1I was watching Sportscenter last night when one of those "human interest" stories came on and really caught my attention. The story was about a 27-year-old professional Bass Fisherman named Clay Dyer. At first, they played it off as another guy trying to make the cut on the Bassmaster tour until they showed a picture of him. No legs, no arm, or rather, he has only 1/3 of his right arm. That's all that he has.It was such an amazing story that I was wondering what this guy could do. Growing up, he learned to play baseball and basketball, but found that fishing was his true calling. And he does it all on his own. He holds the fishing pole under his chin and uses that and his stub (残端) arm to cast and reel in(收进) the fish. He uses his teeth to help him unhook fish. He ties his own hooks or lures on with his mouth, never really asking anyone else to help. Clay Dyer even knows how to swim. Since his body can't produce enough sweat on its own, he has to take a dip in the lake every few hours to keep cool. He dives in just like anyone else, then somehow treads water(踩水) with his stub arm, then, with a little help, pulls himself back up into the boat and goes on fishing.Clay Dyer has never looked for others' pity, nor has he allowed his physical disabilities to prevent him from becoming a professional fisherman. His motto for life is "If I can, you can." He refuses to use special equipment, saying, "I want to do it with one hand the way they do it with two."1. Why did the author become interested in Clay Dyer?A. He assumed Dyer was living happily.B. He wanted to know what Dyer could do.C. He took great pity on this disabled man.D. He thought that Dyer could do nothing.2. We learn from the last paragraph that _________.A. physical disabilities fail to destroy his faithB. Dyer aims to behave like a normal personC. special equipment is allowed when fishingD. it seems easy for Clay Dyer to go fishing3. Which word best describes Clay Dyer's personality?A. Diligent.B. Faithful.C. Inspiring.D. Stubborn.2Lisa was running late. Lisa,25,had a lot to do at work, plus visitors on the way: her parents were coming in for Thanksgiving from her hometown. But as she hurried down the subway stairs, she started to feel uncomfortably warn. By the time she got to the platform,Lisa felt weak and tired--maybe it hadn’t been a good idea to give blood the night before, she thought. She rested herself against a post close to the tracks.Several yards away,Frank,43,and his girlfriend,Jennifer, found a spot close to where the front of the train would stop. They were deep in discussion about a house they were thinking of buying. But when he heard the scream, followed by someone yelling,“Oh,my God,she fell in!” Frank didn’t hesitate. He jumped down to the tracks and ran some 40 feet toward the body lying on the rails. “No! Not you! ”his girlfriend screamed after him.She was right to be alarmed. By the time Frank reached Lisa,he could feel the tracks shaking and see the light coming. The train was about 20 seconds from the station. It was hard to lift her. She was just out. That was where Lisa briefly regained consciousness, felt herself being pulled along the ground, and saw someone else holding her purse.Lisa thought she’d been robbed. A woman held her hand and a man gave his shirt to help stop the blood pouring from her head. And she tried to talk but she couldn’t,and that was when she realized how much pain she was in.Police and fire officials soon arrived, and Frank told the story to an officer. Jennifer said her boyfriend was calm on their 40-minute train ride downtown—just as he had been seconds after the rescue, which made her think about her reaction at th e time. “I saw the train coming and 1 was thinking he was going to die,” she explained.4. What was the most probable cause for Lisa’s weakness?A. She had run a long way.B. She had donated blood the night before.C. She had done a 1ot of work.D. She felt hot in the subway.5. Why did Jennifer try to stop her boyfriend?A. Because they would miss their train.B. Because he didn’t see the train coming.C. Because she was afraid the train would kill him.D. Because she was sure Lisa was hard to lift.6. When did Lisa become conscious again?A. When the train was leaving.B. After the police and fire officials came.C. After she was back on the platform.D. The results they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health. To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA(Food Drug Administration)can require proof (证明)under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that it is safe and effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device, FDA has no authority to require premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health, FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take legal action ,including seizure (查封) of the product. One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, had been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact pads. FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that it was dangerous to health and life.Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings (法律诉讼), and new devices appear continually, Before buying, it is up to the consumer to judge the safety or effectiveness of such items.12.It can be inferred that ads mentioned in the text are ______.A. unreliableB. objectiveC. costlyD. illegal13.Which of the following is true according to the text?A. He stayed on the islands for five weeks, observing various animals. This finally inspired (启发) his famous work, On the Origin of Species. You can certainly follow Darwin’s footsteps and enjoy a trip from four to seven days to the islands. The most well-known animals of the Galapagos is the giant tortoise(巨型海龟),which can be seen moving slowly around the highlands of Santa Cruz, the second largest island in the archipelago (群岛). Some of these creatures are so old that they might have been in their youth by Darwin himself.Despite strict control over activities and timing, your stay on the Galapagos will be remembered as a chain of incomparable pictures; diving with sea lions that swim and play within inches of you; feeling small sharks touch your feet as you swim; and most magically, seeing a whale and her baby surface with a great breath of air.Travelling between the islands and observing the wildlife that so inspired Darwin, so you will feel as though you are getting a special view of an untouched world. At night you will sleep on board the ship, leaving the wildlife in complete occupation of the islands, which are as undisturbed now as they have been since the beginning of time.16. What do we know about Darwin’s visit to the islands?A.He studied different creatures on the islands.B.He was touched by the geography of the islands.C.He completed his famous book on the islands.D.He was attracted by well-know animals of the islands.17.W hich of the following plays a role in making the islands “a paradise for wildlife”?A.Animals on the islands feed on grass.B.Local government forbids killing wildlife.C.People cannot visit the islands as they wish.D.Tourists are not allowed to touch the animals.18.Your stay on the islands will be most impressive mainly because of .A.the beautiful sea views B.Darwin’s inspiring tripC.a closer view of animals D.various daring activities19.which of the following would be the best title for the passage ?A.Calapagos as a Paradise for AenturesB.Charles Darwin as a symbol of GalapagosC.A Unique Attraction for wildlife LoversD.A successful Example of wildlife protection6This brief book is aimed at high school students, but speaks to anyone learning at any stage of life. Its formal, serious style closely matches its content, a school-masterly book on schooling .The author, W.H. Armstrong, starts with the basics: reading and writing. In his opinion, reading doesn’t just mean recognizing each word on the page; it means taking in the information, digesting it and incorporating it into oneself just as one digests a sandwich and makes it a part of himself .The goal is to bring the information back to life, not just to treat it as dead facts on paper from dead trees. Reading and writing cannot be completely separated from each other; in fact, theaim of reading is to express the information you have got from the text. I’ve seen it again and again:someone who can’t express an idea after reading a text is just as ineffective as someone who hasn’t read it at all.Only a third of the book remains after that discussion, which Armstrong devotes to specific tips for studying languages, math, science and history. He generally handles these topics thoroughly(透彻地) and equally ,except for some weakness in the science and math sections and a bit too much passion(激情) regarding history to his students , that was a hundred times more than my history teachers ever got across .To my disappointment, in this part of the book he ignores the arts .As a matter of fact, they demand all the concentration and study that math and science do, though the study differs slightly in kind .Although it’s commonly believed that the arts can only be naturally acquired, actually, learning the arts is no more natural than learning French or mathematics. My other comment is that the text aged. The first edition apparently dates to the 1960s—none of the references(参考文献)seem newer than the late 1950s. As a result, the discussion misses the entire computer age. These are small points, though, and don’t affect the main discussion. I recommend it to any student and any teacher, including the self-taught student.20. According to Armstrong, the goal of reading is to________.A. gain knowledge and expand one’s viewB. experts ideas based on what one has readC. understand the meaning between the linesD. get information and keep it alive in memory21. The author of the passage insists that learning the arts_________.A. demands real passionB. requires great effortsC. is less natural than learning mathsD. is as natural as learning a language22. What is a shortcoming of Armstrong’s work acco rding to the author?A. Some ideas are slightly contradictory.B. There is too much discussion on studying science.C. It lacks new information.D. The style is too serious.23. This passage can be classified as________.A. a book reviewB. an advertisementC. a feature storyD. A news report7England’s shameful defeat in the race to host the 2018 World Cup caused a bitter new “Cold War” with Russia last night. The £15 million bid—accompanied by David Cameron, Prince William and David Beckham—didn’t even get past the first round. It secured just two of the 22 votes by committee members of football’s world governing body Fifa in a secret ballot(投票)—one of which wa s cast by England’s own FA Chairman Geoff ThompsonAmong strong suspicions of shady backroom deals, the tournament went to Russia.Last night Downing Street did little to hide is anger and said Mr. Cameron had no plans to congratulate Russian Prime Ministe r Vladimir Putin personally “at the present time”.Shortly after Fifa president Sepp Blatter declared Russia the winner for 2018, he announcedthat Qatar, a tiny desert country which has never even qualified to play in the World Cup, would host the 2022 tournament, beating bids from Australia, the United States and a joint bid from Japan and South Korea.Fifa’s controversial decisions strengthened suspicions that the voting process was corrupt and that the sport’s world governing body had submitted to the e nergy-rich countries’ billions, meaning that England’s bid never stood a chance.A “bitterly disappointed” and visibly furious Mr. Cameron said England had the best technical bid and what he believed was the strongest commercial bid, adding: “It turns out that’s not enough.”Asked what more England could have done to secure the tournament, he Prime Minister replied: “I think that’s for others to say.”When Mr. Cameron met Russian President Dmitry Medvedev he had challenged him to a “good clean fight” but last night the Prime Minister’s official spokesman refused to say the voting process was either good or clean.Number 10 aides were furious with the outcome after Mr. Cameron had made two flying visits to Zurich where the vote was held and been up into the small hours yesterday like crazy lobbying for critical votes. So determined was the Government to win the bid that Mr. Blatter was even allowed to hold Mr. Cameron’s baby daughter Florence when he visited Downing Street recently. But despite three days of intense lobbying in Zurich by the Three Lions, the England bid team feared they had been damaged by an accusation of corruption against Fifa members by BBC’s Panorama and The Sunday Times.24.The underlined word “furious” is closest in meaning to “”.A.guilty B.worried C.confused D.angry 25.According to the passage, voted for England during the secret ballot.A.David Cameron B.David BeckhamC.Geoff Thompson D.Sepp Blatter26.By saying “It turns out that’s not enough.” Mr. Cameron really means.A.England still has a long way to go to host the World CupB.there were dirty deals behind the decisionC.Russia has done far better than England to bid for the 2018 World CupD.England hasn’t been fully prepared for the bid of the 2018 World Cup27.As can be concluded from the passage, one of the reasons for England’s failure might be.A.its lack of experience B.an accusation by BBC’s Panorama and The Sunday Times C.its lack of energy D.its bad economic situation8Food sometimes gets poisoned with harmful things. A person who eats such food can get an illness called food poisoning. Food poisoning is usually not serious, but some types are deadly. The symptoms of food poisoning usually begin within hours of eating the poisoned food. Fever is one of the most common symptoms.Certain microorganisms(微生物)cause most types of food poisoning. Bacteria and other microorganisms can poison eggs, meat, vegetables, and many other foods. After entering the body, these tiny living things release(释放)poisons that make people sick. Some chemicals can also cause food poisoning. They are often added to food while it is being grown, processed, or prepared. For example, many farmers spray chemicals on crops to kill weeds and insects. Some people may have a bad reaction to those chemicals when they eat the crops. Some plants and animals contain natural poisons that are harmful to people. These include certain kinds of seafood, grains, nuts, seeds, beans, and mushrooms. When people handle food properly, the risk of food poisoning is very small. Microorganisms multiply rapidly in dirty places and in warm temperatures. This means that people should never touch food with dirty hands or put food on unwashed surfaces. Food should be kept in a refrigerator to stop microorganisms from growing. Meat needs to be cooked thoroughly to kill any dangerous microorganisms. People should also wash food covered with chemicals before eating it. Finally, people should not eat wild mushrooms or other foods that grow in the wild. Some of these foods may contain natural materials that are poisonous to humans. In addition, some types of fish can be poisonous. Most people recover from food poisoning after a few days of resting and drinking extra water. If people eat natural poisons, they must go to the hospital right away to have their stomachs emptied.28. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. Food when poisoned can make people sick.B. Food poisoning comes in varieties.C. Food poisoning means death.D. Food poisoning can be serious.29. Food poisoning can be caused by all the following EXCEPT .A. low temperaturesB. some chemicalsC. some tiny living thingsD. certain natural materials30. From Paragraph 5,we can learn that .A. mushrooms should not be eatenB. vegetables are safer than meat and seafoodC. different types of food should be handled differentlyD. natural poisons are more dangerous than chemicals31. It can be inferred from the passage that .A. natural materials are safe in food processingB. food poisoning is out of controlC. chemicals are needed in food processingD. food poisoning can be kept under control9Some people who find themselves unable to solve a problem react(反应) by just giving up. But it is not good to escape from problems by giving up or by making excuses for failures. You may be sure that all young people go through the same difficult process that you are going through:meeting new situations, developing new skills, and testing their abilities. If you are unhappy about something, face it. Try to state the problem in a few words,so that you will know exactly what you are up against. Then see if you can "put your finger" on the cause of your unhappiness. In many cases,we only "think" there is no solution to a particular problem. But often we can overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack. For example,a boy wanted to be a debater(辩论家). When he tried out for the debating team as a freshman, the coach thought he was hopeless. He was shy;he had a high-pitched voice;andhis posture(体态) was poor. Although he was given little hope of success,he took advantage of every opportunity to debate. He studied successful speakers and sized up his own weaknesses and assets. Then he spent many hours learning all the facts on the topics for debate, and worked at developing good posture and at speaking clearly. By his junior year,he made the school debating team, and in his senior year he was on the winning team in his state. He achieved his goal because he had made a direct attack upon his problem.Although direct attack is often the best way to meet problems,we have to be realistic in judging situations. Sometimes it is necessary to change either the tactics(策略) or the goal.A girl who has plain features may decide that she cannot win popularity with her face, and so she may try to develop an interesting personality, which eventually will get her much further. In this situation, she must change her method of achieving her goal. So,although direct attack is often the best way to handle problems,it is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to do.32. What is the main idea discussed in the first paragraph?A. Giving up a puzzling problem.B. Going through the same difficult process.C. Testing people's abilities.D. Escaping from problems by making excuses for failures.33. The phrase "are up against" in the second paragraph could best be replaced by "_______".A. are faced withB. are fond ofC. met withD. looked at34. By taking example from the boy who wanted to be a debater, the author means ______.A. you are going through new situations, developing new skills, and testing their abilitiesB. it is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to doC. it is necessary to change either the tactics or the goalD. we can overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack35. Which of the following is the topic sentence of the text?A. It is not good to escape from problems by giving up or by making excuses for failures.B. If you are unhappy about something, face it,and try to state the problem in a few words.C. Although direct attack is often the best way to handle problems,it is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to do.D. Although direct attack is often the best way to meet problems, we have to be realistic in judging situations.第II卷(非选择题30分)第一节:阅读表达(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题,注意问题后的字数要求。

Food poisoning can be caused by all the following EXCEPT .A. low temperaturesB. some chemicalsC. some tiny living thingsD. certain natural materials27. From Paragraph 5,we can learn that .A. mushrooms should not be eatenB. vegetables are safer than meat and seafoodC. different types of food should be handled differentlyD. natural poisons are more dangerous than chemicals28. It can be inferred from the passage that .A. natural materials are safe in food processingB. food poisoning is out of controlC. chemicals are needed in food processingD. food poisoning can be kept under controlCSome people who find themselves unable to solve a problem react(反应) by just giving up. But it is not good to escape from problems by giving up or by making excuses for failures. You may be sure that all young people go through the same difficult process that you are goingthrough:meeting new situations, developing new skills, and testing their abilities. He was shy;he had a high-pitched voice;and his posture(体态) was poor. So,although direct attack is often the best way to handle problems,it is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to do.29. What is the main idea discussed in the first paragraph?A. Giving up a puzzling problem.B. Going through the same difficult process.C. Testing people's abilities.D. Escaping from problems by making excuses for failures.30. The phrase "are up against" in the second paragraph could best be replaced by "_______".A. are faced withB. are fond ofC. met withD. looked at31. By taking example from the boy who wanted to be a debater, the author means ______.A. you are going through new situations, developing new skills, and testing their abilitiesB. it is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to doC. it is necessary to change either the tactics or the goalD. we can overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack32 Which of the following is the topic sentence of the text?A. It is not good to escape from problems by giving up or by making excuses for failures.B. If you are unhappy about something, face it,and try to state the problem in a few words.C. Although direct attack is often the best way to handle problems,it is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to do.D. Although direct attack is often the best way to meet problems, we have to be realistic in judging situations.DThe Pacific island nation of Nauru used to be a beautiful place. Now it is an ecological disaster area. Nauru‘s heartbreaking story could have one good consequence-other countries night learn from its mistakes. For thousands of years, Polynesian people lived on the remote island of Nauru, far from western civilization. The first European to arrive was John Fearn in 1798. He was thecaptain of the Hunter, a whaling ship. He called the island Pleasant Island. However, because it was very remote, Nauru had little communication with Europeans at first. Then whaling ships and other traders began to visit, bringing guns and alcohol. These elements destroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the island. A ten-year civil war started, which reduced the population from 1,400 to 900. Nauru‘s real troubles began in 1899 when a British mining company discovered phosphate磷酸盐on the island. In fact, it found that the island of Nauru was nearly all phosphate, which is a very important fertilizer for farming. The company began mining the phosphate. A phosphate mine is not a hole in the ground; it is a strip mine .when a company strip- mines, it removes the top layer of soil. Then it takes away the material it wants. Strip-mining totally destroys the land. Gradually, the lovely island of Nauru started to look like the moon. In 1968, Nauru became one of the richest countries in the world. Every year the government received millions and millions of dollars for its phosphate. Unfortunately, the leaders invested the money unwisely and lost millions of dollars. In addition, they used millions more dollars for personal expenses. Soon people realized that they had a terrible. problem-their phosphate was running out. Ninety percent of their island was destroyed and they had nothing. By 2000, Nauru was almost financially ruined. Experts say that it would take approximately $433,600,000 and more than 20 years to repair the island. This will probably never happen.33. What might be the author‘s purpose in writing the text?A. To seek help for Nauru‘s problems.B. To give a warning to other countries.C. To show the importance of money.D. To tell a heartbreaking story of a war.34. What was Nauru like before the Europeans came?A. Rich and powerful.B. Modern and open.C. Peaceful and attractive.D. Greedy and aggressive.35. The ecological disaster in Nauru resulted fromA. soil pollutionB. phosphate overminingC. farming activityD. whale hunting 36. Which of the following was a cause of Nauru‘s financial problem?A. Its leaders misused the money.B. It spent too much repairing the island.C. Its phosphate mining cost much money.D. It lost millions of dollars in the civil war. 37. What can we learn about Nauru from the last paragraph?A.The ecological damage is difficult to repair.B. The leaders will take the experts‘ words seriouslyC. The island was abandoned by the Nauruans.D. The phosphate mines were destroyed.EOne of the greatest contributors to the fist Oxford English Dictionary was also one of its most unusual. In 1879, Oxford University in England asked Prof. James Murray to serve as editor for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the English language. It would include every English word possible and would give not only the definition but also the history of the history of the word and quotations (引文)showing how it was used. This was a huge task, so Murray had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States, and the British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English. Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor . Dr. minor was an American surgeon who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England. He gave his address as ―Broadmoor, Crowthome, Berkshire, ―50 miles from Oxford. Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words a ndquotations to Murray. Over the next 17 years, he became one of the staff‘s most valued contributors. But he was also a mystery. In spite of many invitations, he would always decline to visit Oxford. So in 1897, Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthome himself. When he arrived, he found Minor locked in a book-lined cell at the Broadmoor Asylum 精神病院for the Criminally Insane. Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than 10,000 submissions in 20 years. Murray continued to visit Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum grounds. In 1810, Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in his native America. Murray was at the jport to wave goodbye to his remarkable friend. Minor died in 1920, seven years before the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed. The 12 volumes defined 414,825 words, and thousands of them were contributions from a very scholarly and devoted asylum patient.38. According to the text, the first Oxford English DictionaryA. came out before Minor diedB. was edited by an American volunteerC. included the English words invented by MurrayD. was intended to be the most ambitious English dictionary39. A new technology is going to ripe, one that could transform our daily lives, help to form new industries, even remove world economic powers from their present positions. Unlike the wave of industrialization that began in the West and spread later to the rest of the world, the new developments are taking place in research labs all over the globe—and Asians are in the forefront. Physicists are creating a new class of materials that display an amazing property unforeseen even two years ago—superconductivity (超导体技术).Used today only in specialized equipment, super conductors have the potential to radically change most of the electrical and electronic appliances found in the home, making them smaller, more powerful and efficient. They could free our cities of pollution by replacing petrol and diesel (柴油) vehicles with electric cars, and cut the cost of electricity. The new materials do something that even the best of conductors such as copper and silver cannot—they do away with all electrical resistance. The significances for energy storage are great. The technology is in its early stage, still accessible to countries that decide to invest brains and money. For 75 years it had remained little more than a scientific curiosity with limited practical use because the phenomenon occurred only at extremely low temperatures. It was first observed in 1911 by a Dutch scientist named Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, who cooledmercury (水银) to temperatures below -269℃ with liquid helium (氦). Then in January last year, two IBM scientists, K. Alex Muller and J. George Bednorz, found a metal oxide ceramic (氧化陶瓷) that superconducted at -243℃. Their report went largely unnoticed until last December, when it was confirmed at a scientific meeting in Boston. Today Japan, India, China and other Asian countries all have their share of experts who spend their days and nights in labs, acting as midwives (助产士) to a new technology.(1)As is indicated in the passage, the technology of superconductivity ____________. A. has already been developed B. is still under developmentC. will be used only in specialized equipmentD. will be used in daily lives in a few years(2)The new technology differs from the others in that ____________.A. it began in the East and spread later to the rest of the worldB. it began in the West and spread later to the rest of the worldC. it is being cultivated in research labs around the worldD. it is accessible to physicists who are intelligent and rich(3)From the passage, we may conclude that ____________.A. Asian scientists gain the lead in the growth of the new technologyB. Dutch scientists kept reporting new findings for the last 75 yearsC. IBM scientists' report receive immediate attention all over the worldD. the West was astonished at the new technology developedby the Asians(4)Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. The Prospect of a New TechnologyB. Superconductivity: A New TechnologyC. A New Technology: The Key to Change the Way of Our LivesD. A New Technology: A Joint Effort of Many Countries【答案】(1)B(2)C(3)A(4)B【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了超导体技术的发展潜能和发展状况。

( A-I 共 9 篇)AWhat should you think about when you try to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at schools. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at mental work or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on Saturday or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a par-time job.Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is bitter to face any weaknesses than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not feel sorry about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.1. My work was to help the president and senior vice-presidents make and carry out their new strategic ideas. It was a big challenge, and I must work very hard. At the same time, my mother was in the final stages of cancer.I worked during the day and drove 40 miles home to be with her every night. It was tiring and stressful, but it was what I wanted to do. My promise was to continue to do excellent consulting work during the days in the company, even though my evenings were very hard. I didn't want to bother the president with my situation, but I felt that someone in the company needed to know what was going on if I could not leave my mother at home someday. So I told the vice-president of Human Resources the truth, and asked him not to share the information with anyone else in the company.A few days later, the president called me into his office. Leadershipmeans power, commands respect and, most important, encourages achievement. Unlike vitamin C, leadership skills can't be easily swallowed down. They must be carefully cultivated.Different from popular belief, most good leaders are made, not born. They learn their skills in their everyday lives. But which do they develop? How do they (and how can you) get others to follow?Always give credit. Many leaders note that the most efficient way to get a good performance from others is to treat them like heroes. Giving public credit to someone who has earned it is the best leadership technique in the world. It is also an act of generosity that's never forgotten.Giving credit is more effective than even the most constructive criticism, which often hurts rather than helps. Kenneth Blanchard, the author of The One- Minute Manager, agrees. "Catch people doing something right!" he says. Then tell everyone about it.Take informed risks. "The best leaders know that taking a risk is not a thoughtless exercise, "says management adviser Marilyn Machlowitz." Sky divers don't go up in an airplane without checking the parachutes beforehand." ( A-I 共 9 篇)AWhat should you think about when you try to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at schools. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value.Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. Leadership means power, commands respect and, most important, encourages achievement. "The best leaders know that taking a risk is not a thoughtless exercise, "says management adviser Marilyn Machlowitz." Sky divers don't go up in an airplane without checking the parachutes beforehand."Because the idea of risk also carries with it the possibility of failure, many of us usually wait for others to take charge. We all felt that this man looked very strange, but, because each of us was afraid of looking very stupid, no one said anything. We ate rather slowly, taking as long as possible. After finishing, we collected our plates together so that we could take them to the river where we always washed them. But no one moved towards the river— we stood looking at each other ashamed. Then all shouting at once, we began talking about the man who had walked past us. We agreed how strange he looked and we wondered what he could be doing by the river. We knew that he could only return by passing through our camp.An hour passed. Then one of the boys suggested we should creep(悄悄移动)down by the river so that we could see what the man was doing. Moving very slowly and keeping in the shadow, we crept down towards the bank. One boy climbed a tree so that he could see everything clearly. He called to us that there was no one there, so we ran down to the bank, looking every-where carefully. We could not understand where the man had gone. When it got dark, we went back to our camp feeling bewildered. We told the scoutmaster what had happened in the evening. Smiling, he doubted that we had seen the man, but finallysuggested we go and look again. We did, but there was no one there. Many years have passed, but I still remember it as if it were yesterday.
