In the depths of the French Guianese rainforest, there still remain unusual groups of indigenous(土著的) people. Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own social customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony(殖民地) of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they should live by the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into an interesting area of ―lawlessness‖ in the world.

The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the effects of a Frenchman form Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2015 exploring the most remote corners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne.

―I have a special love for the French Guianese people. I have worked there on and off for almost ten years,‖ says Gin. ―I‘ve been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I don‘t see it as a lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom.‖

―I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,‖ continues Gin. ―I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show different specific worlds more clearly.‖

His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic, which brings with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide.

28. Why does the author feel surprised about the indigenous people in French Guiana?

C. They are separated from the modern world.

D. They are both Guianese and French citizens.

A. Cautious.

B. Doubtful.

C. Uninterested.

D. Appreciative.

31. What does the underlined word ―it‖ in the last paragraph refer to?

A. The modern French lifestyle.

B. The self-supporting hunting.

C. The uncivilized world.

D. The French Republic.

D

A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night‘s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night.

Researchers have discovered that ―night milk‖ contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.

The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.

Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.

Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.

While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.

Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.

Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.

32. According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk_______.

A. started sleep more easily

B. were more anxious

C. were less active

D. woke up later

33. Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text?

A. It‘s been tested on mice for ten times.

B. It can make people more energetic.

C. It exists in milk in great amount.

D. It‘s used in sleeping drugs.

34. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Night Milk and Sleep

B. Fat, Sugar and Health

C. An Experiment on Mice

D. Milk Drinking and Health

35. How does the author support the theme of the text?

A. By giving examples.

B. By stating arguments.

C. By explaining statistical data.

D. By providing research results.

Both men and women are living longer these days in industrialized countries. 36 In general, they can expect to live six or seven years more than men. One reason for this is biological.

One important biological factor that helps women live longer is the difference in hormones between men and women. 37 Between the ages of about 12 and 50, women produce hormones that are involved in fertility(生育能力). 39 Scientists are still not exactly sure how influence aging, but they believe that they do. So me think that a woman‘s body cells have a tendency(向) to age more slowly than a man‘s. Others t hink that a man‘s body cells have a tendency to age more quickly. 40

On one of her trips to New York several years ago, Eudora Welty decided to take a couple of New York friends out to dinner. They settled in at a comfortable East Side cafe and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table.

―Hey, aren‘t you from Mississippi?‖ the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by the stranger. ―I‘m from Mississippi too.‖

Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair.

―They began telling me all the news of Mississippi,‖Welty said. ―I didn‘t know what my New York friends were thinking.‖

Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Welty‘s new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at the turn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi.

―My friends said: ?Now we believe your stories,‘‖ Welty added. ―And I said: ?Now you know. These are the people that make me write them.‘‖

Sitting on a sofa in her room, Welty, a slim figure in a simple gray dress, looked pleased with this explanation.

―I don‘t make them up,‖ she said of the characters in her fiction these last 50 or so years. ―I don‘t have to.‖

Beauticians, bartenders, piano players and people with purple hats, Welty‘s people come from afternoons spent visiting with old friends, from walks through the streets of her native Jackson, Miss., from conversations overheard on a bus. It annoys Welty that, at 78, her left ear has now given out. Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment(片段) of a particularly interesting story.

If you are a fruit grower—or would like to become one—take advantage of Apple Day to see what‘s around. It‘s called Apple Day but in practice it‘s more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.

Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn‘t taste of anything special, it‘s still worth a try, as is the knobbly(多疙瘩的) Cat‘s Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else.

There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you‘ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it‘s a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.

At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple-themed fun and games.

Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园).If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.

8.What can people do at the apple events?

A. Attend experts‘ lectures.

B. Visit fruit-loving families.

C. Plant fruit trees in an orchard.

D. Taste many kinds of apples.

9.What can we learn about Decio?

A. It is a new variety.

B. It has a strange look.

C. It is rarely seen now.

D. It has a special taste.

10. What does the underlined phrase ―a pipe dream‖ in Paragraph 3mean?

A. A practical idea.

B. A vain hope.

C.A brilliant plan.

D. A selfish desire.

11.What is the author‘s p urpose in writing the text?

A. To show how to grow apples.

B .To introduce an apple festival.

C. To help people select apples.

D. To promote apple research.

D

Bad news sells. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored(监控) in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules. By tracking people‘s e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.

―The ?if it bleeds‘ rule works for mass media,‖ says Jon ah Berger, a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. ―They want your eyeballs and don‘t care how you‘re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don‘t want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer.‖

Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails, Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative(消极的), but that didn‘t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news s hared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on

The New York Times‘ website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the ―most e-mailed‖ list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times‘ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.

Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book, ―Contagious: Why Things Catch On.‖

12 .What do the classic rules mentioned in the text apply to?

A. News reports.

B. Research papers.

C .Private e-mails. D. Daily conversations.

13. What can we infer about people like Debbie Downer?

A. They‘re socially inactive.

B. They‘re good at telling stories.

C. They‘re inconsiderate of others.

D. They‘re careful with their words.

14.Which tended to be the most e-mailed according to Dr. Berger‘s research?

A . Sports new. B. Science articles.

C. Personal accounts.

D. Financial reviews.

15 .What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Sad Stories Travel Far and Wide

B .Online News Attracts More People

C. Reading Habits Change with the Times

D. Good News Beats Bad on Social Networks

Everyone knows that fish is good for health. 16 But it seems that many people don‘t cook fish at home. Americans eat only about fifteen pounds of fish per person per year, but we eat twice as much fish in restaurants as at home. Buying, storing, and cooking fish isn‘t difficult. 17 This text is about how to buy and cook fish in an easy way.

18 Fresh fish should smell sweet: you should feel that you‘re standing at the ocean‘s edge. Any fishy or strong smell means the fish isn‘t fresh. 19 When you have bought a fish and arrive home, you‘d better store the fish in the refrigerator if you don‘t cook it immediately, but fresh fish should be stored in your fridge for only a day or two. Frozen fish isn‘t as tasty as the fresh one.

There are many common methods used to cook fish. 20 First, clean it and season it with your choice of spices(调料). Put the whole fish on a plate and steam it in a steam pot for 8 to 10 minutes if it weighs about one pound. (A larger one will take more time.) Then, it‘s ready to serve.

A. Do not buy it.

B. The easiest is to steam it.

C. This is how you can do it.

D. It just requires a little knowledge.

E. The fish will go bad within hours.

F. When buying fish, you should first smell it.

G. The fats in fish are thought to help prevent heart disease.

Passenger pigeons (旅鸽)once flew over much of the United States in unbelievable numbers. Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks (群)so large that they the sky

passenger pigeons—a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant bird in the world. Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati.

Sadly the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were

most abundant, people believed there was an ever-lasting supply and killed them by the thousands, Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants.

By the closing decades of the 19th century ,the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons

nested had

been damaged by American‘s need for wood, which scattered (驱散) the flocks and forced the birds to

go farther north, where cold temperatures and storms contributed to their decline. Soon the great flocks

were gone, never to be seen again.

In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons but by then,

no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wi pigeon in the United

States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time , a few birds survived under human

care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden on

September 1, 1914.

C. It was unfair.

D. It was strict.

A typical lion tamer(驯兽师)in people‘s mind is an entertainer holding a whip( 鞭) at a chair. The whip gets all of the attention, but it‘s mostly for show. In reality, it‘ the chair that does the important work. When a lion tamer holds a chair n front of the lion‘s face, the lion tries to focus on all four legs of the chair at the same time. With its focus divided, the lion becomes confused and is unsure about what to do next. When faced with so many options, the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair.

How often do you find yourself in the same position as the lion? How often do you have something you want to achieve (e.g. lose weight., start a business, travel more)—only to end up confused by all of the options in front of you and never make progress?

This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is been the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting information. The end result is that we feel like we cant‘ focus or that we‘re focused on the wrong things, and so we take less action, make less progress, and stay the same when we could be improving.

It doesn‘t have to be that way. Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this: All you need to do is focus on one thing,. You just need to get started. Starting before you feel ready is one of the habits of successful people. If you have somewhere you want to go, something you want to accomplish, someone you want to become…take immediate action. If you‘re clear about where you want to go, the rest of the world will either help you get there or get out of the way.

28. Why does the lion tamer use a chair?

A. To trick the lion.

B. To show off his skills.

C. To get ready for a fight.

D. To entertain the audience.

29. In what sense are people similar to a lion facing a chair?

A. They feel puzzled over choices.

B. They hold on to the wrong things.

C. They find it hard to make changes.

D. They have to do something for show

30. What is the author‘s attitude towards the expert mentioned in Paragraph3?

A. Tolerant.

B. Doubtful.

C. Respectful.

D. Supportive.

31. When the world is ― waving a chair in your face‖, you‘re advised to _____

A. wait for a better chance

B. break your old habits

C. make a quick decision

D. ask for clear guidance

D.

As more and more people speak the global languages of English, Chinese, Spanish, and Arabic, other languages are rapidly disappearing. In fact, half of the 6,000-7,000 languages spoken around the world today will likely die out by the next century, according to the United Nations Educational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

In an effort to prevent language loss, scholars from a number of organizations _UNESCO and National Geographic among them—have for many years been documenting dying languages and the cultures they reflect.

Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Centre Yale University, who specializes in the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas, is following in that tradition. His recently published book, A Grammar of Thangmi with an Ethnolinguistic Introduction to the Speakers and Their Culture, grows out of his experience living, working, and raising a family in a village in Nepal.

Documenting the Thangmi language and culture is just a starting point for Turin, who seeks to include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayan reaches of India , Nepal, Bhutan, and China . But he is not content to simply record these voices before they disappear without record.

At the University of Cambridge Turin discovered a wealth of important materials-including photographs, films, tape recordings, and field notes—which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection.

Now, through the two organizations that he has founded –the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project __Turin has started a campaign to make such documents, for the world available not just to scholars but to the younger generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks to digital technology and the widely available Internet, Turin notes, the endangered languages can be saved and reconnected with speech communities.

32. Many scholars are making efforts to ______.

A. promote global languages

B. rescue disappearing languages

C. search for language communities

D. set up language research organizations.

33. What does ―that tradition‘ in Paragraph 3 refer to ?

A. Having full records of the languages

B. Writing books on language teaching.

C. Telling stories about language users

D. Living with the native speaker.

34. What is Turin‘s book based on?

A. The cultual studies

B. The documents available at Yale.

C. His language research in Bhutan.

D. His personal experience in Nepal.

35. Which of the following best describe Turin‘s work?

A. Write, sell and donate.

I went to a group activity, ―Sensitivity Sunday‖, which was to make us more 36 the problems faced by disabled people. We were asked to ―37 a disability‖ for several hours one Sunday. Some members, 38 , chose to use wheelchairs. Others wore sound-blocking earplugs (耳塞)or blindfolds(眼罩).

Just sitting in the wheelchair was a 39 experience. I had never considered before how 40 it would be to use one. As soon as I sat down, my 41 made the chair begin to roll. Its wheels were not 42 . 53. A. easy B. heavy C. major D. extra

54. A. forgotten B. repeated C. conducted D. finished

55. A. weaknesses B. challenges C. anxieties D. illnesses

Curious about…好奇……;aware of…意识到……;interested in…对…感兴趣;careful with…

39.【答案】A

I had never considered before how…

42.【答案】A

44.【答案】A

【解析】put…into place有“把…

【解析】根据and之后的though it might…

Yet“然而”;just仅仅;still仍然。

50.【答案】A

53.【答案】A

A

Some people will do just about anything to save money. And I am one of them. Take my family‘s last va cation. It was my six-year-old son‘s winter break form school, and we were heading home from Fort Lauderdale after a weeklong trip. The flight was overbooked, and Delta, the airline, offered us $400 per person in credits to give up our seats and leave the next day. I had meetings in New York,So I had to get back. But that didn't mean my husband and my son couldn't stay. I took my nine-month-old and took off for home.

The next day, my husband and son were offered more credits to take an even later flight. Yes, I encouraged—okay, ordered—them to wait it out at the airport, to "earn" more Delta Dollars. Our total take: $1,600. Not bad, huh?

Now some people may think I'm a bad mother and not such a great wife either. But as a big-time bargain hunter, I know the value of a dollar. And these days, a good deal is something few of us can afford to pass up.

I've made living looking for the best deals and exposing (揭露)the worst tricks. I have been the consumer reporter of NBC's Today show for over a decade. I have written a couple of books including one titled Tricks of the Trade: A Consumer Survival Guide. And I really do what I believe in.

I tell you this because there is no shame in getting your money‘s worth. I‘m also tightfisted when it comes to shoes, clothes for my children, and expensive restaurants. But I wouldn't hesitate to spend on a good haircut. It keeps its shape longer, and it's the first thing people notice. And I will also spend on a classic piece of furniture. Quality lasts.

56. Why did Delta give the author's family credits?

A. They took a later flight.

【解析】根据第三段as a big-time bargain hunter….a good deal is something that few of us can afford to pass up可推测作者很少错过便宜货。故选A。

I have been the consumer reporter of NBC‘s today show for over a decade

B

The baby is just one day old and has not yet left hospital. She is quiet but alert (警觉). Twenty centimeters from her face researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it. She stares at it carefully. A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze(凝视)starts to lose its focus —until a third, with three black spots, is presented. Her gaze returns: she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world?

Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? The same experiment, but with three spots shown before two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes. Perhaps it

is just the newness? When slightly older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects (a comb, a key, an orange and so on), changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves. Could it be the pattern that two things make, as opposed to three? No again. Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three, or three to two. The effect even crosses between senses. Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two; likewise (同样地)when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots.

60. The experiment described in Paragraph 1 is related to the baby‘s__.

A. sense of hearing

B. sense of sight

C. sense of touch

D. sense of smell

61. Babies are sensitive to the change in______.

A. the size of cards

B. the colour of pictures

C. the shape of patterns

D. the number of objects

62. Why did the researchers test the babies with drumbeats?

A. To reduce the difficulty of the experiment.

B. To see how babies recognize sounds.

C. To carry their experiment further.

D. To keep the babies‘ interest.

63. Where does this text probably come from?

A. Science fiction.

B. Children‘s literature.

C. An advertisement.

D. A science report.

60.【答案】B

【解析】根据文章第一段she stares it carefully. Her gaze starts to lose its focus可知,本段是对孩子的视觉实验,故选B。

Babies pay more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three, three to two可知D项正确。

C

It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama‘s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, ―a brilliantly (精彩地)written book‖. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.

And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven‘t. In the World Book Day‘s―Report on Guilty Secrets‖, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I‘m not one to lie too often (I‘d hate to be caught out), I‘ll admit here and now that I haven‘t read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell‘s 1984. I think it‘s really brilliant.
