1. Life is good
Life is difficult, life is unfair, life is challenging and sometimes painful. And life is so very good.
There are frustrations, tragedies, disappointments, setbacks, heartbreaks, and absurdities. The simple joy of being outweighs them all.
Life is good, because within its realm, anything is possible. Life is good, because no matter how far you fall, there is always a way to climb back up again.
You can complain, fret and worry about all the problems in your life, but you’ll be wasting your time. Or, you can choose to focus on why and how life is so good, and on what you can do to take that goodness and make it even better.
Not only is life good, it’s uniquely good for you in your very own way. The possibilities for expressing your purpose are limited only by your imagination. Remind yourself often of the great and wonderful value that you already, always have. Life is good, and in this moment that’s bursting with possibilities, life is yours.
2. Time at hand
You can’t make more hours in each day. Yet you can put more purpose and focus and meaning in each hour.
Blaming a lack of time is like blaming the sun for rising. There’s nothing you can do about it, so it’s not a factor to concern yourself with.
What you can do, is make the commitment to yourself to make each moment count for something meaningful and valuable. What you can do, is allow your authentic purpose to guide your focus, your actions and your use of the time that’s at hand. Instead of worrying or being distracted about things that really don’t even matter, give your energy to what you truly care about. Instead of letting the time slip away, allow the best of your dreams to more fully unfold with each passing moment. Remember constantly who you really are and why you have chosen to go in the direction you’re going. Every thought, word and action that comes from your true purpose will draw great value from the moment you’re in.
Whatever your age or situation, there’s plenty of time to live richly. And that time is here right now.
3. Much to work with
Today, you’re more experienced and more knowledgeable than you’ve ever been. And that makes you more capable of achievement than ever before.
If you’ve attempted something in the past and been disappointed, today you can make another stronger, more experienced and more informed attempt. Today you could very well make a breakthrough.
Living the moments of your life certainly takes its toll. And yet, in living through those many days and hours you continually add value and substance to the whole of your experience.
Now is when you can tap into that value. Now is when you can achieve in a way that’s more meaningful and effective than anything you’ve previously known.
The joys, the pains, the challenges, the triumphs, the disappointments and the moments of unspeakable beauty all add to the richness of your being. The opportunity you now have is to express that richness in new and fulfilling ways.
Whatever life may have given you, it has given you much to work with. See the value, make thankful and meaningful use of it, and live the richness that continues to grow within you.
4. You can handle it
Sometimes a breakthrough comes on its own. Most times, though, you experience a breakthrough when you have no other choice.
When your back is up agains t the wall, you’re going to find a way to get through that wall. Even if it once seemed solid and impermeable, when you must get through you’ll find a way through.
It’s good to get out in front of your challenges, and to plan in advance for what you think will happen. Yet even when the unexpected happens, and even when it feels completely overwhelming, you have what it takes to successfully make it through. When you must, you will. Keeping that in mind will give you the confidence to step positively forward every day, in matters both large and small.
Though it’s smart to carefully plan, it is truly a waste of time to worry. For even if the worst does come to pass, you have what it takes to make the very best of it.
Take a rich, deep breath of fresh air, and feel your confidence grow. Jump joyfully and enthusiastically into life, knowing you can handle whatever may come.
5. Better to do it right
It’s tempting to compromise and take a shortcut. It’s better to do it right.
What’s the point of giving, when you give less than you’re capable of giving? If you’ve decided something is worth doing, then it’s worth doing in the best way you know how.
If you seek to cheat life, you end up cheating yourself. Choose instead to deliver more than you promise, and even if no one else notices, it is still worth all the effort. Because one very important person will notice. That person is you.
Your own authentic perception of yourself is far more important to you than what anyone else thinks. Living with absolute integrity is what will raise that perception to its highest level.
Life is too precious and too full of positive possibilities to cheat yourself out of even a moment of it. You owe it to yourself to do it right.
6. The best you’ve ever been
With all its imperfections and challenges, today is still the best day yet. Though you may have known much love and joy and fulfillment in the past, you can experience even more today.
For you can bring with you to this day the best of all you’ve ever known, and then you can add to its beauty. On top of that, you can leave behind the disappointments and limiting assumptions that have held you back, and free yourself to truly soar. Sure, there are problems that you will face. Yet you can face them with a lifetime of wisdom and experie nce, more today than you’ve ever had before.
You’re better prepared than ever to transform those problems into opportunities. And you’re more determined than ever to transform the best of those opportunities into real, meaningful value.
All of what you’ve been through has made you stronger and more capable, in ways that you’re not even fully aware of yet. Today you can choose to use that ever-growing strength and ability in the service of your most treasured visions. Whatever else may be going on, in many i mportant and powerful ways you’re the best you’ve ever been. Grab the opportunity that is today, and make it into something great.

8. The life I desired
That must be the story of innumerable couples, and the pattern of life of life it offers has a homely grace. It reminds you of a placid rivulet, meandering smoothly through green pastures and shaded by pleasant trees, till at last it falls into the vast sea; but the sea is so calm, so silent, so indifferent, that you are troubled suddenly by a vague uneasiness. There would be great people and ordinary people and little people, but the great would always be those who had done great things, and never the idiot whose mothers had spoiled them and whose fathers had left a hundred thousand a year; and the little would be persons of small minds and mean characters, and not poor persons who had never had a chance. That is why idiots are always in favour of inequality of income (their only chance of eminence), and the really great in favour of equality.
10. American dream
To Americans, industriousness, thrift and ambition are positive values. We encourage our children to be competitive, to get ahead, to make money, to acquire possession. In games and in business alike, the aim is to win the game, the trophy, the contract. We go in for labor-saving devices, gadgets, speed and shortcuts. We think every young couple should set up a home of their own. And we pity the couple who must share their home with their parent, let alone with other relatives. Actually, of course, not all Americans hold all these values. And those who do may hold other, and at times contradictory, values that affect their ways of behaving. In the main, however, the collective expectation of our society is that these are desirable goals, and the individual, whatever his personal inclination, is under considerable pressure to conform.
11. The study of Words
The study of words is not merely something that has to do with literature. Words are your tools of thought. You can't even think at all without them. Try it. If you are planning to go down town this afternoon you will find that you are saying to yourself: "I think I will go down town this afternoon." You can't make such a simple decision as this without using words.
Without words you could make no decisions and from no judgments whatsoever. A pianist may have the most beautiful tunes in his head, but if he had only five keys on his piano he would never get more than a fraction of these tunes out.
Your words are your keys for your thoughts. And the more words you have at your command the deeper, clearer and more accurate will be your thinking.
A command of English will not only improve the processes of your mind. It will give you assurance; build your self-confidence; lend color to your personality; increase your popularity. Your words are your personality. Your vocabulary is you. And your words are all that we, your friends, have to know and judge you by. You have no other medium for telling us your thoughts--for convincing us, persuading us, giving us orders.
12. Thank you for being here
Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same. The best kind of friend is the one you could sit on a porch with, never saying a word, and walk away feeling like that was the best conversation you've had. A good friend is a connection to life - a tie to the past, a road to the future, the key to sanity in a totally insane world. I always felt that the great high privilege, relief and comfort of friendship was that one had to explain nothing. In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.
13. Try to Remember the Good Things
When times become difficult (and you know they sometimes will), remember a moment in your life that was filled with joy and happiness. Remember how it made you feel, and you will have the strength you need to get through any trial. When life throws you one more obstacle than you think you can handle, remember something you achieved through perseverance and by struggling to the end. In doing so, you'll find you have the ability to overcome each obstacle brought your way. When you find yourself drained and depleted of energy, remember to find a place of sanctuary and rest. Take the necessary time in your own life to dream your dreams and renew your energy, so you'll be ready to face each new day. When you feel tension building, find something fun to do. You'll find that the stress you feel will dissipate and your thoughts will become clearer. When you're faced with so many negative and draining situations, realize how minuscule problems will seem when you view your life as a whole--and remember the positive things.
14. Happiness is a journey
For a long time it seemed to me that life was about to begin , real life. But, there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served or a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment that you have and treasure it more because you share it with
someone special, someone special enough to spend your time with. Make the most of your time. Don’t waste too much of your time studying, working, or stressing about something that seems important. Do what you want to do to be happy but also do what you can to make the people you care about happy. Remember that time waits for no one. So stop waiting until you take your last test, until you finish school, until you go back to school, until you have the perfect body, the perfect car, or whatever other perfect thing you desire. Stop waiting until the weekend, when you can party or let loose, until summer, spring, fall or winter, until you find the right person and get married, until you die, until your born again, to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy. Professional singers and players have great responsibilities, for the composer is utterly dependent on them. A student of music needs as long and as arduous a training to become a performer as a medical student needs to become a doctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscular proficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singers practice breathing every day, as their vocal chords would be inadequate without controlled muscular support.
