Unit One

Part I A Brief Introduction of Movie History

The history of film began in the late 1880s with the invention of the first movie cinema. Motion pictures were initially exhibited as a carnival novelty and developed to one of the most important tools of communication and entertainment, and mass media in the 20th century and into the 21st century. Most films before 1930 were silent. Motion picture films have substantially affected the art, technology, and politics.

The movie theatre was considered a cheaper, simpler way to provide entertainment to the masses. Movies became the most popular visual art form of the late Victorian age. It was simpler because of the fact that before the cinema people would have to travel long distances to see major dioramas or amusement parks. With the advent of the cinema this changed. During the first decade

of the cinema's existence, inventors worked to improve the machines for making and showing films.

1895 to 1906: The first eleven years of motion pictures show the cinema moving from a novelty to an established large-scale entertainment industry. The films represent a movement from

films consisting of one shot, completely made by one person with a few assistants, towards films several minutes long consisting of several shots, which were made by large

companies in something like industrial conditions.

The 1940s: the war and post-war years

The 1960s: During the 1960s, the studio system in Hollywood declined, because many films were now being made on location in other countries, or using studio facilities abroad, such as

Pinewood in the UK and Cinecitta in Rome. "Hollywood" films were still largely aimed at family audiences, and it was often the more old-fashioned films that produced the studios'

biggest successes. Productions like Mary Poppins (1964), My Fair Lady (1964) and The

Sound of Music (1965) were among the biggest money-makers of the decade. The growth in independent producers and production companies, and the increase in the power of

individual actors also contributed to the decline of traditional Hollywood studio production

The 1990s: New special effects, independent films, and DVDs

The early 1990s saw the development of a commercially successful independent cinema in the United States. Although cinema was increasingly dominated by special-effects films such as Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Jurassic Park (1993) and Titanic (1997), the latter of which became the highest-grossing film of all time at the time, independent films like Steven Soderbergh’s Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989) and Quentin Tarantine 's Reservoir Dogs (1992) had significant commercial success both at the cinema and on home video. Filmmakers associated with the Danish film movement Dogme 95 introduced a manifesto aimed to purify filmmaking. Its first few films gained worldwide critical acclaim, after which the movement slowly faded out. 2010s: After James Cameron's 3D film Avatar became the highest-grossing film of all time, 3D films have gained increasing popularity with many other films being released in 3D, with

the best critical and financial successes being in the field of feature film animation such as

DreamWorks 's H ow T o T rain Y our D ragon a nd W alt D isney P ictures/Pixar’s T oy

Story 3. Avatar is also note-worthy for pioneering highly sophisticated use of motion

capture technology and influencing several other films such as Rise of the Planet of the

Apes.

As of 2010, the largest film industries by number of feature films produced are those of India, the United States and China.

The Long Tail: One major new development in the early 21st century is the development of systems that make it much easier for regular people to write, shoot, edit and distribute their own films without the large apparatus of the film industry. This phenomenon and its repercussions are outlined in Chris Anderson’s theory, The Long Tail.

The film of an era can well reflect the culture and customs of this era. In the very same way the movie of a country serves as the best mirror of the country’s culture and customs.

Lost and Found

远在天边

Part I Information on the Background and Culture Studio aka has completed a 25-minute film adaptation of the children’s book Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers . The film, directed by Philip Hunt, will debut on the UK’s Channel Four on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. It’s about the friendship that develops between a boy and a lost penguin who shows up at his doorstep. The film is narrated by Jim Broadbent and scored by composer Max Richter (Waltz With Bashir). It sounds like a charming film and looks promising too. The short film also sends us thinking about the value of friendship.

It all began with someone lost and someone found; who is to say which was which?

Episode 1

It was an early autumn morning, just as the leaves were beginning to fall when an unexpected visitor arrived at a little town by the sea and with him began a remarkable story. Elsewhere on this particular morning a small boy was getting up much in the same way that he always did, looking

forward to his normal routine, in his usual way! But today was going to be anything but ordinary!

First impressions are a funny thing, and it’s always wise to take a moment to consider this when something new turns up on your step! To the boy this all seemed a bit worrisome! And yet he was not the person to ignore someone who might need his help and in any case his curiosity tended to get the better of it and this was so very curious! And even so, an uninvited guest could be a difficult situation at the best of times especially when some visitors just don’t know that they’ve already outstayed their welcome!! And so in a tricky situation it’s best to follow all the correct procedures. But in this case there was a problem that would not be solved easily!

Episode 2

Now, anyone could be forgiven when faced with such an uninvited visitor for choosing the easy way out. Then again some people just don’t have it in them to do anything other than the right thing. As the day unfolded, the small boy began to realize that helping this stranger find the way home was a bigger problem than he had first thought! And all this distraction was getting them nowhere, so the boy decided that some proper thinking was called for.

So much for the best-laid plans, as too often a small voice is not heard in a wider world! Yet when things aren’t going quite the way they should, it occurs to some that if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing yourself. A boat is a wondrous thing. It carries with it all the possibilities you can think of in this world and with a little planning and a little daring, you can imagine all kinds of grand adventures! And so the boy worked out an ambitious plan to get his visitor back where he belonged; but he never stopped to consider for a moment just what his visitor was doing there in the first place! Late into the night the small boy slept fitfully for tomorrow he was going to try to cross the ocean to the other side of the world.

Episode 3

Another beautiful morning and all the preparations were in place. And for those who cared to look, the little boat could be seen setting out on a tremendous and uncertain journey...

The day gave way to the night just as things seemed to be working out well, they began to take turns for the worse! The very long way from shore, the small boat and both on board were about to find out just what the sea could do.

Episode 4

And there it flickered: The South Pole! Finally the boy’s work was done! His task was

complete! It’s harder than you think to say goodbye to someone who’s become part of your life... especially when you haven’t noticed it happening... And so this particular farewell is much harder than the boy imagined it would be; for although a parting is always sad an awkward one is even more so. But you do what you have to do and just get on with things. Suddenly the boy understood that perhaps someone wasn’t lost but really is lonely and maybe they weren’t the only one.

It all began with someone lost and someone found; who is to say which was which? There was a boy and there was a penguin, strangers from opposite sides of the ocean. And like the beginning of any friendship, there’s this remarkable story indeed!!

Exercise 3: Writing a Review

Directions: Write a review of the given movie, sharing your feelings and thoughts on the story.

Unit Three

Beauty and the Beast

美女与野兽

Part I Information on the Background and Culture

Beauty and the Beast is a 1991 American animated musical romantic fantasy film produced

by Walt Disney Feature Animation and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. Beauty and the Beast is based on the fairy tale La Belle et Bete by Jeanne Marie. The film tells the story of a handsome prince who is transformed into a hideous beast as punishment for his selfish actions. To become human again, the Beast must earn the love of a beautiful young woman that he imprisons in his castle, lest he remain a beast forever.

Directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, and produced by Don Hahn, the film was written by Roger Allers, Brenda Chapman, and Chris Sanders, with a screenplay by Linda Woolverton. Originally, the film was to have been by directed by English director Richard Purdum, but he resigned following the studio's decision to turn Beauty and the Beast into a musical. Howard Ashman and Alan Menken wrote the film's songs, while Menken composed its score. Ashman, who also served as executive producer on the film, died of AIDS related complications eight months before the film's release. The film is dedicated to him in his memory.

Beauty and the Beast was released on November 22, 1991 to positive reviews. The film was a significant commercial success during its initial release, and has since then garnered over $424

million in box office earnings. Beauty and the Beast was nominated for several awards, winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Famously, Beauty and the

Beast was the first-ever animated film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, remaining the only animated film to hold this honor until 2009 when the Academy expanded the number of nominees and Pixar’s Up was nominated. Beauty and the Beast received five additional Academy Award nominations, including Best Original Score, Best Sound, and three separate nominations for Best Original Song. Ultimately, Beauty and the Beast won Best Original Score, and Best Original Song went to its title song. In 2002, Beauty and the Beast was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

In April 1994, Beauty and the Beast became Disney's first animated film to be adapted into

a Broadway musical. The success of the film spawned two related animated films The Enchanted Christmas, released in 1997, and Belle’s Magical World, released in 1998.. After the success of the

3D re-release of The Lion King, the film returned to theaters in 3D under supervision of John Lasseter on January 13, 2012.

The film is a good reflection on the values of beauty and love in westerners’ eyes.

Once upon a time in a faraway land a young prince lived in a shining castle. Although he had everything his heart desired, the prince was spoiled, selfish and unkind. But then, ……

If

he

could learn to love another and earn her love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time. As the years passed, he fell into despair and lost all hope, for who could ever learn to love a beast?

An Analysis to Some Movies Linked With Disaster 英语0805班帅凌08050523 Disaster films based on the human catastrophe caused by the natural disasters. General rendering thrilling disaster, to stimulate the audience's fear, and some performance out of the way to disaster and defeat or avoid the disaster of wisdom, or to promote rescue and other non-rational religion.Their typical features are large casts and multiple plotlines, and focus on the characters' attempts to avert, escape, or cope with the aftermath of the disaster. One major character, several minor characters, and scores of extras typically die before the story is resolved. The disaster film genre revived, briefly, in the mid-1990s—perhaps because new special effects techniques made more spectacular disasters possible. The first film in this new trend was the 1996 Michael Crichton-penned film Twister, followed in the same year by Independence Day merged a science fiction alien invasion plot from the 1950s with disaster film conventions (most notably, from Earthquake). Also in 1997 the epic James Cameron film Titanic was released, which combined the disaster genre in the sinking of the ship and the romance genre with the relationship between the main characters.
