This is a story that happened 15 years ago but it has always stayed with me since then.On the way back from work every evening, more often than not there would be a homeless man standing at the exit of the freeway. He always waved at every car,he was always happy and smiling and sometimes almost dancing.Every day after work when I got there,I would quickly roll down

my window and give him the coins.Occasionally the red light would be on for a minute and we would ask each other about our day.His answer would always be the same,“I’m blessed!”.

It amazed me that even in his situation of being homeless he was so positive, and his answer would remind me of how blessed I was.A single mother of four amazing kids, with a place to call home and with a job to provide for my kids. Then one day I was called into my boss’s office and was told that I was being laid off due to the economy.Needless to say that on my was home that day I was very sad and upset.I didn’t remember to look for my spare change and keep it ready like I usually did.I wasn’t feeling the joy as I got off the ramp where the homeless man would be.Yet there he was as alway,as l turned the ramp.He set his eyes on me,while still smiling and waving at others.

From a very early age, some children exhibit better

self-control than others. Now,a new study that began with about 1,000

children in New Zealand has tracked how a child’s low self-control can

predict poor health, money troubles and even a criminal record in their

adult years.

Researchers have been studying this group of children for

decades now. They observed the level of self-control the youngsters displayed.Parents, teachers, even the kids themselves, scored the youngsters on measures like“acting before thinking”and “Persistence in reaching goals.”

The study led by Moffitt of Duke University and colleagues followed 1,000 children from birth to age 32 in Dunedin,New Zealand.

“The children who had the lowest self-control when they were age three to ten, later on had the most health problems in their 30s,” Moffitt said,“and they had the worst financial situation. They were more likely to have a criminal record and to be raising a child as a single parent on a very low income.”Moffitt explained that self-control problems were widely observed, and weren’t just a feature of a small group of misbehaving kids.

Moffitt said it’s still unclear why some children have better self-control than others, though s he said other researchers have found that it’s mostly a learned behavior, with relatively little genetic influence. But good self-control can be set to run in familles because children with good self-control are more likely to grow up to be healthy and prosperous parents. But the good news,Moffitt said,is that self-control can be taught by parents, and through school curricula that have been shown to be effective.

London has become a cycle friendly zone after the launch of a new bike hire scheme. It has been designed to encourage more people to cycle in and around

scheme to be sent a key.The key will unlock one of the bikes, which are kept at docking stations in and around central London. You have to pay an access fee for the key and then you pay as you go,for he length of time you use the bike.

Transport for London, which runs the scheme, are hoping to have 6,000 bikes and 400 docking stations in place by the end of the year. The new hire system is hoping to ease congestion in London and is expected to generate up to 40,000 extra cycle trips a day into the city centre.London Mayor Boris Johnston launched the scheme and said London had been “filled with thousands of gleaming machines that will transform the look and feel of our streets and become as commonplace on our roads as black cabs and red buses”.

However, there have been a few problems since the scheme was launched last Friday. On the first day some people found they couldn’t dock their bike properly and their usage of the bike had not registered.Transport for London did admit they had been expecting a few “teething problems”and have said they wouldn’t charge for the first day as a“gesture of goodwill”.Some other people have criticized the lack of docking stations and locks for the bikes as well as the price it costs to hire the bicycles.

Recently, university students around the world were asked to volunteer in a global experiment

called Unplugged. It was designed to see how young people would react if they were asked to observe a total media ban by unplugging all forms of media devices for 24 hours.

Unplugged is being run by Dr Roman Gerodimos,a lecturer in Communication and Journalism at Bournemouth University.During the experiment,Dr Gerodimos said there were already signs of how much the exercise affected volunteers. He said:“They’re repor ting withdrawal symptoms, overeating, feeling nervous, isolated and disconnected.”

During their 24-hour test, three of the experiment’s participants were followed around by a BBC reporter plus cameraman. They were asked to write down 100 lines about their day offline, but of course, they all waited until the next day when they had access to their laptops.

Elliot Day wrote:“Today,my whole morning routine was thrown up into the air.Despite being aware of the social importance of the media,I was surprised by how empty my life felt without the radio or newspapers.”

From Caroline Scott,we read:“I didn’t expect it,but being deprived of the media for 24 hours resulted in my day-to-day activities becoming so much harder to carry out than usual…I didn’t break out in a cold sweat like our lecturer expected us all to,but It’s not something l would like to do again!”

And Charlotte Gay wrote:“I have to say the most difficult item for me to be without has been my mobile;not only is it a social device,it’s my main access point of communication.”

[1]It’s a fine line parents walk as they try to guide their kids

into adulthood. You want to protect but not treat too kindly, advise but not control and let them live their own lives—with some input,of course.

[2]When your child asks for help or advice, give only what was asked for.If your Child asks you to tie a particular hard-to-tie knot(绳结)for a project she is working on,just tie the knot.Don’t start helping with the rest of the project or making suggestions on h ow to do it.She wants to do it herself,in her own way.Befor which your child has not askd for, count to ten.Perhaps in those seconds you’ll decide that the advice would do no good,or isn’t really that important, and you’ll drop it.If the advi ce still seems important, you will give it,but the pause may lead you to give it in a more thoughtful way.

[3]Remember that your child is not you and is not a reflection of you.We mak a serious mistake if we try to shape our children into copies of ourselves,or if we think of them as extensions or reflections of ourselves. We need to help them to be them, not try to turn them into us or into something that we think will make us look good.

[4]Our primary responsibility to our children is not that of telling them moment-to-moment or day-to-day how to behave but providing them with a healthy environment in which to develop. For example, one of the best ways you can help your kids is to work with your community to create safe-enough outdoor places to play in your neighborhood.

A Possible Version

Ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome to our school.

Here I’d like to introduce our English teaching and study in brief. As you know,we’ve already been studying English early in the elementary school.Nowadays we have four hours of English every week.Besides,we all have to spend much more time on it,otherwise we can’t complete the teaching task.As to the Senior High English Curriculum Standards, students have to master a vocabulary of more than 3500 words and accomplish reading materials of over 350 thousand words by the end of Senior Three.

I’m glad to say we Chinese students have made great progress in English reading and listening, but we have a Iong way to go,especially in spoken English and writing.Sometimes we find it rather difficult to speak to somebody and write something in English.

We’re lucky enough to haye you here. Please do a favor to give us as much advice as possible to improve our English.

That’s all.Thank you for your attention.
