People who are happy tent to think that life is easy. They are in good physical health and able to buy the things that they need and want. Happiness is about satisfying our needs and desires. The pursuit(追求) of happiness is often associated with selfish behavior. Animals have needs and desires and they can feel happy too. What sets human beings apart form animals is not the pursuit of happiness, but the pursuit of meaning, which is unique to humans. We can often find meaning in helping others or marking a sacrifice( 牺牲) for a “greater good”. Meaning often comes at the expense of happiness. When people have invested themselves in something bigger than themselves, they worry more and have higher levels of stress and anxiety in their lives than happy people. Volunteering ( 做义工) in rural schools, for example, is meaningful but also involves hardship.Happiness, like any emotion, is felt in the here and now --it eventually fades away .However, meaning is enduring. It connects the past to the present to the future.46.What is the main idea if the passage ?A. A happy life is basically different form a meaningful life.B. Researchers have revealed that night owls(夜猫子) are generally brighter and wealthier than able to get up early in the morning.Experts examined the habits of 1,000 youngsters to determine whether they liked to stay up late and sleep in later in the morning, or preferred to go to bed early. School performance and inductive(归纳的) reasoning were measured and academic (学业的) ades in the major subjects were also taken into consideration. The results show that evening types score higher than morning types on inductive reason in which has been shown to be a good estimate of general intelligence and academic performance .The night owls also have a greater capacity to think conceptually (概念性地) and analyze. Such abilities have been linked to creative thinking, better jobs and higher incomes.Morning larks, however, often get better exam results in school, possibly because lessons are held at wrong time of day for night owls.51. 2013年浙江专升本(英语)真题试卷(题后含答案及解析)全部题型 2. Reading Comprehension 3. Cloze 5. Translation 6. WritingReading ComprehensionA quality education is the ultimate liberator. It can free people form poverty, giving them the power to greatly improve their lives and take a productive place in society. It can also free communities and countries, allowing them to leap forward into periods of wealth and social unity that otherwise would not be possible. For this reason, the international community has committed itself to getting all the world’s children into primary school by 2015, a commitment known as Education for All. Can Education for All be achieved by 2015? The answer is definitely”yes” , although it is a difficult task. If we now measure the goal in terms of children successfully completing a minimum of five years of primary school, instead of just enrolling for classes, which used to be the measuring stick for education, the challenge will become even more difficult. Only 32 countries were formerly believed to be at risk of not achieving education for all on the basis of enrollment rates. The number rises to 88 if completion rates are used as the standard. Still, the goal is achievable with the right policies and the right support from the international community. 59 of the 88 countries at risk can reach universal primary completion by 2015 if they bring the efficiency and quality of their education systems into line with standards observed in higher-performing systems. They also need significant increases in external(外部的)financing and technical support. The 29 countries lagging(落后)farthest behind will not reach the goal without unprecedented(空前的)rates of progress. But this is attainable with creative solutions, including the use of information technologies, flexible and targeted foreign aid, and fewer people living in poverty. A key lesson of experience about what makes development effective is that a country’s capacity to use aid well depends heavily on its policies, institutions and management. Where a country scores well on these standards, foreign assistance can be highly effective.1.It can be inferred from the passage that a quality education has the function of______.A.helping a country free from foreign ruleB.making people become wealthyC.giving people more power and freedomD.speeding up the progress of society正确答案:B解析:推断题。

江苏省2013年普通高校专转本考试真题Part I Reading Comprehension (共20小题,每小题2分,共40分)Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. When Mrs. Joseph Groeger died recently in Vienna, Austria, people asked the obvious question. “W hy did she live to be 107?” Answers were provided by a survey conducted among 148 Viennese men and women who had reached the age of 100. What was surprising was that the majority had lived most of their lives in cities. Although cities are often regarded as unhealthy places, city living provides benefits that country living may lack. One factor seems to be important to the longevity(长寿) of those interviewed. This factor is exercise. In the cities it is often faster to walk short distances than to wait for a bus. Even taking public transportation often requires some walking. Smaller apartment houses have no elevators, and so people must climb stairs. City people can usually walk to local supermarkets. Since parking spaces are hard to find, there is often no choice but to walk.On the other hand, those who live in the country and suburbs do not have to walk every day. In fact, the opposite is often true. To go to school, work, or almost anywhere else, they must ride in cars.1.The Vienna survey may help to explain __________.A.the complaints of people in apartment housesB.the causes of Mrs. Groeger’s deathC.the longevity of people like Mrs. GroegerD.the image of cities in general2.The second paragraph lists some ___________.A.disadvantage of walkingB.occasions for walking in city lifeC.problems of city livingments made by city people3.To reach the third floor of a building, it would probably be most healthful ___________.A.to take the elevatorB.to walk up the stairsC.to ride in a carD.to find an alternative walking4.People who live in the country usually do more driving than walking because ___________.A.they don’t live near business areasB.they don’t need exerciseC.they don’t like walkingD.they can’t afford to take the bus5.We can draw a conclusion from this passage that _________.A.air pollution is not seriousB.anyone can live to be 107C.country people should move to citiesD.walking is a healthful exercisePassage TwoQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. The Bedouin people, a tribe living in the deserts of Arabia and Northern African, think most highly of people who show loyalty. To them loyalty does not mean that one is devoted to a country, a place, or a leader. Loyalty means being faithful to one’s family and tribe. The Bedouin people are proud of their ancestors(祖先). They do not admire a hero from an ordinary or poor family as much as one who comes from an honored family. They especially respect those who have inherited(继承) a good family name and then have passed it on to their children.A man’s position among his people depends upon his ancestors, relatives, and fellow tribesmen. If they are honored, he is also honored. If they are disagreed, he, too, is disgraced. Therefore, one carefully guards the honor of his family and his tribe.A man can protect his family’s honors by being brave and generous and by giving protection to those who ask for it. He also guards it by carefully watching the women of his family.A Bedouin woman cannot bring honor to her family, but she can bring disgrace. Even if a woman only looks as if she has done something wrong, she may be killed. The honor of her family depends upon her virtue(美德).6. The best title for this passage can be __________.A. They used no illustrations (插图) and the articles were about politics or business. Two men changed that---Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World and William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal. Pulitzer bought the New York World in 1883. He changed it from a traditional newspaper into a very exciting one overnight. He added lots of illustrations and he told his reporters to write articles on every crime they could find. And they did. One woman reporter even pretended she was mad and was sent to a hospital. She then wrote many articles about the poor treatment of patients in those hospitals where madmen were kept. In 1895, Hearst came to New York from California. He wanted the Journal to be more exciting than the World. He also wanted it to be cheaper, so he lowered the price by a penny. Hearst attracted attention because his newspaper heading were bigger than any one else’s. He often said, “Big print makes big news.”Pulitzer and Hearst did anything they could to sell newspaper. No other number system ever invented has a simple way to write a number like 1984. In Roman numeral, it comes out like this MCMLXXXIV. Imagine how difficult it would be for a school pupil to remember it!The Arabs, however, call their numbers “Indian numerals”. This is probably because they got the original idea a long time ago from India. There were no printed newspapers or scientific magazine then, so mathematics traveled along the same routes that silk did, as businessmen sold and bought goods. The Arabs took the new numbers and made improvements that quickly led to advances in technology. The achievement of Arabic technology can be seen from a passage in a 10th-century book about an Arabic city:” The neighboring country showed the results of careful work in agriculture, trade, and industry. Rice and many other plants were grown in fields with water supplied by Arab engineers. The city included 900 public baths, stone-covered streets, fountains, and beautiful buildings.” At this time, London was a small town with dirty streets, and Berlin was a farming village. In fact, cities outside the Arab world did not reach the same level of social development until centuries later.16. Perhaps you should try a Segway! The Segway is perfect for short journey. It´s an electric vehicle that consists of a platform between two wheels, with a pole that connects the platform to the handlebars. To ride it,you step up onto the platform, and control the Segway by moving your body. Lean forwards to go faster, and backwards to slow down.On older models, direction is controlled by a twist grip(扭转把手)on the left handlebar. This varies the speeds between the two motors, a decrease in the speed of the left wheel would turn the Segway to the left. With newer models you simply lean to the left or right. Meanwhile, a gyroscope(陀螺仪)detects your movements and prevents the machine from falling over. The Segway has a maximum speed of 19 km per hour and a range of about 38 km. After that, you need to plug it in and recharge the battery.Segways are used for a variety of purposes. People with mobility problems can now enjoy walks in the country with their friends and family. Some golfers use them as an alternative to the golf cart. And dog owners now have an easier way to take the dog to the park. A few police forcesuse Seg-ways,too. They allow officers to move quickly whilst maintaining contact with the public. They´ re also becoming a common sight on airport. However, the most popular use is in tourism, particularly for city tours. Visit any major tourist city in summer, sit outside a cafe for a while and there´ s a good chance you’ll see a group of tourists passing on Segways.第21题What is the Segway according to this passage?A.A pole that connects two handlebars.B.A newly appeared public traffic vehicle.C.A bicycle with a platform between two wheels.D.An electric two-wheeled vehicle for short trips.第22题How do you turn to the left on Segways of newer models?A.Lean to the left.B.Adjust the twist grip.C.Press the left bar.D.Control the gyroscope.第23题How far can you travel on a Segway at most?A.Less than 19 km.B.About 19 km.C.About 38 km.D.More than 38 km.第24题The last paragraph focuses on______.A.what a Segway is likeB.where to find a SegwayC.how to control a SegwayD.when a Segway is useful上一题下一题(25~28/共20题)Part ⅢReading ComprehensionDirections:There are some reading passages in this part. Today was the day that they had enough money in hand to make a down payment on the house. But the real estate(房地产)agent informed them that she had received another offer for the house. Although the other offer was slightly less than that of Nancy and John´s, that person with the new offer was willing to pay the whole amount at once. The owner,in urgent need of money, wanted to accept the second offer.Nancy and John looked at each other with disappointed looks. They walked back home feeling very low about having lost the house. Soon they recovered and involved themselves into their daily lives, though once in a while Nancy would sink into a mild depression over losing the house. One day Nancy woke up in the morning feeling even lower than usual. She kept feeling sick, even lost interest in her routine coffee. She put all these symptoms down to the stress of working hard and losing her dream house. A week passed and she seemed to get worse. John was worried and insisted on taking her to the doctor. The doctor, after taking a few tests, informed them with a huge smile that Nancy was two months pregnant! John and Nancy were overjoyed but also worried about not having their own house before the baby was born. One evening Nancy wandered into the street where her dream house was,and as she passed by it,she was surprised to see that there were notices stuck on all the houses. On closer examination she found that the notices were for all the residents to move out of the houses as they were building a highway and the whole row of houses needed to be pulled down. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked [A]、[B]、[C] and [D]. Choose one best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet. Most of the guests who come on our trips have never been to Egypt before. We want to make everyone comfortable and at ease, but we do always get the same questions in advance of a trip.So here I will give you some travel tips. What should I wear?If you´ re lucky enough to visit Egypt between November and February, pack a sweater. You’ll need it—the desert gets chilly at night. During the day, the temperature will be agreeable and comfortable. Any other time, pack as if you´re going to Phoenix or Vegas in August. For the ladies, bathing suits are normal if there´ s a pool where you ´ re going, but leave the string bikini at home—it is a Muslim country, after all. Last,if you are planning on visiting any mosques or certain parts of upper Egypt, ladies will need to plan on bringing something that comes at least to the elbow, and no shorts for men or women in those areas. What special things do I need to pack? One of my favorite things in the world to bring to Egypt is an Evian Mister, a sprayer with a fine mist of Evian water. You may be able to find it in your local drug store. Spray a little on your face or head, and your body temperature will feel like it´s dropped 10 or 15 degrees. Other items include your camera, sun block and extra batteries. How do I communicate with home?Internet cafes are plentiful everywhere, especially in Cairo, Luxor, and Alexandria. If you have international calling on your phone, you should be able to use it—AT&T and Sprint both work internationally for sure, but make sure you have the international coverage. A satellite phone is best if you are certain to need coverage in the middle of the country, like while sailing up the Nile, but for most people these days a cell phone is fine. What medical preparation do I need?In a word: none! The one thing you may come down with in Egypt is politely called " Pharoah´s Revenge". The thing that knocks out Pharoah´ s Revenge is a regionally produced medicine, and is available at every drugstore for $1 a box. DON´T drink local water,DO drink bottled water, avoid the skins of fresh vegetables, and you’ll be fine.第29题What clothing is proper for ladies visiting a mosque?A.String bikinis.B.Long-sleeve clothes.C.Bathing suits.D.Shorts.第30题What´ s the use of an Evian Mister?A.To relieve your thirst.B.To prevent sunburns.C.To cool yourself down.D.To drive away insects.第31题What information is provided about distance communication?A.A cell phone is enough for most people.B.AT&T and Sprint offer free service in Egypt.C.A satellite phone doesn´ t work in Mid-Egypt.D.Internet cafes are only available in big cities.第32题What does "Pharoah´ s Revenge" probably refer to in the last paragraph?A.A curse.B.A legend.C.A disease.D.A vegetable.上一题下一题(33~36/共20题)Part ⅢReading ComprehensionDirections:There are some reading passages in this part. The weather was perfect for a picnic,so when lunch time came,we set our sights on a small park in town. Since we all had different tastes,we decided to split up,get what each of us wanted, and meet back on the grass in a few minutes. When my friends Robby headed for a hot dog stand, I decided to keep her company. We watched the seller put together the perfect hot dog, just the way Robby wanted it. But when she took out her money to pay him,the man surprised us."It looks a bit smaller on the cool side, "he said, "so never mind paying me. This will be my freebie of the day. "We said our thanks, joined our friends in the park, and dug into our food. But as we talked and ate,I noticed a man sitting alone nearby, looking at us. I could tell that he hadn´ t showered for days. Another homeless person,I thought, like all the others you see in cities. I didn´ t pay much more attention than that.We finished eating and decided to head -off for more sightseeing. But when Robby and I went to the garbage can to throw away my lunch bag, I heard a strong voice, " There isn´ t any food in that bag,is there?"It was the man who had been watching us. I didn´ t know what to say. "No,I ate it already. " "Oh,"was his only answer, with no shame in his voice at all. He was obviously hungry, couldn´ t bear to see anything thrown away, and was used to asking this question.I felt bad for the man,but I didn´t know what I could do. That´ s when Robby said, "I’ll be right back. Please wait for me a minute," and ran off. I watched curiously as she went across to the hot dog stand. Then I realized what she was doing. She bought a hot dog, crossed back to the garbage can,and gave the hungry man the food. When she came back to us, Robby said simply," I was just passing on the kindness that someone gave to me. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked [A]、[B]、[C] and [D]. Choose one best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet.Whatever you do,don´t challenge a chimpanzee named Ayumu to a number memory game.In 2007, Ayumu became famous for his lightning speed at a game that goes like this: A player views a computer screen where the numbers 1 through 9 appear briefly at once and then turn to white squares. The player then taps the squares where the numbers had been,in order from 1 to 9. People can do it. But no human competitor has ever completed the game faster or more accurately than Ayumu the chimp. For almost five years Ayumu remains undefeated.Psychologist Nicholas Humphrey of Darwin College at Cambridge University in England now thinks he knows the secret behind the chimp´ s ability. Humphrey suspects Ayumu´ s brain may have a condition that allows the chimp to see numbers as colors. This would mean that Ayumu may see a color glow after the number disappears. Then, instead of remembering the numbers,he remembers a sequence of colors, each associated with a number. The condition that Humphrey believes Ayumu may have is called synesthesia. Humans with synesthesia may associate numbers and letters with colors. For example,a person may see the number "5"as the color blue. Until now, scientists had assumed only humans could have synesthesia.Humphrey found the inspiration for his idea at a 2011 scientific conference. There, he heard a presentation about Ayumu´ s memory abilities and another talk about synesthesia. He then put the two ideas together. Not everyone is convinced that Humphrey is correct. Primatologist Tetsuro Matsuzawa of the Primate Research Institute at Kyoto University in Japan has spent decades studying the amazing memories of chimpanzees, including Ayumu. He maintains that chimps simply have faster memory recall than people.第37题What is Ayumu famous for?A.His gift in playing computers.B.His talent in calculating numbers.C.His skill in tapping the numbered squares.D.His amazing performance in a memory game.第38题Which of the following is true of Nicholas Humphrey?A.He thinks Ayumu has an amazing memory.B.He believes that Ayumu sees the colors of numbers.C.He was inspired by Primatologist Tetsuro Matsuzawa.D.He delivered a speech on synesthesia at the 2011 conference.第39题Where does Humphrey get the inspiration for his idea?A.From an experiment.B.From a conference.C.From a research on chimpanzees.D.From the color blue.第40题How does Tetsuro Matsuzawa explain Ayumu´ s performance in the game?A.Ayumu uses synesthesia.B.Ayumu is cleverer than most chimps.C.Chimps recall things faster than people.D.Chimps are good at dealing with number.上一题下一题(41~55/共15题)Part IV ClozeDirections:For each blank in the following passage, there are four choices marked [A]、[B]、[C] and [D]. A great deal of communicating is performed on a person-to-person basis by the simple means of speech. If we travel in buses, buy things in shops, or eat in restaurants, we are likely to have conversations where we give information or opinions, receive news or comment, and very likely have our views challenged by other members of society.Face-to-face contact is by no means the only form of communication and during the last two hundred years the art of mass communication has become of one of the dominating factors of contemporary society. Two things, above others, have caused the enormous growth of the communication industry. Firstly, inventiveness has led to advances in printing, telecommunications, photography, radio and television. Secondly, speed has revolutionized the transmission and reception of communications so that local news often takes a back seat to national news, which itself is often almost eclipsed by international news.No longer is the possession of information confined to a privileged minority. In the last century the wealthy man with his own library was indeed fortunate, but today there are public libraries. Forty years ago people used to flock to the cinema, but now far more people sit at home and turn on the TV to watch a programme that is being channeled into millions of homes.Communication is no longer merely concerned with the transmission of information. The modern communication industry influences the way people live in society and broadens their horizons by allowing access to information, education and entertainment. The printing, broadcasting and advertising industries are all involved with informing, educating and entertaining.Although a great deal of the material communicated by the mass media is very valuable to the individual and to the society of which he is a part, the vast modern network of communications is open to abuse. However, the mass media are with us for better, for worse, and there is no turning back.1.In the first paragraph the writer emphasizes the _________ of face-to-face contact in social settings.A natureB limitationC usefulnessD creativity2. It is implied in the passage that_______A local news used to be the only source of informationB local news still takes a significant placeC national news is becoming more popularD international news is the fastest transmitted news3. which of the following statement is INCORRECT?A To possess information used to be a privilegeB Public libraries have replaced private librariesC Communication means more than transmissionD Information influences ways of life and thinking4.From the last paragraph we can infer that the writer is________.A indifferent to the harmful influence of the mass mediaB happy about the drastic changes in the mass mediaC pessimistic about the future of the mass mediaD concerned about the wrong use of the mass mediaPassage 2I am one of the many city people who are always saying that given the choice we would prefer to live in the country away from the dirt and noise of a large city. I have managed to convince myself that it weren’t for my job I would immediately head out for the open spaces and go back to nature in some sleepy village buried in the country. But how realistic is the dream?Cities can be frightening places. The majority of the population live in massive tower blocks, noisy, dirty and impersonal. The sense of belonging to a community tends to disappear when you live fifteen floors up. All you can see from your window is sky, or other blocks of flats. Children become aggressive and nervous—cooped up at home all day, with nowhere to play; their mothers feel isolated from the rest of the world. Strangely enough whereas in the past the inhabitants of one street all knew each other, nowadays people on the same floor in tower blocks don’t even say hello to each other.Country life, on the other hand, differs from this kind of isolated existence in that a sense of community generally binds the inhabitants of small villages together. People have the advantage of knowing that there is always someone to turn to when they need help. But country life has disadvantages too. While it is true that you may be among friends in a village, it is also true that you are cut off from the existing and important events that take place in cities. There’s little possibility of going to a new show or the latest movie. Shopping becomes a major problem, and for anything slightly out of the ordinary you have to go on and expedition to the nearest large town. The city-dweller who leaves for the country is often oppressed by a sense of unbearable stillness and quiet. What, then, is the answer? The country has the advantage of peace and quiet, but suffers from the disadvantage of being cut off; the city breeds a feeling of isolation, and constant noise batters the senses. But one of its main advantages is that you are at the center of things, and that life doesn’t come to an end at half-past nine at night. Some people have found (or rather bought) a compromise between the two; they have expressed their preference for the “quiet life” by leaving the suburbs and moving to villages within commuting distance of large cities. They generally have about as much sensitivity as the plastic flowers they leave behind —they are polluted with strange ideas about change and improvement which they force on to the unwilling original inhabitants of the villages. What then of my dreams of leaning on a cottage gate and murmuring “morning” to the locals as they passby? I’m keen on the idea, but you see there’s my cat, Toby, I’m not at all sure that he would take to all that fresh air and exercise in the long grass, I mean, can you see him mixing with all those hearty males down the farm? No, he would rather have the electric imitation-coal fire any evening.5.We get the impression from the first paragraph that the authorA used to live in the countryB used to work in the cityC works in the cityD lives in the country6. Education today is not just a high school diploma or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma.Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones.Scientists, mechanics and barbers can take classes to improve their work skills. If they know more or learn more, they can get a better job or earn more money.Continuing education classes give more adults the chances to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from: typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. These are only some of the classes available. Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves.Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings or churches. Most classes are in the evening, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive.10. Scientists believe that they may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged, and other problems may be solved if human cloning and its technology are not forbidden. With cloning, infertile couples could have children. Current treatments for infertility, in terms of percentages, are not very successfully. Couples go through physically and emotionally painful procedures for a small chance of having children. Many couples run out of time and money without successfully having children. Human cloning could make it possible for many more infertile couples to have children than ever before. We should be able to clone the bone marrow for children and adults suffering from leukemia. This is expected to be one of the first benefits to come from cloning technology. We may learn how to switch cells on and off through cloning and thus be able to cure cancer.Cloning technology can be used to test for and perhaps cure gene-related diseases. The above is just a few examples of what human cloning technology can do for mankind. This new technology promises unprecedented advancement in medicine if people will release their fears and let the benefits begin.15.Heart attacks can be treated with human cloning technology by___________.A removing the damaged part of the heartB replacing the old heart with a cloned oneC repairing the heart with cells cloned from healthy onesD giving the patients injections of various medicines16.
