I stood in a noisy group of sixth grade students, waiting for the answer to our burning question: What type of crazy tie would Mr. Miller be wearing today?

Our teacher walked around the comer with a GREEN ELEPHANT TIE that matched his large elephant coffee cup! Oh, the satisfaction in our young hearts—a green elephant tie!

With his glasses at the ti p of his nose, he greeted us cheerfully, “Good morning, folks!” He was strange and unique and he brightened every day for us. He was the most dynamic teacher I had ever met.

I loved music, so I remember how excited I was when he said he was going to give us music lessons. But when he turned on the music, my classmates and I slowly turned our heads toward the sound of… Peter, Paul and Mary singing “If I Had a Hammer”.

Snickers(窃笑)filled the room. If it wasn’t rap or hip hop, we didn’t recognize it. What were these people singing about? My classmates were not into this at all. But for me, a girl of 12, it was a discovery. An awakening.

Twenty years passed and now there are forty little eyes staring at my wild musical-note shirts as I greet them with a joyful, “Good morning, class!” I wonder if my students wait and wonder what crazy music clothes I will wear each day.

I glance at my 2015 Teacher of the Year Award, which I received for being a dynamic teacher And I smile to myself, wondering which child in front of me will carry this on-as I’ve carried on the legacy(遗产)of Mr. Miller.

One teacher, who dared to be different and open new worlds to kids like me, threw the significant stone into the pond of my life. I pray the ripples(涟漪)never end.

ABC News: Parents who want to pick up their kids at school in one New Jersey district now can submit to iris(虹膜) scans, as the technology that helps keep our nation’s airports and hotels safe begins to make its way further into American lives.

The Freehold Borough School District launched this high-tech security system on Monday with funding from the Department of Justice as part of a study on the system’s effectiveness.

As many as four adults can be authorized to pick up each child in the district, but in order to be authorized to come into school, they will be asked to register with the district’s iris recognition security and visitor management system. At this point, the New Jersey program is not a must.

If someone tries to slip in behind an authorized person, the system causes an alarm and red flashing lights in the front office. The entire process takes just seconds.

This kind of technology is already at work in airports around the country like Orlando International Airport, where the program has been in operation since July. It has 12,000 subscribers who pay $79.95 for the convenience of submitting to iris scans rather than going through lengthy security checks.

An iris scan is said to be more accurate than a fingerprint because it records 240 unique details—far more than the seven to twenty-four details that are analyzed in fingerprints. The chances of being misidentified by an iris scan are about one in 1.2 million and just one in 1.44 trillion if you scan both eyes.

Phil Meara, the Freehold District official, said that although it was expensive, the program would help schools across the country move into a new frontier in child protection. “This is all part of a larger emphasis, here in New Jersey, on school safety,” he said. “We chose this school because we were looking for a typical slightly urban school to launch the system.”

Meara applied for a $369,000 grant on behalf of the school district and had the eye scanners installed in two grammar schools and one middle school. So far, 300 of the nearly 1,500 individuals available to pick up a student from school have registered for the eye scan system.

43. Why does the Freehold Borough School District adopt the eye scan security system?

A. To ensure the school safety and efficiency of picking up children.

B. To encourage more students to register in New Jersey urban schools.

C. To test the effectiveness of school security and management system.

D. To collect the information of the children and their beloved parents.

44. What’s the advantage of the eye san system over fingerprints?

A. Having many more subscribers through the country.

B. Authorizing the adults to pick up children more flexibly.

C. Attracting parents in a larger proportion to register for it.

D. Making almost no mistakes in identifying the authorized.

45. How does Phil Meara help to protect the safety of children?

A. By asking the Department of Justice to fund this program.

B. By applying for grant to install eye scanners in schools.

C. By asking people to register with the security system.

D. By turning to Orlando International Airport for help.

46. What is the best title of this passage?

A. Iris Scanners are Invented in the Country.

B. Security Management Needs Improving.

C. High Technology Comes to Schools

D. Parents Favor the Eye Scan System.

Architect Vincent Callebaut recently introduced a plan for high-flying teams of self-sufficient aircraft that are one part of airship cities and one part hydrogen-producing floating farms. Called Hydrogenase (氧化酶), the aircraft are 100% emission-free and are capable of creating hydrogen without consuming land needed for crops or forests.

We’ve seen futuristic airships before, but never one that doubles as a hydrogen-producing flying farm! Designed for the South China Sea near Hainan, Callebaut’s hydrogenase airships are completely self-sufficient and contain a specialized breed of seaweed that absorbs sunlight and CO2 to produce hydrogen.

According to the architects, "The output obtained with micro-seaweed is superior to that of using farming to produce biofuel. 330 grams of seaweed produce 1, 000 liters of hydrogen per day, while for example soybeans produce roughly 1,000 liters of oil per hectare (公顷).A hectare of seaweed could thus produce much more biofuel than a hectare of soybeans."

In addition to providing a clean source of renewable energy, Hydrogenase airships offer an eco-friendly means of transportation. Although certainly slower than ordinary planes, the airships are nearly silent and require a very little basic structure to take off and land. The architects also suggest that the airships could provide disaster relief to remote areas, and be used as flying hospitals and aid centers. Each hydrogenase airship is covered with flexible photovoltaic cells(光电池). The interior features room for housing, offices, scientific laboratories, and entertainment, and a series of bioremediating (生物治理)vegetable gardens provide a source of food while recycling waste. Hydrogenase is certainly for futuristic concept, but it does use a set of technologies being developed today — and perhaps one day we will see fantastic ideas like this take flight.

47. What do we know about Vincent Callebaut?

A. He is working on a floating farm.

B. He compares many different airships.

C. He has developed a self-sufficient aircraft.

D. He has come up with a plan for new aircraft.

48. Why do the airships contain seaweed?

A. To produce oxygen.

B. To create hydrogen.

C. To absorb hydrogen.

D. To absorb harmful gases.

49. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A. Farms with seaweed are more efficient at producing biofuel.

B. Farms with seaweed will surely replace traditional farmlands.

C. Farms with seaweed produce more food.

D. Soybeans can’t be planted on the airships.

50. What does the text mainly talk about?

A. The advantages of the airships.

B. The disadvantages of the airships.

C. The airships renewable energy source.

D. When and where the airships can be used.

A Letter from Earth

Dear Homo Sapiens,

As you mark off another "Earth Day" in your calendars, 56 that for at least 24hours I remained in your thoughts, I wanted to remind you that I am sick. I'm frightened that 57 I can't soon receive the appropriate medicine and care I need, my illness will become terminal 58 all cures.

Like a proud parent, I have watched in wonder as you 64 in abilities and intellect. You have travelled to outer space, developed medical cures for the most troublesome illnesses, built great cities and 65 technology…

But at what cost?

Did I do something to 66 you? Was there a point in our mutual (相互的) history where you 67 that we were no longer equals? Am I only now a commodity to you?Why would you pollute my rivers and oceans? Why would you 68 poisonous smokes into our environment, causing me to 69 ? Surely you would not do this intentionally; it would make no 70 .

I don't wish to believe that you have become increasingly 71 . I would like to think that you have 72 lost your way, 73 other species have before you.
