SAN FRANCISCO—Lost in the nationwide electoral tumult(骚动) Tuesday was

another important vote, this one by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which took on one of the great tasting issues of our day:the Happy Meal.

The board, whose political leanings(倾向) can sometimes fall somewhere between Democrat and Dadaist, passed a ban. It says restaurants shouldn't give away toys unless the meals they provide meet certain healthy nutritional standards for calories, sodium and fat.

The bill was passed 8 to 3.It was sponsored by Supervisor Eric Mar,who had said how he had been horrified by his daughter's collection of giveaway toys.He regarded the bill as a way to strike a blow against fatty, salty fast food.Mr.Mar said he hoped the act would inspire fast-food companies to “provide better choices”.McDonald's called the bill misguided. “It's not what our customers want,” said Danya Proud, a spokeswoman for the company. “Nor is it something they asked for.” Nor did the ban please Mayor Gavin Newsom, who was elected the state's vice governor on Tuesday. He said he would veto(否决) the bill, though the eight “yes” votes put him under a lot of pressure. “The mayor firmly believes this is a wrong approach to fighting childhood obesity,” said Tony Winnicker, a spokesman for the mayor.

But the board said its decision was backed by some unhappy facts, including a recent finding that nearly 30 percent of city fifth graders were overweight.

San Francisco is not the first place to ban such toys;Santa Clara County,to the south, did so in April.

Under the bill, any meals will have to have fewer than 600 calories, fewer than 640 milligrams(毫克) of sodium and less than 35 percent of calories of fat (with the exception of some healthy items, like nuts).

Restaurants can either match those standards or offer no toy to customers.

Climate change has been taking place for a long time. However, in the past, the changes were so minuscule that we did not notice them. Now these changes are taking place quickly and the effects are being felt all over the world. While some people still do not believe in climate change, it is a reality that we have to face. The changes in the weather patterns all over the world are having a bad effect not just on the animals and plants, but also on humans.

Human activity is responsible for the climate change that the earth is facing today. Increased emissions(排放物) of greenhouse gases are causing more damage to the earth's climate. Unfortunately, climate change is irreversible(不可逆的). Apart from human activities, there are also some natural causes of climate change.

Solar change is one reason for climate change. The sun is a major source of energy and is an important part of our climate. However, due to solar change, global warming has started.

The way the earth goes around the sun plays an important role as to how sunlight is distributed over the surface of the earth. It is due to this revolution that the earth faces changes in its climate each year. As volcanoes erupt and pour out lava, they also release small amounts of matter into the atmosphere, which have an effect on the climate of the region.

All in all, though these natural processes cause natural changes in the earth's climate, the biggest influence on the earth's climate is human activity. Industrialization, deforestation, the burning of fossil fuels, and the increase in the use of automobiles are responsible for the severe and irreversible changes in the climate.

The climate of our planet is changing rapidly. We may not be able to stop the changes, but we can be smart about them.

( )31.According to the first paragraph, we can learn that ______.

A.not everyone agrees with the fact that the climate is changing

B.greenhouse gases are responsible for climate change

C.climate change affects animals and plants much more than humans

D.it's bad for people to feel the rapid change in climate

( )32.The underlined word “minuscule” in the first paragraph probably means ________.

A.big B.small

C.serious D.dangerous

( )33.According to the author, global warming began with ________.

A.climate change B.volcanic eruptions

C.human activity D.solar change

( )34.Which of the following is NOT a reason for the climate change according to the passage?

A.Things released by volcanoes.

B.The way the earth goes around the sun.

C.Increased waste from families.

D.Increased use of cars

( )35.The passage mainly talks about________.

A.global warming

B.solar change

C.some reasons for climate change

D.natural processes that cause natural changes

“All American literature comes from one book called The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” Hemingway declared.

At the start of the story, Huck goes on a journey to escape from his rough family life. With nowhere to go, he hides on Jackson's Island, where he meets Jim, a runaway slave. At first, Huck is uncertain about Jim because of his ethnic background and what it stands for at the time. Despite their differences, the two decide to team up and float their way to the United States. Huck continues to battle with the idea that he is breaking the law by hiding a black slave.

Regardless of Huck's feelings, towards the end of the book there is an unspoken change in Huck and Jim. During the journey, they let their friendship grow.

In conclusion, as Huck and Jim go on a sad, but exciting journey together they are bonded as one because they overcome the difficulties and burdens that society has placed on them. By ignoring their differences they can get to know the true person within and form a friendship. Through the book, the two demonstrate that people of different ethnic backgrounds should be treated equally.

This story highlights not only human nature and our habits, but also the ability to conform(顺从). The story also stresses how being unique is sometimes difficult to be accepted, even when it is for the improvement of society.

Real life examples of this are Segregation Laws, slavery, varying rights between men and women, the conflict between the Germans and the Jews, and also between the Christians and people of other religions. This has been a dilemma throughout the ages. There is no doubt that by overcoming ethnic diversity and pressure from humanity, both Huck and Jim change a lot through the course of the book: from disliking each other to being friends. The next time you start to judge someone based on their appearance, their attitude or whatever it may be, remember Huck and Jim, and maybe you'll let their story influence yours.

( )36.Which of the following can be learned from the passage?

A.Hemingway didn't think highly of the book.

B.Huck helps to hide Jim without hesitation at first.

C.Huck has a happy life before the journey.

D.Huck and Jim get to know each other during the journey.

( )37.The followings are all reasons that Huck and Jim can become good friends, EXCEPT that ________.

A.they have their own ways of living

B.they experience an exciting journey together

C.they overcome lots of difficulties together

D.they neglect the ethnic differences between them

( )38.The underlined word “highlights” in the fifth paragraph can be replaced by “________”.

A.cares B.judges

C.emphasises D.explains

( )39.The author lists Segregation Laws and slavery in order to show that ________.

A.they promote the progress of society

B.conflicts in the world will never be ended

C.the problems of ethnic diversity exist in many parts of the world

D.the problems of ethnic diversity should be removed

( )40.What's the main purpose of the author?

A.To criticize the novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

B.To analyse human nature and our strange habits.

C.To encourage us to develop true friendship with others.

D.To tell us not to judge someone by his ethnic background.

There were smiling children all the way.Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penage.Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia.I was moved.

Almost a third of the students choose to travel and do sports to refresh themselves and relax, while nearly the same percentage of students prefer to enrich their knowledge to prepare for college life.20% of the students plan to master certain skills, such as driving, thereby improving their life skills. Another 15% of the students will find a job during the summer holidays to gain social experience. What a discount

The text is mainly about one of Mrs.Edwards’experiences of getting involved in the sale pushing activity of a new supermarket.Instead of getting a lot of things for free as she had expected, she got only a small item for free unexpectedly.Words like “discount” never fail to appeal to people, especially women though they might not need what is being promoted.Several days before Christmas,my mom went shopping with no clear idea of what she needed to buy. However, when told that coupons worth ¥50 for each hundred you paid were offered,my mom decided to buy a pair of pants whose price tag said ¥780.With the ¥350 coupons,my mom got some other things and got back home, very pleased.A few days later, however,my mom angrily told me that she was cheated for that pair of pants which was sold for only ¥280 now. What a discount!

如:suggest(建议), insist(坚持要求),demand(要求)、ask(请求)等后接的宾语从句中都 要用虚拟语气。善于归纳近义词、同义词,如:在复习join的用法时,能够联系join in,take part in,join sb in归纳复习之后,要做 对应练习。

Travellers to developing countries should start with long-term basic health protection. This means vaccinations(疫苗接种) against polio, tetanus and hepatitis A. Other vaccinations will depend on where you are going, local conditions and your possible environment. Visitors to Yellow Fever areas such as West Africa should certainly be vaccinated against it. Check links for the latest news and don't forget your travel insurance. It's really worth the money. Water: In developing countries avoid drinking or even brushing your teeth with tap water. Drink bottled water and check that the cap is well sealed(封闭) when you buy it. Turning it upside down and watching for drops is one method of checking. If you can't buy it, purify it by boiling. Do not take ice in your drinks, unless it is frozen mineral water. Tea, coffee, and soft drinks are fine from the bacteria point of view, though not so fine from a thirst point of view. Don't share water bottles with other travellers unless you want to share their bacteria too. Water filters (过滤器) are OK in theory but can break easily and usually don't filter some serious bacteria, such as hepatitis A and E. Force yourself to drink clean water, lots of it, if you want to avoid headaches and tiredness from a thirst. Water requirements at home are 6 glasses per day, so increase that figure by at least 3 times in tropical environment. Food: Avoid ice cream from unhealthy sources, raw fish, salad and uncooked food — unless you can peel it yourself. Most cases of diseases come from unclean food, not unclean water. Eat where it's busy. This means that the food is good or cheap or safe to eat! 1.When you plan to travel to developing countries you should first ________. A.choose countries where you will feel it convenient to travel B.make a good preparation to avoid being harmed or injured C.consider taking as much healthy food and clean water as possible D.check links for the latest news and buy your travel insurance

I shall never forget the day when the earthquake took place. The time was about 5 o’clock in the afternoon and I was driving along the road to take my daughter from school. Our plan was to go swimming together.I had finished my work at 4 o’clock and then gone to the Post Office. Then I stopped off at a shop in order to get some fresh fruit. We liked to have some fruit to eat after our swim. I was driving along a high road on my way to my daughter’s school.Over my road was another road which was built like a bridge for cars coming to the other way.I was hungry so I put the bag of apples in the seat beside me and started to eat one. Suddenly I saw the cars in front of me start to move from side to side. Then my car started to shake!I didn’t know what was happening.Perhaps something had gone wrong with my car.I drove a little more slowly and then I stopped the car and at the same moment the road fell onto the car in front of me. I found myself in the dark.I couldn’t move. The bottom parts of both of my legs and my feet were hurting badly and I couldn’t move them. All around me was quiet. But above me I could hear shouts and a lot of noise. Then I memorized (记起) what had happened.I had been in an earthquake. For about two hours nobody came.Luckily I could reach the bag of apples,so at least I had plenty to eat. Then I heard people climbing towards me.A team of people had come to see if anyone was under the broken road.I called out,“I’m here!” I heard a shout.Soon a stranger climbed to the side of the road near my car.“How are you doing?” he asked.

1.From talking robots and video phones to rovers on Mars, technology has become so advanced that the previously impossible seems to occur on a daily basis. And yet – we still have no cure for the common cold. Why can’t we st op the common cold? According to Peter Barlow, a scientist at Edinburgh Napier University in the UK, the main challenge lies in the many different types of cold viruses that are produced by the rhinoviruses (鼻病毒). There are at least 160 types. They mutate (突变) so easily that they quickly become resistant to drugs, or learn to hide from our immune systems. In other words, a single cure isn’t likely to work on every type of cold. However, researchers from Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco, have found a possible answer. They discovered a protein that the viruses need. Without it, they can’t spread inside your body. To identify the gene which produces the specific protein needed by the viruses, researchers used a gene-editing technique to test all genes in the human genome (基因组) one by one for thousands of cells. These modified (改变的) cells were then exposed to a range of enteroviruses(肠病毒), including the rhinoviruses which cause the common cold. All the viruses were unable to replicate (复制) inside cells without a gene that produces a specific protein, called methyltransferase SETD3. Then, they tested genetically modified mice, which were completely unable to produce the protein. The mice were able to live healthy, normal lives wit hout the protein. “Lacking that gene protected the mice completely from viral infection.” associate professor Jan Carette, from Stanford, told the BBC. “These mice would always die, but they survived and we saw a very strong reduction in viral replication and very strong protection.” Carette said the plan is to find a drug which can temporarily suppress (抑制) the protein, instead of producing genetically modified humans. “We have identified a fantastic target that all enteroviruses and rhinoviruses require and depend on. Take that away and the virus really has no chance.” said Carette. “This is a really good first step – the second step is to have a chemical that mimics (模拟) this genetic deletion.” he added.
