第二部分:阅读理解(第一节20小题,第二节5小题;每小题2分,满分50分>

A

One day, Mr. Arnold was teaching a lesson, and things were going as normally as ever. He was explaining the story of mankind to his pupils. He told them that, in the beginning, men were nomads; they never stayed in the same place for very long. Instead, they would travel about, here and there, in search of food, wherever it was to be found. And when the food ran out, they would move off somewhere else.

He taught them about the invention of farming and keeping animals. This was an important discovery, because by learning to cultivate(耕作)the land, and care for animals, mankind would

always have food steadily available. It also meant that people could remain living in one place, and this made it easier to set about tasks that would take a long while to complete, like building towns, cities, and all that were in them. All the children were listening attracted by this story, until Lucy jumped up:

“And if that was so important and improved everything so much, wh y are we nomads all over again, Mr. Arnold?”

Mr. Arnold didn’t know what to say. Lucy was a very intelligent girl. He knew that she lived with her parents in a house, so she must know that her family were not nomads; so what did she mean?

“We have all become nomads again,” continued Lucy, “The other day, outside the city, they were cutting the forest down. A while ago a fi sherman told me how they fish. It’s the same with everyone: when there’s no more forest left the foresters go elsewhere, and when the fis h run out the fishermen move on. That’s what the nomads did, isn’t it?

The teacher nodded, thoughtfully. Really, Lucy was right Mankind had turned into nomads. Instead of looking after the land in a way that we could be sure it would keep supplying our needs, we kept developing it until the land was bare. And then off we would go to the next place! The class spent the rest of the afternoon talking about what they could do to show how to be more civilized.

The next day everyone attended class wearing a green T-shirt, with a message that said “I am not a nomad!”

And,from then on, they set about showing that indeed they were not. Every time they knew they needed something, they made sure that they would get it using care and control. If they needed wood or paper, they would make sure that they got the recycled kind. They ordered their fish from fish farms, making sure that the fish they received were not too young and too small. They only used animals that were well cared for, and brought up on farms.

And so, from their little town, those children managed to give up being nomads again, just as prehistoric men had done, so many thousands of years ago.

A. applying the 30/70 pattern

B. talking too much about yourself

C. showing interest in their topics

D. knowing more details about them

49. To be a reliable friend, you'd better_______________.

It’s nice to have friends. Sometimes you need one person to talk to. You can play games, hang out or even just talk on the phone. Consider these suggestions to meet people and form strong, lasting friendships. Well, take your time, and don’t rush. ?Join an organization or a club with people who have common interests. You don’t necessarily have a lot of common interests with people in order to make friends with them. But if you have something in common with them, it can make it a lot easier to talk to them and plan activities. Whatever your age and whatever your interests, there is an organization or a club for you. Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter are also a great way to meet new people and learn more about them. ?Join a sports team. As long as you enjoy the sport and support your teammates, joining a local team with a laid-back attitude could be a great way to make new friends. A sports team isn’t the only way. If you play instruments or sing ,try joining a band. ?Make small talk. Keep the conversation light and cheery. Even if you’re complaining about something, make sure it’s something you’re both dissatisfied with, and emphasize the positive —how such a situation can be avoided in the future. Many conversationalists say that it is good to follow a 30/70 (30% talking, 70% listening) pattern during small talk when possible. ?Ask them out for lunch or coffee. That will give you a better opportunity to talk and get to know each other a little bit better. A good way t o extend yourself is to say: “Hey, well, I've got to go, but if you ever want to talk over lunch or coffee or anything like that, let me give you my number or e-mail address.” This gives the person the opportunity to get in touch with you; they may or may not give you their information in return, but that’s fine. Maybe they don’t have time for new friends--don’t take it personally! Just offer your information to whoever seems to be potentially a good friend, and eventually somebody will get in touch.

?Be loyal(忠诚的)to a friend.

You've probably heard of fair-weather friends. They’re the ones who are happy to be around you when things arc going well ,but are nowhere to be found when you really need them. Part of being a friend is being prepared to spare time and energy in order to help out your friends. If a friend needs help with an unpleasant thing, or if he or she just needs a shoulder to cry on ,be there. If your friends make a joke ,laugh with them. Never complain about a friend.

?Be a good listener.

Many people think that in order to be seen as

‘friend material’ they have to appear very interesting. Far more important than this ,however, is the ability to show that you’re interested in others. Listen carefully to what people say, remember important details about them (their names, their likes and dislikes), ask questions about their interests, and just take the lime to learn more about them. You don’t want to be the guy or girl that always has a better story than anyone else or that changes the subject suddenly instead of continuing the flow of conversation.

?Be trustworthy.

One of the best things about having a friend is that you have someone to whom you can talk about anything, even secrets that you hide from the rest of the world. The key to being a good friend is the ability to keep secrets, so it’s no sec ret that you shouldn’t tell other people things that were told to

you in confidence.

A. have some common interests with your friends

B. find something to complain about with your friends

C. keep the secrets that your friends have told you

D. exchange your personal information with your friends

C

How good are you at saying “no”? For many, it’s surprisingly difficult. This is especially true of editors, who by nature tend to be eager and engaged participants in everything they do. Consider these scenes:

It’s late in the day. That front-page package you’ve been working on is nearly complete; the last editing and it’s finished. Then enters the chief editor, who makes a suggestion requiring a more-than-modest rearrangement of the design and the addition of an information box. You want to scream: “No! It’s done!” What do you do?

The first rule of saying no to the boss is “don’t say no”. He probably has something in mind when he makes the suggestion, and it’s up to you to find out what. The second rule is “don't raise the risks by challenging his authority”. That issue is already decided. The third rule is “be ready to put forward choices and consequences”. The boss’s suggestion might be appropriate, but there are always consequences. He might not know about the pages backing up that need attention, or about the designer who had to go home sick. Tell him he can have what he wants, but explain the consequen ces. Understand what he’s trying to accomplish and propose(提议)a Plan B that will make it happen without destroying what you’ve done so far.

Here’s another case. Your least-favorite reporter suggests a silly story idea. This one should be easy, but it’s not. If you say no, even politely, you risk holding back further ideas, not just from that reporter, but from others who heard that you turned down the idea. This case is common in newsrooms that lack a systematic way to filter(过滤)story suggestions.

Two steps are necessary. First, you need a system for how stories are proposed and reviewed. Reporters can bear rejection of their ideas if they believe they are given a fair hearing. Your natural reaction and strong rejection, even of a worthless idea, might not qualify as systematic or fair.

Second, the people you work with need to make a “What if”,agreement covering ‘‘What if my idea is turned down?” How are people expected to react? Is there an appeal process? Can they perfect the idea and resubmit it? By imagining “What if...?” situations b efore they happen, you can reach understanding that will help ease you out of opposition.

50. This passage is mainly about_______.

A. the cases where ideas are rejected

B. the ways to give different opinions

C. the skills of saying no

D. the methods for solving disagreements

51. Instead of directly refusing your boss’s suggestion, you should_______.

A. pretend that you are sick

B. seek what he is thinking about

C. state that your design is quite perfect

D. ask him to give the reason for his suggestion

52. By saying “This one should be easy …” (Paragraph 4),the writer means it’s easy to_______

A. understand the silly story idea

B. let others politely say no

C. fool your least-favorite reporter

D. turn down that reporter’s idea

53. Why is it important to set up a system for stories to be proposed and reviewed?

A. To allow reporters enough time to change their attitude.

B. To develop reporters5 strong sense of fairness.

C. To encourage reporters to give valuable ideas.

D. To guarantee reporters chances to give further explanations.

54. What is conveyed in the last paragraph?

A. Sometimes we may view a problem from another angle.

B. We may relax ourselves by raising questions when we're in trouble.

C. “What if …?” situations help improve our relati onship with others.

D. It’s almost impossible for others to accept our ideas at once.

Red roses were her favorites; her name was also Rose. And every year her husband sent them, tied with pretty bows. The year he died, the roses were delivered to her doo r. The card said, “Be my Valentine(情人)” , like all the years before.

Each year he sent her roses, and the note would always say, “I love you even more this year, than last year on this day. My love for you will always grow, with every passing year.” She knew this was the last time that the roses would appear. She thought, he ordered roses in advance before

this day. Her loving husband did not know that he would pass away. He always liked to do things early. Then, if he got too busy, everything would work out fine. She cut away some stems, placed them in a very special vase, and set the vase beside the picture of his smiling face. She would sit for hours in her husband’s favorite chair, staring at his photo and the roses sitting there.

A year went by, and it was hard to live without her mate. Loneliness and solitude had become her fate. Then, the very hour, as on Valentine’s Day before, the doorbell rang, and there were roses, sitting by her door. She brought the roses in, and just looked at them in shock. Then, she went to get the telephone to call the florist(花匠)shop. The owner answered, and she asked him, if he would explain why someone would do this to her, causing her such pain.

“I know your husband passed away, more than a year ago,” the owner said, “I knew you'd call, and you would want to know. The flowers you received today were paid for in advance. Your husband always planned ahead. He left nothing to chance.”

“There is a standing order that I have on file down here. And he has paid, well in advance; you'll get them every year. There is also another thing that I think you should know. He wrote a special little card ... he did this years ago.” “Then, should ever, I find out that he's no longer here. That’s the card ... that should be sent to you the following year.” She thanked him and hung up the phone ,her tears now flowing hard. Her fingers shaking, she slowly reached to get the card. Inside the card, she saw that he had written her a note.

Then,as she stared in total silence, this is what he wrote: “Hello my love, I know it’s been a year since I was gone. I hope it hasn’t been too hard for you to overcome. I know it must be lonely, and the pain is very real. If it was the other way, I know how I would feel. The love we shared made everything so beautiful in life. I loved you more than words can say. You were the perfect wife.”

“You were my friend and lover; you satisfied my every need. I know it’s only been a year, but please try not to grieve. I want you to be happy, even when you shed your tears. That is why the roses will b e sent to you for years.”

“When you get these roses, think of all the happiness that we had together, and how both of us were blessed. I have always loved you and I know I always will. But, my love, you must go on; you have some living still.”

“Please ... try to find happiness, while living out your days. I know it is not easy, but I hope you find some ways. The roses will come every year, and they will only stop when your door’s not answered, when the florist stops to knock. He will come five times that day, in case you have gone out. But after his last visit, he will know without a doubt. To take the roses to the place, where I’ve instructed him, and place them where we are, together once again.”

55. How did Rose feel when she received roses a year after h er husband’s death?

A. Surprised and disappointed.

B. Happy but confused.

C. Proud but frightened.

D. Sad and puzzled.

56. What can we know about Rose's husband when he was alive?

A. He knew his wife loved roses more than himself.

B. He preferred to make arrangements ahead of time.

C. He gave his wife a pleasant surprise every Valentine’s Day.

第二节:英国著名歌手阿黛尔前往美国参加了2012年格莱美颁奖典礼,回到英国后接受了当地媒体的采访,回答了记者提出的几个问题。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F) 中选

出与她的回答(第61-65题)相匹配的问题。选项中有一项是多余选项。

A. When did you realize you wanted to be a singer?

B. What do you think of the TV shows you did while in America?

C. What does your new single “Chasing pavements” actually mean?

D. What unique ways do you employ to write these “sad love songs”?

E. Has winning the award added to the pressure you are experiencing?

F. You studied at the Brit School. Why do you think it has produced so many stars in recent years?

61. _______

Yeah, I did “Letterman” and “The Today Show”. I have no idea what they were equal to because obvious ly we don’t have them here. I like the two shows which are like “Imagine GMTV” but on a much bigger scale. It was live and there were about 50 million people watching, so I literally express myself! “Letterman” was pre-recorded so I wasn't quite nervous, but I forgot that during my performance. I got halfway through the song and couldn’t remember whether it was live or not.

62. _______

Obviously when I was little, but mainly from when I was 16 onwards. I first remember singing when I was really little, probably when I was about six. I did a Spice Girls tribute in my room for my family. And then I went to study at the Brit School, the performing arts school in Croydon. To be honest, I really enjoyed my time there, where I did actual lessons, but they didn’t force anything onto you. They just aimed to help you develop. They nurtured you, you know.

63. _______

I was thinking about this the other day, because, before this year, the Brit School didn’t actually produce anyone. All this money was being pumped into it, and nobody was coming out of it and doing well, so I think they were getting a bit worried. I think the Brit School’s produced loads of great people that nobody knows yet, but off the back of Amy Winehouse, who earned six nominations, including Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year for her hit “Rehab” and Album of the Year for “Back to Black”,it’s been getting more support. Suddenly all these great girls came forward in this great outburst of talent——I think ifs just luck and timing, to be honest..

64 _______

In the past years I’ve tried to sit down and think “Right, this is what I’m going to write about”, but I can't because you can’t force it. All my songs are a bit sad and full of drama because when I’m happy I haven’t got time to write songs, you know. When I’ve had my heart broken, I end up feeling sorry for myself and writing songs.” Therefore, there wasn’t really a specific process to it. I just sort of happen to sit and wait patiently until I'm ready to write the record. I can’t really plan it very well. If I try to plan, it never works out well.

65_______

It doesn’t really make sense, does it? “Chasing Pavements” is about chasing a boy—even if you know something’s going to go wrong, you really want it to go right, so you just don’t give up.

I can’t write other people’s drama, and I can’t glamorize a microwave or anything like that, so I end up writing songs about things I’ve experienced. Then, I got a whole album’s worth of songs out of them!

But the truth is, it is very hard work. If you’re successful, there are deadlines to be met, appointments to keep and the press to deal with. If you’re not successful, then life is extremely tough. I remember when I started out, I had to search the advertisement board at my drama school every day to look for acting jobs. Drama school was expensive and I needed extra cash to help pay the fees. I welcomed every small job. I played extras in many crowd scenes and became a confident participant in a lot of TV commercials for hair shampoo, soap and washing powder. I had been working for about two years before I got my lucky break. One day, as I was passing the drama school, I decided to go in to check the notice board. There was nothing on it and I was just leaving when the secretary came along the corridor with a piece of paper. She asked me how I was and I told her life was hard and work was difficult to find. The next moment, she put the paper in my hand and walked away. My hands were shaking as I unfolded the paper, full of expectation. To my surprise, it was an audition (试演) for a clown (小丑) for the Canadian circus. I couldn’t stop myself from laughing. I had expected an audition with a famous director for a new film! When I was at drama school, there had been a course in acrobatics (杂技) and clown tricks. I had gained top marks in this course for originality and daring. Later I went to the audition feeling very strange. This was not what I’d had in mind when I enrolled in drama school. To my surprise, the job as a clown turned out to be exactly what I wanted. I loved every moment of getting dressed up and putting on the make-up. I had the opportunity to travel
