A

All you have is what you bring with you

I've always felt a need to be prepared for whatever situation I've found myself in.

My mother once took me to a store when I was seven years old. She and I got to

the checkout counter, and she realized she had forgotten a couple of things on her shopping list. She left me with the cart and ran off to get what she needed.

"I'll be right back." she said.

She was gone just a few minutes, but in that time, I had loaded all the things on the belt and everything was rung up. I was left staring at the cashier, who was staring at me." Do you have money for me, son?" she said. "I'll need to be paid."

I didn't realize she was just trying to amuse herself. So I stood there, ashamed and embarrassed.

By the time my mom returned, I was angry. "You left me here with no money! This lady asked me for the money, and I had nothing to give her!"

Now that I'm an adult, you'll never catch me with less than $200 in my wallet.

I want to be prepared in case I need it.

I've always admired people who are over-prepared. In college, I had a classmate named Norman. One day he was giving a presentation on an overhead projector (投影仪) and in the middle of his talk, the light bulb(灯泡)on the projector blew out. We would have to wait ten minutes until someone found a new' projector.

"It's Okay." he announced. "There's nothing to worry about."

We watched him walk over to his bag and pull something out. He had brought along a spare bulb for the Overhead projector. Who could even think of that?

I often told my students, "When you go into the wilderness, the only thing you can depend on is what you take with you." And essentially, the wilderness is anywhere but your home or office. So take money. Pack a light bulb. Be prepared.

21. Why did the cashier ask a seven-year-old boy to pay for the purchases'?

A. The boy was shopping by himself.

B. The boy's mother asked her to do so.

C. The cashier was playing a joke on him.

D. The boy's mother was away for something else.

22. Why did Norman bring a spare bulb with him?

A. He was always well-prepared.

B. His presentation was about bulbs.

C. He knew the classroom equipment was of poor quality.

D. He predicted the bulb on the projector would blow out.

23. What do the two stories tell us?

A. Accidents happen almost every day.

B. Money is the key that opens all doors.

C. In fair weather, prepare for a rainy day.

D. Chances favor those who are well-prepared.

B

It was once common to regard Britain as a society with class distinction. Each class had unique characteristics.

In recent years, many writers have begun to speak the 'decline of class' and 'classless society' in Britain. And in modern day consumer society everyone is considered to be middle class.

But pronouncing the death of class is too early. A recent wide-ranging society

of public opinion found 90 percent of people still placing themselves in particular class; 73 percent agreed that class was still a vital part of British society; and 52 percent thought there were still sharp class differences. Thus, class may not be culturally and politically obvious, yet it remains an important part of British society. Britain seems to have a love of stratification.

One unchanging aspect of a British person's class position is accent. The words a person speaks tell her or his class. A study of British accents during 1970s found that a voice sounding like a BBC newsreader was viewed as the most attractive voice, Most people said this accent sounded 'educated' and 'soft'. The accents placed at the bottom in this study, on the other hand, were regional city accents. These accents were seen as 'common' and 'ugly'. However, a similar study of British accents in the US turned these results upside down and placed some regional accents as the most attractive and BBC English as the least. This suggests that British attitudes towards accent have deep roots and are based on class prejudice.

In recent years, however, young upper middle-class people in London, have begun to adopt some regional accents, in order to hide their class origins. This is an indication of class becoming unnoticed. However, the 1995 pop song 'Common People' puts forward the view that though a middle-class person may 'want to live like common people' they can never appreciate the reality of a working-class life.

24. A recent study of public opinion shows that in modern Britain ________.

A. it is time to end class distinction

B. most people belong to middle class

C. it is easy to recognize a person’s class

D. people regard themselves socially different

25. The word stratification in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.

A. variety

B. division

C. authority

D. qualification

26. British attitudes towards accent _________.

A. have a long tradition

B. are based on regional status

C. are shared by the Americans

D. have changed in recent years

27. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. The middle class is expanding

B. A person’s accent reflects his class

C. Class is a key part of British society

D. Each class has unique characteristics.

C

When people think of Hollywood, they think of the city where dreams come true. This did not apply to F. Scott Fitzgerald, a screenwriter who had his share of ups and downs in this land. Fitzgerald was not a successful Hollywood writer because he was not good at the career path he chose. He was an amazing novelist, but his efforts of turning them into screenplays ended in disappointment and confusion. It was because of a lack of potential for screenwriting as well as his addiction and desire to be

famous.

Growing up as a boy, Fitzgerald went to movies a lot. He wanted to write stories that would eventually turn into movies. The problem was: just because Fitzgerald wanted to do something didn’t necessarily mean that he was good at it. He made his attempts, but most of these efforts ended in disappointment because he thought about the change from script(剧本)to screen too much. His plot was too detailed and complicated; his tone was too serious or his dialogue too sentimental(感伤的).

Fitzgerald’s quick rise to fame also led to his fall. In life, things are not meant to happen all at once, all at the same time but it did for Fitzgerald. At his best time, three of his early stories were made into short films, including The Great Gatsby and Babylon Revisited. As the twenties approached, he was gradually forgotten by the reading public. He became drunk and constantly took pills both to sleep and wake up. His marriage was destroyed and his wife broke down mentally. He seemed unsure about his life.

Fitzgerald had another chance at success when many opportunities came his way, including revisions of Emlyn William’s play The Light of Heart and production of one of his own scripts, Cosmopolitan. However, these were all put aside and he was right back where he started, left behind and called a “ruined man”. Fitzgerald simply wa nted too much in his life. He wanted “to be both a great novelist and a Hollywood success, to write songs like Cole Porter and poetry like John Keats”. His addiction to fame held him back and led to his failure as a Hollywood writer.

28. Which is a reason that Fitzgerald failed in screenwriting?

A. He was not talented in screenwriting.

B. He had a miserable family life.

C. He spent too much time watching movies.

D. He was greedy for money in his life.

29. Fitzgerald’s screenwriting was _____.

A. disappointing in ending

B. complex in plot

C. playful in tone

D. simple in dialogue

30. Which of the following was NOT written by Fitzgerald?

A. The Great Gatsby

B. Babylon Revisited

C. The Light of Heart

D. Cosmopolitan

31. When Fitzgerald had another chance at success, he ______.

A. took full advantage of it

B. went back home to start business

C. refused to make changes

D. started to write songs and poems

D

Surviving the boredom of a school day can be bad enough, but when you have to worry about school gangs as well it's enough to make any student want to stay at home and under the covers! Unfortunately, gang culture can be found in many British schools,

and it brings with it negative, and dangerous, side effects. The presence of weapons at or near school, the appearance of graffiti on buildings and lockers, and pressure to blow off school work and exams all follow where the gangs lead. None of these things contribute to a good education, but for school gangs that's exactly the point - school is for being popular and having fun, not learning anything or preparing for the future. Keep these tips in mind and say goodbye to school gangs.

Know your own mind. Often it is those with low self-esteem and a poor self-image who become victims of school gangs. These students don't know their own mind or have a clear picture of what they would like to do in the future, so it is easy to be influenced by those who don't want to do any work today.

Keep yourself busy. School gangs often hang around at or near schools with no real reason. Students who have nothing scheduled can easily be sucked into these groups, but if you are busy, busy, busy and always on the move there will be less chance that you'll have the time to stay and "play".

Choose your friends wisely. With a core group of like-minded friends, it is much easier to stay away from school gangs because you simply don't need them. Remember that gangs are a source of power for members, but they can also be a source of intimidation.

Work hard and have fun. No one likes a teacher's pet, but school gangs in particular hate them. Work hard and have fun at school, but don't annoy anyone with extreme goody-two-shoes (伪君子) behaviour . School gangs can be a nightmare if you must deal with them constantly. Stay away from gang hangouts and gang members, and don't involve yourself in any gang related activities.

32. For the school gangs, school is _____.

A. where they are instructed to behave themselves.

B. a good place to prepare for the future.

C. where they win popularity and enjoy themselves.

D. a place that contributes to a good education.

33. From the author's opinion, gangs lead to the following problems in schools Except _____ .

A. The presence of weapons

B. the appearance of robbery

C. pressure to blow off school work and exam

D. students' scare

34. Which statement is Not True according to the passage?

A. school gangs are harmful to education

B. students lacking enough intelligence often follow school gangs

C. school gangs often wander around schools aimlessly

D. school gangs will provide their member with so-called power

35. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Those who focus on study are more likely to stay away from school gangs.

B. Whoever knows what he will do in the future can be influenced by school gangs.

C. Having a lot to do, you have no chance of getting in touch with school gangs.

D. Without good friends, you are sure to end up with school gangs.

Have you heard about Leap year? Leap year is a year that has 366 days instead of the usual 365. It normally occurs every four years, always on an even-numbered year. The extra day is added to our shortest month. That is the second month of the year, which in non-leap years has 28 days, two fewer than any other month. 36 We also call Leap year the bissextile year (闰年). 37 In our calendar system there is a need for a leap year because the solar year (the time it takes the earth to go around the sun once)is actually slightly more than 365 days long. That extra day—Feb 29 every four years—helps correct the difference between our calendar and the solar calendar.

It is said that Leap year was first made part of the calendar by the ancient Roman leader Julius Caesar. His astronomers had calculated the length of the solar year to be 365 days and six hours. So Caesar declared that an extra day be added to the calendar. 38

However, Caesar’s adjustment was not completely accurate because his astronomers’ year exceeded the true solar year by eleven minutes and fourteen seconds. By 1582, a difference of ten days had developed between the calendar year and the true solar year. To correct this error, Pope Gregory XⅢ ruled that every fourth year would continue to be a leap year except for century years that could not be divided evenly by 400. By this system, century years such as 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not leap years, but the year 2000 was a leap year. 39

People born on Feb 29 celebrate their growing up a little differently from the rest of us. 40 But if they go strictly by the calendar, they have only one-fourth as many birthday celebrations as most people.

A. They acknowledge that they get older each year.

B. When you see Feb 29 on a calendar, you know that year is a leap year.

C. This is its formal or scientific title.

D. This may seem complicated, but it works.

E. In a leap year, the extra day is added to the second month, giving it 29 instead of the usual 28 days

F. The leap year was introduced in the Julian calendar in 46 BC.

G. This is done every four years.

Dear Mr. Black

I am glad that there will be some new columns in our English website. Of the four

columns, I have higher expectation to Today‘s World. As you know, today‘s world is a changing world. We’ll become outdated if we turn a deaf ear to it. From the new column Today‘s World we can learn what‘s going on around the world. It can also enrich our knowledge of the latest science and technology.

As to my suggestion, I would appreciate it if there are more English-learning columns in the website. Most of my classmates are eager to learn English well, but short of learning chances after class. I hope our website can do something about it.

Best wishes.
