It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. If we didn’t see some rain soon we would lose everything.

I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year-old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He was obviously walking with a great effort. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house.

Moments later, however, he was once again walking toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I went out of the house and followed him on his journey.

He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill the water he held in them. Branches and thorns (荆棘) slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site.

Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water, lift its head with great effort to drink the water cupped in my beautiful boy's hand.

I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart working so hard to save a life. As my tears began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, Himself, was weeping with pride.

Riding a London subway, a person from other countries will notice one major difference: in London, people do not look at each other. In fact, eye contact is avoided at all times. That’s not rudeness― people are just too busy to bother looking.

Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they’re ce rtainly not using the time for a moment of quiet thinking.Nor are they reading a book.New technology has replaced quiet habits.Today the only acceptable form of book on the London underground is an e-book.Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters(使用月票上下班者). Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, over 40, 000 ― yes, 40, 000 “apps” have been designed.Commuters love them because they are the perfect time - fillers. One “app”, called iShoot, is a game that features tanks.Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination. iSteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the “steam” on your phone screen.

For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be the distraction (消遣) of choice. It’s not just teenagers who “plug in” to their music- iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages.

And if games, e-books and music aren’t enough to keep you occupied, then perhaps y ou would prefer a film? The development of palm DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV shows or films on the way to work. With all these distractions, it’s amazing that people still remember to get off the train.

Fourteen – year – old Richie Hawley had spent five years studying violin at the Community School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles when he took part in a violin contest. Ninety two young people were invited to the contest and Hawley came out first. The contest could have been the perfect setup for fear, worrying about mistakes, and trying to impress the judges. But Hawley says he did pretty well in staying calm. “I couldn’t be thinking about how many mistakes I’d make— it would distract me from playing,” he says. “I didn’t even remember trying to impress people while I played. It’s

a lmost as if they weren’t there. I just wanted to make music.”

Hawley is a winner. But he didn’t become a winner by concentrating on winning. He did

it by concentrating on playing well.

“The important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part,” said the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin. “The important thing in life is not the triumph (胜利) but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”

A characteristic of high performers is their intense, pleasurable concentration on work, rather than on their competitors or future glory or money, says Dr. Charles Garfield, who

has studied 1,500 achievers in business, science, sports, the arts, and professions. “They are interested in winning, but they are most interested in self - development, testing their limits.”

One of the most surprising things about top performers is how many losses they’ve had and how much they’ve learned from each. “Not one of the 1,500 I studied defined losing as failing,” Garfield says. “They kept calling their losses ‘setbacks’.”

A healthy attitude toward setbacks is essential to winning, experts agree.

“The worst thing you can do if you’ve had a setback is to let yourself get stuck in a long depression. You should analyze carefully what went wrong, identify specific things you did right and give yourself credit for them.”Garfield believes that most pe ople don’t give themselves enough praise. He even suggests keeping a diary of all the positive things you’ve done on the way to a goal.

68. Hawley won the contest because ________.

A. he put all his mind to his performance

B. he cared much about the judges’ feelings

C. he tried his best to avoid making mistakes

D. he paid close attention to the people around

69. According to the passage, successful people concentrate on ________.

A. challenging their own limits

B. learning from others

C. defeating their opponents

D. avoiding setbacks

70. The passage tells us that “praise” in times of trouble ________.

A. helps people deal with their disappointment

B. makes people forget their setbacks

C. makes people regret about their past

D. helps people analyze what went wrong

Most fitness advice is aimed at a general audience. But if you’re an older adult, the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) has some tips for seniors to get started and keep them at the top of their game.

72 Talk with your doctor about getting permission to begin a fitness program and making any changes to suit your situation.

73 Before starting, pick a program you’ll enjoy, so you’ll do it regularly. Check out the facility and the staff. Is the place friendly? Can you change clothes comfortably? Are facilities easily accessed?

Determine your participation style. Choose what’s best for you — a class or going solo? Morning or night hours? 74

Start slowly. Most people are overeager and sometimes overdo it. Record a baseline of your regular activities and determine a reasonable plan.

Make a date. Find a friend to exercise with you and keep you motivated.

Set specific short-term and long-term goals. Plan for activity in your day and make it a priority.

Remind yourself what your goals are. If it hurts, don’t do it. 75 And once you’ve reached your goal, treat yourself for the good job you’ve done, so it will encourage you to continue.

A.Make a list.

B.Exercise Tips for Seniors to Start a Healthy Game

C.Know your choice.

D.Learn to work around pain, not through it.

书面表达(满分25分)

Dear Zhang Ping,

I’m glad to hear that you want to study abroad in your letter. Here is what I know about

what kind of Chinese students are favored in foreign colleges and universities.

As far as I know, the language ability is essential, which helps you communicate with

others and makes it easier for you to understand the courses. Besides, you should have the

ability to adapt quickly to the new environment. What’s more, your interest is valued as

well, for it has a lot to do with success. Last but not the least, those who are willing

to shoulder social responsibility are especially respected and welcomed.

This is some of my advice, and I hope it can be of some help to you. May you succeed!

Best wishes and good luck.

Yours

Mike

Text 1

M: Did you have a good time flying kites in the park with your friends yesterday?

W: Yes. But it rained at noon, so in the afternoon we went to the library.

Text 2

M: Excuse me. How does this little machine work?

W: You speak into the microphone, and it translates your words into ten languages.

M: Wow! The price is......?

W: It’s on sale. Only $ 300.

Text 3

W: The book you want is checked out. It is in high demand at the moment.

M: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Can you keep it for me when it gets returned?

Text 4

W: Good morning, sir! Excuse me for being late. I was caught in a traffic jam on my way

to school.

M: OK. I hope you will leave your house earlier tomorrow morning. Take your seat, please.

Text 5

M: Have a nice weekend. Do you have anything exciting planned?

W: Not really. I was thinking of renting a boat in the Water Park with my parents. But the

national English competition is coming up, so I will probably have to stay at home and prepare

for it.

Text 6

W: David, I feel very nervous about our presentation tonight.

M: Me, too. Everybody is. It’s very common.

W: How can I relax?

M: I think the best way is to practice before the presentation. If you are confident, you

will feel much more relaxed.

W: That’s a good idea. It’s only 2:00. We have three hours to go. Let’s practice some

more.

M: OK. Let’s do it.

Text 7

W: Now tell me, what seems to be the problem?

M: Well, I want to lose some weight. Every time I look at myself in the mirror, I feel terrible.

W: You have to take care of yourself. Do you exercise? I mean, do you walk or run or …

M: Me? Walk? Run? I go everywhere on my motorcycle.

W: You know, David, you should exercise every day.

M: I hate exercise. Isn’t there an easy way to lose a few pounds? Maybe you can give me some pills.

W: They aren’t good for your health. Do you eat a lot of sugar?

M: Oh yeah! I love candy.

W: Well, candy makes you fat. What about pizza, hamburgers, French fries, ice cream …M: They’re my favorites.

W: Then you’d better change your diet. You ought to eat salads, fruits, vegetables …M: Thank you all the same, but I think I’ll stay the way I am.

Text 8

W: Hello, Bill. I’m calling to apologize about Saturday. My parents had visitors, so I had to help my mother.

M: That’s quite all right. I understand.

W: And how was the outing?

M: Well, you didn’t miss anything. Everything just went wrong. First, we ran out of gas on the way there. We had to walk miles to a gas station. Then when we got to our favorite picnic spot in the mountains, it was so crowded we decided to look for another place. W: Aw, that’s a shame. Did you find another place?

M: Yes, we found a beautiful quiet spot on a hill, but there were so many mosquitoes and ants … and suddenly the weather changed and it started to rain.

W: So what did you do?

M: We came back home. When we got here, the rain stopped and it was clear, so we had our picnic in the backyard without ants, mosquitoes, and people.

Text 9

M: Have you thought of moving at all, Sarah?

W: We’ve thought about it, but my husband and I can't afford it right now.

M: Buying a house can be expensive, but there are ways to find cheaper houses.

W: Like what?

M: Well. You can buy a house far away from the city center. You would definitely save money doing it that way.

W: That's a good idea.

M: Sure, my sister-in-law and her husband just bought a house that way. They're pretty satisfied with it.

W: Is the house pretty run-down?

M: Not at all. The woman, who owned it, took good care of it. But when she died, she had no family left and no will, so the government had to sell it for her.

W: Was it a very old house?

M: It was about 75 years o1d. There were a few repairs that needed doing, but it didn't take a lot of money or time.

W: Is it in a good location?

M: The area can be a bit rough in the evening, but the neighbors watch out for each other, so it’s OK.

Text 10

Hi, I’d like to talk to the manager about something. I have to travel every day from Souk Road to the airport. Only the Number 16 bus travels along this road.

Your timetable is there. It shows that there are buses from Souk Road to the airport every ten minutes. If this is so, why do I have to wait half an hour for a bus nearly every day?

The rules say that if there are empty seats on a bus, they just stop at every stop where people are waiting. Why is it, therefore, that half-empty buses go straight past me when I am standing at the bus stop?

The rules say that no bus may carry more than 40 seated passengers and 20 standing passengers. Yesterday I was the first to get off the bus when I reached the airport. I counted the other passengers as they got off. They were 129 of them.

Clearly printed on the back of every bus is a sign that says “Highest speed: 50 mph.”The distance from Souk Road to Kai Tak is 12 miles. One Saturday morning a Number 16 bus traveled this distance in 10 minutes. At times, it must have done at least 80 or 90 mph.

It is obvious that our bus companies have no respect for the rules or consideration for the passengers. Can nothing be done about this?
