How hard is it to get beautiful hair?

Beautiful hair can not be taken for granted. Environmental factors, chemical treatments and the mechanical damage done by combs, brushes and blow dryers all have a bad effect on the hair in the long

run. The hair parts into thin pieces, loses its brightness, becomes hard and easily broken and develops split

ends.

Our Heated Scissors(剪刀), a new approach to pretty hair, is a modern technological device available in most cities now.

No hairdresser (美发师) needs to be told how crucial the quality of a pair of scissors is. But all the same, few have imagined a cutting tool as sharp as razors (剃须刀) . What’s more, the heating element is located in the interior of the edges, with the best possible heat transference to the cutting edges. Heated cutting edges with individually adjustable temperatures seal the cuts instantly. The cut end of the hair is closed up smoothly and neatly.

Right from the very first cut, the hair takes on a new look with a brilliant shine.

51. What kind of product is advertised in the passage?

___________________________________________ __. 52. How will the hair look after being cut with the new device?

It will have a new look with__________________ _________. 53. Where is the heating element fixed in the scissors?

Child labor — the employment of children in industry, often against their will----has been a problem for many years. Over a hundred years ago, Charles Dickens shocked many readers when he described the conditions under which young children worked in British factories. The conditions Dickens described continue almost unchanged today in many parts of the world. The only difference is that today employment of children is confined to small industries and family business.

Girls suffer more from child labor practices than boys. Many of them are forced to start work when they are only ten years old. Although the work they are given to do is often light, it is often harmful to the health. Recently, children as young as six years were found to be working in Asian factories, and the children were working from eight to fourteen hours a day in overcrowded and unhealthy working conditions. Sometimes whole family group is employed, with the payment going to a parent or older relative, the children not only receive nothing or very little for their long hours of work, but also they are prevented from attending school. Therefore, when they become older they are unable to do any other kind of work.

The solution to the problem of child labor is clearly better laws to protect young children, greater supervision of industry and heavier fines for those who break the laws. Only in this way can young boys and girls be allowed to enjoy the most valuable time of their lives -- childhood.

41. Which of the following statement is true according to the first paragraph?

A. Children are often willing to work in large factories.

T ask 3

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 unfinished statements or questions, numbered 46 through 50. For each statement there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You

should make the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a

single line through the center.

When a customer finds that an item he bought is faulty or does not live up to the manufacture’s claim

for it, the first step is to present the warranty (保单) or any other helpful records at the stores of purchase. In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction.

A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the "higher up" the consumer takes his complaint, the faster he can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer's favor, if he has a just claim. Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, especially when the consumer can demonstrate what is wrong with the item. If this cannot be done, he will succeed best by presenting specific information as to, what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the manufacturer. If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely as possible, but if a polite complaint does not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go a step further. He can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or public organization responsible for protecting the consumer’s rights.

46. When a customer finds that his purchase has a fault in it, the first thing he should do is to_____.

A. threaten to take the matter to court

B. show some written proofs of the purchase to the store

C. complain personally to the manager

D. write a firm letter of complaint to the store of purchase

47. If the consumer wants a quick settlement of his problem, it is better to complain to_______

A. the store manager

B. a shop assistant

C. the manufacturer

D. a public organization

48. Suppose a customer finds fault in his tape recorder, what would he say to the store manager?

A. This tape recorder doesn’t work.

B. The tape recorder is not so good as before.

C. The sound coming out of the right speaker is unclear.

D. This is the warranty; you must change a new one for me.

49. The most effective complaint can be made by_________.

A. saying firmly that the item is of poor quality

B. showing the faulty item to the manufacturer

C. asking politely to change the item

D. explaining exactly what is wrong with the item

50. The passage tells us ________.

Part III Reading Comprehension (1) (30 points, 2 points each)

Directions: This part is to test your reading ability. There are 3 tasks for you to fulfill. You should read the materials carefully and do the tasks as you are instructed.

T ask 1

Directions:After reading the following passage, you will find 5 unfinished statements, numbered 36 through 40. For each statement there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should

make the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line

through the center.

Most of us grow up taking certain things for granted. We tend to assume that experts and religious leaders tell us ―the truth‖. We tend to believe that things advertised on television or in newspapers can’t be bad for us.

However, encouragement of critical thinking in students is one of the goals of most colleges and universities. Few professors require students to share the professors’ own beliefs. In general, professors are more concerned that students learn to question and critically examine the arguments of others, including some of their own beliefs or values. This does not mean that professors insist that you change your beliefs, either. It does mean, however, professors will usually ask you to support the views you express in class or in your writing.

If your premises(前提) are shaky, or if your arguments are not logical, professors personally point out the false reasoning in your arguments. Most professors want you to learn to recognize the premises of your arguments, to examine whether you really accept these premises, and to understand whether or not you draw logical conclusions. Put it this way: Professors don’t tell you what to think; they try to teach you how to think.

On the other hand, if you intend to disagree with your professors in class, you should be prepared to offer a strong argument in support of your ideas. Argument just for the sake of arguing usually does not promote a critical examination of ideas. Many professors interpret it as rudeness.

36. In the first paragraph, the writer tries to tell us that people______.

A. easily accept certain things without a second thought

B. grow up through learning certain things in life

C. are forming their views during their growth

D. have strong beliefs in authorities while getting old

37. Nowadays, most colleges and universities encourage students to _______.

A. criticize others

B. share professors’ beliefs

C. give their own ideas

D. change their own beliefs

38. The word ―shaky‖(line 1, para.3) most probably means ―______‖ .

A. creative

B. firm

C. false

D. weak

39. To help students develop their critical thinking, professors mainly teach them_______.

A. choice of their premises

B. the way to think independently

C. skills of drawing conclusions

D. different kinds of argument

40. According to the writer, the right way to argue is to_______.

A. argue mainly for the sake of arguing

B. prove it with a good conclusion

C. support your idea with sound reasoning

D. examine others’ ideas critically

T ask 2

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 unfinished statements, numbered 41 through 45. For each statement there are four choices marked A,B,C and D. You should make

the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line

through the center.

It would be difficult to have a society like ours without public goods such as defense, transportation, and other services.

A public good is one that a person can use without reducing the use of it for another person. One of the best examples of a public good is national defense. One person can benefit from our national defense without reducing another person’s benefits. In fact, it is difficult to keep any person in our society from enjoying the benefits of national defense.

The market system does not work well in producing public goods. This is because a person who refuses to pay for a public good cannot be kept from using it. Suppose that the neighbors in a high crime area decide to hire a police force. Each neighbor, except Mrs.Smith, agrees to pay $100 a year for it. Mrs. Smith refuses to pay because she knows that if all the others pay the $100, the police will guard the area anyway. So Mrs. Smith can enjoy the services of the police force without paying $100.

The market system has no way to deal with this type of problem. For this reason, we cannot ask each person to make a direct payment in the form of product price. Therefore, we collect money for public goods by using taxes.

41. According to the passage, public goods are_______.

A. services enjoyed by all people

B. what we can buy and sell in public

C. products that we make for national defense

D. taxes paid by the people involved

42. The writer gives the example of national defense in paragraph 2 in order to show that______.

A. there will be no safety if there is no national defense

B. all the people should be responsible for national defense

C. a public good is a shared benefit for the whole society

D. some public goods are more important than others

43. The person who does not pay for a public good________.

A. keeps himself from using its benefit

B. cannot enjoy its benefit at any time

C. fails to keep its benefit from being used

D. enjoys its benefit all the same

44. In the third paragraph the author explains_______.

A. what role the market system plays in producing public goods

B. how weak the market system is in producing public goods

C. why some people refuse to pay for public goods

D. what we can do to make use of the market system

45. From the passage we can learn that the purpose of collecting taxes is to_______.

A. ensure the continuous supply of public goods

B. reduce the difference between the rich and the poor

C. get extra money to support public goods

D. remind people of their duty

T ask 3

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 unfinished statements, numbered 46 through 50. For each statement there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should make

the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through

the center.

Our environment is getting worse and worse with the increase of the world population, which affects the environment in two ways. Firstly, the limited energy resources will be used up much faster. Secondly, the increasing population creates more pollution, another severe problem that needs to be solved. Both problems are long-term ones because actions taken now show their results slowly over many years. They are also urgent because delays in action can lead to great suffering and social problems. The question seems to be difficult to handle for most people. However, a person can be a protector of environment in everyday life if he takes actions to save the environment right now. With the development of technology, cars make transportation easier and quicker than before, but we can’t ignore the disadvantages brought to us by more and more cars in use. For example, we are consuming gasoline (汽油), which is a non-renewable(无法更新的)resource, and will soon be gone. Moreover, the exhausted gas from cars pollutes our air, and our health is therefore threatened by air pollution which has a big potential effect on our daily life. So we can consider walking, taking buses, carpooling (合用汽车), instead of driving cars alone. This seems to be a very slow process that can’t be so effective if it’s taken by a single person. But when more and more people become aware of the importance and positively take it as their personal responsibilities, the condition of the air will be improved to a great extent.

46. According to the writer, the main problem to our environment today is ________.

A. the increase of population

B. the limited energy resources

C. the more serious air pollution

D. the development of technology

47. From the passage, we can know that_________.

A. effective measures can be taken mainly by the government

B. taking measures now can soon improve the environment

C. immediate measures can cause great suffering and social problems

D. every single person’s action has some effect on environment protection.

48. The author’s main purpose in writing this passage is most probably to_______.

A. complain about people’s slow actions to protect the environment

B. advise people to take actions to protect the environment

C. show himself to be an active environment protector

D. point out the bad effects of technologies on protecting environment

49. The author believes that carpooling________.

A. can give help to those without cars

B. can save people money and time

C. can save energy resources and reduce air pollution

D. can promote friendship among drivers

50. The passage is mainly about______.

A. energy resources saving

B. environment protection

C. population control

D. air pollution

Part III: Reading Comprehension (1) (30%)

Task 1

What is your favorite color? Do you like yellow, orange and red? If you do, you must be an optimist (乐观主义者), a leader. Do you prefer gray and blue? Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. Y ou tend to be a pessimist (悲观主义者). At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference, as well as the effect that colors have on human beings. They tell us, among other facts, that we do not choose our favorite color as we grow up – we are born with our preference. If you happen to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or as soon as you could see clearly.

Colors do influence our moods – there is no doubt about it. A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing. A black bridge over the Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides (自杀) than any other bridge in the area –until it was repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply; perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.

Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active. It is established that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or gray.

Ideas about education are changing in the United States. Education today is not just a high school diploma (学历) or a degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kind of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma. Continuing education gives these adults the opportunities to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones. Scientists, mechanics(技师) and barbers(理发师)can take classes to improve their work skills. If they know more or learn more, they can get a better job or earn more money.

Continuing education classes give more adults the chance to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from; typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. There are only some of the classes available. Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves.

2018成人学士学位英语考试试题 I. Reading comprehension Passage 1 Since its founding in 1948, McDonald's has grown from a family burger (汉堡包) stand to a global fast-food chain, with more than 30,000 locations in 118 countries. With 58 million daily customers worldwide, McDonald’s is now so ubiquitous around the globe that The Economist publishes a global ranking of currencies' purchasing power based on the prices charged at the local McDonald’s, called the Big Mac Index (巨无霸指数).That’s not to say that every nation carries the same menu items: choices vary widely depending on location. Some Asian locations serve fried shrimp in a Big Mac roll, while McDonald’s in India doesn’t serve beef at all, relying instead on burgers made from vegetables, rice and beans. Not everyone in the world has been happy to greet Ronald McDonald when he moves to town. Many see McDonald's as a symbol of American economic and cultural chauvinism (沙文主义), and European nations in particular have viewed American-style fast food as an insult to their national food. A French farmer, Jose Bove, became something of a national hero in 1999 after he and a group of people destroyed a McDonald's under construction to protest globalization and "bad food." The next year, a bomb exploded in a French McDonald’s, killing a 27-year-old employee. (76) (76)No one claimed responsibility. But regardless of whether you like their food or their policies, McDonald’s is still widely seen as one of the true pioneers of peaceful globalization. 1. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE. A. McDonald's was founded in 1948. B. McDonald’s has opened its restaurants in every city of the world. C. McDonald’s has over 30,000 locations in the world now. D. McDonald’s was very small in scale in the beginning. 2. The word ubiquitous in Paragraph 2 is most likely to mean ____. A. very crowded B. very dean C. existing everywhere D. occurring frequently 3. From Paragraph 2, we can conclude that ____. A. McDonald’s designs its menu to suit the local people B. millions of young adults got their first job with McDonald’s C. the McDonald’s menu sticks to old-fashioned favorites such as the Big Mac D. the low prices McDonald’s bring tens of millions of people through its doors every day 4. What did Jose Bove and his people do in 1999 to protest against McDonald's? A. They organized a strike. B. They protested outside a McDonald’s. C. They refused to go to a newly-built McDonald’s. D. They destroyed a McDonald’s under construction. 5. In ____, an employee died in a fatal bomb attack on a McDonald’s restaurant in France.
