Two Chinese farmers who became an overnight hit when their heart-rending version of a famous pop song appeared on the Internet took to the stage in front of thousands of fans in Shanghai last Saturday.

Wang Xu, 44,and Liu Gang, 29, sang “In the Spring" alongside the song's star composer Wang Feng, in front of about 80,000 people at the Shanghai Stadium. The audience buzzed with excitement and let out deafening cheers, the moment as they were introduced on the stage and then when Liu started the first sentence of their parts of the song.

The two migrant workers became stars after singing the tearjerker(催人泪下的)song during an evening drinking session in a 6-square-meter rented room in a late August evening. A friend recorded the performance on a cell phone and posted it on

“If someday I am dead, plea se bury me in the spring," they sing. Wang's penetrating chorus, delivered with his eyes closed, has moved thousands to tears. Wang and Liu consider the song a true portrait of lower-class groups like themselves. "With no credit card, no girlfriend, or a home with hot water, but only a guitar, I am singing happily, on streets, under bridges or in wild country, though nobody pays attention to the music," they sing.

To support his wife and two sons, Wang came to Beijing in 2000 from the countryside and has worked as a boiler man, and street peddler, before becoming a medical warehouse keeper, with a monthly pay of around 1,500 yuan. Little is left after he pays 600 yuan for rent and buys food.

Liu came to Beijing in 2002. “I wanted to try my luck in the big city, " he said. He had worked as a guard, roadside peddler, and porter, but never had a stable job. Street performing was his main income, even after he married and became a father three years ago.

C yber language is popular among Chinese netizens, who create English words to reflect novel phenomenon in society.

“Gelivable”, combining pinyin of Chinese characters Geili (giving strength) with the English suffix for adjectives, literally means “giving power”or “cool”. Similarly, “Hengelivable”means "very cool", and “ungelivable”means “dull, not cool at al”. “Antizen” referred to the group of college graduates who, earning a poor salary and living in small rented apartments, are like the tiny and laborious ants.

David Tool, a professor with the Beijing International Studies University said it’s very interesting to combine Chinese with English to create new words. “English is no longer mysterious to the Chinese people. They can use the language in a flexible way according to their own experiences,” he said.Chinese words and expressions were created, as well, by netizens. One example was “Suan Ni Hen”. This three-character expression, which originally meant “you win”with the first character carrying the same pronunciation as garlic in Chinese, is used to satirize(讽刺)high garlic and food prices this winter.

Chinese people use the character “bei” before a verb to show a passive voice, and it is used by netizens to show the helplessness in front of false conclusions and fake media reports. For instance, “zisha” means “suicide” while “beizisha” means “be officially presumed to have committed suicide”, and xiaokang means “fairly comfortable life” while “beixiaokang” means “be said to be living a fairly comfortable life”.

Wu Zhongmin, a professor at the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, saw the phenomenon of word creation as a natural response of young people to social issues. “Cyber language is more vivid and it shortens people’s distances,” he said.

60.The passage mainly tells us that .

A.cyber language is popular among all people

B.cyber language is of great fun

C.cyber language needs to be taught at college

D.cyber language in China is popular for it’s relation with society 61.Which of the following is NOT true?

B.Antizens live in small rented apartments with small salaries.

C.Suan Ni Hen refers to the highest food prices ever.

D.Beixiaokang means “be said” to be living a comfortable life.

62.What can we infer from the phenomenon of word creation?

A.It’s getting more difficult to understand cyber language.

B.Y oung people are more likely to respond to nature.

C.Social phenomena are more easily reflected in cyber language.

D.The best way to create new cyber words is to combine Chinese and English. 63.Chinese netizens created English words by .

A.combining pinyin of Chinese characters with the English.去掉suffix

B.using the character carrying the same pronunciation

C.combining Chinese characters with the English

D.putting the character “bei” before an English word

Should parents ever hit their children?

Research suggests many of us are likely to respond “no”, and public support for spanking(打屁股)has been falling over the years. But surveys also show that 75 percent to nearly 90 percent of parents admit to spanking their child at least once.

I was raised in a zero-tolerance home for disrespect, and my parents often turned to physical punishment. And, no, I don' t feel I was damaged by it.Nothing is more annoying than watching ill-mannered behavior from children. But there is data to suggest that a return to old-school spanking isn't the answer.

Two years ago, Newsweek reported that it had found data suggesting that teens whose parents used physical punishment were more likely to become aggressive.Murray Straus, professor at the University of New Hampshire in America, has studied the topic of children and spanking for decades. He said that children who were physically punished have lower IQs than their peers. It may be that children with lower IQs were more likely to get spanked, but the punishment may have been counterproductive(反作用的)to their mental development, as well. Some researchers make the argument that occasional open-handed smacks(用巴掌打)on the bottom are not only harmless but can have some benefit.Last year, Marjorie Gunnoe, a psychologist at Calvin College, studied teens who have never spanked. There are a greater number of children growing up without ever having been physically punished.Gunnoe’s research suggests they don' t turn out any better than those who were sometimes spank.

There are some parents who simply cannot control their tempers(脾气).But I still believe that the best parents are the ones who are able to offer fair and firm discipline without ever turning to physical punishment.

68.According to the first three paragraphs, the author was probably hit by her parents when .

A.they were dissatisfied with her grade

B.she showed no respect for the elder

C.they cannot control their temper

D.their discipline turns out to be not strict enough

69.According to Murray Straus, children who are physically punished____ _.A.are less aggressive toward others when they get older

B.have slower physical development

C.benefit from occasional spanking

D.may develop lower IQs than their peer

70.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?

A.40 percent of children grow up without ever being spanked

B.Children who suffer less physical punishment are better students

C.Occasional open-handed spanking on the bottom are mentally harmful

D.Researchers disagree over whether smacking is mentally harmful to children 71.The author seems to agree that _ _____.

A.parents should determine whether a child needs to be smacked or not

B.children who have been spanked tend to behave better than those who haven't C.good parents discipline their children in a fair and reasonable way

D.physical punishment should be the last resort(手段) of any parent

E

In Greek mythology (神话), fire is a gift from the God, stolen from Zeus(宙斯)by Prometheus and handed over to human suffering from cold. What could be more natural than sitting around a beautiful fire on a winter night, at a campsite in the Berkshires?

Hard as it may be to believe, the fireplace—long considered a trophy (奖杯), particularly in a city like New Y ork —is acquiring a social shame.Among those who desire to be environmentally responsible , it is joining the ranks of bottled water and big houses.

Sally Treadwell, a 51-year-old public relations

executive in Boone, N.C., said nothing makes her

happier than building a fire on a cold winter night.

But most of the time she doesn’t, because she feels

too guilty about the damage it may do to the

environment. Every time she builds a fire, it

causes “inner conflict,” she said. “It’s a guilty

pleasure.”“The smoke from a fire smells very nice,” said

Diane Baileym a senior scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council in San Francisco. “But it can cause a lot of harm.”

The tiny particles (颗粒)can cause illness, and can cross into the bloodstream, causing heart attacks as well as worsening other conditions.

Growing concerns about the air pollution and health problems caused by smoke from wood fires are urging a number of areas across the country to pass laws regulating them.Idaho offers a tax cut to people who replace uncertified(不合格)wood stoves with “greene” ones; San Joaquin County in California for-bids selling a home unless its wood stove is replaced with an E.P.A.-certified one; and Palo Alto and other governments in California forbid wood-burning fireplaces in new construction.

Certainly, many think otherwise. In any case, most fireplaces are used far too infrequently to cause any real damage to the environment, said Stephen Sears, the vice president of the Brick Industry Association , voicing an opinion shared by some.

Perhaps not coincidentally, sales of wood-burning equipment dropped to 235,000 in 2009 from 800,000 in 1999, according to the Brick Industry Association. It also reports that approximately 35,000 fireplaces were installed in the United States in 2009, compared to 80,000 in 2005.Certainly those numbers reflect the economic slowdown, but they may also be affected by growing mixed feelings to wood fires.

72.We can infer from the 2nd paragraph that ____.

A.a fireplace is viewed as a sign of success

B.bottled water is a good companion for a fireplace

C.big houses are not considered environment-friendly

D.people in New Y ork are laughed at for their tradition

73.Sally’s “inner conflict” in 3rd paragraph resulted from ____.

A.her mixed emotion for the fireplace

B.the damage to the environment

C.the concern about her health

D.her love for the fireplace

74.In terms of the regulations about wood fire we can learn from the passage that .

A.uncertified fireplaces are forbidden in Edaho.

B.only energy-efficient wood stove can be used in U.S.A.

C.some people are against the wood-fire controlling regulations

D.all the people support measures taken to control the use of fireplaces 75.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A.To urge people to burn less wood.

B.To discuss wood-burning’s impact.

C.To indicate the cooling love for the fireplace.

D.To throw light on the causes of the fireplace’s decline.

High school is regarded as the best time in a person’s life. As a senior three student, it won’t take long before I graduate. Now, I have much to share with my fellow students.

Firstly, I would like to show my appreciation to those standing by me all the way, teachers, parents and friends included. Without their help and advice, my life would be different. Secondly, it's high time to say sorry to classmates whom I hurt or misunderstood. Communication and smiles act as bridges to friendship. Above all, I’ve made up my mind to make every effort to study, for I believe hard work is the key to success. Just as the old saying goes, “no pains, no gains.”

Finally I hope that all the younger fellows can make full use of time, because time and tide wait for no men.
