NASA has recently found a twin Earth in the Milky Way. Scientists said the planet was the closest to Earth that has been seen.

Kepler 452b, which has been named Earth 2, is six billion years old. It has a 385-day year and orbits its star at the same distance as us. It is so like Earth that NASA believes it is possible that life once inhabited the planet. Kepler 452b is 60 percent larger in diameter (直径) than Earth. Scientists say that the planet received the same kind of sunshine as we do on Earth. Thus, plants could survive if taken to the planet.

Since the planet is 1.5 billion years older than Earth, scientists say it can show a possible future for earth. “If Kepler 452b is indeed a rocky planets, its location could mean that it is just entering an uncontrollable greenhouse period of its climate history.” Said Doug Caldwell, a scientist working on the Kepler Mission.

According to Caldwell, the increasing energy from its aging sun might be heating the surface and evaporating any oceans. Kepler 452b could be experiencing now what Earth will undergo more than a billion years from now, as the Sun ages and grows brighter.

The discovery also gives new hope that alien(外星人) civilizations may exist beyond the Solar System. “We won’t be going to this planet but our children’s children’s children might be.” said Jeff Coughlin, another research scientist on the Kepler Mission.

The Kepler space telescope (太空望远镜) has been looking for signs of new worlds outside the Solar System since May 2009, and has so far found more than 4,000 planets. But those planets are either too hot or too cold to sustain life.

(注:Kepler Mission NASA 设计的发现类地行星的太空探索任务)

22. The importance of the discovery of Earth2 lies in the fact that Earth2 ________.

① can show a likely future for the earth

② gives new hope that alien civilizations may exist beyond the Solar System

③ proves that life once inhabited the planet

④ proves that plants can survive on other planets apart from the earth.

⑤ is going through now what the earth will undergo more than a billion years

from now

A. ④⑤

B. ①③

C. ②④

D. ①②

23. What can we infer from the text?

A. The earth has existed for about 4.5 billion years.

B. Kepler 452b is one of the planets in the Milky Way.

C. Doug Caldwel and Jeff Coughlin are both research scientists on the Kepler

Mission.

D. More than 4,000 planets outside the Solar System still cannot sustain life now.

With his unique black mane (鬃毛)and impressive stature(身材), 13-year-old Cecil was a popular tourist attraction at the 3.6 million-square-acre Hwange National Park(万基国家公园) in Zimbabwe (津巴布韦).

Cecil was head of a pride of lions that includes 12 cubs(幼崽), but the well-known lion was shot and killed in early July by American dentist Walter J. Palmer.

Cecil’s death has already sparked an international outcry (强烈抗议) with many calling for an end to hunting endangered animals and for Palmer to be extradited(引渡) to Zimbabwe to stand trial.

Professor David Macdonald, the head of the Oxford University research program that monitored the daily movements of Cecil and dozens of other lions, is deeply saddened by Cecil’s death. Macdonald hopes the death can inspire the public to take an interest in lion conservation.

Macdonald says many of the lions tracked by the program have been shot and killed. “The background to this story is that there is a crisis for lions throughout much of Africa.” He says.

African lion populations have fallen almost 60 percent over the past thirty decades, and as few as 32,000 of them remain in the wild, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare(国际爱护动物基金会).

“And as troubling as it is, the rarer these hunted animals become, the more hunter s are willing to pa y to kill them,” said Jeff Flockedn, the fund’s North American regional director.

In addition to excessive hunting, lions throughout Africa also continue to face threats that include conflicts with local farmers, loss of habitat and risk of traffic and railway collisions(碰撞).

Anyone who is afraid of failure and afraid to face challenges will never taste success, so said our professor in marketing. I laughed it off at that time, but got frightened when it actually happened in my life.

I landed in a small city in the Middle East to set up a firm, a world-class car rental firm. Having decided on the project, I earnestly settled in preparation. With a positive mind, I told myself nothing should stop me now, and was more than keen to make it a success.

However, the least expected thing happened. Iraq invaded Kuwait. Tension ran high in the region. Eventually the war broke out, and many people fled the country, leaving my firm in deep trouble.

As usual, “things become difficult, and every effort seems to bring disappointment, it can be tempting to lower your expectations or even water down your goals and ambitions.”I was no exception. I thought of running away. I remembered the words of Thomas Edison, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to succeed when they gave up.”

I decided to hang on, telling myself, “I am not afraid of challenges and obstacles.” I stayed on through months of uncertainty and insecurity. Finances ran low, and banks could not wait to get their dues. To add to all this, the banks even threatened to take all my vehicles. I felt I made a wrong decision to move there.

I was now ready to face failure.

I was living against all hopes, believing that something good would happen. After

2 months the war ended. My persistence paid off: people started flooding back and the car bookings picked up, five times over.

Success comes to the one who dares, even after failure, to think positively and look forward confidently. After all, it is only the experience that makes a man tough. Failure does not mean you will never make it. It means that it will take a little longer. It provides us with a learning experience.

32. The main method the author uses to support his understanding of his

professor’s viewpoint is _______.

A. offering analyses

B. providing explanations

C. making comparisons

D. giving examples

33. How did the author feel when the war between Iraq and Kuwait broke out?

A. Unconfident

B. Indifferent

C. Nervous

D. Calm

34. What does the unde rlined phrase “water down” in the 4th paragraph probably

mean?

A. get rid of

B. smooth away

C. make less forceful

D. improve on

35. The author’s purpose of writing the passage is most likely to ________.

A. inform

B. persuade

C. describe

D. entertain

Security Services advise that there have been robberies reported in the East Oxford area, carried out by a group and involving threats of and showing of a knife. The victims have all been young males of student age and appearance who have been walking alone between 7 pm and the early hours of the morning. 37

a restaurant or walk towards other people. Make lots of noise and use your personal alarm to shock the person. 38 If you need to use your mobile phone on the route, go into a shop or stand with your back to a shop window and constantly survey the area around you. 39 And try not to be too obvious doing it.

● 40 Keep your head up and while you should look ahead to avoid unnecessary conflicts, such as a group of young men ahead of you, you should also be aware of everything around you.

● Whenever possible, use well-lit and busy streets and definitely avoid alleyways(胡同,小巷), wasteland and other quiet short cuts.

A. Get ready to fight the person bravely.

B. Walk with confidence and look as though you’re on a mission(任务).

Last week, we had a class meeting, making a survey about the phenomenon of

some students copying from others’ homeworks and cheating in exams.

The survey shows that 98% of the students questioning consider it a matter of

honesty. However, 25% of the students think they have too many homework, and

their parents and teachers care too much for their scores. As result, some of them

can’t help copy from others to avoid being scolded.

In my opinion, this is wrong to copy from others. We students should be honest

but try to finish our homework all by ourselves. As for teachers, they had better to

offer students different homework and tests depending on our different levels. By

doing so, every student can have a sense of accomplishment.

Dear John,

I’m really glad heart from you and know how you are getting along. I think it

is common for you not to get used to the life there. Here I have some advice for

you.

First of all, you should respect local customs and try to involve yourself in

the lives of the locals. Just as the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans

do.” Secondly, don’t forget to communicate with American students and make friends

with them. Friendship will bring you happiness. What’s more, it is better for you

to take more outdoor activities with your friends, which may help you relax and have

I hope you can adapt to your new life soon and enjoy your stay there.

A I have had all kinds of interesting neighbors since the early days of my life. When I was a baby I would stand in my wooden crib(婴儿床) and watch the world go by through the window. Some neighbors watched me watching the world go by with by big, wondering eyes and found me very interesting. They used to call me “the beauty at the window”. The early neighbors I could remember were from the second house I lived in. Peter and Paul were twins. We went to play school together although they were a year older than me. I well remember the Alsatian they had which ran into me when I was invited to their fifth birthday party. Needless to say, I was well-known for my loud screams after the party. But they said the pet was scared of my screams and didn’t appear until the party was over. Peter and Paul were the first boys who encouraged me to climb the gate. I could never tell the difference between boy and girl behaviors—I just did what I thought was fun. Not only did I have a great time performing that first climb, I also got my skirts dirty, and was criticized by my mother. The Japanese neighbors I had living in this same house were my favorite, as they introduced me to sea-salt baked shrimps (烤虾) which were so crisp that you could eat the shrimp totally. They gave me some seaweed for my birthday. Thankfully, no other member in my family enjoyed the seaweed as I did. Perhaps what my mother used to joke to me was true, that I was picked up out of the dustbin that belonged to a Japanese home. Maybe sometimes it is difficult to find good neighbors in this society. But all it takes is a spark(火花) to get a fire going. I have decided to be that spark wherever I live and pass love on to my neighbors. 21. We can guess "the Alsatian" in the twin brothers' home is ___________. A. a small child B. an interesting toy C. a dog D. a bicycle 22. From the passage we can know that the author___________. A. enjoyed the Japanese neighbors' cooking style most B. had difficulty getting on with the twin brothers' family C. was described as interesting when playing with boys D. had many neighbors that worked in restaurants 23. What can we infer from the passage? A. The author often moved to other places. B. Peter and Paul liked to play tricks on others. C. The neighbors the author had were good at cooking. D. The author had a good relationship with her neighbors. B Below are four ads on the website.Artful Experience It’s an artful experience even if you’re artistically challenged.
