William Butler Yeats, a most famous Irish writer, was born in

Dublin on June 13, 1865. His childhood lacked the harmony(和睦) that

was typical of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying

that he remembered “little of childhood but its pain”. In fact, he

inherited(继承) excellent taste in art from his family-----both his father

and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama(戏剧) and poetry.

Yeats had strong faith in the coming of new artistic movements. He

set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the

late 1890s. His early theatrical experiments, however, were not

received favorably at the begin ning. He didn’t lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.

Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats’ poems attract much

admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time

and aging. Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms, he brought modern sensibility to them. As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.

He had not enjoyed a major public lift since winning the Nobel Prize

in 1923. Yet, he continued writing almost to the end of his life. Had

Yeats stopped writing at age 40, he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet

who produces his greatest works between the ages of 50 and 75. After Yeats’ death in 1939, W.H. Auden wrote, among others, the following lines:

Earth, receive an honored guest:

William Yeats is laid to rest.

Let the Irish vessel(船) lie.

Emptied of his poetry.

56. Which of the following can describe Yeats’ family?

A. It filled Yeats’ childhood with laughter.

B. It was shocked by Yeats’ choice.

C. It was a typically wealthy family.

D. It had an artistic

atmosphere.

57. According to the passage, what do we know about Yeats’ life?

A. Yeats founded the first Irish theatre.

B. Yeats stuck to modern forms in his poetry.

C. Yeats began to produce his best works from the 1910s.

D. Yeats was not favored by the public until the 1923 Nobel Prize.

58. What kind of feeling is expressed in W. H. Auden’s lines?

A. Envy

B. Sympathy

C. Emptiness

D. Admiration

59. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Yeats’ literary achievements.

B. Y eats’ historical influence.

C. Yeats’ artistic ambition(雄心).

D. Yeats’ national honor.

Earthquakes strike suddenly at any time of the day or night, but there’s no way to tell them. If an earthquake happens, it may cause many deaths and injuries and great damage. Decide how and where your family will get together if separated. Choose an out-of-state friend or relative that the family members can call after the quake to report where they are and how they are. Know the safe place in each room: under the strong tables, desks, or against inside walls. Keep enough food, water and other things, including a flashlight, a radio, medicines and clothing.

During the earthquake, you should keep a clear head and never be too nervous to know what to do. Protect your head and neck with your arms. If possible, take a book, a pillow or any other things to protect yourself from falling glass and ruins. If you are indoors, you must

immediately lie under any strong furniture. If outdoors, move to an open area away from trees, buildings, walls and power poles. If you are in a narrow valley, move to the centre of it and look out for falling

stones. If you are in a car, move to the side of the road and stop the car.

Do not stop near buildings, power lines or under bridges. Stay in your car until the shaking stops.

60. After the earthquake, you should make sure of ________.

A. the phone number of your friend who lives near your home.

B. the place where you can find your family.

C. the time when a dangerous earthquake may happen.

D. the money with which you can buy food, water and other things.

61. The writer wants to tell us_______.

A. why an earthquake is very dangerous.

B. when earthquake usually happen.

C. what to do during and after an earthquake.

D. where to stay during an earthquake.

62. After an earthquake, you should _________.

A. move an injured person quickly.

B. use the telephone

immediately

C. turn on the TV to get the news reports.

D. leave a massage in your home before you leave.

A group of graduates, successful in their careers, got together to

visit their old university professor.Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Before offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and a variety of cups —porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking and cheap, some extremely expensive — telling them to help themselves to the coffee. When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. The fact is that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously(有意识地)went for the best cups...And then you began eyeing each other's cups.

Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not change the quality of life we live.Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us."

God makes the coffee, not the cups.Enjoy your coffee!

"The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything."

Live simply.Love generously.Care deeply.Speak kindly.Leave the rest to God.

63.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.the ordinary-looking cup B.the nice-looking cup

C.the coffee of good quality D.the coffee of poor quality 64.Why did the professor offer his students coffee with varieties of cups?

A.To give his students many more choices.

B.To teach his students how to enjoy coffee.

C.To show the students his collection of cups.

D.To tell his students the right attitude to life

65.According to the professor, the happiest people are the ones who _____.

A.get the best type of coffee cups B.make the best of what they have

C.have a wide range of coffee cups

D.care about social status and wealth

66.The best title for the passage would be _____.

A.God's Coffee B.The Pressure of Life

C.The Happiest People D.Professor's Coffee Cups

D

When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a small farm and it was very difficult for us to know what was happening outside the small farm, especially in the winter when we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its own problems, too.

One big disadvantage is money. It costs so much to go out, not to mention basic needs like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from a disease that makes breathing very difficult and the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside as I like, even in the summer. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have

a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by

bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.

Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever you taste in culture or entertainment. Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety (多样性) of goods is very surprising—and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.

Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.

67. What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child?

A. Staying on the farm.

B. Moving to the countryside.

C. Leaving home for the city.

D. Running away from the school.

68. What can we learn from the text?

A. The writer is very old now.

B. The writer is in good

health.

C. The write prefers driving a car.

D. The writer lives in the city

now.

69. In the passage, the writer tries to __________.

A. express his opinions about way of life

B. describe his life in the countryside

C. show an interest in the outside world

D. persuade the reader to live in the city

70. How is the passage mainly developed?

A. By questioning.

B. By comparing.

C. By listing examples.

D. By giving explanations.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳的选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Does this situation seem familiar to you? Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading

comprehension is no problem, and you are speaking quite fluently. 71 First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening is probably the most difficult job for almost all learners of English as a foreign

language. The most important thing is to listen as often as

possible. 72 The Internet is really a useful tool for English students.

You can download The RealPlayer from https://www.doczj.com/doc/0b5661519.html,. The RealPlayer allows you to use the Internet like a radio station.

Once you have begun to listen on a regular basis, you might still be frustrated by limited understanding. 73

Here is some of the advice I give to my students:

Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything.

Stay relaxed when you do not understand, and try listening to the

material for more times.

Do not translate everything into your native language.

74 Don’t concentrate on details before you have understood the

main ideas.

Listen to something you enjoy.

I remember the problems I had in understanding spoken German

when I first went to Germany. In the beginning, when I didn’t

understand a word. I insisted on translating it in my mind. This method usually resulted in confusion. 75 Firstly, translating creates a barrier between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people repeat themselves constantly. By remaining calm, I noticed that even if I

didn’t pay much attention, I could usually understand what the speaker had said.

A. But you can’t follow a native English speaker at all!

B. What should you do?

C. But listening is a problem for most of the beginners!

D. However, after several weeks, I got used to the new environment in

Germany.

E. So, what you need to do is to find listening resources.

F. Then, after the first six months, I discovered two extremely

important facts.

G. Listen for the general idea of the conversation.
