第二部分阅读理解(每题2分,共40分)

第一节选择型阅读(共4篇,每题2分,共30分)

A

When something goes wrong,it can be very satisfying to say,”Well, it’s so-and-so’s fault.” or “I know I’m late, but it’s not my fault;the car broke down.”It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.

Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don’t rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well.

This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on “whose fault it is.” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stone for

success.

A. blame him for his lack of responsibility

B. find a better way to handle the problem

C. tell him to find the cause of the problem

D. ask a more able colleague for help

24. When problems occur, winners take them as .

A. excuses for their failures

B. barriers to greater power

C. chances for self-development

D. challenges to their colleagues

B

Though the facts that too many people on earth and a too rapid increase in the number added each year are not in argument, we always begin the discussion of "population as global issue" with what most persons mean like this. It was quite right to compare demographic growth to "a long, thin powder fuse(导火线)that bums steadily and hesitatingly until it finally reaches the charge and explodes".

To understand the current situation, which is characterized by rapid increases in population, it is necessary to understand the history of population trends. Rapid growth is a comparatively recent phenomenon. Looking back at the 8,000 years of demographic history, we find that populations have been virtually stable or growing very slightly for most of human history. For most of our ancestors, life was hard, often nasty, and very short. There was high fertility(生育)in most places, but this was usually balanced by high mortality. For most of human history, it was seldom the case that one in ten persons would live past forty, while infancy and childhood were especially risky periods. Often, societies were in clear danger of extinction because

death rates could exceed their birthrates. Thus, the population problem throughout most of history was how to prevent extinction of the human race.

This pattern is important to notice. Not only does it put the current problems of demographic growth into ahistorical perspective, but it suggests that the cause of rapid increase in population in recent years is not a sudden enthusiasm for more children, but an improvement in the conditions that traditionally have caused high mortality.

Demographic history can be divided into two major periods: a time of long, slow growth which extended from about 8000 B.C. till approximately 1650 A.D. In the first period of some 9,600 years, the population increased from some 8 million to 500 million in 1650. Between 1650 and 1975, the population has increased from 500 million to more than 4 billion. And the population reached 6.2 billion throughout the world by the year 2000, One way to appreciate this dramatic difference in such abstract numbers is to reduce the time frame to something that is more manageable. Between 8000 B.C. and 1650, an average of only 50,000 persons was being added annually to the world's population, At present, this number is added every six hours. The increase is about 800000,000 persons annually.

A. extinction of human

B. statistics of human population

D. development of human population

26. Which of the following demographic growth patterns is most similar to the long thin powder fuse?

A. A slow growth for a long time and then a period of rapid, dramatic increase.

B. Too many people on earth and a few rapid increases in the number added each year.

C. A virtually stable or slightly decreasing period and then a sudden explosion of population.

D. A long period when death rates exceed birthrates and then a short period with higher fertility and lowermortality.

27. During the first period of demographic history, societies were often in danger of extinction because .

A. only one in ten persons could live past 40.

B. our ancestors had little enthusiasm for more children

C. there was higher mortality than fertility in most places

D. it was too dangerous to have babies due to the poor conditions

Just three days after hitting the screen across China, the Chinese animation (动画) film “Monkey King: Hero is Back” aroused enthusiasm among audience and ticket sales have exceeded(超过)100 million yuan ($16.11 million).Web celebrities and many fans even posted topics about the film on China’s Twitter-like Weibo, atwhich heated discussion are sparked.

“Monkey King: Hero is Back” is based on the household legend of the Monkey King, but tells a not-so familiar story. However, it’s still a Chinese style heroic legend and an exciting adventure against evil and darkness in troubled times, according to Lu Wei, the producer.

“Monkey King is China’s super hero. It is so popular among Chinese audience because they long for and cherish our own superhero,” said Tian Xiaopeng, the director.

Some media also put on a lot of comments from foreigners.

“He’s never dead, he’s just fallen asleep. We all need a hero to look up to, to give us hope and courage when it is needed. We grew up listening to his tales, his great adventures and heroic deeds. What makes a true hero is not just helping people when one has the power, but having the courage to stand up against the evil even without power. And this is what the film is about. When the hero loses his power and armor, when he is nothing more than an ordinary monkey, what would he do to protect the one he loves? This is also about a group of Chinese dream chasers trying to keep the beacon of hope lit even though being in the most unfavorable situations” from Tumblr.

“Though the film was injected with a little bit of Hollywood, its and creative story has attracted several Chinese cinema aficionados.” from Yibada.

For anyone still doubting the belief that our emotions impact our physical health, a new study from New Zealand should be able to settle the matter. It reports that the physical wounds of healthy seniors healed more quickly if they wrote about their most upsetting experiences.

This confirms the results of a 2010 study, and extends those findings to cover older adults-a group that is likely to suffer wounds (as from surgery), and one with less access to other ways of lowering tension (such as exercise).

Reported in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, a research team led by the University of Auckland's Elizabeth Broadbent made a study featuring 50 healthy adults ranging in age from 64 to 97. They were assigned to write for 20 minutes per day for three consecutive(连续的) days.

Half were asked to write about the most upsetting experience in their life, describing their deepest thoughts, feelings, and emotions about the events, ideally not previously shared with others. The others were asked to write about their daily activities without mentioning emotions, opinions or beliefs.

Two weeks after the third day of writing, all participants received a standard 4mm skin biopsy(皮下活体组织检查)on their inner arm. The very tiny wounds caused by the biopsy were photographed regularly over the following days to determine the rate at which they healed.

On the 11th day after the biopsy, the wounds completely healed on 76.2 percent of those who had done the expressive writing. That was true of only 42.1 percent of those who had written about everyday activities.

"The biological and psychological mechanisms behind this effect remain unclear," the researchers wrote, noting that those who had done the expressive writing did not report lower stress levels or fewer depressive symptoms than the others in the control group. Even if they weren’t consciously aware of feeling more relaxed or positive, the expressive writing appeared to have caused some sort of bodily reaction-probably involving their immune systems-that hastened their recovery.

32. What was the difference between the two groups of participants in the study?

A. When they wrote.

B. Where they wrote.

C. What they wrote about.

D. How often they wrote.

33. According to the text, the experiment lasted.

A. about three days

B. about ten days

C. about two weeks

D. about a month

34. The underlined word "hastened" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to .

A. speeded

B. showed

C. limited

D. ruined

35. What would be the best title of the text?

A. Sharing with others can reduce stress.

B. Skin biopsies are likely to cause wounds.

C. Expressive writing heals physical wounds.

D. Upsetting experiences impact our emotions.

Text 10

Good evening to you, and a good evening it is! In fact, it’s absolutely beautiful outside. Of course, it’s all due to the winds of March! Yes, if you were outside around 2:00 p.m., you were probably blown right off your feet. We had wind this afternoon that was blowing at 50 mph! You could see large umbrellas from food carts rolling down the sidewalks — a few of them blew right into traffic and caused a few accidents. Fortunately, though, the wind died down to a more reasonable 15 mph by 4:30 p.m.

Now, the forecast for tonight is for the temperature to stay around 60 degrees Fahrenheit with a light breeze — just enough for a light sweater. It should be a clear night, great for all you astronomers and star gazers. Enjoy it while you can because the clouds will begin to roll in again tomorrow, and they will be staying for a while.
