The Byronic hero is an idealised but flawed character exemplified in the life and writings of Lord Byron, characterised by his ex-lover Lady Caroline Lamb as being "mad, bad and dangerous to know".

The Byronic hero first appears in Byron's semi-autobiographical epic narrative poem Childe Harold's Pilgrimage The Byronic hero typically exhibits the following characteristics:

high level of intelligence and perception

cunning and able to adapt

sophisticated and educated

self-critical and introspective

mysterious, magnetic and charismatic

struggling with integrity

power of seduction and sexual attraction

social and sexual dominance

emotional conflicts, bipolar tendencies, or moodiness

a distaste for social institutions and norms

being an exile, an outcast, or an outlaw

"dark" attributes not normally associated with a hero

disrespect of rank and privilege

a troubled past

The Byronic hero is also featured in many different contemporary novels, and it is clear that Lord Byron's work continues to influence modern literature as the precursor of a commonly encountered type of anti-hero.

She Walks in Beauty 《

In June, 1814, several months before he met and married his first wife, Anna Milbanke, Lord Byron attend ed a party at Lady Sitwell’s. While at the party, Lord Byron was inspired by the sight of his cousin, the beautiful Mrs. Wilmot, who was wearing a black spangled mourning dress. Lord Byron was struck by his cousin’s dark hair and fair face, the mingling of various lights and shades. This became the essence of his poem about her.

She Walks in Beauty

She walks in beauty, like the night

她在美中穿行;

Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

And all that’s best of dark and bright

Meet in her aspect and her eyes;

Thus mellowed to that tender light

Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade more, one ray less,

Had half impaired the nameless grace

Which waves in every raven tress,

Or softly lightens o’er her face;

Where thoughts serenely sweet express

How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

不少半点柔阴;

美溶进她的眼神;

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,

So soft, so calm, yet eloquent

The smiles that win, the tints that glow.

But tell of days in goodness spent,

A mind at peace with all below,

A heart whose love is innocent!

无言胜似有声;

According to his friend, James W. Webster, “I did take him to Lady Sitwell’s party in Seymour Road. He there for the first time saw his cousin, the beautiful Mrs. Wilmot. When we returned to his rooms in Albany, he said little, but desired Fletcher to give him a tumbler of brandy, which he drank at once to Mrs. Wilmot’s health, then retired to rest, and was, I heard afterwards, in a sad state all night. The next day he wrote those charming lines upon her—She walks in Beauty like the Night…”

When a man hath no freedom to fight for at home,

Let him combat for that of his neighbours;

Let him think of the glories of Greece and of Rome,

And get knock'd on the head for his labours,

To do good to mankind is the chivalrous plan,

And is always as nobly requited;

Then battle for freedom wherever you can,

And, if not shot or hang'd, you'll get knighted.

When a Man Hath No Freedom to Fight for at Home /
