三. Reading:

A

So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for children that which only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that “reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible”.

Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity. It can be seen and observed.

Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny.

If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children.”

When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.

A Tight Situation

Sometimes funny memories are the most special way to remember a beloved lover. It helps take away some of the feeling of loss. Before he passed away, my husband loved to share this story with our friends. Now, it makes me smile to share this story with you.

Our neighbor’s son was getting married in 1971 at a church, and we were invited. We immediately rushed into the store, and I bought a nice pink dress with a jacket. The dress was a little tight, but I had a month before the June 30 wedding and I would lose a few pounds.

June 29 came and, of course, I had not lost a single pound; in fact, I had gained two. But I thought a new girdle would solve my problem. So on our way to the wedding, we stopped once again at the store. I ran in and told the clerk I needed a large girdle.

The clerk turned the box around with the girdle, marked “L”, and asked if I would like to try it on. “Oh, no, large will fit just right. I won’t need to try it on.”

The next morning was hot, so I waited to get dressed until about forty-five minutes before the time to go. I opened the girdle box only to find a new $49.95 girdle in a small size. Since it was too late to find another one and the dress wouldn’t fit right without a girdle, a fight broke out between me and the girdle. Have you ever tried to shake twenty pounds of potatoes into a five-pound bag? Finally, my husband, laughing like crazy, got hold of each side and shook me down into it, and I was ready to go.

As we walked into the church, he asked if I could make it. Now, he was getting worried because I was breathing strangely. I told him that it would last one hour, twenty-two minutes and

eight and one half seconds----the minister blessed everything except my girdle!

My knees were blue and my legs lost all feeling. My husband was asking questions and trying to comfort me.

As soon as the minister pronounced them married, I rushed out with my husband. “Please, just get me out of here!” I said.

We ran out to our car, and once there he opened the front and back passenger doors against the next car. Right there, before God and the wedding party, I took off that girdle. Then the girdle flew out of my hand and landed under the car next to ours. My husband was laughing very hard. We drove, finally, away.

Over the years, he and I had often wondered what the people of that church thought the next morning when they found $49.95, small-sized girdle in their parking lot.

During the twentieth century there has been a great change in the lives of women. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century probably would have been in her mid twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which chance and health made it unusual for her to find paid work. Today, many women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five. She is expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until sixty.

This is an important change in women’s economic position. Even a few years ago, most girls left school and took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school leaving age is sixteen; many girls stay at school after that age, and though women may marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to full or part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage relationships, with the husband accepting

a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life.

9. One reason why a woman of today may take a job is that she _____.

To face the music

Like every language, American English is full of special expressions, phrases that come from the day-to-day life of the people and develop in their own way. Our expression today is “to face the music”.

When someone says, “Well, I guess I’ll have to face the music.”it does not mean he’s planning to go to the concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you didn’t do this or that. Sour music indeed, but it has to be faced. At sometime or another every one of us has had to face the music, especially as children. We can all remember father’s angry voice, “ I want to talk to you,” and only because we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was!

The phrase “to face the music” is familiar to every American, young or old. It is at least 100 years old. And where did this expression come from? The first explanation comes from the American novelist, James Fenimore Cooper. He said, in 1851, that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on the stage. When they got their cue to go on, they often said, “Well, it’s time to face the music.”And that is exactly what they did----facing the orchestra which was just below them. And an actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of an audience that might be friendly or perhaps hostile, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So he expression “to face the music” came to mean “ having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.

Other explanations about the expression go back to the army. When the men faced inspection by their leader, the soldiers would be worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean, shinny enough to pass inspection? Still the men had to go on and face the music of the band as well as the inspection. What else could they do?

Another army explanation is more closely related to the idea of facing the results and accepting the responsibility for something that should not have been done. As, for example, when a man is forced out of the army because he did something terrible, he is dishonored. The band does not play. Only the drums tap a sad, slow beat. The soldier is forced to leave, facing such music as it is and facing the back of his horse.
