A

The campaign is over. The celebrations have ended. And the work for US president-elect Barack Obama has begun.

The 47-year-old politician rose to the highest post because of his stand against the war in Iraq and his plans to fix a weak economy. But what will the first African-American president do for race relations?

Obama's victory appears to have given blacks and other minorities a true national role model. For years, many looked to athletes and musicians for inspiration. As Darius Turner, an African-American high school student in Los Angeles, told the Los Angeles Times, “Kobe doesn’t have to be everybody’s role model anymore. “

Recent polls (民意测验) also suggest that Obama’s victory has given Americans new optimism about race relations. For example, a USA Today poll found that two-thirds of Americans believe relations between bla cks and whites “will finally be worked out”. This is the most hopeful response since the question was first asked during the civil rights revolution in 1963.

However, it’s still too early to tell whether Obama’s presidency will begin to solve many of the social problems facing low-income black communities.

Although blacks make up only 13 percent of the US population, 55 percent of all prisoners are African-American. Such numbers can be blamed on a number of factors on America's racist past, a failure of government policy and the collapse of the family in black communities.

It is unlikely that Obama will be able to reverse such trends overnight. However, Bill Bank, an expert of African-American Studies, says that eventually young blacks need to find role models in their own communities. “That’s not Martin Luther King, and not Barack Obama ,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “It’s actually the people closest to them. Barack only has so much influence.”

In the opinion of black British politician Trevor Phillips, Obama's rise will contribute more to multiculturalism than to race relations in the US.

“When the G8 meets, the four most important people in the room will be the president of China, the prime minister of India, the prime minister of Japan and Barak Obam a,” he told London’s The Times newspaper. “It will be the first time we've seen that on our television screens. That will be a huge psychological change for both the white people and the colored one in the world.”

56. For years, before Obama is elected president of the US, ________________.

A. Kobe was the only role model for all the blacks

B. blacks could only find role models on the basketball court

C. people in America couldn't find role models in their real life

They wear the latest fashions with the most up-to-date accessories(配饰). Yet these are not girls in their teens or twenties but women in their sixties and seventies. A generation which would once only wear old-fashioned clothes is now favoring the same high street looks worn by those half their age.

Professor Julia Twigg, a social policy expert, said, “Women over 75 are now shopping for clothes more frequently than they did when they were young in the 1960s. In the 1960s buying a coat for a woman was a serious matter. It was an expensive item that they would purchase only every three or four years —now you can pick one up at the supermarket whenever you wish to. Fashion is a lot cheaper and people get tired of things more quickly.”

Professor Twigg analyzed family expending(支出)data and found that while the percentage of spending on clothes and shoes by women had stayed around the same —about 5 or 6 percent of spending —the amount of clothes bought had risen sharply.

The professor said, “Clothes are now 70 percent cheaper than they were in the 1960s because of the huge expansion of production in the Far East. In the 1960s Leeds was the heart of the British fashion industry and that was where most of the clothes came from, but now almost all of our clothes are sourced elsewhere. Everyone is buying more clothes but in general we are not spending more money on them.”

Fashion designer Angela Barnard, who runs her own fashion business in London, said older women were much more affected by celebrity (名流)style than in previous years.

She said, "When people see stars such as Judi Dench and Helen Mirren looking attractive and fashionable in their sixties, they want to follow them. Older women are much more aware of celebrities. There's also the boom in TV programmes showing people how they can change their look, and many of my older customers do yoga to stay in shape well in their fifties. When I started my business a few years ago, my older customers tended to be very rich, but now they are what I would call ordinary women. My own mother is 61 and she wears the latest fashions in a way she would never have done ten years ago. "

60.Professor Twigg found that, compared with the 1960s, ____________________.

Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics. But sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about oursel ves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you built a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.

Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world.

The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.

It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re sil ly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just becaus e you think it doesn’t mean it’s true.

The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat(拍)yourself on the back, you’ll know you’ re well on your way. Good luck!

69. How should you change your self-image according to the passage?

A. To keep a different image of others.

B. To make your life successful.

C. To understand your own world.

D. To change the way you think.

70. Who are the intended readers of the passage?

A. Parents.

B. Teenagers.

C. Educators.

D. People in general.

e.g. 22, Peter _____ be really difficult at times even though he’s a nice person in general. A, shall B. should C. can D. must 近几年高考,考查情态动词侧重在表示推测的用法及情态动词+ have done , (2007 辽宁) ―― Turn off the TV, Jack.____ your homework now?

―― Mum, just ten more minutes, please. A. should you be doing B. Shouldn’t you be doing C. couldn't you be doing D. will you be doing 答案:B 23 We first met on a train in 2000. We both felt immediately that we _______ each other for years. A. knew B. have known C. had known D. known 答案:C 29.―― Have you got any job offers? ―― No, I ______. A. waited B. had been waiting C. have waited D. am waiting 答案:D 31. Please remain ____; the winner of the prize will be announced soon. A. seating B. seated C. to seat D, to be seated

A A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops. Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility. But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught. Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased th e tendency to make notes ”mindlessly” by taking down word for word what the professors said. In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were examined on their ability and to remember facts and on how well they understood concept. The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those wrote by hand. However, the type is performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it comes to memorizing facts. The researchers’ report said, “ While more notes are beneficial, if the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears. In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam. These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future. 21. More and more students favor laptops for note-taking because they can___. A write more notes B digest concepts better C get higher scores D understand lectures better 22. While taking notes, laptops users tend to be___. A skillful B mindless C thoughtful D tireless 23. The author of the passage aims to ___. A examine the importance of long-term memory B stress the benefit of taking notes by hand C explain the process of taking notes D promote the use of laptops. 24. The passage is likely to appear in ___. A a newspaper advertisement B a computer textbook C a science magazine D a finance report

答案 A
