Aside from the health benefits of laughter (which are numerous and significant), having a sense of humor about life's difficulties can provide a way to bond with others, look at things in a different way, normalize your experience, and keep things from appearing too overwhelming or scary. Properly developed, a good sense of humor can keep people and relationships strong.

Studies show that having a smile on your face can make you feel better, and can lead you to actually feeling happier (rather than just looking happier). Even if the smile is fake, the benefits you will experience are real! Also, a fake smile leads readily to a genuine one. If you are able to put a smile on your face, the laughter will come more easily, and the stress will melt more easily. If your situation seems ridiculously frustrating, recognize what can develop into humor in just how ridiculously frustrating and annoying it is. In your imagination, take the situation to an extreme that becomes even more ridiculous until you find yourself amused. For example, when you're waiting in a long line at the store, you can imagine that hours pass, then days, visualizing yourself accepting visits from loved ones from your new home in this ultra-long line, holding your children's birthday parties in aisle seven so you can be there to enjoy them...you get the picture. Besides, find a friend with whom you can laugh also works! You can each share your frustrations, and laugh about them in the process. Even when your friend isn't there, you can feel less stressed by thinking about the retelling that will come later.

You can have a “most annoying boss” game with your friends, or try to count how many times the same potentially frustrating event happens in a day.(“I was cut off in traffic 7 times today—I'm almost up to 10!”) This works well for predictable or repetitive annoying situations that you can't control; you can begin to value them in their own special way instead of letting them upset you.

One of the factors that drive the popularity of shows like Modern Family or movies like the classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off, is that they take somewhat universal situations that many people find frustrating and push them a little further, pointing out the silliness of it all.

What's more, you can try joining Funny Clubs.Years ago, when Oprah had a show rather than a network, she did a part on Laughter Yoga that interested me, and I researched a club on my own, finding it to be a terrific place to enjoy a good laugh. Whether you mean business or laugh at the silliness of it all, taking part in the exercises of laughter yoga with other humor-participants can be a very effective way to get back in the practice of getting some more laughter into your day.

Every person has a history of pain and tragedy that includes regret from the situation. At times, it's often hard to explain that pain to someone else. The challenge with a tragedy is the lack of support from someone.

This has often been my challenge when I try to explain what occurred to me. When I was younger, I was a victim of a tragic accident that changed my life both academically and emotionally. At sixteen months old, due to the neglect of my babysitter I fell off the bed. The injury was so severe that I was rushed to the emergency room and the doctors explained to my mom that I suffered from a blood clot (血块) located on the left side of the brain.

I was later diagnosed with what is known as a traumatic brain injury (外伤性脑损伤).This accident affects my long term memory and testing ability. I often struggle with understanding information related to school and feel frustrated that I will not pass my tests. The pressure of

school is so much, since I must always work harder than most students.

I become easily disappointed that I study a lot but often flunk or re-take tests. It is hard to imagine, because in my mind I feel prepared for the work; however, the test results do not connect with the information in my brain. Although I always don't pass my tests, I feel like this injury encourages me to work and shows me that I can be confident when it comes to the future. For example, I have been able to maintain my grades, been employed for over a year at a local restaurant, and obtained my driver's license. I look forward to attending college, getting married, raising a family, and being a success. I will continue to live my life to the fullest and prove that an injury does not limit my life journey.

(1)What is worse when someone suffers a tragedy in his life according to the author?(no more than 7 words)

(2)What was the author's tragic accident that changed his life? (no more than 9 words) (3)Why is the author always struggling with his study at school? (no more than 8 words) (4)What does the underlined word “flunk” mean in the last paragraph? (1 word)

(5)What do you think of the author? Give your reasons. (no more than 25words)

(1)The lack of support from someone./Lacking support from others.

(2)He fell off the bed at sixteen months old.

(3)Because he got a traumatic brain injury./His memory and testing ability became poor.(4)Fail

(5)He is positive/optimistic. Although his life is changed by a tragic accident, he wants to live a full life.

根据第一段中的“The challenge with a tragedy is the lack of support from someone.” The lack of support from someone./Lacking support from others.。

根据第二段中的“At sixteen months old, due to the neglect of my babysitter I fell off the bed.” He fell off the bed at sixteen months old.。

根据第三段中的“This accident affects my long term memory and testing ability.” Because he got a traumatic brain injury./His memory and testing ability became poor.。

根据最后一段中的“I become easily disappointed that I study a lot but often”可知作者虽然努力学习了,但是变得很容易失望,可以推测作者的学习经常“失败;不及格”,故填fail。

根据最后一段中的“I look forward to attending college, getting married, raising a family, and being a success. I will continue to live my life to the fullest and prove that an injury does not limit my life journey.”

He is positive/optimistic. Although his life is changed by a tragic accident, he wants to live a full life.。

5.Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Many people know that trash is a big problem on planet Earth. What many people don't know is that trash has become a problem in outer space too. ________

Statistically, there are more than 22,000 pieces of junk in space around the earth. And these are just the items that we can see from the surface of the earth by telescopes or radars. ________

Objects, like bits of old space rockets or satellites, move around the planet at very high speeds, so fast that even a very small piece can break important satellites or become dangerous to people, particularly astronauts. If the tiniest piece of junk crashed into a spacecraft, it could damage the vehicle. That's because the faster an object moves, the greater the impact if the object collides with something else.

To help minimize additional space junk, countries around the world have agreed to limit the time their space tools stay in orbit to 25 years. Each tool must be built to fall safely into the earth's atmosphere, or the mass of gases that surround the earth, after that. ________

Many scientists are also proposing different ways to clean up space junk. The Germans have been planning a space mission with robots that would collect pieces of space trash and bring them back to Earth so that they can be safely destroyed.

"In our opinion the problem is very challenging, and it's quite urgent as well," said Marco Castronuovo, an Italian Space Agency researcher who is working to solve the problem. ________ Many of these objects are tools that help people use their cell phones or computers. "The time to act is now; as we go farther in time we will need to remove more and more fragments," he says.

A. One reason that it's urgent is that countries are sending more and more objects into space.

B. There are also millions of smaller pieces of junk that we can't see.

C. Blowing up older satellites with a missile may create thousands of smaller pieces!

D. In the upper parts of the atmosphere, it will burn up.

E. When two objects in space collide, the two objects break into many smaller pieces.

F. Years of space exploration have left tons of "space junk" in orbit around the planet.

【答案】 F;B;D;A

根据空后“Statistically, there are more than 22,000 pieces of junk in space around the earth.” F. Years of space exploration have left tons of "space junk" in orbit around the planet.“多年的太空探索在地球轨道上留下了数以吨计的垃圾”,后一句例举了具体的数据,承接后文,切题,故选F。

根据空前“And these are just the items that we can see from the surface of the earth by telescopes or radars.” B. There are also millions of smaller pieces of junk that we can't see.“还有很多小块垃圾我们看不清”,与前一句形成对比,切题,故选B。

根据空前“Each tool must be built to fall safely into the earth's atmosphere, or the mass of gases that surround the earth, after that.” D. In the upper parts of the atmosphere, it will burn up.“在地球的大气层上空,这些太空探测工具能够燃烧”,陈述前一句话的结果和目的,切题,故选D。

根据空前“In our opinion the problem is very challenging, and it's quite urgent as well”以及空后“Many of these objects are tools that help people use their c ell phones or computers.” A. One reason that it's urgent is that countries are sending more and more objects into space.“紧急的原因在于人们发射了更多的卫星到太空,这些卫星主要用于帮助人们上网”,讲述紧急的原因,切题,故选A。

6.Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Life on a Ship

We three children were very excited when we walked up the gangway (舷梯) of the British flagship China Star and saw officers, crew and staff rushing around. A Chinese housekeeper led the way and helped Uncle Jean and Aunt Reine with our luggage. Victor, Claudine and I lagged behind. The housekeeper was tall and thin and towered over everyone. ________ As we followed him down a narrow corridor towards our cabins, Victor whispered to me, "One thing about having no hair at all on your head, you always look neat!"

Though I was still feeling nervous and tongue-tied because it had only been three days since Aunt Reine took me out of St. Joseph's, I laughed out loud. That was the effect Victor had on people. ________ "Boys to the right and girls to the left," said Uncle Jean. Our two cabins were directly opposite each other. Inside, everything was neat, bare and clean. While Aunt Reine, Claudine and I were unpacking, there was a knock on the door.

Victor stood there, wearing a bright-red and orange life-jacket. "Why are you wearing that?" Claudine protested. "Our ship hasn't even sailed yet!" "In case the China Star starts going down. Then you'll really be sorry you're not wearing one yourself. Here! Let me show you something!" ________ Our cabin was below deck. Outside we could see nothing but deep dark water.

Claudine became alarmed. "Mama, how often does a ship sink?" she asked. Before Aunt Reine had time to reply, Victor quipped with a straight face, "Only once!" Aunt Reine and I could not help laughing in spite of ourselves. But then Victor did something my brothers would never have done. He took off his life-jacket, slipped it on his sister and showed her how to adjust the straps. ________ At night, our housekeeper brought in a tiny roll-out bed because there were three of us.

A. Once Victor hid in a lifeboat for half an hour while we searched everywhere.

B. His head was completely hairless, and he was obviously unsteady.

C. He and Claudine made me feel at ease as soon as I met them.

D. There were only two narrow twin beds in our cabin, each covered with dark blue sheets.

E. He parted the curtain and looked out of the round window of the ship.

F. He jumped out as we passed below him, scaring and delighting us at the same time.

根据空前“ The housekeeper was tall and thin and towered over everyone.” One thing about having no hair at all on your head"可知,管家(the housekeeper)没有头发。

根据空前“ Though I was still feeling nervous and tongue-tied because it had only been three days since Aunt Reine took me out of St. Joseph's, I laughed out loud. That was the effect Victor had on people.” C. He and Claudine made me feel at ease as soon as I met them.“我一见到Victor和Claudine,他们就使我感到很舒服。”

E. He parted the curtain and looked out of the round window of the ship.“他打开窗帘,向窗外看去。”

根据空后“ At night, our housekeeper brought in a tiny roll-out bed because there were three of us.” D. There were only two narrow twin beds in our cabin, each covered with dark blue sheets.“我们的小屋里只有两张窄的双人床,每一张都覆盖着深蓝色的床单。”

If you said you were suffering from "burnout" in the early 1970s, you might have raised some eyebrows.

At the time, the term was informally to describe the side effects that heavy drug users experienced.

However, in 1974, a German-American psychologist Herbert Freudenberger found the volunteers at his clinic were struggling, too: their work was tough, and many were lacking in motivation. Freudenberger defined this condition as a state of extreme tiredness caused by constant overwork-and borrowed the term "burnout" to describe it.

Late last month, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the problem will be recognized as a syndrome (综合征) "resulting from workplace stress that has not been successfully managed."

Feeling the burn so how can you tell if you're almost burned out?

"A lot of the signs and symptoms of pre-burnout would be very similar to depression," says Siobhan Murray, a psychotherapist. She suggests looking out for bad habits, such as increased alcohol consumption and relying on sugar to get you through the day. Also watch out for feelings of tiredness that won't go away or not having the energy to exercise or go for a walk. As soon as you begin to feel this way, Murray advises going to see your doctor. "Depression and pre-burnout are very similar. But it is still classified as an occupational phenomenon which is still best tackled by making lifestyle changes."

And how do you know if you're really on the edge of burnout? "Stress is really important, and anxiety is what motivates us to do well," says Murray. "It's when we're continually exposed to stress and anxiety that it starts to turn into burnout."

You're pre-burnout: What's next?

"Sometimes they feel the need to be too perfect so they're having to work very hard to cover up that they're not quite as good as everyone thinks." Another therapist Walker says.

However, sometimes the work environment is the problem. According to a 2018 study of 7,500 US workers, burnout comes from unfair treatment at work, an unmanageable workload and not knowing what a person's role should involve. Workers were also stressed out by a lack of support from their manager and punreasonable time pressure.

Whatever the cause of your burnout, Murray's top tip is to be kind to yourself.

In Murray's experience, a key driver of burnout is today's culture of wanting it all. Often it's just not possible to have a healthy social life and complete a big project at the same time. She says it's vital to prioritize and not expect too much of yourself; when others seem like the perfect boss, parent and friend all at the same time, they're probably misleading us.

If you feel that you might be close to joining the burnout club, take a step back, figure out what's going wrong-and let yourself off the hook.

lack/overuse;imperfect;provide/offer /afford;avoiding;kind

故填abuse/addiction。

(3)原文第三段a state of extreme tiredness caused by constant overwork可知,是指人们因为不断超负荷工作而劳累,而本题所填空在volunteers前,应该是形容词,因此讲tiredness转换为tired/

exhausted。故填tired/exhausted。

(4)原文第四段最后一行stress that has not been successfully managed可知,是指没能处理好压力,而本题所填空应该是名词,固定搭配fail to do表示未能做成某事,此处转换为名词failure。故填failure。

(5)原文第六段第一行be very similar to depression可知,burnout和depression很相似,而所填空应该是名词,固定搭配share similarities with ……

(6)原文第六段第三行需要酒精get you through the day 和not having the energy可知,觉得自己没有精力,或者是精力被过度消耗,所填空为名词,故填lack或overuse。

(8)原文倒数第四段the work environment is the problem和后面具体的unfair treatment at work, an unmanageable workload and not knowing what a person's role should involve可知,公司没能提供有利的工作环境,所填空应该是动词,故填provide/offer /afford。

(10)原文倒数第三段Murray建议要be kind to yourself,故填kind。

G. You are smart and mature, so if something or some situation doesn't feel safe, it probably isn't. 【答案】A;E;F;C;G

此外根据第二段的具体内容take only carry-on carriage—besides avoiding baggage fees—is that the less you have to carry around, the more quickly you can move, if necessary.

There's a contradiction in the way many of us behave online: we know we're being watched all the time, and disapprove of the monitor by Google and the government. But the bounds of what's considered too personal to be uploaded or shared online seems to shrink by the day.

I complain about the lack of privacy, for example, and yet I willingly and routinely trade it for convenience. I no longer run the risk of unforeseen delays on public transport; Google Maps will inform me of the fastest route to my destination; I no longer need to remember my friends' birthdays; Facebook will urge me, and invariably appeal to me to post an update to remind people I exist. All I have to do is make my location, habits and beliefs transparent to their parent companies whenever they choose to check in on me.

So what's going on? “Visibility is a trap,” explained the French philosopher Michel Foucault in Discipline and Punish: the Birth of the Prison(1975). Allowing oneself to be watched, and learning to watch others, is both attractive and dangerous. He took for example “Panopticon”, a prison where prisoners were observed from a tower manned by an invisible occupant. The prisoners would believe in the presence of the mysterious watchman, whether or not anyone was actually inside, and behave themselves.

According to Foucault, the dynamics of the Panopticon are similar to how generally people self-monitor in society. In the presence of ever-watching witness, people police themselves. They don't know what the observers are looking for, or what the punishments are for disobedience (不顺从). But they willingly accept and follow this invisible discipline.

Foucault claimed that such monitoring is worrisome, not just because of what companies and states might do with our data, but because the act of watching is itself a terrible exercise of power, which may influence behavior without our fully realizing it.

But something's not right here. Why does the self-display continue when we are sure that we are watched from everywhere and nowhere?

Social media provides a public space that often operates more like a private one, where many people hold the belief that there they won't suffer the consequences of what they say online, as if protected by technology.

Plato would be alarmed by the lack of shame online. His point about moral knowledge is this: we already know the right way to live a just and fulfilling life, but are constantly distracted(转移) from that noble aim. For him, then, shame helps us be true to ourselves and to pay attention to the moral knowledge within. A man without shame, Plato says, is a slave to desire — for material goods, power, fame, respect. Such desire, by its nature, cannot be satisfied.

Phenomenon While people hate being monitored, the ________ of privacy is gradually becoming a more serious problem.

My experience I complain about the lack of privacy but still exchange it for convenience.

An analogy:

* In the Panopticon, prisoners behave themselves just because they believed they were watched by an ________ watchman.

* In real life, the way people self-monitor ________ the dynamics of the Panopticon. They willingly follow the invisible discipline.

Worries: Our data may be ________ and monitoring may influence us to change our behavior ________.

Reasons for contraction Though being watched, self-display continues because some netizens think that they don't need to take ________ for what they say online.

Conclusion*Shame is essential in leading a just and fulfilling life.

;abused/ misused

;unconsciously

;responsibility

;morality /moral(s)

;prevent/stop

根据第一段中的“There's a contradiction in the way many of us behave online: we know we're being watched all the time, and disapprove of the monitor by Google and the government.”

根据第二段中的“Google Maps will inform me of the faste st route to my destination”可知我依靠Google地图可以寻找到最快的路线。

/count。

根据第二段中的“All I have to do is make my location, habits and beliefs transparent to their parent companies whenever they choose to check in on me.” 根据第三段中的“He took for example “Panopticon”, a prison where prisoners were observed from a tower manned by an invisible occupant.”

根据第四段中的“According to Foucault, the dynamics of the Panopticon are similar to how generally people self-monitor in society.” 句中使用动词resemble与原句中be similar to语义一致,句中主语是单数名词the way,所以要填resembles。

根据第五段“…not just because of what companies and states might do with our data…”

根据第五段最后“which may influence behavior without our fully realizing it.” 句中使用副词unconsciously替换介词短语“without our fully realizing it”,所以要填unconsciously。 根据倒数第二段中的“where many people hold the belief that there they won't suffer the consequences of what they say online, as if protected by technology.”

根据倒数第三句“For him, then, shame helps us be true to ourselves and to pay attention to the moral knowledge within.”

根据倒数第二句“A man without shame, Plato says, is a slave to desire —for material goods, power, fame, respect.” 所以句中要填prevent/stop。

11.Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Today, in most of the theatres in Britain, the stages are situated behind a sort of arch (拱门), called the proscenium (幕布前的舞台部分)arch. The arch runs across the building with the stage on one side of it and the auditorium, housing the audience, on the other. The audience is kept to the area from which it can get a clear view of the stage. This type of theatre has been is use for three hundred years. ________ The actor can ignore them until the end, when they applaud the performance. If an actor wants to speak to the audience he tends to step out of the picture, as it were—down to the edge of the stage.

________ Stage furniture or properties—"props", as they are referred to in the business – are now as few as possible. Elaborate scenery is used only when it is going to last throughout the play, or when it is so constructed that it can be changed quickly. Modern theatres are built with the stage extending far in front of the proscenium arch, if indeed they have a proscenium arch at all, electricity, already long in use, has recently had a revolutionary effect. A change of lighting is as good as a change of scenery, and simpler and quicker; it can light one part of the stage in place of another. Footlights have been found unnecessary. Curtains also are hardly necessary, since the stage can be darkened to signify the end of a scene.

The modern idea of having the stage in front of the proscenium arch is not really modern, of course. It makes our stages much like Shakespeare's. ________ The famous speeches of Hamlet, for instance, can be delivered more quietly and naturally than they were in the las century. The actors no longer have to worry much about not being heard, or about turning their backs to the auditorium. They can get closer to the audience, while a larger audience can see them at work.

Moreover, nowadays, people are finding that modern theatres are built to sit in comfortably for two or three hours at a stretch. ________ The result of these improvements is that, in spite of the high price of seats, perhaps more people than ever before are keen on theatre-going.

A. Over the last few decades, since the Second World War, theatrical customs have altered.

B. It makes people feel, as they watch a play or a show, that they are seeing a living and moving picture.

C. All these innovations have quickened up the pace of the drama.

D. This is an advantage both for actors and audience.

E. Today the theatres are much more comfortable because of the many improvements.

F. Often they can meet and eat in the restaurants attached to the theatres.

【答案】 B;D;A;E

(1)根据本空前的“The arch runs across the building with the stage on one side of it and the auditorium, housing the audience, on the other. The audience is kept to the area from which it can get a clear view of the stage”可知,拱门穿过整个建筑,一边是舞台,另一边是容纳观众的礼堂,观众被限制在能清楚地看到舞台的地方,此处是说这样布局的原因,B项(它让人们觉得,当他们看一出戏剧或表演时,他们看到的是一幅活生生的动态画面)符合语境,故答案为B。

The famous speeches of Hamlet, for instance, can be delivered more

quietly and naturally than they were in the last century.” (4)根据本空后的“The result of these improvements is that, in spite of the high price of seats, perhaps more people than ever before are keen on theatre-going.”
