Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (15 minutes)Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer Sheet 1.For questions 1-7, markY(for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage;N(for NO) if the statement contradicts the information given in the passage;NG(for NOT GIVEN) if the information is not given in the passage. For questions 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage. Our dreams combine verbal, visual and emotional stimuli into a sometimes broken, nonsensical but often entertaining story line. We can sometimes even solve problems in our sleep. Or can we? Many experts disagree on exactly what the purpose of our dreams might be. Are they strictly random brain impulses, or are our brains actually working through issues from our daily life while we sleep -- as a sort of coping mechanism? Should we even bother to interpret our dreams? Many say yes, that we have a great deal to learn from our dreams. Why do we Dream? For centuries, we've tried to figure out just why our brains play these nightly shows for us. Early civilizations thought dream worlds were real, physical worlds that they could enter only from their dream state. Researchers continue to toss around many theories about dreaming. Those theories essentially fall into two categories:●The idea that dreams are only physiological stimulations●The idea that dreams are psychologically necessaryPhysiological theories are based on the idea that we dream in order to exercise various neural connections that some researchers believe affect certain types of learning. Psychological theories are based on the idea that dreaming allows us to sort through problems, events of the day or things that are requiring a lot of our attention. Some of these theorists think dreams might be prophetic. Many researchers and scientists also believe that perhaps it is a combination of the two theories.Dreaming and the BrainWhen we sleep, we go through five sleep stages. The first stage is a very light sleep from which it is easy to wake up. The second stage moves into a slightly deeper sleep, and stages three and four represent our deepest sleep. Our brain activity throughout these stages is gradually slowing down so that by deep sleep, we experience nothing but delta brain waves -- the slowest brain waves. About 90 minutes after we go to sleep and after the fourth sleep stage, we begin REM sleep.Rapid eye movement (REM) was discovered in 1953 by University of Chicago researchers Eugene Aserinsky, a graduate student in physiology, and Nathaniel Kleitman, Ph.D., chair of physiology. REM sleep is primarily characterized by movements of the eyes and is the fifth stage of sleep. How to Improve Your Dream RecallIt is said that five minutes after the end of a dream, we have forgotten 50 percent of the dream's content. Ten minutes later, we've forgotten 90 percent of its content. Why is that? We don't forget our daily actions that quickly. The fact that they are so hard to remember makes their importance seem less. There are many resources both on the Web and in print that will give you tips on how to improve your recall of dreams. Those who believe we have a lot to learn about ourselves from our dreams are big proponents of dream journals. Here are some steps you can take to increase your dream recall:●When you go to bed, tell yourself you will remember your dreams.●Set your alarm to go off every hour and half so you'll wake up around the times that you leave REM sleep -- when you're most likely to remember your dreams. (Or, drink a lot of water before you go to bed to ensure you have to wake up at least once in the middle of the night!)●Keep a pad and pencil next to your bed.●Try to wake up slowly to remain within the "mood" of your last dream.Common Dream Themes and Their Interpretations●Being naked in publicMost of us have had the dream at some point that we're at school, work or some social event, and we suddenly realize we forgot to put on clothes! Experts say this means:◆We're trying to hide something (and without clothes we have a hard time doing that).◆We're not prepared for something, like a presentation or test (and now everyone is going to know -- we're exposed!).If we're naked but no one notices, then the interpretation is that whatever we're afraid of is unfounded. If we don't care that we're naked, the interpretation is that we're comfortable with who we are.●FallingYou're falling, falling, falling... and then you wake up. This is a very common dream and is said to symbolize insecurities and anxiety. Something in your life is essentially out of control and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Another interpretation is that you have a sense of failure about something. Maybe you're not doing well in school or at work and are afraid you're going to be fired or expelled. Again, you feel that you can't control the situation.●Being chasedThe ever-popular chase dream can be extremely frightening. What it usually symbolizes is that you're running away from your problems. What that problem is depends on who is chasing you. It may be a problem at work, or it may be something about yourself that you know is destructive. For example, you may be drinking too much, and your dream may be telling you that your drinking is becoming a real problem.●Taking an exam (or forgetting that you have one)This is another very common dream. You suddenly realize you are supposed to be taking an exam at that very moment. You might be running through the hallways and can't find the classroom. This type of dream can have several variations that have similar meanings. (Maybe your pen won't write, so you can't finish writing your answers.) What experts say this may mean is that you're being scrutinized about something or feel you're being tested -- maybe you're facing a challenge you don't think you're up to. You don't feel prepared or able to hold up to the scrutiny. It may also mean there is something you've neglected that you know needs your attention.●FlyingMany flying dreams are the result of lucid dreaming (清醒梦). Not all flying dreams are, however. Typically, dreaming that you are flying means you are on top of things. You are incontrol of the things that matter to you. Or, maybe you've just gained a new perspective on things. It may also mean you are strong willed and feel like no one and nothing can defeat you. If you are having problems maintaining your flight, someone or something may be standing in the way of you having control. If you are afraid while flying, you may have challenges that you don't feel up to.●Running, but going nowhereThis theme can also be part of the chasing dream. You're trying to run, but either your legs won't move or you simply aren't going anywhere -- as if you were on a treadmill (踏车). According to some, this dream means you have too much on your plate. You're trying to do too many things at once and can't catch up or ever get ahead.1. This passage mainly discusses different theories about why we have dreams at night.2. Early theories held that dreams were reflection of people’s real, physical worlds.3. According to physiological theories, dreaming allows us to sort through problems or events of the day that require our attention.4. REM occurs at the third and fourth stage during which we experience the deepest sleep.5. The reason why dreams do not seem important is that they are very difficult to remember.6. Trying to get recorded what you said or did in your dream can help increase your dream recall.7. If a person dreams he is naked but is not noticed by others, it means what he is afraid of is groundless.1.[Y][N][NG]2.[Y][N][NG]3.[Y][N][NG]4.[Y][N][NG]5.[Y][N][NG]6.[Y][N][NG]7.[Y][N][NG]8. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks numbered from 36 to 43 with the exact words you have heard. For blanks numbered from 44 to 46 you are required to fill in the missing information. For these blanks, you can either use the exact words you have just heard or wirte down the main points in your own words. Finally, when the passage is read for the third time, you should check what you have written. We have been discussing how a computer works. Now let us turn to another (36) : What are the uses of a computer? Many laymen have an (37) picture of what computers are capable of Sometimes computers are called "electronic brains "and this is (38) because no computer so far built can (39) with the human brain in all respects. Let us take a look at the (40) of computers in commerce and industry. Firstly, clerical work. Computers are very good for (41) repetitive clerical work efficiently. We can take two examples of this. The first is the (42) use of computers in handling payrolls, that is, paying employees. With details about each employee in it, the computer can make necessary (43) and print out a pay slip. (44) .Secondly, the use of computers in information systems.(45) . The main computer store for British Airways Boadicea system has a constant record of the details of every flight. Thirdly, the computer as an aid to design planning. The example has to do with predicting the cost of a design if one were planning to build a road.(46) .This information can be fed into a computer and the computer can be programmed to work out the cheapest route between two points.Part ⅣReading Comprehension(Reading in Depth) (25 minutes)Section ADirections: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once.Questions 47 to 56 are based on the following passage.A department store’s inputs include the land upon which the building is located, the labor of the employees, (47) ______ in the form of building, equipment and merchandise, and the management skills of the store managers. On a farm, the operation system is the transformation that occurs when a farmer’s (48) ______ (land, equipment, labor, etc.) are converted into such outputs as corn, wheat or milk. The exact form of the conversion process (49) ______ from industry to industry, but it is an (50) ______phenomenon that exists in every industry. Economists refer to this (51) ______ of resources into goods and services as the production function. For alloperation systems, the general goal is to create some kind of value-added outputs that are worth more to consumers than just the sum of the inputs. To the consumers, the resulting products (52) ______ utility due to the form, the time, or the place of their availability from the conversion process. However, the process is subject to random changes. Unplanned or uncontrollable influences may cause the actual output to differ from planned output. Random fluctuations can arise from external disruption (fire, floods or lightning, for example) or from (53) ______ problems inherent in the conversion process. Inherent variability of equipment, material imperfections, and human errors all affect output quality (54)______. In fact, random variations are the rule rather than the exception in production processes; therefore, (55) _____ variation becomes a major management task. The function of the feedback is to provide (56) ______ linkages. Without some feedback of information, management personnel cannot control operations because they don' t know the results of their directions.A) offerB) capitalC) mediumD)difficultE) variesF) differentlyG) proposalH) transformation I) beautifullyJ) economicK) reducingL) internalM) inputsN) affordO) informationSection BDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. Most of the people who appear most often and most gloriously in the history books are great conquerors and generals and soldiers, whereas the people who really helped civilization forward are often never mentioned at all. We do not know who first set a broken leg, or launched a seaworthy boat, or calculated the length of the year, or manured(施肥)a field; but we know all about the killers and destroyers. People think a great deal of them, so much so that on all the highest pillars in the great cities of the world you will find the figure of a conqueror or a general or a soldier. And I think most people believe that the greatest countries are those that have beaten in battle the greatest number of other countries and ruled over them as conquerors. It is just possible they are, but they are not the most civilized.Animals fight; so do savages (野蛮人); hence to be good at fighting is to be good in the way in which an animal or a savage is good, but it is not to be civilized. Even being good at getting other people to fight for you and telling them how to do it most efficiently --- this, after all, is what conquerors and generals have done --- is not being civilized. People fight to settle quarrels. Fighting means killing, and civilized peoples ought to be able to find some way of settling their disputes other than by seeing which side can kill off the greater number of the other side, and then saying that that side which has killed most has won. And it not only has won, but, because it has won, has been in the right. For that is what going to war means; it means saying that might is right. That is what the story of mankind has on the whole been like. Even our own age has fought the two greatest wars in history, in which millions of people were killed or disabled. And while today it is true that people do not fight and kill each other in the streets --- while, that is to say, we have got to the stage of keeping the rules and behaving properly to each other in daily life --- nations and countries have not learnt to do this yet, and still behave like savages.57. In the opening sentence the author indicates that ________.A) most history books were written by conquerors, generals and soldiers.B) those who truly helped civilization forward is rarely mentioned in history books.C) history books focus more on conquerors than on those who helped civilization forward.D) conquerors, generals and soldiers should not be mentioned in history books.58. In the author’s opinion, the countries that ruled over a large number of other countries are ________.A) certainly both the greatest and the most civilizedB) neither the most influential nor the most civilized.C) possibly the most civilized but not the most powerful.D) likely the greatest in some sense but not the most civilized.59. The meaning of “That is what going to war means; it means saying that might is right.”(Last sentence of Paragraph 2) is that ________.A) those who fight believe that the winner is right and the loser wrong.B) only those who are powerful have the right to go to war.C) those who are right should fight against those who are wrong.D) in a war only those who are powerful will win.60. In the third paragraph, what the author wants to convey to us is that ________.A) World War I and World War II are different from previous wars.B) our age is not much better than those of the past.C) modern time is not so civilized compared with the past.D) we have fought fewer wars but suffered heavier casualties.61. This passage is most likely taken from an article entitled ________.A) War and World PeaceB) Creators of CivilizationC) Civilization and HistoryD) Who Should Be RememberedPassage TwoQuestions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage. The motor vehicle has killed and disabled more people in its brief history than any bomb or weapon ever invented. Much of the blood on the street flows essentially from uncivil behavior of drivers who refuse to respect the legal and moral rights of others. So the massacre on the road may be regarded as a social problem. In fact, the enemies of society on wheels are rather harmless people or ordinary people acting carelessly, you might say. But it is a principle both of law and common morality that carelessness is no excuse when one's actions could bring death or damage to others. A minority of the killers go even beyond carelessness to total negligence.Researchers have estimated that as many as 80 per cent of all automobile accidents can be attributed to the psychological condition of the driver. Emotional upsets can distort drivers' reactions, slow their judgment, and blind them to dangers that might otherwise be evident. The experts warn that it is vital for every driver to make a conscious effort to keep one's emotions under control.Yet the irresponsibility that accounts for much of the problem is not confined to drivers. Street walkers regularly violate traffic regulations; they are at fault in most vehicle walker accidents. And many cyclists even believe that they are not subject to the basic rules of the road.Significant legal advances have been made towards safer driving in the past few years. Safety standards for vehicle have been raised both at the point of manufacture and through periodic road-worthiness inspections. In addition, speed limits have been lowered. Due to these measures, the accident rate has decreased. But the accident experts still worry because there has been little or no improvement in the way drivers behave. The only real and lasting solution, say the experts, is to convince people that driving is a skilled task requiring constant care and concentration. Those who fail to do all these things pose a threat to those with whom they share the road.62. The word “massacre”in line 3 paragraph one means _____A) mass-killing.B) disaster.C) tragedy.D) accident.63. What is the author's main purpose in writing the passage?A) To show that the motor vehicle is a very dangerous invention.B) To promote understanding between careless drivers and street walkers.C) To discuss traffic problems and propose possible solutions.D) To warn drivers of the importance of safe driving.64. According to the passage, traffic accidents may be regarded as a social problem because _____.A) autos have become most destructive to mankindB) people usually pay little attention to law and moralityC) civilization brings much harm to peopleD) the lack of virtue is becoming more severe65. Why does the author mention the psychological condition of the driver in Paragraph Three?A) To give an example of the various reasons for road accidents.B) To show how important it is for drivers to be emotionally healthy.C) To show some of the inaccurate estimations by researchers.D) To illustrate the hidden tensions in the course of driving.66. Who are NOT mentioned as being responsible for the road accidents?A) Careless bicycle-riders.B) Mindless people walking in the street.C) Irresponsible drivers.D) Irresponsible manufactures of automobiles.Part V他们毒害年轻人的心灵,腐化年轻人的灵魂。
Sample TestPart I Reading Comprehension (35 minutes,40 points)Directions: There are four reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C) and D). After you read a passage you should decide on the best choice and then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.A fire drill is, to put it mildly, an inconvenient exercise at the best of times.A fire drill at 2:00 in the morning in terrible weather conditions, like the one we had on Thursday night and Friday morning last, is incomparably more inconvenient. This is why writing this note to thank you all most sincerely for your excellent co-operation and the spirit with which you endured the inconvenience.A fire drill is not an idle exercise. It is an extremely serious one and can, in fact, save lives in the long run. Last week’ fire dril l has already revealed a number of important things regarding fire precautions in the Hall. For instance, there seem to exit a number of “deaf spots” in the Hall, namely, the two rooms in Purser House and some rooms in the Bottom corridor. I have no reason to doubt that residents from these areas could not hear the alarm. I shall request an immediate examination of this problem.I should, also, remind you that it is a requirement that fire drills should be regularly carried out (at least two in every one year)and each resident should be made fully aware of this and obliged to take part. All residents must take fire precautions with the seriousness they deserve. Failure to do so can result bin fines and expulsion(驱逐)from the Hall. Thank you again for your co-operation.1. The last fire drill caused much more inconvenience because_________.A) it was in bad weather B) there were “deaf spots”C) a big fire started D) it was at the weekend2. The phrase “in the long run”(L.2,Pa rt.2)means_________.A)effectively B) endlessly C) eventually D) efficiently3. Some people did not make their appearance at the last drill because_______.A) they were deaf B)they could not hear the alarmC) nobody waked them up D) they refused to leave their rooms4. Afire drill is extremely important according to the writer for_________.A) it is a good physical exercise B) it cultivates people’s endurance C) it is a legal requirement D) it can save lives in case of a fire5. Which of the following was NOT stated by the author?A) A fire drill is very important and useful.B) The last fire drill received inactive co-operation from the residents.C) Those who do not take fire precautions will be fined and driven out.D) It has been made a rule that fire drills will be performed regularly. Passage TwoQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passageAccidents are caused; they don’t just happen. The reason may be easy to see: a shelf out of reach, a patch of ice on the misfortune—frustration, tiredness or just bad temper—that show what the accident really is, a sort of attack on oneself.Road accidents, for example, happen frequently after a family quarrel, and we all know people who are accident-prone, so often at odds with themselves and the world that they seem to cause accidents for themselves and others.By definition, an accident is something you can not predict or avoid, and the idea which used to be current, that the majority of road accidents are caused by a minority of criminally careless drivers, is not supported by insurance statistics. These show that most accidents involve ordinary motorists in a moments of carelessness or thoughtlessness. It is not always clear, either, what sort of conditions make people more likely to have an accident. For instance, the law requires all factories to take safety precautions and most companies have safety committees to make sure the regulations are observed, but still, every day in Britain, some fifty thousand men and women are injured from work due to accidents. These accidents are largely the result of human error or misjudgment—noise and fatigue, boredom or worry are possible factors which contribute to this. Doctors who work in factories have found that those who drink too much, usually people who have a high anxiety level, run three times the normal risk of accidents at work.6. The passage suggests that________.A)Accidents are usually caused by psychological factors.B)Accidents mostly result from slippery roads.C)Drinkers run three times the normal risk of accidents in factories.D)About 50 000people lose their lives at work in Britain every day.7. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a factor of accidents?A) Mood. B) Tiredness. C) Carelessness D) Weather8. The word “accidents-prone”(L.2 Para.2)means________.A) likely to have accidents B) injured in accidentsC) possible to die in accidents D) responsible for road accidents9. What can we infer about the author’ opinion of accidents?A) Safety precautions are of little use in accidents.B) Many accidents can and should be avoided.C) Factory accidents , unlike road accidents, are inevitable.D) Most road accidents are caused by just a few careless drivers.10. The best title for the passage would be __________.A) Accidents and AnxietyB) How to Deal with Accidents on Road and in FactoriesC) Human Factors in AccidentsD) How to Prevent Accidents on Road and in FactoriesPassage ThreeQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. Is language, like food, a basic human need? Judging from the result of the violent experiment by a German King, Frederick II, in the 13th century, it may be. Hoping to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue, he told the nurses to keep silent. All the infants died before the first year. But clearly there was more than language deprivation here. What was missing was good mothering. Without good mothering, in the first year of life especially, the capacity to survive is seriously affected.Today no much violent deprivation exists as that by Frederick II. Nevertheless, some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to the signals of the infant, whose brain is programmed to map up language rapidly. There are critical times, it seems, when children learn more readily. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring language skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again.Linguists(语言学家)suggest that speech stages are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ.Recent evidence suggests that an infant is born with the capacity to speak. What is special about Man’s brain compared with that of the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of , say, a teddy-bear(玩具熊)with the sound pattern “teddy-bear”.But speech has to be stimulated, and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the signals in the child’s babbling(牙牙学语), grasping, crying, smiling, and responds to them. Insensitivity of the mother to these signals dulls the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals. Sensitivity to the child’s non-verbal signals is essential to the growth and development language.11. Frederick II’s experiment was violent because_________.A) he wanted to prove children are born with ability to speakB) he ignored the importance of mothering to the infantC) he was unkind to the nurseD) he wanted his nurses to say no mother tongue12. The reason some children are backward in speaking today that_________.A) their mothers do not respond to their attempts to speakB) their mothers are not intelligent enough to help themC) they do not listen carefully to their mothersD) their brains have to absorb too much language at once.13. By “critical times” in Paragraph 3 the author means__________.A) difficult periods in the child’s lifeB) moments when the child becomes critical to its motherC) important stages in the child’s developmentD) times when mothers often neglect their children14. Which of the following in NOT implied in the passage?A) Ability to learn to speak a language is inborn in manB) Children do not need to be encouraged to learn to speakC) Early language starters are not necessarily highly intelligentD) Most children learn their language in definite stages15. If the mother does not respond to her child’s signals_________.A) the child will never be able to speak properlyB) the child will stop giving out signalsC) the child will invent a language of his ownD) the child will make little effort to speakPassage FourQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.Americans who remember “the good old days”are not alone in complaining about the educational system in this country. Immigrants(移民) complain ,too. Lately a German friend was filled with anger when he learned that the mathematics test given to his son on his first day as a college freshman included multiplication and division. Japanese businessmen in Los Angeles send their children to private schools staffed by teachers imported from Japan to learn mathematics at Japanese levels, generally considered at least a year more advanced than the level here. But I wonder: If American education is so poor, why is it that this is still the country of innovation(创新)?When I was 12 in Indonesia, I had to memorize the name of all the world’s major cities, from Kabul to Karachi. At the same age, my son, who was brought up by a Californian, thought that Buenos Aires was Spanish for good food. However, unlike children of his age in Asia and Europe, my son had studied creative geography. When he was only 6, he drew a map of the route that he traveled to get to school, including the streets, the traffic signs and the housesthat he passed.Dissatisfied American parents forget that in this country their children are able to experiment freely with ideas; without this they will not really be able to think or to believe in themselves.Critics of American education cannot grasp one thing: freedom. America, I think, is the only country that extends even to children the license to freely speak, write and be creative. Our public education certainly is not perfect, but it is a great deal better than any other. I think I have found the answer to my question.16. From the text we learn that_________.A) both Americans and immigrants are dissatisfied with the quality of American educationB) the author shares the general idea that American education is worse than education in many other countriesC) Japanese schools in America require their American teachers to teach mathematics at Japanese levelsD) the author’s German friend was a little displeased because the mathematics test for his son was too easy.17. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?A) If children are not allowed to experiment freely with ideas they won’t grow up independent and creative.B) Most Americans think the present American educational system is not as good as it used to be.C) Private schools run by Japanese businessmen maintain a higher level than American public schools.D) Americans are more innovative than other people in the world.19. For each question, there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer and mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET TWO.PASSAGE ONE(1) Philip had a squeamish appetite, and the thick slabs of poor batter on the bread turned his stomach, but he saw. other boys scraping it off and followed their example. They all had potted meats and such like, which they had brought in their play-boxes; and some had ‘extras,’ eggs or bacon, upon which Mr. Watson made a profit. When he had asked Mr. Carey whether Phillip was to have these, Mr. Carey replied that he did not think boys should be spoilt. Mr. Watson quite agreed with him—he considered nothing was better than bread and batter for growing lads—but some parents, unduly pampering their offspring, insisted on it.(2) Philip noticed that ‘extras’gave boys a certain consideration and made up his mind, when he wrote to Aunt Louisa, to ask for them.(3) After breakfast the boys wandered out into the playground. Here the day-boys were gradually assembling. They were sons of the local clergy, of the officers at the depot, and of such manufacturers or men of business as the old town possessed. Presently a bell rang, and they all trooped into school. This consisted of a large, long room at opposite ends of which two under-masters conducted the second and third forms, and of a smaller one, leading out of it, used by Mr. Watson, who taught the first form. To attach the preparatory to the senior school these three classes were known officially, on speech days and in reports, as upper, middle, and lower second. Philip was put in the last. The master, a red-faced man with a pleasant voice, was called Rice; he had a cheerful manner with boys, and the time passed quickly. Philip was surprised when it was quarter to eleven and they were let out for ten minutes’ rest.(4) The whole school rushed noisily into the playground. The new boys were told to go into the middle, while the others stationed themselves along opposite walls. They began to play Pig in the Middle.”The old boys ran from wall to wall while the new boys tried to catch them: when. one was seized and the mystic words said—one, two, three, and a pig for me—he became a prisoner and, turning sides, helped to catch those who were still free. Philip saw a boy running past and tried to catch him but his limp gave him no chance; and the runners taking their opportunity, made straight for the ground he covered. Then one of them had the brilliant idea of imitating Philip’s clumsy run. Other boys saw it andbegan to laugh; then they all copied the first; and they ran round Philip, limping comically, screaming with shrill laughter. They lost their heads with the delight of their new amusement, and choked with helpless merriment. One of them tripped Philip up and he fell, heavily as he always fell, and cat his knee. They laughed all the louder when he got up. A boy pushed him from behind, and he would have fallen again if another had not caught him. The game was forgotten in the entertainment of Philip’s deformity. Philip was completely scared. He could not make out why they were laughing at him. His heart beat so that he could hardly breathe, and he was more frightened than he had ever been in his life. He stood still stupidly while the boys ran round him, mimicking and laughing; they shouted to him to try and catch them; but he did not move. He did not want them to see him run any more. He was using all his strength to prevent himself from crying.41. He felt himself stupid.PASSAGE TWO(1) For parents who send their kids off to college saying, “These will be the best years of your life,”it would be very appropriate to add, “If you can handle the stress of college life.”(2) Today’s college experience is much different than it was a generation ago—and not just because of higher tuition bills and Facebook. Today’s students are under a massive amount of stress.(3) Freshmen are showing up already stressed out, according to the latest research study that reported students’ emotional health levels at their lowest since the survey started in 1985. While in school, more students are working part-time and near-full-time jobs. At graduation, only 29 percent of seniors have jobs lined up.(4) Pressure to excel often creates stress, and many students are not learning how to effectively handle this stress. Some students drop out or transfer, while an alarming number turn to alcohol. Instead, these students should build their emotional and mental resilience.(5) My colleague Robert A. Rees, a former dean at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a former director at the Institute of HeartMath, and I wrote a new book, “The College De-Stress Handbook: Keeping Cool Under Pressure from the Inside Out,” to put the intimate knowledge of stress and proven methods for handling it in the context of higher education.(6) As we say in the book: “One of the most rewarding times for college students is when they first sense that their gifts, talents and abilities are beginning to blossom. This realization is generally accompanied by increased self-confidence and a keener sense of direction and purpose. Many things become clearer. During such times, students tap into a state that heightens their focus and increases their creativity and productivity.(7) Let me share five facts that I believe every college student should know about stress.(8) First, stress can make smart people do stupid things. Stress causes what brain researchers call“cortical inhibition”. In simple terms, stress hinders a part of the brain responsible for decision-making and reaction time and can adversely affect other mental abilities as well.(9) Second, the human body doesn’t discriminate between a big stressful event and a little one. Any stressful experience will create about 1,400 biochemical events in your body. If any amount of stress is left unchecked, many things can occur within the body, including premature aging, impaired cognitive function and energy drain.(10) Third, stress can become your new pattern. When you regularly experience negative feelings and high amounts of stress, your brain recognizes this as your normal state. This then becomes the new pattern, or baseline for your emotional state.(11) Over time, high stress can become dangerous because you are constantly flooding your system with cortisol-the stress hormone-and adrenaline. When you’re in this flight or fight state it also increases your heart rate, elevates your blood pressure, alters your immune system responses and suppresses the digestive system. It can even suppress the reproductive system and growth processes. The bottom line is that long-term activation of the stress-response puts you at increased risk of numerous health problems, including: depression, sleep problems, memory impairment, obesity, digestive problems and more.(12) Fourth, stress can be controlled. Countless studies demonstrate that people can restructure their emotional state using emotion- refocusing techniques. These techniques help you recognize how you are feeling and shift to a more positive emotional, mental and physical state.(13) One technique involves slowing your thoughts and focusing on your heartbeat, breathing slowly and deeply, and focusing on the positive feeling that you receive.(14) Finally, stress can be lessened if you love what you study. Barbara Frederickson, a leading international authority on the importance of positive emotions, says humans are genetically programmed to seek positive emotions such as love and joy. It is suggested to choose a major or career path you love and enjoy. Otherwise, you could end up fighting against your own biology.44. T he author cites the latest research study in order to show that ____________.A. students are studying harder in collegeB. most students have part-time jobs nowC. stress continues to the time of graduationD. students only feel stressed while in school45. A ccording to the passage, stress might cause all the following negative effects EXCEPT ________.A. socialB. mentalC. emotionalD. physical46. I n the author’s opinion, stress can be controlled by ____________.A. doing what you preferB. focusing on your emotional stateC. finding a more positive feeling firstD. identifying your present emotional state first47. W hich of the following is the best as the title of the passage?A. Causes of Stress.B. Types of Stress.C. College Life and Stress.D. Stress and Control Methods.PASSAGE THREE(1) The period of adolescence has fascinated people of all ages. Adolescence means ‘growing-up’and strictly speaking should apply to a child from birth to maturity. Why then do we use it for this teenage period alone? Because when we speak of the adolescent as ‘growing-up’, we mean that the youth is leaving behind the phase of protective childhood and is becoming independent, capable of going out to fend for himself.(2) A characteristic of ‘growing-up’ is a desire to be venturesome—so unlike the dependence of thechild and the set ways of the adult. The adolescent seeks for new experience in life, and likes roughing it. In their camps and hiking, for example, boys and girls seek uncomfortable and difficult conditions—and then set about making themselves comfortable in them. They deliberately seek difficulties in order to overcome them.(3) The adolescent also loves responsibility. The boy likes to be given the job of packing the luggage in the car; the girl, the responsibility of getting the younger children ready for the trip. This is a natural urge and requires expression.(4) The healthy adolescent boy or girl likes to do the real things in life, to do the things that matter. He would rather be a plumber’s mate and do a real job that requires doing than learn about hydrostatics sitting at a desk, without understanding what practical use they are going to be. A girl would rather look after the baby than learn about child care. Logically we should learn about things before doing them and that is presumably why the experts enforce this in our educational system. But it is not the natural way—nor, I venture to think, the best way. The adolescent wants to do things first for only then does he appreciate the problems involved and want to learn more about them.(5) They do these things better in primitive life, for there the adolescent boy joins his father in making canoes and going out fishing or hunting. He is serving his apprenticeship in the actual accomplishments of life. It is not surprising that anthropologists (人类学家) find that the adolescents of primitive communities do not suffer from the same neurotic(神经质的) “difficulties”as those of civilized life. This is not, as some assume, because they are permitted more freedom, but because they are given more natural outlets for their native interests and powers and allowed to grow up freely into a full life of responsibility in the community.(6) In the 19th century this was recognized in the apprenticeship system, which allowed the boy to go out with the master carpenter or thatcher, to engage in the actual work of carpentry or roof-mending, and so to learn his trade. In some agricultural colleges at the present time young men have to do a year’s work on a farm before their theoretical training at college. The great advantage of this system is that it lets the apprentice see the practical problems before he sets to work learning how to solve them, and he can therefore take a more intelligent interest in his theoretical work.(7) Since more knowledge of more things is now required in order to cope with the adult world, the period of growing-up to independence takes much longer than it did in a more primitive community, and the responsibility for such education, which formerly was in the hands of the parents, is now necessarily undertaken by experts at school. But that should not make us lose sight of the basic principle, namely the need and the desire of the adolescent to engage responsibility in the real pursuits of life and then to learn how-to learn through responsibility, not to learn before responsibility.48. T he main advantage of the natural way of education, whether in primitive or modern times, is thatlearners ____________.A. are given opportunities to develop their interest firstB. are given more freedom in doing things and learningC. can work with their masters throughout their learningD. can learn the trade through solving problems at work49. A ccording to the author, learning should now be done in school for all the following reasonsEXCEPT that ____________.A. more subjects are to be coveredB. more parents should be involved in teachingC. there should be a deeper understanding of a subjectD. more time is needed for becoming independent50. W hich of the following best sums up the author’s main point?A. The apprenticeship system was effective in learning.B. Students should be given more freedom in learning.C. Students develop their interest through learning.D. Learning to solve problems is learning through responsibility.SECTION B SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONSIn this section there are five short answer questions based on the passages in Section A. With the tools of technology, man has altered many physical features of the earth. However, these changes in the physical environment have not always had beneficial results. Today, pollution of the air and water is a danger to the health of the planet. Smoke from factories pollutes the air of industrialized areas and the surrounding countryside. The pollution of water is equally harmful. It is now necessary for man to limit the growth of technology in order to survive on earth.PART II LISTENING COMPREHENSIONSECTION A1. intellectual2. harvest3. better participation4. digestion5. skimming6. surface meanings7. detailed8. textual9. counterevidence 10. interests SECTION B1. Many people think young people should be given opportunities to exercise leadership. In their views, there are three factors contributing to this attitude. In the first place, with innovative ideas and endless vitality, young leaders can keep an organization invigorating and sustainable. Furthermore, young people are always innovators and explorers, who can bring great possibilities to the development of an organization. Finally, young leaders are easier to carry out their work since they have less to worry about in terms of personal matters. However, others think that young people cannot handle the emergencies better than the old. They also believe that elderly people are more qualified to be leaders since they are more experienced. Besides, there is no denying that people may disobey the orders of young leaders just because they are too young. As far as I am concerned, I firmly support the view that young people should be encouraged to be leaders because youth means limitless possibilities. However, young people should receive related training before they become leaders. Besides, they still have a lot to learn from the old.2014-TEM4-11。

Rescue of Joe BrookPassage TwoThe ships in which men hunt whales are very strongly constructed. The crew must be both courageous and strong, because they are going to fight the biggest of all animals. Many of the whaling ships sail from Norway, which is famous for its sailors. When a whaling ship reaches the whaling grounds (the part of the sea where whales are found). All the sailors keep a watch for whales. One at a time they stand high up on a mast so that they can see a great distance.Whales breathe air as we do. When they breathe out, the air mixes with water, and a jet of water is shot up above the surface of the sea. The sailor up above watches for these jets of water. When he sees one of them, he shouts, “There she blows!”Motor-boats, called whalers, are lowered to the water, and they speed off towards the whale, and try to get close to the whale while it is still on the surface. An exciting moment comes when a harpoon is shot. This is a sharp spear with hooks that prevents it from being pulled out after it has gone into the whale. It is fastened to a long, light but very strong rope, which is carefully placed in the boat so that it will run out smoothly. As soon as the whale is struck by the harpoon, it drives deep under and swims away as fast as it can. It pulls the rope after it and the whaling boat follows on the surface at full speed. Soon the whale comes up to the surface to breathe. The whalers want to be near when it comes up, in order to shoot another harpoon at it.There is always the danger that the whale may turn round and attack the boat which is following it. The whale has a very strong tail, with which it can attack the boat and destroy it. The whalers watch for the attack. They get out of the way as quickly as they can, and once more they attack. They get out of the way to fire the harpoon gun.At last the whale tires itself out. The whalers follow it, so as to be near when the great whale floats dead on the sea. The whaling ship is brought close to the whale, and the whalers begin to cut out the blubber for which they have fought so hard. It is heated in large pots and the oil is poured into barrels or other containers in which it is stored. When the ship has a full load it returns to port.21. Therefore the number of cars on road keeps increasing year by year. This trend is undoubtedly a positive sign of a wealthier population. Yet the side effects of it appear at the same time. The cities are becoming more crowded, the air is seriously polluted and the noise is very disturbing. The government should persuade people to choose public transportation and special measures could be taken to control the amount of cars on road. After all, convenience should not be realized by destroying the environment people live in. (121 words)文章来源:/p/ck.html 更多成考资源资料下载完全免费。

Although this is a good description for many deserts, Earth' s largest desert is actually a very cold place covered with ice: Antarctica. In order for an area to be considered a desert, it must receive very little rainfall. More specifically, it must receive an average of less than ten inches of precipitation--which can be rain, sleet, hail, or snow--on the ground every year. Antarctica, the coldest place on earth, has an average temperature that usually falls below the freezing point. And because cold air holds less moisture than warm air, the air in Antarctica does not hold much moisture at all. This is evident in the low precipitation statistics recorded for Antarctica. For example, the central part of Antarctica receives an average of less than two inches of snow every year. The coastline of Antarctica receives a little bit more--between seven and eight inches a year. Because Antarctica gets so little precipitation every year, it is considered a desert. When precipitation falls in hot deserts, it quickly evaporates back into the atmosphere. The air over Antarctica is too cold to hold water vapor, so there is very little evaporation. Due to this low rate of evaporation, most of the snow that falls to the ground remains there permanently, eventually building up into thick ice sheets. Any snow that does not freeze into ice sheets becomes caught up in the strong winds that constantly blow over Antarctica. These snow-filled winds can make it look as if it is snowing. Even though snowfall is very rare there, blizzards are actually very common on Antarctica.36. The main purpose of paragraph 1 is toA. accept a conclusionB. introduce an argumentC. provide a brief historyD. deny a common belief37. The best title for this passage would beA. Such discoveries are so frequent these days that hardly anybody pays heed to them. However, when the Lascaux cave complex was discovered in 1940,the world was amazed. Painted directly on its walls were hundreds of scenes showing how people lived thousands of years ago. The scenes show people hunting animals, such as bison or wild cats. Other images depict birds and, most noticeably, horses, which appear in more than 300 wall images, by far outnumbering all other animals.Early artists drawing these animals accomplished a monumental and difficult task. They did not limit themselves to the easily accessible walls but carried their painting materials to spaces that required climbing steep walls or crawling into narrow passages in the Lascaux complex. Unfortunately, the paintings have been exposed to the destructive action of water and temperature changes, which easily wear the images away. Because the Lascaux caves have many entrances, air movement has also damaged the images inside.Although they are not out in the open air, where natural light would have destroyed them long ago, many of the images have deteriorated and are barely recognizable. To prevent further damage, the site was closed to tourists in 1963,23 years after it was discovered.44. Based on the passage, what is probably true about the south of France?A. It is home to rare animals.B. It has a large number of caves.C. It is known for horse-racing events.D. It has attracted many famous artists.45. According to the passage, which animals appear most often on the cave walls?A. Birds.B. Bison.C. Horses.D. Wild cats.46. Why was painting inside the Lascaux complex a difficult task?A. It was completely dark inside.B. The caves were full of wild animals.C. Painting materials were hard to find.D. Many painting spaces were difficult to reach.47. According to the passage, all of the following have caused damage to the paintings EXCEPTA. temperature changesB. air movementC. waterD. lightPassage FourGold used in jewelry is mixed with harder metals to add strength and durability. The metals added can also be used to change gold' s color, giving it a fashionable rose or white tint, or to lighten or darken the natural yellow tone of pure gold. Mixtures like these, of less costly metals with more valuable ones, are called alloys. Copper and silver are the most common metals mixed with gold to make yellow gold jewelry. White gold is usually made with an alloy of gold andnickel. The measure of gold' s purity is called a karat. The higher the karat rating, the higher the amount of pure gold: 24 karat is pure gold, 15 karat is 75% pure gold, 14 karat is 58.5% pure gold, and 9 karat is 37.5% pure gold. All other things being equal, the higher the percentage of pure gold used in the alloy, the more valuable and expensive the jewelry will be.Gold jewelry pieces are usually stamped with a marking to identify the karat amount. While gold that is 24K is too soft for jewelry, 18K, 14K and 9K gold are all appropriate for jewelry, and they all make pieces that look great and wear beautifully.48. Which of the following statements best captures the main idea of this passage?A. Although gold is very valuable, it is also very expensive.B. Gold jewelry is stamped with its karat weight.C. Gold jewelry is made using alloys.D. Colored gold is more valuable than white gold.49. Based on information in the passage, it can be understood that pure gold isA. not used to make ringsB. stamped with 100KC. an alloy of different metalsD. colorless50. According to the passage, the use of other metals in gold alloysⅠ. can be used to make the gold different colorⅡ. makes jewelry more expensiveⅢ. makes gold more flexibleA. I onlyB. I and ⅡonlyC. Ⅱand ⅢonlyD. I , Ⅱ,and Ⅲ51. Which of the following statements best explains the relationship between gold and its karat rating?A. The lower the karat rating, the purer the gold.B. The higher the karat rating, the more expensive the gold.C. The higher the karat rating, the less valuable the mixture.D. The lower the karat rating, the purer the alloy.Passage FiveIt is bad to have food stuck between your teeth for long periods of time. This is because food attracts germs, germs produce acid ,and acid hurts your teeth and gums. Flossing helps to remove the food that gets stuck between your teeth. This explains why flossing helps to keep your mouth healthy, but some doctors say that flossing can be also good for your heart. It may seem strange that something you do for your teeth can have any effect on your heart. Doctors have come up with a few ideas about how flossing works to keep your heart healthy. One idea is that the germs that hurt your teeth can leave the mouth and travel into your blood. Germs that get into the blood can then attack your heart. Another idea is based on the fact that when there are too many germs in your mouth, the body tries to fight against these germs. For some reason, the way the body fights these mouth germs may end up weakening the heart over time. Not every doctor agrees about these ideas. Some doctors think that the link between goodflossing habits and good heart health is only a coincidence. A coincidence is the occurrence of two or more events at one time apparently by mere chance. The incidence of these events is completely random, as they do not admit of any reliable cause and effect relationship between them. For example, every time I wash my car, it rains. This does not mean that when I wash my car, I somehow change the weather. This is only a coincidence. The theory that flossing your teeth helps to keep your heart healthy might not be true. But every doctor agrees that flossing is a great way to keep your teeth healthy. So even if flossing does not help your heart, it is sure to help your teeth. This is enough of a reason for everyone to floss their teeth every day.52. Flossing effectively helps to keep your mouth healthy by preventingA. germs from producing acidB. food from entering your bodyC. germs from entering into your bloodD. acid from contacting your teeth and gums53. In paragraph 2, the author explains how having too many germs in your mouth can “end up weakening the heart. " Using the passage as a guide, it can be understood that doctors areA. reluctant to hypothesizeB. confident in their estimationsC. extremely knowledgeableD. uncertain but speculative54. Using information in paragraph 3 as a guide, which of the following is the best example of a coincidence?A. Jim wakes up with a sore throat. He eats a piece of bacon for breakfast. By noon, he feels much better. Jim decides that the bacon has cured his sore throat.B. Laura remembers to brush her teeth every day, but she only remembers to floss once a week. She writes a note to herself, reminding herself to floss and sticks it to her bathroom mirror.C. Mario is not very good at baseball. He practices playing every day. After a several months of practice, he is a much better baseball player.D. Jai has a bad heart. Her doctor tells her to eat more vegetables and less junk food. After nearlya year of doing this, the doctor tells Jai that her heart is doing much better.55. Which of the following best states the main idea of the final paragraph?A. Because doctors do not agree that flossing wilt help your heart, it is useless to floss.B. It is a fact that flossing can help your heart as well as your teeth.C. Even if flossing is only good for your teeth, you should still do it every day.D. There is no good reason to believe that flossing will help your heart, but it is still a good idea to do it every day.V. 2014年成人高等教育本科毕业生申请学士学位外语考试Passage1It happened in February about twelve years ago.I had left school a couple of months before that and was not due to go to university until the following October.I was still living at home at the time. One morning I was in Richmond,a suburb of London near where I lived.I was looking for a temporary job so that I could save up some money to go traveling. As it was a fine day and I was in no hurry,I was taking my time, looking in shop windows, strolling in the park, and sometimes just stopping and looking around me.It must have been this obvious aimlessness that led to my downfall. It was about half past eleven when it happened.I was just walking out of the local library, having unsuccessfully sought employment there, when I saw a man walking across the road with the obvious intention of talking to me.I thought he was going to ask me the time.Instead,he said he was a police officer and he was arresting me.At first I thought it was some kind of joke. But then another policeman appeared, this time in uniform, and I was left in no doubt.'But what for?'I asked.'Wandering with intent to commit an arrestable offence,'he said.'What offence?'I asked.'Theft,'he said.'Theft of what?'I asked.'Milk bottles,'he said, and with a perfectly straight face too!'Oh,'I said.It turned out there had been a lot of petty thefts in the area, particularly that of stealing milk bottles from doorsteps. Then I made my big mistake. At the time I was nineteen, had long untidy hair, and regarded myself as part of the sixties''youth counterculture'.As a result,I wanted to appear cool and unconcerned with the incident,so I said,'How long have you been following me?'in the most casual and conversational tone I could manage.I thus appeared to them to be quite familiar with this sort of situation, and it confirmed them in their belief that I was a thoroughly disreputable character.A few minutes later a police car arrived.'Get in the back,'they said.'Put your hands on the back of the front seat and don't move them.' They got in on either side of me.It wasn't funny any more.1.At the time the story took place the author was_________.A.at schoolB.at collegeC.waiting to attend college later that yearD.working in the local library2.He went job-hunting in order that he might earn enough money_________.A.to support himselfB.to go to universityC.to take a journeyD.to hire a good lawyer3.The first man who came up to him was__________.A.a uniformed policemanB.a policeman in plainclothesC.not a policemanD.a good joker4.According to the passage, the story took place in_________.A.LondonB.RichmondC.local libraryD.school5.What does the word intention mean in the third paragraph?A.purposek bottleC.beliefD.situationPassage2Everybody in this world is different from one another. But do you know that understanding differences can help you better manage your money? As we grow up,we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on.Once this value system is set up,it’s not easy to change later in life. Financial experts say that everyone also has their own belief of how to manage their finances. This is the part of our value system and it has a great effect on the way we look after our money.According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are:the ant,the cricket and the snail. The ant—-work firstJust like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don’t care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest in some funds and stocks with low risk. The cricket–—fun firstThe cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn’t think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance. The snail–—living under pressureThe snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans(贷款)from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure if they can afford it.This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.6.According to this passage, value system______.A.is a set of our own values or beliefsB.is the way we look after our moneyC.will not change later in lifeD.is belief of how to manage our finances7.The ant refers to people who_______.A.work very hard in summer in order to store food for winterB.could make more money if they worked harderC.only care about enjoying the moment by working very hardD.save money for their later life when they get old and retire8.The crickets borrow money because________.A.they are youngB.they think they have no futureC.they would like to enjoy everything nowD.they want to buy insurance9.According to the last paragraph which of the following is TRUE?A.The snails enjoy life because they have luxury houses.B.The snails will take more loans if they realize that they can afford them.C.The snails take big long-term loans because the interest for the long-term loans is lower.D.The snails live under pressure and they may have problems in the future.10.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?A.To make us understand the difference and manage our money better.B.To make fun of the three kinds of foolish people.C.To make us understand we should spend our won moneyD.To state that we are the same as animals.Passage3In ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud and giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates for the doctor’s degree.Generally, however, modem examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modem industry.A room full of candidates for a state examination timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Generally, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an“objective”test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test, the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer.Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.11.What’s the most important examination type in the Middle Age?A.writing testB.listening testC.speaking testD.none of them12.The main idea of last paragraph is that________.A.workers now take examinationsrmation related to objective testC.there are only written examsD.examinations are now written and timed13.The exam in which students are required to select answers is__________.A.personalB.spokenC.objectiveD.written14.Which of the following is Not true about written test?A.the questions are the sameB.should be finished within limited timeC.teachers and students are expected to act like machinesD.machines to take tests15.It can be inferred from the passage that testing________.A.should test only opinionsB.should always be writtenC.has changed since the Middle AgesD.is given only in factoriesPassage4From the beginning of jazz, the trumpet was the king. The trumpet players were often the leaders, and in any case they played the leading role in the music. It was trumpet players like Bolden,Oliver, Armstrong, and Beiderbecke who got the glory. But by the early years of the1930’s,a relatively new instrument was beginning to push the trumpet aside. This was the saxophone. The saxophone was invented by a Belgian,Adolph Sax,in1840.Sax was trying to create an instrument which combined the carrying power of a brass instrument with the speed and facility of a clarinet. What he got was something quite different,an instrument that indeed could be played withspeed, but which had a rather muted sound. It has never been much used in symphony orchestras, and during the early days of jazz was rarely used. But by1910dance orchestras were beginning to use the saxophone as a novelty instrument. It looked funny, especially when the saxophonist had several different sizes of them lined up in front of him.And by about1920jazz musicians were beginning to take an interest in the instrument. For the most part, they played it very badly.Early jazz saxophone playing is sometimes quite painful to hear. But very quickly some players began to master the instrument.Three who did so were Bud Freeman, tenor saxophonist, who was part of gang around Beiderbecke’s sidekick,Frankie Trumbauer. But it was yet another player who was to really demonstrate the possibilities of the instrument. This was Coleman For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.Passage OneAsk a mom if she’s happier now that she has a child, and she’ll usually say yes. But psychologists who study happiness often report a different picture. Being the mom of a young child (especially one under 3) is rewarding, but also a real strain on your mood. "Moment to moment, you may be tired and sometimes angry, though kids do bring joy" says Peter Ubel, M.D., a professor of medicine and psychology at the University of Michigan. In fact, on their list of enjoyable activities, moms rank childcare lower than eating, exercising, or watching TV, according to a University of Michigan study, and kid care rates only slightly higher than housework, working, or commuting! One reason for the difference between moms and experts: selective memory. When psychologists ask moms in a general way if they like spending time with their kids, the overwhelming majority say they do because they’re thinking of fun activities like reading a book or playing in the park. When they’re specifically asked to describe their actual daily routine, they remember the hours they spent struggling to get their child dressed or ready for bed.Maybe, though, the psychologists are missing the intensity of joy that time spent with your child can bring. Luckily, those moments can overcome your daily frustrations. "Happiness is more than justthat smiley feeling," says Karen Reivich, Ph.D., a research associate in the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania. "It’s also feeling a connection to something larger than yourself. When people are in service to something bigger, they describe their lives as filled with meaning."16. Which of the following best summarizes Peter Ubel’s opinion of being the mom of a young child?A. It makes the mom exhausted.B. It is both rewarding and stressful.C. It makes the mom easily irritated.D. It is quite frustrating an experience.17. According to a University of Michigan study, which of the following ranks higher than childcare on moms’ list of enjoyable activities?A. eating, housework or commutingB. eating, exercising or watching TVC. exercising, housework or watching TVD. exercising, commuting or watching TV18. What does the underlined phrase selective memory in the third paragraph mean?A. Moms often tend to remember only the happy moments with their children.B. Moms often tend to remember only the hours they spent taking care of their children.C. Experts tend to remember only the happy moments the moms spend with their children.D. Experts tend to remember only the hours the moms spend with their children.19. According to Karen Rei vich, how do the moms’ moments of intense joy compare with their daily frustrations?A. Those moments make them feel more excited.B. Those moments make them feel more relaxed.C. Those moments can overcome their daily frustrations.D. Those moments can do nothing about their daily frustrations.20. From the last sentence of the passage we can infer that__________.A. Moms have only the smiley feeling about childcare.B. Moms feel frustrated at taking care of their children.C. Moms enjoy doing housework as a part of their childcare.D. Moms regard childcare as a meaningful part of their lives.Passage TwoDo you go to bed without brushing your teeth? You may think that not brushing is not a big deal. But caring for your mouth can prevent serious (and even embarrassing) problems.Cavities happen to just about everyone. A cavity is a diseased spot in the tooth. It all starts with a sticky film made up of bacteria. That film coats your teeth and gums. The bacteria eat sugars from things you eat and drink. That produces acids. Then, the acids eat away at your teeth’s hard outer coating, called enamel. If you don’t brush regularly to remove the film, or if you keep missing a spot, those acids keep eating away the teeth’s enam el. That is how you get a cavity. "The larger it gets, the closer it gets to the nerve, increasing the chance of severe pain," says Lynn Ramer, president of the AmericanDentists’ Association.A cavity will never just go away by itself. It will only get worse. "Left untreated, 100 percent of the time a cavity will spread," says Dr. William Berlocher, a dentist who is also president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. If a cavity is caught early enough, your dentist will be able to fix your tooth. The area of the tooth where the cavity was will be replaced with a special material called a filling. Some fillings are made of a metal blend containing silver. Other fillings are a tooth-colored mix of glass and a strong material called resin. If you ignore a cavity, it will spread. It can go into the tooth’s root. At that point, the dentist will have to do a root canal. In that procedure, the dentist removes the tooth’s nerve.21. According to the second paragraph, what is a cavity?A. a diseased spot in the toothB. a film of acids coating the teethC. a sticky film made up of bacteriaD. a hard outer coating covering the teeth22. What would happen if you do not brush regularly?A. The film coating your teeth would be removed.B. There would be less diseased spots in your teeth.C. The film coating your teeth would be less sticky.D. The acids would keep eating away your teeth’s hard outer coating.23. If a cavity reaches the tooth’s root, how would a dentist tr eat it?A. Replace the cavity with a fillingB. Replace the tooth’s enamelC. Remove the tooth’s nerveD. Pull out the tooth24. According to the fifth paragraph, what are some fillings made of?A. a mix of silver and resinB. a metal blend containing glassC. a metal blend containing copperD. a mix of glass and resin25. The main purpose of the passage is to __________.A. explain the formation and treatment of cavityB. emphasize the importance of brushing teethC. discuss the proper ways of brushing teethD. describe how a dentist treats a cavityPassage ThreeSmall talk is like having loose change in your pocket. Like quarters for a pay phone, loose change comes in handywhen you least expect it. But when it comes to small talk, you must know when to spend it or save it.All small talk is not the same. With some people, you walk away having killed a few moments. Withothers, you feel a connection and want to get to know them better. The difference is the effort one or both of you made at making a connection. It helps to call the person by name, mention things you have in common (mutual acquaintances, places you’ve been, experiences you’ve shared, career or personal goals), show interest in that person’s views or hobbies, and match the other person’s speaking style, voice, emotion and body language as you talk.People feel being related to others who like them, appreciate them, enjoy the same things they do and are helpful to them. Time and attention make connections that last. When you’re considering small talk, be sensitive to the other person’s mood and circumstances. When your airplane seatmate is obviously preoccupied, leave him or her alone. Neither would you approach someone when the person is dashing down a hallway to a meeting. On other occasions, small talk is inappropriate because of the person involved. If the CEO has unexpectedly called you in for "a little chat," this is not the time to take the lead. Let him or her dictate the topic and pace. The same is true with customers. Develop a sixth sense about those who appreciate small talk and those who don’t.26. What is the meaning of the underlined phrase comes in handy in the first paragraph?A. becomes very usefulB. becomes very specialC. becomes very importantD. becomes very inconvenient27. According to the second paragraph, how can you make a connection with others?A. mention your unique experiencesB. describe others’ dressing stylesC. talk about others’ ho bbiesD. discuss others’ names28. If you want to make others’ feel related to you, you may need to__________.A. spend time chatting with themB. show how excellent you areC. give presents to themD. be helpful to them29. According to the fourth paragraph, on what occasion should you avoid making small talk with others?A. when others are strolling on the streetB. when your airplane seatmate asks you for a favorC. when your airplane seatmate is absorbed in thoughtD. when others are walking down the hallway after a meeting30. According to the last paragraph, what should you do when your CEO has unexpectedly called you in for “a little chat”?A. let the CEO dictate the topic and paceB. talk about the difficulties in your workC. take the lead to make small talkD. decide on the topic of talkPassage FourA biological clock is what tells plants, animals, and other organisms how to organize their time. This ‘clock’ helps plants and animals change their routine when they move to places with different climates and environments. Most biological clocks are based on the movement of the sun and follow a twenty-four hour cycle called a circadian rhythm. Some animals sleep only at night, making them diurnal. Animals that sleep during daytime are nocturnal. Flowers are diurnal because they close their petals at night but they open again in the morning. Bats sleep in the daytime so they are nocturnal. Some biological clocks also follow an annual cycle, especially in animals that have annual migrations. Animals that have annual cycles do different things at different times of year. Their actions are determined by the seasons.Different animals can live in the same area when their biological clocks make them look for food at different times of day. This process also keeps them out of each other’s way. Biological clocks help plants and animals prepare for changes in the seasons. Animals need to know what time of year to reproduce so their offspring will be born when the conditions for survival are good.Human beings’ sleep cycle is a circadian rhythm, a system based on the twenty-four hour day. In the circadian rhythm most humans sleep at night. When people travel to different time zones their biological clocks have to adjust. In humans, the biological clock is in a group of cells called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN.) The SCN is located near the bottom middle part of the brain.Scientists are continuing to research the biological clock and circadian rhythms. Scientists discovered the first circadian gene in a mammal (a mouse) in 1997. It is only a matter of time before your own biological clock will tell YOU the time!31. Which of the following type of animal or plant is nocturnal?A. human beingsB. flowersC. batsD. cows32. What is a circadian rhythm?A. a twenty-four hour cycle of most biological blocksB. the closure and opening of the petals of flowersC. a cycle of some animals’ annual migrationD. the movement rhythm of the sun33. According to the third paragraph, why can different animals live in the same area peacefully?A. Because they look for different types of food.B. Because their conditions for survival are good.C. Because they do different things at different times of year.D. Because their biological clocks keep them out of each other’s way.34.
