Passage Two
Birds that are literally half-asleep—with one brain hemisphere alert and the other sleeping —control which side of the brain remains awake, according to a new study of sleeping ducks.
Earlier studies have documented half-brain sleep in a wide range of birds. The brain hemispheres take turns
４sinking into the sleep stage characterized by slow brain waves. The eye controlled by the sleeping hemisphere keeps shut, while the wakeful hemisphere's eye stays open and alert. Birds also can sleep with both hemispheres resting at once.
Decades of studies of birds flocks led researchers to predict extra alertness in the more vulnerable, end-of-row sleepers. Sure enough, the end birds tended to watch carefully on the side away from their companions. Ducks in the inner spots showed no preference for gaze direction.
Also, birds dozing at the end of the line resorted to single-hemisphere sleep, rather than total relaxation, more often than inner ducks did. Rotating 16 birds through the positions in a four-duck row, the researchers found outer birds half-asleep during some 32 percent of dozing time versus about 12 percent for birds in internal spots.
"We believe this is the first evidence for an animal behaviorally controlling sleep and wakefulness simultaneously in different regions of the brain," the researchers say.
The results provide the best evidence for a long-standing supposition that single-hemisphere sleep evolved as creatures scanned for enemies. The preference for opening an eye on the lookout side could be widespread, they predict. They've seen it in a pair of birds dozing side-by-side in the zoo and in a single pet bird sleeping by a mirror. The mirror-side eye closed as if the reflection were a companion and the other eye stayed open.
Useful as half-sleeping might be, it's only been found in birds and such water mammals as dolphins, whales, and seals. Perhaps keeping one side of the brains awake allows a sleeping animal to surface occasionally to avoid drowning (淹死).
Studies of birds may offer unique insights into sleep. Jerome Siegel of the UCLA says he wonders if birds' half-brain sleep is "just the tip of the iceberg". He speculates (推测) that more examples may turn up when we take a closer look at other species.

Passage Three
To understand the marketing concept, it is only necessary to understand the difference between marketing and selling. Not too many years ago, most industries concentrated primarily on the efficient production of goods, and then relied on persuasive salesmanship to move as much of these goods as possible. Such production and selling focuses on the needs of the seller to produce goods and then convert them into money.
Marketing, on the other hand, focuses on the wants of consumers. It begins with first analyzing the preferences and demands of consumers and then producing goods that will satisfy them. This eye-on-the-consumer approach is known as the marketing concept, which simply means that instead of trying to sell whatever is easiest to produce or buy for resale, the makers and dealers first endeavor to find out what the consumer wants to buy and then go about making it available for purchase．
This concept does not imply that business is benevolent(慈善的)or that consumer satisfaction is given priority over profit in a company. There are always two sides to every business transaction--the firm and the customer—and each must be satisfied before trade occurs. Successful merchants and producers, however, recognize that the surest route to profit is through understanding and catering to customers. A striking example of the importance of catering to the consumer presented itself in mid-1985, when Coca Cola changed the flavor of its drink. A computer virus has already done a lot of damage, but its potential is even more terrifying. Beginning late Wednesday, computers in dozens of universities and on many military bases began running faster and faster, compiling huge quantities of useless data.
Scientists at the Lawrence Livermore laboratory suspected a virus and shut their system down. At the University of California at Berkeley, academic research files also began to fill with worthless data and at Stanford Research Institute, several computers based projects are now in danger of being attacked. One project that will now likely have to be scrapped is a multimillion dollar program being developed to test Defense Department

All of the researchers say they will be shutting down and isolating their computers from outside sources. They explain that the virus probably entered the computers by means of a network of telephone lines by which thousands of scientists all over the world share information. In towns or cities where pollution levels are high, air can be filtered through air pipes in the roof of an underground housing or industrial complex. A world underwater At the docks you step into a shiny metal submarine that is shaped like a shark. The door is closed behind you, and powerful engine starts to push. Down slides the submarine--like a shark diving. Deeper and deeper under the water. Soon all sunlight is gone. The headlights of the diving ship are turned on. Then, six miles below, you come to the sea bottom. From the diving submarine, you change to tiny jet boat and ride along close to the bottom of the ocean, almost as you would skim over the land in an air-plane. As you travel, you have fun looking out the window at the sights on the bottom of the ocean. You see strange fish and underwater mountains, cliffs, and valleys. But more than that--hotels and mining camps and farms and factories! A world in space Let's go back to dry land and take a future journey the other way-up instead of down. Huge rocket liners take you into space to visit the Moon Camp. You walk around on the moon in a special moon suit. You visit an observatory where a giant telescope looks far into space--farther than anyone has ever been able to see from Earth. You go deep down into one of the moon mines. Controls that won't even have to be touched will make all speeding cars miss each other or will put on the brakes. Driving by car will be as safe as being at home. Weather control But maybe the most wonderful surprise in the future will be weather control. Cities may have giant plastic domes over them to keep out snow, rain, or storms. When you plan a picnic in a park, you won't have to worry about rain. It will rain only when the "weatherman" thinks it is needed to freshen the air inside the city. All other days will be fair and warm. The future should be a wonderful time in which to live.
