, perseverance or ‘can do’spirit? Surely any organization can benefit from the reliability, devotion and enthusiam of its employees. Finally, good communicative skills such as interpersonal skills and team spirit are also becoming an important precondition in selecting qualified employees. B: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…? Preparing for a job interview S tudying the job advertisement Finding out about the company Before you go for an interview, you must make preparations so as to face the interviewer with more confidence. They include studying the job advertisement, finding out about the company, preparing yourself psychologically, etc.

(Tips on how to cope with Part 1) (1)Greet upon entering the exam room. Good morning, sir / miss / madam. Good afternoon, sir / miss / madam. Nice to meet you. (2)Relax yourself, yet do avoid over relaxing yourself. (3)Familiarize yourself with the pronunciation and intonation of the interlocutor and the other candidate. (4)Be precise in understanding the questions. Pardon, please? I beg your pardon? Sorry, could you please say that again? I’m sorry, but I didn’t quite catch you. Would you please repeat what you’ve

Topic Sentence

For example,First , secondly, last but not the least来讲分论点,但这样给考官的感觉是在背作文,而不是真正的口语。 最好用well , also , actually ,as a matter of fact , you know 等等词。 详细我们以一个7月常考的考题试范:a place where you can listen to music A place where you can listen to music 一旦遇到这个考题,大部分同学都会说Home , club, concert , 尽量与别的考生区别开来,想想还有什么地方可以听,今天我们来讲下:学校的HALL

第二部分: I choose topic A, 然后把题念一遍。 总括I think there are three points/aspects to consider. In conclusion,/In summary, I think 三个要点重复一下are important when doing sth.(重复一下原题的要求) Well, that’s all I want to say. Thank you! 或 Well, I think I have covered the main points. Thank you! Which do you think is the most important point? Why? I am very interested in -----Could you further explain ----- , please? I think --- is also important. What do you think of it? Could you say something about ----- in your

(Beg you pardon; Will you repeat that, please?, etc。) (What do you mean by that? etc。)
