(F)“How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that people in the U.S.A greet each other. But “How are you?” is also a very unusual question. It’s a question that often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks“ How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “Fine”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.

Sometimes, people also don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone Asks “Do you agree?”, the other person might think, “No, I disagree. I think you’re Wrong...”But it isn’t very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say “I’m not sure.” It’s a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone.

People also don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one per son say “I’ve to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up gives and excuse: “Someone’s at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove.” The excuses might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.

Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, of finishing a talk, people don’t say exactly that they are thinking. It’s an important way tha t people try to be nice to each other, and it’s part of the game of language.

51 “How are you?” is another way of saying "Hello." or" Hi."

52. It is polite lo say" No. I disagree I think you are wro ng, "if you don’t agree with others.

53. When someone says "I have to go now "On the phone.it means he wants to go on talking.

The word “sport” first meant somethin that people did in their free time. Later it often meant hunting (捕猎) wild animals and birds.

About a hundred years ago the word was first used for organized games. This is the usual meaning of the word today. People spend a lot of their spare time playing football, basketball, tennis and many other sports. Such people play because they want to. A few people are paid for the sport they play. These people are called professional sportsmen. They may be sportsmen for only a few years, but during that time the best one can earn a lot of money.

For example, a professional footballer in England earns more than $3000 a year. The starts earn a lot more. International golf and tennis champions (网球锦标赛) can make more than $50000 in a year. Of course, only a few sporsmen can earn as much money as that. It is only possible in sports for individuals (个人的) like golf, tennis and motor-racing. Perhaps the most surprising thing about sportsmen and money is that: the star can earn more money from advertising than from sport. An advertising for sports equipment (设备) does not simply say “Buy our thing”. It says “Buy the same shirt and shoes as …”. Famous sportsmen can even advertise things like watches and food. They allow the companies to use their name or a photo of them and they are paid for this. Sport is no longer just something for people’s spare time.

Nowadays, more and more schools in China make rules making

students wear school uniforms to school. Parents and teachers think it will

make a better learning environment at school, but some students don’t like

their school uniforms. So, what are school uniforms like in other parts of

the world?

In Japan, boys in middle school wear uniforms called “gakuran”which have dark jackets with stand-up collars and pants. Girls, on the other hand, wear uniforms called “sailor fuku”, which look like European naval(海军) uniforms.

Most schools in England require students to wear school uniforms. Boys need to wear long grey or black pants, white shirts and school ties. Girls have the same clothes as boys, but they can wear skirts or summer school dresses during the summer term.

In the UK, uniforms were the custom throughout most of the 20th Century, but now more and more public schools stop requiring students to wear uniforms. They think uniforms make students lose their personalities(个性).

For children in many African countries, school uniforms can be a kind of pride, or a huge financial burden(经济负担). Many children have only one uniform, and that may be all the clothes they have.

In a word, love it or hate it, school uniform is a part of growing up for children around the world so you’d better enjoy your school uniform and your school life.

以what, who, where, when, why, how 提问的问题,可以从文章中直接找到答案。 例:I had the meanest (最刻薄的) mother in the whole world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have porridge, eggs or toast. When others had Cokes and candy for lunch, I

had to eat a sandwich. But at least I wasn’t alone when I wa s sad. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did. 1. How many children does the writer’s mother have? A. Four. B. Two. C. Three. Would you like to live in a city where buildings turn the lights off for you, and self-driving cars will find the nearest parking space themselves? Although it might sound a little far from you, living in a “smart” city like this could happen sooner th an you think.

2020届中考英语阅读理解50篇 (绝对精品训练题,接近实战考题,值得下载练习) 1 When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelon was expensive. One of my father’s friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul. Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie’s place. We’d sit on the edge of the dock(码头), feet dangling(摇晃), and got ready for a big meal. Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we’d bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seed-free part—and throw away the rest. Bernie was my father’s idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie’s wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon. What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don’t take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life. For many years, I forgot that lesson I’d learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could. Well, I’ve relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That’s the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw t he rest away. 1. We learned from the second paragraph that the writer and his father were feeling ______. A. relaxed B. worried C. hungry D. proud 2. How did the writer and his father eat the watermelon? A. They ate it in a polite way. B. They only ate its best part. C. They ate every part of it. D. They shared only one piece. 3. In the eyes of the writer’s father, Bernie ______. A. was just a rich businessman B. worked hard all the time C. lived a rich but healthy life D. knew how to make money

As he ran down the street, he saw a poor family. “I wish you a Happy New Year.” said Edward, as he was passing on. The man shook his head. “You are no t from this country.” said Edward.

阅读之判断对错练习题 (一) Every year, in late March or early April, a boat race takes place o n the Thames River, England. This boat race is an event between the two most famous and also the oldest universities in Britain – the Oxford(牛津大学)and the Cambridge(剑桥大学). The idea for the boat race between the universities came from two friends – Charles Merivale, a student at Cambridge, and his friend Charles Wordsworth who was at Oxford. They decided to set up a boat race between the two universities. On March 12, 1829, Cambridge sent a challenge to Oxford first. When the first boat race took place in a small town by Thames, eight students from each university became th e competitors. Crowds of twenty thousand traveled to watch. It was so exciting. And the Oxford was clear winners. Later on, not only did the students from the two universities take part, but also some social groups attended the event. By 1845, with the small town becoming too crowded, the boat race had moved six miles up to the village – Putney. From 1856 on, the race has been held every year except war years. This boat race is considered to be “the world’s oldest sporting challenge”. The race is four and a quarter miles in just 20 minutes and the competitors often face difficulties. It usually takes six months for the two teams to prepare for the big days. In the past, the Oxford was mostly the winners. But things have changed from 1993 on. The Cambridge has won more. (F)。 1. The boat race takes place between the Oxford and the Cambridge. 2. On March 12, 1829, Oxford sent a challenge to Cambridge first. 3.
