“NOW I just don’t believe that.”Surely all of us, at some point, have watched a movie and thought: It’s simply badly researched, or, the makers must think we’re idiots(白痴).

Recently, the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph ran a humorous piece on unconvincing tech moments from some top movies. Let’s see what all the fuss (激动) is about.

Telegraph writer Tom Chiver’s first example is from the end-of-the-world movie Independence Day, in which a characte comes up with a virus capable of destroying Windows,

t he computer system the alien spacecraft uses. “It’s a good thing they didn’t have Norton Antiv irus,” jokes Chivers.

It’s just one case of a movie that takes a lot of license with its science. Another one Chivers mentions is from Star Wars, where glowing beams of light traveling throuth space look very impressive. The problem is that in space there are no air particles (粒子) for the light to reflect off. In reality, they’d be invisible, which wouldn’t look so cool on the big screen.

Chiver’s second piece of Star Wars nonsense is the sound the fighters make in the movies: “the bellow (咆哮) of an elephant mixed with a car driving on a wet road”. But sound needs a medium (介质) to travel through, like air. In space, there wouldn’t actually be any sound at all.

Few people would deny that the mind-bending Matrix films make for great viewing, but for Chives, the science in the movies is a little silly.

And finally: as Chivers points out, DNA is not replaceable. But this bit of elementary genetice(遗传学) passed the makers of the 2002 Bond film Die Another Day by. In the film the villain (坏人) has “gene therapy (疗法)” to change his appearance and his DNA, which is completely impossible.

When I was a young man just out of law school and eager to get on with my life, on a whim (心血来潮) I briefly put aside my reading preference for fiction and history and bought one of those how-to books: How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life, by Alan Lakein. The book’s main point was the necessity of listing short-, medium-, and long-term life goals, then categorizing

them in order of their importance, with the A group being the most important, the B group next, and the C the last, that listing under each goal specific activities designed to achieve them.

I still have that peperback book, now almost thirt y years old. And I’m sure I have that old list s omewhere buried in my papers, though I can’t find it. However, I do remember the A list I wanted to be a good man, have a good marriage and children, have good friends, make a successful political life, end w rite a great book. Whether I’m a good man is, of course, for God to judge. I know thai I am not as good as my strongest supporters believe or as I hope to become, nor as bad as my harshest critics assert. I have been graced beyond measure by my family life with Hillry and Chelsea. Like all families’ lives, ours is not perfect, but it has been wonderful Its flaws, as the whole world knows, are mostly mine, and its continuing promise is grounded in their love.

No person I know ever had more or better friends. Indeed, a strong case can be made that I rose to the presidency on the shoulders of my personal friends, the now legendary FOBs. My life in politics was a joy. I loved campaigns and loved governing, I always tried to keep things moving in the right d irection, to give more people a chance to live their dreams, to lift people’s spirits, and to bring them together. That's the way I kept score.

Last year a single letter written by Albert Einstein was sold for more than $400,000. But could an e-mall printout or an electronic file reach similar heights? That’s the question facing

those who deal in the literary artifacts.(手工艺品) of public figures, as they struggle to work out how to do business in the electronic world where information can be copied and spread out more easily than ever before.

“Booksellers, collectors and libraries are already trading in digital, objects,” Joan Winterkorn, an antiquarian and the bookseller Bernard Quaritch told people present at the Digital Lives conference at the British Library earlier this week. When Emory University Library bought author Salman Rushdie’s archives (档案) in 2006, it received a desktop computer, three laptops, a hard drive and a smart phone along with his paper files. And the writer John Updike, who died last month, started using computers in the 1980s, Winterkom pointed out, so his “papers” will include a big store of electronic documents.

So far, however, digital archives have been traded as just a small part of a larger, mainly paper-based archive, and to date the paper parts have largely driven the highest prices. Indeed, no one is quite sure how much the digital documentes of a historical figure are worth.

“I don’t feel the same way about the printout of an e-mail as I do a letter,”said Gabriel Heaton, a literary manuscript specialist, adding that more real digital objects were easier for auctioneers (拍卖商) to price and sell. “What about a laptop? For example, the one used by JK Rowling to write Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in an Edinburgh cafe has real value,”he said, “because she used it,”Even if the hard drive had been cloned by a library, the artifact w ould still he valuable. Barack Obama’s Blackberry will likely make some collectors very happy in future.

Although some auctioneers and booksellers suggested that digital archives would end up being valued at levels close to their paper ones, Gordon Bell, from Microsoft Research, suggested that prices should actually fall to almost nothing. “Once it’s been copied and spread out the value is gone. It’s just a piece of memory.”

41. What is the main idea of this passage?

A. The passages talks about the value of some antiques.

D. The passage mainly deals with different attitudes toward the value of both paper-based

42. According the passage, which one of the following statements is TRUE?

Taking a gap year before entering university is the dream of many high school graduates in the UK. during which they could do something interesting and meaningful, such as volunteering, travelling and discovering the world. Students may apply early and ask the university to hold their place when they take a gap year. Not only is it a valuable opportunity for them to grow up, but it helps gain life experience and become better prepared for college life. This year, however, thousands Of students have given up their gap year in order to go straight to university for the reason that tuition fees are increasing sharply next year. Some experts are anxious about the phenomenon due to the thought that it will bring about bad influences while those students are bunting for jobs.

任务型写作:Apossible version:

Independent Project was run by some students in Massachusetts where they arranged their own study and evaluated each other with the help of teachers. It proved the importance of students’ taking control of their own study.

Similar to their practice, my desk mate Jack and I tried to compete and cooperate at the beginning of Senior Three. We made our own plans, answered each other’s questions, and decided that once a week, we would gather and talk about our progress and obstacles in study. Sometimes we had to fight against the tight schedule and piles of homework, but we both agree it’s really helpful.

Judging from my painful experience and this successful one, I think letting students arrange and control their own study has both advantages and disadvantages. Obviously, it can greatly motivate the students who fall behind and lose their confidence to go on. It also provides much freedom for those accomplished ones not to be held back by regular curriculum. But we had to admit that students are not mature enough to know what is best for them.

Therefore, I suggest that students should be given more opportunities to take control of their own study based on the guidelines Provided by the experienced teachers. Only in the way can they be clear about their goals and keep their passion for study.
