I managed to get into my wool snow trousers. But I struggled on my jacket because it didn't fit well.It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes. At least my hat and scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots(靴子).

In her calm, motherly voice she said, “By the end of winter, you will all be able to put on your own boots.” I didn't realize at time that this was more a statement of hope than of confidence(信心).

I handed her my boots and stuck out my foot.Like most children, I expected grown-ups to do all the work. After much pushing, she managed to get the first one into place and then, with a sigh(叹气) worked the second one on too.

I said, “They're on the wrong feet.”

Groban liked musical theatre and opera. At the same time,he listened to pop music.Although he was inspired by music from an early age,Groban was not an early

singer.A turning point came in the seventh grade when his teacher chose students to sing in the school's show.Groban surprised the teacher with his voice and was arranged to perform a solo(独唱).However,it did not make him particularly popular with kids of his own age.“When you're in the seventh grade and everybody's listening to rap,it's not the coolest thing to discover you have a voice like mine,”he said,“I'm not performing for the classical crowd.I'm performing for people who like all different kinds of music.” After the performance, however,Groban realized that singing was something he could do to stand out.

When he was seventeen years old, composer Darid Foster looked for someone to sing at a coming celebrity(名人)event.Seth Riggs,Groban's teacher, sent Foster Groban's recording, which caught Foster's attention.

A few weeks later,Groban was arranged to sing a duet (二重唱)with Celine Dion. When he took the stage with Dion,he was highly praised as the young man with the impressively grown-up voice. Comedian Rosie O'Donnell took a quick liking to Groban and invited him to appear on her talk show, calling him “Opera Boy”.

Since being discovered by Foster in 1999,Groban has been working almost nonstop, either traveling, performing,or in the recording studio, but he doesn't complain. When asked where he sees himself in ten years,he replied,“I'd like to be able to say that I put my foot in a little of everything, but that I did it intelligently. And if I make mistakes,I want to know that I learned from them.

To be successful in any aspect of life, you need to know when to use the carrot or the stick.

Here are a few tips to help you decide whether it's better to use the carrot or the stick.

With the kids

The carrot

When it comes to raising a kid,the carrot or the stick dilemma is quickly disappearing as too many parents take the carrot approach to the extreme. In child rearing, the carrot should never be materialistic things. If you want to ask for good behavior with a reward,it should be with something that can't be bought.Say,trust.

The stick

Nowadays,no one likes to use the stick anymore,or in my father's case, the belt.I'm not overlooking child abuse,if you even want to call it that, but I am encouraging parents to toughen up a bit.You don't want your kid to test your limits only to find out he can get away with it.If you want to raise a kid, raise the hand and let him know it comes down on the second offense.

At the office

The carrot

People need encouragement and incentives to perform well. However, the carrot only really works well with employees who have already proved themselves. If you've got someone who can't show up at the office before noon, the promise of a raise isn't going

to do much.On the contrary,if there's a guy with a good work ethic,he'll thrive when you add a promotion to the picture.

The stick

When considering the carrot or the stick in the office, remember that, overall, the stick is the more practical method in the office.A wise man,who just happened to be an Italian, once said “It's best to be both loved and feared.” It's tempting to have everyone love you,but running a business isn't like running a family. You need to have the stick constantly raised.

With the wife

The carrot

When it comes to marriage, always use the carrot.I've had a lovely marriage for many years, and I've always stuck to the carrot approach.

Sometimes you catch more flies with honey, and sometimes it's the crack of a whip that gets the horse moving.Try not to use too many sticks in the bedroom;the carrot is much more fun.

64.What does the underlined word “rearing” mean?

A.Teaching. B.Raising.

C.Diet. D.Caring.

文章的“With the kids”部分提到了“When it comes to raising a kid”,并且这部分是说在抚养孩子的过程中,应采取胡萝卜政策还是大棒政策。

65.In kids raising,the author prefers ________.

A.the carrot approach

B.the stick approach

C.both the carrot approach and the stick approach

D.neither the carrot approach nor the stick approach

从文中“I'm not overlooking child abuse...encouraging parents to toughen up a bit”可知,作者更喜欢用“大棒政策”来教育孩子。] 66.Which do you think is the best to be a good boss at the office?

A.Always using carrots. B.Eating a lot of carrots.

C.Being both loved and feared. D.Using too many sticks.

67.Which is NOT true according to the passage?

B.The carrot is much more fun when it comes to marriage.

C.On different occasions, the carrot or the stick is effective.

D.You need more sticks to get your horses to move faster occasionally.

When people can only communicate with hand gestures, they speak a kind of “universal language,” says a new study.

To help settle a long-running discussion about whether the language influences the way we think, psychologists tested 40 speakers of four different languages:10 English,10 Chinese,10 Spanish and 10 Turkish speakers, first asking them to describe an action in a video in speech, then only with gestures.

What was surprising was that, when asked to describe the same scenes using only their hands, all of the adults,no matter what language they spoke, produced the same order:subject-object-verb.

Meanwhile, when asked to describe the scenes in speech, the speakers used the word orders of their own languages.

English,Spanish, and Chinese speakers first produced the subject, followed by the verb, and then the object.

Turkish speakers first produced the subject, followed by the object, and then the verb. “Not surprisingly, speakers of different languages describe events using the word orders limited by their language. The surprise is that when the same speakers are asked to ‘speak’ with their hands and not their mouths, they ignore these orders—they use exactly the same order when they gesture,” said Professor Goldin-Meadow.

The research challenges the idea that the language we speak shapes the way we think when we are not speaking.“There appears to be a natural order that humans use when asked to show events nonverbally,” said Professor Goldin-Meadow.

韩礼德(M.A.K. Halliday)在他的著作《英语衔接》(Halliday and Hasan,1976)中,将语篇定义为”any passage, spoken or written, of whatever length, that does form a unified whole”。

A Organic food is very popular. It is also expensive. Some organic food costs twice as much as non-organic food. Some parents and pet owners pay up to 200 percent more for organic food while some people think organic food is a waste of money. There is one main difference between organic and non-organic food. Organic farms do not use agricultural chemicals, such as pesticides (杀虫剂). This guarantees that the products are natural. Some people think “organic” means “locally grown”. Originally this was true. Over time organic farming became more difficult. The demand for organic food grew larger than the supply. Small companies had to sell out to large companies. There weren't enough organic materials. This made it difficult for many organic companies to stay in business. Today, many large companies have an organic line of products. Is organic food more nutritious This is part of the debate. Many farmers and consumers (消费者) believe it is. They think agricultural chemicals cause health problems, such as cancer. Many health professionals disagree. Few studies prove that organic food prevents health problems. Health specialists worry more about bacteria. These can come into contact with organic and non-organic food.
