1) vt.

(1)使窒息,闷死;掐死,噎死

2)vi. 噎住,哽住

poison n. & vt.

1)n.poison可作可数名词和不可数名词,意为“毒药,毒害”,其比喻意为“毒害,弊害”。

其形容词形式为poisonous,意为“有毒的”。例如:

the poison of idealism唯心主义的毒害

Some mushrooms contain a deadly poison.有些蘑菇含有致命毒素。

2)poison作及物动词,意为“使中毒,毒死,放毒于”,比喻意为“毒害,毁掉,破坏”。

例如:

Large sections of the river have been poisoned by toxic waste from factories.

工厂的有毒废弃物污染了大段大段的河流。

Slander poisoned his mind.诽谤毁了他的意志。

8. Examples include mild sunburn…例如轻度的晒伤……

mild adj.

1)“温柔的,和善的”。指某人的态度温厚、安详,性情或举止温柔、文雅。

I'm the mildest man alive.我是世上最和善的人。

2)“不强烈的,淡的”。指食物、酒类、烟草等。

I smoke only mild cigars.我只抽味道较淡的雪茄。

3)“稳定的,暖和的”。指天气状况,常和temperate成为同义词。

与之搭配的名词常见的有weather,climate,winter等。

例如:

The weather is warm and mild in this part.这地区的天气很温暖。

4)它还可表示(作用或感官效果上)“缓和的,适度的;(处罚等)轻微的、宽大的”。

a mild medicine作用和缓的药 mild punishments轻微的惩罚

9. Hold the bandage in place with tape. 用胶布把绷带固定。

in place在适当的位置;适当

place作名词时,其含义为“场所;地方;位置;席位”,在in place这个短语中多是用作比喻。

其反义词为out of place。这两个短语多放在be之后作表语。

类似短语:

be in/out of order 有条理/无条理;坏了

be in/out of control 正常/失控

be in/out of danger 有危险/脱离危险

in place of...=take the place of...代替;取代

①You can use wood in place of coal.你可以用木柴代煤。

②Cotton is taking the place of silk.棉花要取代丝绸。

③Your proposal is quite in place.你的提议很恰当。

10. John was presented with his award at a ceremony which recognized the bravery of ten p eople who had saved the life of another.

在颁奖大会上,约翰被授予奖赏,大会表彰了抢救别人生命的十个人的勇敢行为。

1)句中的present作动词用,表示“给予,赠送”之意,常用于present sth.to sb.或present s b.with sth.

搭配中,此外,present作动词还有“呈现,显示;阐述,表达;引见”等意思。

例如:

①The same problem presented itself to her again. 同样的问题又在她身上出现。

②He presented the school with a check for one million dollars.

他赠予学校一张一百万美元的支票。

③May I present you to my husband?

我可以把您介绍给我丈夫吗?

2)另外,present还有以下几种用法:

(1)形容词,既可作前置修饰语,也可作表语,常有“现存的,现在的;在场的,出席的”等含义。例如:

④The present president is a woman.现任总统是位女士。

⑤She was present at the meeting.她出席了会议。

(2)present作不可数抽象名词时,表示区别过去或将来的“现在”;作可数名词时,意为“礼物”。

⑥We learn from the past,experience the present and hope for success in the future.

我们学习过去,体验现在,希望未来成功。

⑦I got many presents for my birthday.我收到很多生日礼物。

11. He immediately asked a number of nearby people for bandages, but…

a number of+可数名词,谓语用复数,意为“许多、大量的……”,the number of+可数名词,谓语用单数,

意为“……的数目”。例如:

①A number of problems have arisen.已经出现了许多问题。

②The number of colleges has increased in the past 10 years.

在过去的十年里,大学的数量有所增加。

表示“许多、大量”的短语:

(二)易混词辨析:

1. aid/help

aid与help在作动词时,都有“帮助”之意。有时可通用。例如:I aided/helped him in his wo rk.(我帮助他工作。)所不同的是,aid是比较正式的用法,较为庄重,在日常生活中不多用。help则含义较广,特别在日常生活中用得较多,几乎所有用aid的地方都可用help代替。

思考:我们学过的表示“帮助”之意的词还有哪个?请说明其用法。

2. wound/damage/destroy/harm/hurt/injure

1)wound常指在战争、暴力或灾害中受伤,也可指精神上的创伤。其名词是wound。指战斗中刀或枪的创伤。

伤口

2)damage指伤害人或物而使之失去价值、功能或正常的外观,该词也可作名词。多用于自然灾害中的损害。

3)destroy指具体的或抽象的事物受到的彻底损害而很难恢复,故常用指“破坏、毁坏、摧毁”。

4)harm常用于口语,一般只作及物动词,表示对……有害、损害”,特指伤及一个人或其心情、健康、权利、事业等。并使之产生痛苦、损害或某种不幸遭遇。其名词只能作不可数名词,意为“损害、伤害”。

5)hurt为一般用语,既可以指肉体上的,也可指精神上的,也可表示在事故中受伤。其名词为hurt。

尤指精神上或感情上的伤害、肉体上的伤痛。

6)injure主要指在事故中受伤。其名词是injury,可指平时的大小创伤或伤害,还可指事故中的伤害。

3. electric/electrical

1) electric 用于以下两种情况:一是指可发电的东西,二是指靠电力操作或由电力生产的东西,如an electric station 发电站;an electric kettle电热水壶。

2)electrical则指与电力相关的物品或人员,如electrical engineer电气工程师。

今天真热,而电扇不能用。

②A lot of electronic equipment is needed for large theatres.

大剧院需要很多电子设备。

8. 选D。此题考查省略句。答语中省略了the land will be used for。问句中what作介词for 的宾语,只有D项可代替what作for的宾语。
