No one can believe that the over 6,300kilometer Great Wall might disappear some day.Believe it or not,the Great Wall is being destroyed by people.Less than 20 per cent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty,is still perfect, but about 80 per cent is in danger. The Great Wall can be called “great”mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realize that the length was made up of one brick at a time.If we do nothing to save the Great Wall,it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site.

A ★ For years, he had difficulty saving to buy a house because something would always happen and use more money. Although he made efforts, he simply could not go long before spending the extra money that he had saved. Then one day a car accident badly damaged the car his wife was driving. The repairs might cost them five thousand dollars. Unfortunately, they were now in debt (债务) and so the car would have to wait. He realized that they needed a solution to their money problems. He worked long and hard for weeks, saving and managing his money in a way he had never done before. In a few months he had saved enough money to have his wife’s car repaired. Once the car was repaired, he discussed with his wife how quickly they had put aside the money they needed. During their discussion his wife encouraged him to open a second account (账户) so they could continue to put away the same amount of money that they were saving every week for the car repair. This money would go towards the house they had always wanted to buy. In a little over a year he saved more than twenty thousand dollars and was able to make the down payment (首付款). He did something in a short while that he had failed to achieve in his previous attempts. This man’s experiences gave him a different feeling about money. He and his wife have continued to keep their second account. This time they have decided to start saving for their retirement, putting away just a little less every week than they did for their house. One man developed a new set of good qualities because he had a goal that was important for him to achieve — he made a plan to achieve it and followed through. The experience of a single bad luck taught him a valuable lesson and challenged him to plan his saving, and spending habits again. In the process he also changed his

高考英语阅读理解专题训练精品题(5) Passage Fifteen (Contribution of Coeducation) Imagining being asked to spend twelve or so years of your life in a society which consisted only of members of own sex. How would you react? Unless there was something definitely wrong with y ou, you wouldn’t be too happy about it, to say the least. It is all the more surprising therefore that so many parents in the world choose to impose such abnormal conditions on their children –conditions which they themselves wouldn’t put up with for one minute! Any discussion of this topic is bound to question the aims of education. Stuffing children’s heads full of knowledge is far from being foremost among them. One of the chief aims of educations is to equip future citizens with all they require to take their place in adult society. Now adult society is made up of men and women, so how can a segregated school possibly offer the right sort of preparation for it? Anyone entering adult society after years of segregation can only be in for a shock. A co-educational school offers children nothing less than a true version of society in miniature. Boys and girls are given the opportunity to get to know each other, to learn to live together from their earliest years. They are put in a position where they can compare themselves with each other in terms of academic ability, athletic achievement and many of the extra-curricular activities which are part of school life. What a practical advantage it is ( to give just a small example ) to be able to put on a school play in which the male parts will be taken by boys and the female parts by girls! What nonsense co-education makes of the argument that boys are cleverer than girl or vice-versa. When segregated, boys and girls are made to feel that they are a race apart. Rivalry between the sexes is fostered. In a coeducational school, everything falls into its proper place. But perhaps the greatest contribution of co-education is the healthy attitude to life it encourages. Boys don’t grow up believing that women are mysteri ous creatures –airy goddesses, more like book-illustrations to a fairy-tale, than human beings. Girls don’t grow up imagining that men are romantic heroes. Years of living together at

You don’t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time. In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them, you can see that happiness is always around you. Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can’t be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转) door. When it closes, it also opens. An old friend from California called from the airport to tell me that he had arrived. (完整版)高中英语阅读训练习题及答案

A (words:311&225) The British National Health Service (NHS) was set up in 1948 and was designed to provide equal basic health care, free of charge, for everybody in the country. Before this time health care had to be paid for by individuals. Nowadays central government is directly responsible for the NHS although it is administered by local health authorities. About 83 percent of the cost of the health service is paid for by general taxation and the rest is met from the National Insurance contributions paid by those in work. There are charges for prescription and dental care but many people, such as children, pregnant women, pensioners, and those on Income Support, are exempt from payment. Most people are registered with a local doctor (a GP, or General Practitioner) who is increasingly likely to be part of a health centre which serves the community. As the population of Britain gets older, the hospital service now treats more patients than before, although patients spend less time in hospital. NHS hospitals—many of which were built in the nineteenth century — provide nearly half a million beds and have over 480, 000 medical staff. The NHS is the biggest employer in Europe although Britain actually spends less per person on health care than most of her European neighbours. During the 1980s there was considerable restructuring of the Health Service with an increased emphasis on managerial efficiency and the privatization of some services (for example, cleaning). At the end of the 1980s the government introduced proposals for further reform of the NHS, including allowing some hospitals to be self-governing, and encouraging GPs to compete for patients. Patients would be able to choose and change their family doctor more easily and GPs would have more financial responsibility. The political questions continue of how much money should be provided to support the NHS and where it should come from. 41. We can know from the first paragraph that ______________. A. the original aim of the NHS was to provide equal basic health care for everybody B. people didn’t have to pay for health care since the NHS was set up C. patients were charged for receiving health care before 1948 D. the NHS was an organization which gave free advice to villagers 42. What do we know about the NHS? A. It’s managed by the central government.

高一英语阅读训练 Too many people think that global warming is not a threat, but I think it is one of the biggest problems. Our world has been greatly affected by climate change and its critical that people, young and old, work together to fight it. How are children supposed to fight global warming if they grow up not knowing about its dangers? Children should be taught ways they can help in primary school, which is why it is critical that more schools offer environmental education classes. I think the nation should require schools to have a class about being “green”——Green Living could be its name. Every school should teach students about global warming, its effect, and what they can do to reduce their carbon footprints. In the classes, students could be assigned(安排)to find solutions to everyday energy problems, while learning about their influence on the earth and how we all can help. Students will probably use what they have learned in class at home, where it will affect the whole family. However, to be effective, schools must take steps to be “green” too.
