Passage 2

Nuclear power's danger to health, safety, and even to life itself can be summed up in one

word: radiation.

Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it can not be detected by human senses, that is, can not be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we cannot detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver, Similarly, we cannot sense radioactivity without a radio detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other things.

At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being outright by killing masses of cells in vital organs. But even the lowest levels can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hurt anything important, the damage may not be significant. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed outright, your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they re-produce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in a deformed way. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years.

This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the victim being aware at the time that damage has occurred. A person can be irradiated and feel fine, then die of cancer five, ten or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak or liable to serious illness as a result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents.

Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.

46. The author' s purpose in writing this passage is __________.

C. to warn people of the danger of nuclear

D. to list the bad points of nuclear power

47. All of the following are the shared qualities of nuclear radiation and common radio waves, except

__________.

A. they are all around us

B. they cannot be touched

C. they cannot be seen

D. they cannot be detected by human senses

48. The least serious damage nuclear radiation may do on a person is to __________.

A. kill a few cells outright, which will be replaced with healthy ones

B. damage a fen cells, which will reproduce themselves

C. kill masses of cells in vital organs

D. deform some brain cells

49. Radiation can hurt us in the way that it can __________.

A. kill large number of cells in main organs so as to cause death immediately

B. damage cells which may grow into cancer years later

C. affect the healthy growth of the offspring

D. all of the above

50. We can infer from the passage that __________.

A. the danger of nuclear radiation should not be emphasized

B. only nuclear radiation can cause cancer

C. some people might have been hurt by nuclear radiation without their realizing it

D. nuclear radiation can cause accidents

Passage 3

Telephone, television, radio, and the Internet help people communicate with each other. Because of these devices (设备) , ideas and news of events spread quickly all over the world. For example, within seconds, people can know the results of an election in another country. An international football match comes into the homes of everyone with a television set. News of a disaster (灾难) , such as a flood, can bring help from distant countries. Within hours, help is on the way. This is because modern technology information travels fast.

How has this speed of communication changed the world? To many people, the world has become smaller. Of course, this does not mean that the world is actually physically smaller. It means that the world seems smaller. Two hundred years ago, communication between the continents took a long time. All news was carried on ships that took weeks or even months to cross the oceans. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it took six weeks for news from Europe to reach America. This time difference influenced people's actions. For example, a few battles in the war of 1812 between England and the United States could have been avoided (避免). A peace agreement had already been signed. Peace was made in England, but the news of peace took six weeks to reach America. During these six weeks, the large and serious Battle of New Orleans (新奥尔良) was fought. Many people lost their lives after a peace treaty (条约) had been signed. They would not have died if news had come in time. In the past, communication took much more time than it does now. There was a good reason why the world seemed so much larger than it does today.

Anna Douglas was seventy-two years old when she started writing her newspaper column. She had been the director of a school before she retired, but she needed to keep busy. She was even willing to work without pay. That was the reason she found a volunteer job with an agency. The agency that she chose to work for was a business that helped other businesses find jobs for old people. Every day she talked with other retired people like herself. By talking, she recognized two things. Old people had abilities that were not being used. Old people also had problems--mostly problems with communication.

Mrs. Douglas found a new purpose for herself. Through the years, from time to time she had written stories about people for national magazines. Now there was a new subject; old people like herself. She began to write a newspaper column called "Over Sixty", which focuses on getting old. She writes about the problems of old people, especially their problems with being misunderstood.

Anna Douglas uses her thinking ability to see the truth behind a problem. She understands the reasons why problems begin. She understands old people and young people, too. For example, one of her readers said that his grandchildren left the house as soon as he came to visit. Mrs. Douglas suggested some ways for him to increase understanding with his grandchildren. She told him to listen to young people's music and to watch the most popular television shows.

"It's important to know something about your grandchildren's world," says Mrs. Douglas. "But most of all, keep your mind open. Do not close out other people. [专升本类试卷]河北专接本英语(阅读理解)模拟试卷7 0 Long before recorded history, our ancestors were bathing for pleasure and health. The earliest records often mention the use of rivers for bathing. And the Hindus have believed for centuries that the Ganges River has the power to clean the soul, as well as the body. Several thousand years ago, the inhabitants of the island of Crete built baths with running water. The early Jews took ceremonial baths on certain occasions, making use of oils and ointments(油膏). The Jews also had a custom of bathing the feet of all strangers that came within their gates. This friendly custom is still practised in parts of Palestine. Swimming was popular among the Greeks of ancient time. By the third century before Christ, almost every Greek city of a certain size had at least one public bath. The wealthy classes had private baths and pools, some of which were beautifully decorated. Many of the public baths that the Romans built utilized natural mineral springs. Since most of these springs were naturally warm the Romans took advantage of this free hot water. By the time of the Roman Emperors, these baths were often housed in large, marble(大理石) buildings. The baths built by the Emperor Caracalla, in the center of Rome, covered about one square mile and could hold sixteen thousand people. 1 The earliest bathing place was probably_____. (A)the river (B)the Nile (C)the Ganges (D)the River Jordan 2 According to the passage, today, some parts of Palestine also have the custom of_____. (A)bathing in public baths (B)bathing for pleasure

专升本大学英语阅读理解辅导资料

大学英语阅读理解辅导资料:(共45题) Passage 1 The Antarctic is actually a desert. It is the only continent on the earth without a river or a lake. The Antarctic is all ice all year round. The warmest temperature ever recorded there is zero, at the South Pole. Explorers used to think that a place so cold would have a heavy snowfall. But less than ten inches of snow falls each year. That is less than half an inch of water. Ten times that much moisture falls in parts of the Sahara. The little snow that falls in Antarctica never melts. It continues to pile up deeper and deeper year after year. When the snow gets to be about eighty feet deep it is turned to ice by the weight of the snow above it. 1. Antarctica is called a desert because it ________. A. is sandy B. has the same temperature as a desert C. has little moisture and no lakes or rivers D. All of the above 2. The Antarctic has ________. A. ten times as much moisture as the Sahara B. the same amount of moisture as the Sahara C. about one-tenth the moisture of the Sahara D. None of these. 3. The temperature in the Antarctic is ________. A. always above zero B. always below zero C. never recorded D. Both B and C 4. The snow in Antarctica is very deep because it ________. A. never stops falling B. piles up year after year C. never melts D. Both B and C 5. The snow turns to ice when ________. A. it gets wet B. the temperature gets colder C. the next snowfall comes D. the snow above it is heavy enough 答案:CDBDD Passage 2 Astronomers ( 宇航员) can tell just how hot the surface of the moon gets. The side of the moon toward the sun gets two degrees hotter than boiling water. The night side reaches 243 degrees below zero. In a lunar eclipse (月食) the earth's shadow falls on the moon. Then the moon's temperature may drop 300 degrees in a very short time. A temperature change like this cannot happen on the earth. Why does it happen on the moon? Astronomers know that the surface of the moon is dust. On the earth, rocks store heat from the sun. When the sun goes down, the rocks stay warm. But the dust of the moon cannot store heat. So when the moon gets dark, the heat escapes quickly. The moon gets very cold.
