Ⅴ. Reading Comprehension

Section A (Reading in Depth) (l’*10=10)

Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once. Questions 1 to 10 are based on the following passage.

While many private schools are focusing more on values, public schools are moving toward testing standards. The national government demands 1 success and tests are taken as a key measurement for a school’s performance. Schools with low test scores face 2 such as a reduction in money to run their schools. And, even individual teachers are being graded on how they’re preparing their students for these tests.

“We have 3 too much on teaching the kids how to take these tests,”commented one elementary school teacher. “We should be providing a more 4 curriculum to these kids. We should be 5 leadership and curiosity. Unfortunately, there is never time.”

One school principal remarked, “It’s true that it would be 6 to our kids if they were getting better scores on the subjects being tested. The trouble

is that in poorer areas of the city like ours, kids start school less 7 to perform well. We have many 8 to overcome before we can teach them basic subjects. All schools are not 9 ,so theyshouldn’t be tested that way.”

“The way is to _ 10 performance in schools that are not providing their students with tools for success,” said one government official. He admits, however, that he is having a hard time convincing faculty and teachers this plan

Section B (2’*10=20)

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are

four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best

choice.

Passage One

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage.

Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something that has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand what he wants to teach them, and what he wants them to learn from him.

What visual artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experience into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist.

Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and at rest; their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects.

If one painter chooses to paint a decaying leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something --- all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.

11.An artist hopes that the public will

A)understand him and learn from him

B)notice only shapes and colors in his work

C)teach him something

D)believe what he says in his work

12.It is hard to explain what a painter is saying, because he/she

A)does not express himself/herself well

B)uses unusual words and phrases

C)uses shapes and colors instead of words

D)does not say anything clearly

13.The writer points out that contemporary artists might say their choices of subject

A)carry a message to the public

B)only provide interesting patterns

C)have no pattern or form

D)teach the public important truths

14.The writer also points out that contemporary art contains

A)nothing but meaningless patterns

B)uninteresting aspects of the world

C)subjects chosen partly for their meanings

D)completely meaningless subjects

15.What is implied in this passage?

A) A painting is more easily understood than a symphony.

B)Art is merely the arranging of shape and color.

C)Every artist tries to say something to the public.

D)One must look beyond shape and color to find what the artist is saying. Passage Two

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.

The case for college has been accepted without question for more than a generation. All high school graduates ought to go, says conventional wisdom and statistical evidence, because college will help them earn more money, become “better”people, and learn to be more responsible citizens than those who don't go.

But college has never been able to work its magic for everyone. And now that close to half our high school graduates are attending, those who don't fit the pattern are becoming more numerous, and more obvious. College graduates are selling shoes and driving taxi; college students interfere with each other T s experiments and write false letters of recommendation in the intense competition for admission to graduate school. Others find no stimulation in their studies, and drop out — often encouraged by college administrators.

Some observers say that the fault is with the young people themselves —they are spoiled and they are expecting too much. But that’s a condemnation of the students as a whole, and doesn’t explain all campus unhappiness. Others blame the state of the world, and they are partly right. We have been told that young

people have to go to college because our economy can f t absorb an army of untrained eighteen-year-olds. But disappointed graduates are learning that it can no longer absorb an army of trained twenty-year-olds, either.

Some adventuresome educators and campus watchers have openly begun to suggest that college may not be the best, the proper, the only place for every young person after the completion of high school. Perhaps college doesn't make people intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, or quick to learn things.

16.The passage suggests that ___ .

A)people used to question the value of education

B)people used to have full confidence in higher education

C)all high school graduates went to college

D)very few high school graduates chose to go to college

17.In the second paragraph, "those who don't fit the pattern”refers to

.

A)high school graduates who are not suitable for college education

B)college graduates who are selling shoes and driving taxi

C)college students who aren’t better for their higher education

D)high school graduates who failed to be admitted to college

18.The drop-out rate of college students seems to go up because ?

A)young people are disappointed with the conventional way of teaching

B)many young people are required to join the army

C)young people have little motivation in pursuing a higher education

D)young people don f t like the intense competition for admission to graduate school

19.According to the passage, the problem of college education partly arises from the fact that ____ .

A)society can't provide enough jobs for properly trained college students

B)high school graduates do not fit the pattern of college education

C)too many students have to earn their own living

D)college administrators encourage students to work hard

20.What can we infer from the passage?

A)Cheating in school is on the rise.

B)Some people concerned challenge the traditional view that college is the best place for high school graduates.

C)College administrators should be responsible for the increasing number of drop-out.

D)College education is not the first choice for intelligent people.
