1.

Some people are so rude!

Who sends an e-mail or a text message that just says “Thank you”? Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you? Who asks for a fact easily found on Google? Don't these people realize that they're wasting your time?

Maybe I'm the rude one for not appreciating life's little politeness. But many social agreed standards just don't make sense to people drowning in digital communication.

In texts, you don't have to declare who you are or even say hello; E-mail, too, is slower than a text; Voice mail is a now impolite way of trying to connect.

My father learned this lesson after leaving me a dozen voice mail messages, none of which I listened to. Exasperated, he called my sister to express his dissatisfaction that I never returned his phone calls. “Why are you leaving him voice mails?” my sister asked. “Just text him.”

In the age of the smartphone, there is no reason to ask once-acceptable questions about: the weather forecast, a business's phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, which can be easily found on Google Maps. But people still ask these things. And when you answer, they respond with a thank-you e-mail.

How to handle these differing standards? Easy: Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thank-you message. Others, like me, want no reply.

The anthropologist(人类学家) Margaret Mead once said that in traditional societies, the young learn from the old. But in modern societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here's hoping that politeness never goes out of fashion but that time-wasting forms of communication do.

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.

In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus it began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.

Though the belief in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War Ⅱ. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea; clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?

Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children of touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家),encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.

The repairman told me , “No charge ,Professor Pan!” We’re friends.

“I’d rather pay ,” I replied.“If it’s free,I can’t afford it !”

Chinese often refuse payment for professional services, insisting, “We’re friends now !” But then they show up later to ask me to tutor them in English, or get them into an American university, and I wish I’d have just paid the 30 yuan I owed them in the first place!

According to the Americans, “There is no free lunch.”, means that there’s a price for everything. And I’m always looking around to figure out wh at this means.

Many of our neighbours have given us fruit or flowers or costly teas, never asking anything in return. For years, a bicycle repairman has repeatedly refused to let me pay him. “Wait until you have something major to fix !” he insists.

I mentioned to a peasant friend that I wished I had a stone mill to grind (磨) flour for bread. A month later he showed up with a beautiful mill that he and his uncle in the countryside had carved from a solid block of stone.

Chinese generosity is a real education for Americans like me, who would rather avoid social entanglements (纠纷) and just hand over the money. But cash can’t compensate (补偿) for the greatest gift----friendship.

When an American saw some of my friends sitting on bamboo stools under the trees, sipping (呷) tea, he said , “They must have nothing better to do.” “Actually,” I said ,”they are professors, with plenty to do. But probably you are right in saying that, at this moment ,they have nothing better to do. And neither do I!”

And I joined the group. When chatting about tea and Chinese cooking and how much my boys have grown since we arrived ,one man said , “They were pocket-sized when you came here. Now they’re taller than you.How time flies !.”

How life flies. And Chinese are smart enough to share what they know they cannot keep. They freely give off their time, never too busy to help a friend. And they are teaching

me ,slowly ,to both give and receive. So the next time someone says , “No charge. We’re friends !” I will thank them heartily. But if they show up later asking me to tutor them in English, I’ll make sure they tutor my son in Chinese as well, because there’s still no free lunch.

24.Why did the author insist paying the repairman while he was offered free repairs?

B.Because he didn’t know the repair man

C.Because he thought it natural to pay for other’s service.

D.Because he didn’t want to help others in return.

25. Generally ,the author thinks that ________.

D.Chinese are helpful but don’t treasure time

A. Still No Free lunch B. A Good Lesson From Chinese

Three Square Market is offering to implant microchips in all of their employees for free. Each chip costs $300 and Three Square Market will pay for the chip. Sometimes your expectations don't survive. But you have to make it through.

After a lengthy visa application procedure, I left my father with our dog, jumped on a flight, and there I was in London. Since Europe is an aspiration in my country, I had imagined it as a place where things always worked perfectly. I was alone in dealing with all kinds of problems as they arose, that was alright and this is how I became my own "special person" during my Erasmus exchange.

The accommodation I could afford was far from the city. To make things worse, I was new to many things, and definitely an outsider. But it wasn't an exception to carelessness, I found out. My dorm was in a silent neighborhood. Little did I know that those calm streets would he visited by loud fire trucks...And because of me!

That morning, I closed the kitchen door after placing some bread in the toaster. I was still half asleep and looking for what to wear. For some reason, the automatic mechanism of the

toaster to push the slices up didn't work. When I went back to the kitchen, it was full of thick white smoke. Coughing hard, I opened the windows, stepped outside the door for a breath, and then went in again to reach for the fire extinguisher(灭火器).It was the first time I used one, and had to get out of the kitchen to be able to see how to unlock it. It was only then the fire alarm went off! I went in again and made sure I put off the fire.

Nothing was like how I planned. A few times I hung out in the school cafeteria, but couldn't make friends .I went to discover the city, alone. Independence wasn’t something to be ashamed of after all. I wish I had made friends with people, but it turned out that I had to learn I wasn't in need of others' company to enjoy life. I tried to make the best of my time, thinking that being alone is a blessing too, just like being with friends is. My international experiences that followed definitely made me more social, but now I know that being alone is not a weakness, but a part of life to embrace. The idea that you can use humor, laughter, and play to make you healthier probably seems too simple to be true. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humor, laughter and play has an important part in keeping you healthy.

Use "the best medicine" to treat the blues with a sense of humor, which is closely tied to laughter. Laughter is infectious. Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and a smile is also just as infectious as laughter is. You can experience something by smiling at everyone around you, and you will feel happier just by sharing a smile, even with a stranger.

Play is an important part of making sure that we stay healthy. We are often encouraged to make sure our children play, and are told of the benefits of being out playing. However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as it’s for children. Physical play is important for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. While the studies are still in the early stages, the studies that have been done have shown that physical play certainly plays a part in preventing cognitive(认知的) falling.

Known as GC-1,the drug reportedly speeds up metabolism(新陈代谢),or burning off, of fat cells.“GC-1 dramatically increases the metabolic rate, essentially transforming white fat, which stores extra calories and is associated with obesity and metabolic disease, into a fat like calorie-

burning brown fat,” said Kevin Phillips, a researcher in Houston.

Until several years ago, scientists thought that only animals and human babies have energy-burning, "good" brown fat. “It is now clear,” Phillips said, “that human adults do have brown fat, but appear to lose its calorie-burning activity over time.” White fat has a bad effect on people when the body has too much of it. Some published research shows that people who have more brown fat have a reduced risk of obesity. Researchers are now working on ways to “brown” white fat, or change it into brown fat.

GC-1 works, according to Phillips. He said he and other researchers have tested the drug in hundreds of mice. Obese mice, both genetically obese and those with diet-induced obesity, received GC-1 treatment daily. Genetically obese mice lost weight and more than 50 percent of their fat mass in approximately two weeks, Phillips reported. He said mice with diet-induced obesity experienced similar improvements. The drug also caused adaptive thermo genes(适应性发热)in fat cells from mice. Cells grown in a dish, as well as tissue samples taken from obese mice, showed evidence of white-fat browning. “Our data prove that GC-1 is a novel fat-browning agent that may have use in the treatment of obesity and metabolic disease,” Phillips said.

The drug has not yet been tested for weight loss in humans. However, Phillips said it wouldn’t be long before it was used as a way of losing weight.

President Xi Jinping, while visiting a village in North China's Shanxi province, called on Wednesday for greater efforts and more effective measures to help those living in poverty.

The president has paid much attention to poverty reduction in recent years. In his New Year’s address, Xi said that what he cares most about is poor people. The people's longing for a happy life is the goal that the Communist Party of China is striving for, Xi said during a stop in the

village of Songjiagou, Kelan county, during his Shanxi inspection tour. The village is newly built for local people who relocated from poverty-stricken homes nearby. He called on the villagers to “roll up their sleeves and work on” and the people's livelihoods will “rise joint by joint like sesame flowers on the stem,” the president said.

Xi recognized the local government's efforts to relocate villagers from impoverished(贫困的)areas to newly built residences. He urged local authorities to take more measures to help poor people improve living conditions and raise their incomes. In the village of Zhaojiawa, Xi held talks with civil servants who were dispatched(派遣)from the Kelan county people's congress for the village's poverty alleviation(缓和)work. He encouraged the civil servants to have intensive contacts with villagers and help them out of poverty.

Noting that the CPC has dispatched a number of officials and teams to take charge of poverty relief at grassroots organizations in recent years,Xi said that the measures are effective for poverty alleviation. The number of people living in poverty nationwide was reduced by 12.4 million last year to 43.35 million. The government will lift another 10 million people out of poverty this year, according to the Government Work Report.

If you are a student, you may be probably required by your teacher to read quickly in class. You have been taught to skim or scan, to look for key words so as to understand the main idea of the article and the important points in the article. Skimming and scanning is a good strategy when you are pressed for time, such as when you are taking an exam, but today, many people skim and scan everything and they have lost the ability to enjoy reading.

In response to this, something called the "slow reading movement" has become popular. The idea is that people should shut off their computers and mobile phones for half an hour or forty-five minutes each day and enjoy the pleasure reading a good book—slowly! In many cities there are even slow reading clubs where members go to a cafe, not discuss books, but to sit

quietly with each other, drink coffee and just read.

Researchers have found that reading slowly, especially books of fiction, helps people concentrate, relax and think about what they are reading. It also helps people empathize. This last point is important. When you read a novel slowly, you get to understand the characters’ emotions and to see the world through their eyes.

Reading, of course, isn't easy. You have to sit still, for one thing. And it can seem boring when compared to the excitement of playing video games. But, for me, reading has been an enduring pleasure in my life. From the age of ten, when I got my first library card, I’ve enjoyed the company of pirates and heroes, of evil criminals and clever detectives, of thousands of interesting people I would have never met in real life. Reading provided me with escape, but it also enabled me to understand the world around me. It was an education in a classroom that had no walls.

In your classroom, you have learned to read “fast”. Outside of the classroom, you should try to learn to read “slowly”. You may be surprised at how much you enjoy it.

25.When you are having an exam, it's acknowledged that .

A.reading slowly is the best way

B.reading word for word is a good method

C.reading fast is a good strategy

D.reading casually is a wonderful choice

26.Which of the following is NOT one of the characteristics of "slow reading movement"?

A.Enjoying the pleasure of reading a good book slowly.

B.Helping people refresh and relax.

C.Understanding the characters' emotions more accurately.

D.Getting the main idea of the article quickly.

27.What does the underlined word “empathize” (para.3) mean?

A.benefit from something

B.feel sympathy for someboby

C.be interested in something

D.share feelings with someboby

28.Why does the writer call reading “an education in a classroom that had no walls”?

A.Because there is no need to build walls for the books.

B.Because a library card is what you need to enjoy reading in the library.

C.Because reading enables people to better understand the world around them.

D.Because there are thousands of interesting people in the books who can help you escape.

Should doctors ever lie to benefit their patient--–to speed recovery or to cover the coming of death? In medicine, the requirements of honesty often seem dwarfed (变矮小) by greater needs: the need to protect from brutal news or to uphold a promise of secrecy; to advance the

public interest.

What should doctors say, for example, to a 46-year-old man coming in for a routine physical checkup just before going on vacation with his family who, though he feels in perfect health, is found to have a form of cancer that will cause him to die within six months? Is it best to tell him the truth? If he asks, should the doctor reject that he is ill, or minimize the gravity of the illness? Should they at least hide the truth until after the family vacation?

Doctors face such choices often. At times, they see important reasons to lie for t he patient’s own sake; in their eyes, such lies differ sharply from self-serving ones.

Studies show that most doctors sincerely believe that the seriously ill patients do not want to know the truth about their condition, and that informing them risks destroys their hope, so that they may recover more slowly, or deteriorate (恶化) faster, perhaps even commit suicide (自杀). But other studies show that, contrary to the belief of many physicians, a great majority of patients do want to be told the truth, even about serious illness, and feel cheated when they learn that they have been misled. We are also learning that truthful information, humanly conveyed, helps patients cope with illness: help them tolerate pain better, need less medicine, and even recover faster after operation.

There is an urgent need to debate this issue openly. Not only in medicine, but in other professions as well, practitioners may find themselves repeatedly in difficulty where serious consequences seem avoidable only through deception (欺骗). Yet the public has every reason to know professional deception, for such practices are peculiarly likely to become deeply rooted, to spread, and to trust. Neither in medicine, nor in law, government, or the social sciences can there be comfort in the old saying, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”

32.What is the passage mainly about?

A. Whether patients really want to know the truth of their illness.

B. Whether patients should be told the truth of their illness.

C. Who benefits from deception.

D. Whether doctors are honest with their patients.

33.Which of the following is TRUE?

A. It is true that “What you don’t know can’t hurt you”.

B. Doctors believe that those seriously-ill patients need a family vacation first.

C. Truthful information helps patients deal with their illness in some cases.

D. Many patients don’t want to know the truth, especially about serious illness.

34.What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?

A. There is an urgent need to debate this issue openly.

B. There can be no comfort in the old saying, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”

C. The public has every reason to be cautious of the deception

D. We need to discuss this issue in medicine, but not in other professions.

35.From the passage, we can learn that the author’s attitude to professional deception is _______.

A. supportive

B. indifferent

C. opposed

D. neutral

Federal regulators Wednesday approved a plan to create a nationwide emergency

alert system using text messages delivered to cell phones.

Text messages have exploded in popularity in recent years, particularly among young people. The wireless industry’s trade association, CTIA, estimates more than 48 billions text messages are sent each month.

The plan comes from the Warning Alert and Response Network Act, a 2006 federal law

that requires improvement to the nation’s emergency alert system. The act tasked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) with coming up with new ways to alert the public about emergencies.

“The ability to deliver accurate and timely warning and alerts through cell phones and other mobile services is an important next step in our efforts to help ensure that the American public has the information they need to take action to protect themselves and their families before, and during, disasters and ot her emergencies,” FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said following approval of the plan.

Participation in the alert system by carriers----telecommunications companies----is voluntary, but it has received solid support from the wireless industry.

The program would be optional for cell phone users. They also may not be charged for receiving alerts. There would be three types of messages, according to the rules.

The first would be a national alert from the president, likely involving a terrorists attack or natural dis aster. The second would involve “approaching threats,” which could include natural disasters like hurricanes or storms or even university shootings. The third would be reserved for child abduction (绑架) emergencies, or so-called Amber Alerts.

C. FCC

D. federal regulators

28. The carriers’ participation in the system is determined by _______.

A. They must accept the alert service.

B. They must send the alerts to others.

C. They may enjoy the alert service for free.

D. They may choose the types of

messages.

30. An alert message will not be sent if _______.

A. a terrorist attack occurs

B. a university shooting happens

C. a natural disaster happens

D. a child loses his way

31. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

What's the problem? It's possible that we all have compromised conversational intelligence. It's more likely that none of us start a conversation because it's awkward and challenging, or we think it's annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it's an invaluable social practice that results in big benefits. Dismissing small talk as unimportant is easy, but we can't forget that deep relationships wouldn't even exist if it weren't for casual conversation. Small talk is the grease (润滑剂) for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. "Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk," he explains. "The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them." In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction(互动) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience. "It's not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband," says Dunn. "But interactions with peripheral(边缘的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also." Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense of belonging, a bond with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense
