Abstract:Love is a Fallacy is Max Shulman’s short novel and his representative work. Shulman is an American writer, whose writing is famous for humous style. And his writing often focuses on young people, particularly in a collegiate setting, including Love is a Fallacy.Shulman is probably best remembered for his creation of the character“Dobie Gillis”, a typical American teen who frequently suffers from ramantic angst. Love is a Fallacy is a story that lets us know not whether to laugh or cry. Its charm lies in a fine sense of humour and irony, having lifelike characters, and having relaxed and vivid style of writing. Shulman narrates a emotional entanglement just resulting from a raccon coat among three young university students. Enclosing this entanglement, Shulman presents one by one their emotional orientation and value judgement. The author describes Dobie gets pretty but stupid girlfriend in change of raccon coat. In order to cultivate her to be a qualified wife, Dobie teaches her logic painstakingly, but finally she refuses him in use of the logic she has learned. The reason is that she has agreed to be girlfriend of Dobie’s roommate, because “He’s got a raccoon coat.”This paper tries to analyse this short story through the employment of critical approach to literature-formalistic approach.

Key W ords: irony, love, formalistic approach

The formalistic critic deals with irony and paradox, with the tensions that result from multiple interactions within the organic from of the literary piece. By these

principles,in evidence,Love is a Fallacy is an excellent example. First, the title sets us going. “Love is a Fallacy”in itself reveals the tone of the author-irony and humorous. How can love be a fallacy? It is well-known that love is the greatest refreshment in life, and love is like a butterfly, it goes where it pleases and it pleases where it goes. It is difficult for us to connect love with fallacy. The author’s novel view of love to some extent reflects his irony to Dobie’s view of love. What’s more, fallacies in the novel are what Dobie teaches to Polly, in the end, Polly uses the fallacies to resuses Dobie, which for Dobie is a bolt from the blue. From this angle, the author satirizes Dobie’s unappropriate attitude to love. Besides, the title has two meanings. When fallacy is taken in its ordinary sense, the title means: There is a deceptive or quality about love. When it is taken as a specific term in logic, the title means: Love cannot be deduced from a set of given premises. Love is an error, a deception and an emotion that does not follow the principles of logic.”All these can give powerful evidence.

Second, from the body of the novel, apparently, the author employs the formalistic approach to analyse the characters. The whole story is abound in satire and irony. It is satirizing a smug, self-conceited freshman Dobie in a law school. Dobie is made the narrator of the story who goes on smugly boasting and singing pra ises of himself at every chance he could get. From the very beginning in paragraph 4, he starts to keep on himself all the beautiful words of praise he could think of, such as “cool, logical, keen, calculating, perspicacious, cute and astute.” At the same time, he takes every opportunity to downgrade Petey. He considers Petey “dumb as an ox”. He

calls Petey “nothing upstairs”, “emotional”, “unstable”, and “a faddist”. And as for Polly, she is “a beautiful dumb girl”, who would smarten up under his guidance. It proves to be a big irony for Dobie when the dumb girl goes back to her former dumb boyfriend Petey, just because the latter has a raccoon coat. And the author wants to show that logic may be an interesting subject, “far from being a dry, pedantic subject, is a living, breathing thing, full of beaty, passion and trauma ”. He is exxaggerating for the sake of humor. The author uses a whole variety of writing techniqes to make his story vivid, dramatic and colorful, so then, it has an effect of irony and humor. The lexical spectrum is colorful from the ultra learned terms used by the conceited Dobie to the infra clipped vulgar forms of Polly. He uses figurative language profusely and also grammatical inversion for special emphasis. For example, “First he looked at the coat with the expression with of a waif at a bakery window ”, and “Cool was I and logical”. These add to the tone and the intention of the athor. The author also deliberately makes Polly use a lot of exclamatory words like “Gee”, “Oo”, “wow-wow” and clipped vulgar forms like “relish”, “marvy” to create a character of simple and rather stupid girl. This contrasts strongly with the boasting of the author and thus helps to increase the force of satire and irony.

Finally, the unexpected ending is forceful. In our opinion, Dobie teaches Polly logic, in return, Polly would naturally accept Dobie’s love. However, Polly chooses Petey, for the reason that he has a raccoon coat. It is ironic because the whole thing backfires on Dobie when Polly refuses all his arguments as logical fallacies before finally rejecting him. The end of the story finds that Dobie has got what he deserves.

He has been too clever for his own good. It proves to be a big irony for Dobie, and a tragedy. He has made great effort, while he achieves nothing at last. His fancy himself clever reaps the fruits of his action. As for Petey, he not only gets the raccoon coat, but gains the love of Polly. Although it is a humorous story, full of irony, it is worthy of our deeply thinking when facing with love. By Dobie’s tragic ending, we can conclude that love is a fallacy and can not be got by every means. Love is not on the premise of change. And nobody can prognosis the result of love. When someone wants to control love with full confidence, actually, he has already been a failure. Therefore, this paper tries to use the formalistic approach to analyse the story, particularly irony and humorous voice to deeply understand the internal meaning of the novel and the intention of the author.

love is a fallacy英文赏析

The story was set in one of the Universities in the United States of America. Dobie, according to his own assessment, is a cool, logical, keen, calculating, perspicacious, acute and astute guy who wanted to have a girl named Polly. Polly was a beautiful, gracious, intelligent girl. Polly by then was dating the main character's roommate Petey. Petey was eager to have a raccoon coat so that he can be in the swim as the Big Men in campus. Dobie wanted to exchange the girl by giving him a raccoon coat. The narrator’s tone was humorous in the later story when he was hanging out with Polly and he thought he was excellent enough to date with Polly. Rather than being nothing upstairs and emotional type just like Petey, he taught Polly 8 logic fallacies in order to make her smart. However, it is a satire that the girl turn down Dobie’s request of being his girlfriend with the logical statement Dobie taught her. And it is also a satire that Polly finally received Petey’s love just because he had a raccoon coat. The love relationship between the three characters is actually a fallacy itself. Dobie thought love was only to be a perfect guy so as to deserve a perfect girlfriend. After his great endeavor to perfect Polly to have a logic thinking, Polly got her acknowledge of love, that is follow her own desire. Petey thought he lost his lover when he accept Dobie’s raccoon coat, however, he was the last one to own Polly as he had a raccoon coat. All the three were given the result they hadn’t expected at first. In my opinion, the funny story was exiting due to the wrong personal

love is a fallacy故事后续

…… “What? No!” The angriness was full of my mind. I had to tell Polly the fact that what kind of person Petey is. I explained peacefully, “The raccoon coat is not his. I lent him a few days ago when I found him lying on his bed with an expression of such distress on his face. He was dying to have a raccoon coat.” He treated me like that, which led me treat him the same way. “How can he consider the coat as his? Um…Maybe we can meet together tomorrow afternoon and figure all things out. How do you think?” “Okay! It sounds that what you said seems right. But, now, I don’t believe you! So, see you tomorrow.” Polly said, after some hesitation. When I got back to my room, Petey was reading a fashion magazine. “What did you do, Petey? Why did Polly say that she would go steady with you? Can you tell me what’s going on right now?” I just grabbed his magazine, and yelled to him. “Hey, buddy! Don’t be like this. Listen to me. Here is the thing: this afternoon, I came across Polly in my raccoon. I said hello to her. I thought she fell in love with me, after we talked a lot, and so did I. You know, she is so adorable, charming and intelligent. So, I cannot be happy without her, and the deal is not a deal now. Sorry!”And he passed me the raccoon coat. “Owning a pretty girlfriend is also popular, which is better than owning a raccoon coat.” “Ok! Polly wants to see you tomorrow afternoon. You will know she is in love with the raccoon coat instead of you. ” “That’s impossible! I believe that I am the one she loves.” He said seriously. The next afternoon coming, we three all arrived at the place on time. “Petey, why don’t you wear your raccoon coat. You should look very good in the raccoon coat.” Polly stood very close to Petey. “Oh, Polly, I have something to tell you. The raccoon coat is not mine. I borrowed it from Dobie a few days ago. I thought I looked cool in the coat. I was wrong. I realized I don’t need a raccoon coat to let me look cool now, for I have you now. This let me look so cool!” “But if you don’t have a raccoon coat, I will not be with you. With a raccoon coat, you are in fashion, but you don’t have one. I love fashion. So I will not go steady with you.” Polly said disappointedly, and left Petey decisively. Suddenly, I recognized that what a stupid thing I am doing! I don’t want this Polly-style person to be my wife. Then, I accompanied Petey back to our room, telling him that love is a fallacy all the way. And the raccoon coat was back its home, too (in a trunk in the attic back home).

love is a fallacy

Love is a Fallacy Max Shulman 1 Charles Lamb, as merry and enterprising a fellow as you will meet in a month of Sundays, unfettered the informal essay with his memorable Old China and Dream's Children. There follows an informal essay that ventures even beyond Lamb's frontier, indeed, "informal" may not be quite the right word to describe this essay; "limp" or " flaccid" or possibly "spongy" are perhaps more appropriate. 2 Vague though its category, it is without doubt an essay. It develops an argument; it cites instances; it reaches a conclusion. Could Carlyle do more? Could Ruskin ? 3 Read, then, the following essay which undertakes to demonstrate that logic, far from being a dry, pedantic discipline, is a living, breathing thing, full of beauty, passion, and trauma --Author's Note 4 Cool was I and logical. Keen, calculating, perspicacious, acute and astute--I was all of these. My brain was as powerful as a dynamo, as precise as a chemist's scales, as penetrating as a scalpel. And--think of it! --I was only eighteen. 5 It is not often that one so young has such a giant intellect. Take, for example, Petey Butch, my roommate at the University of Minnesota. Same age, same background, but dumb as an ox. A nice enough young fellow, you understand, but nothing upstairs. Emotional type. Unstable. Impressionable. Worst of all, a faddist. Fads, I submit, are the very negation of reason. To be swept up in every new craze that comes along, to surrender yourself to idiocy just because everybody else is doing it--this, to me, is the acme of mindlessness. Not, however, to Petey. 6 One afternoon I found Petey lying on his bed with an expression of such distress on his face that I immediately diagnosed appendicitis. "Don't move," I said. "Don't take a laxative. I'll get a doctor." 7 "Raccoon," he mumbled thickly. 8 "Raccoon?" I said, pausing in my flight. 9 "1 want a raccoon coat," he wailed. 10 I perceived that his trouble was not physical, but mental. "Why do you want a raccoon coat?" 11 "1 should have known it," he cried, pounding his temples. "1 should have known they'd come back when the Charleston came back. Like a fool I spent all my money for textbooks, and now I can't get a raccoon coat." 12 "Can you mean." I said incredulously, "that people are actually wearing raccoon coats again?" 13 "All the Big Men on Campus are wearing them. Where've you been?" 14 "In the library," I said, naming a place not frequented by Big Men on Campus

姓名:王昭君 班级:英师本1106班 学号:20111411105 Love is a fallacy In the text, the author thinks that love is a thing that could be used for changing of the materials. In his mind, he just wants to marry a girl who is useful and suitable to his future. He makes a deal with his roommate by using the racoon coat to change for his girlfriend Polly. He simplifies the true meaning of love. He treats it as a deal or a changing of material which is the biggest mistake that he makes. In my point of view, love is the mutual appealing of the two people in their inner heart. It could not buy or change by anything. Love is the feeling that one wants to stay with another. It’s a feeling which beyond our description. Its the willing that one wants to take care of another. The deepest love is the appealing of the two people’s life, the staying together of the two people’s soul. In my mind, my Mr. Right should give me enough respect. He must have his own entrepreneur spirit in his life. The most important thing is that he must be concentrate on our love and be responsible for it.
