第二节语法填空(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)

阅读下列短文,按照句子结构的语法性和上下文连贯的要求,填入适当的词或使用括号中词语的正确形式填空。

Control, fear, doubt and anger, these are the deadly killers of the human race. We hurt 16 by feeling these emotions and we hurt others by directing these emotions at them.

17 what would happen if we could selflessly and 18 (gentle) direct unconditional love to whomever we meet? We‘d certainly help ourselves. Why do we let other people hurt us? Because we put expectations on them, expectations we ourselves to 19 (fail) to live up to with others. Look at children. We still love our children when they disappoint us. Why not our workmates, teachers, friends and most of all partners? It‘s because we put conditions on 20 we give out.

Many of us bought a present or did a job expecting something 21 return. But if you want to help someone just because you want to, no other reason than just because you want to—that is showing love. Y ou can help 22 old lady with her groceries and it feels good so why not with everything else? When you learn that 23 (give) love without expectation is the 24 (pure) of all faith, then and only then, you will be on the road 25 really knowing yourself. And knowing yourself can really help you conquer ―control, fear, doubt and anger.‖

第一节阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

We‘ve all heard of the popular saying, the grass is always greener on the other side, and this saying couldn‘t be truer when we are considering places to live. Many who live in rural areas miles away from city conveniences sometimes long for amenities (优雅舒适) they don‘t have

easy access to, and those who deal with the hustle and bustle (忙忙碌碌) of city life long for the peace and quiet of country life.

Is the grass really greener on the other side, or do people only look at the positive aspects of living elsewhere? It‘s difficult to make that decision when you‘ve never experienced life on the other side, but I‘ve lived in the city and in the country, and although a perfect place on this planet doesn‘t exist, I now appreciate city life more than ever before.

I lived in a city as a child. It wasn‘t as busy as Chicago, but all of the conveniences of city life were within easy reach, and when visiting my cousin who lived in the country, I was very envious. It was fun to play in the pinewoods, the property was vast, the air was fresh, and country life was something I longed for. The grass literally was greener on the other side. At that time I vowed to live in the country when I grew up so that I would eventually get a good dose of what it was like to live in the country, away from amenities of city life and luxuries I had taken for granted as child. This was the dream of a child, but not of an adult with responsibilities and realistic prospects.

A. in a green city

B. a busy life

C. in an ordinary city

27. The saying ―The grass is always greener on the other side‖ means that .

A. whatever you have in your life, what someone else has always looks better

D. many people are longing for a better life or a better job

28. The main idea of the last paragraph is .

A. why I hated living in a city as a child

B. how I longed for country life as a child

C. that a responsible man should not live in the country

D. that it is convenient to live in a city

29. What may the writer talk about mostly in the paragraphs following the last?

A. The advantages of country life.

C. The advantages of city life.

D. The disadvantages of city life.

Attractive fathers do not pass their looks on to their sons but they will hand their good looks down to their daughters, research shows.

In a study of family photographs, psychologists Professor David Perrett and Elisabeth Cornwell at the University of Colorado have found that while both father and mother can influence the attractiveness of their daughters, the couple's good looks do not necessarily contribute to the attractiveness of their son as an adult.

Handsome men with masculine (男子气概的) looks are likely to pass on masculine features, but not facial attractiveness. The theory suggests it is not unusual for attractive parents to produce a beautiful daughter while failing to pass on the same good looks to a son. While many celebrity mothers produce stunning (极为出色的) daughters —such as Goldie Hawn and her daughter Kate Hudson or Jerry Hall and her daughter Georgia —the same is not necessarily true of celebrity fathers. Sean Stewart, the son of Rod Stewart and his first wife Alana, would probably be judged less attractive than his model sister Kimberly.

―We can‘t see a strong relationship between the parents‘attractiveness and the sons. If the parents are supermodels, the chances are the daughters will be lookers,‖ Perrett said. Prof Perrett said it has previously been suggested that a woman could increase her own reproductive success by choosing a ―sexy‖ mate whose genes would be passed on to male descendants (后代).

But a new study, published in the current edition of the journal Animal Behaviour, disagrees with the theory. The researchers said: ―When we looked at women‘s faces, we found clear evidence that attractiveness passed from both father and mother to daughter. For the male line, we find that facial masculinity matched the rule ?like father, like son‘. But we did not find any evidence that facial attractiveness is passed from father to son.‖

31. According to Paragraph 2, Professor Perrett believes that .

A. only attractive fathers can have beautiful daughters

B. only attractive mothers can have beautiful daughters

C. both attractive parents can have beautiful daughters

D. both attractive parents can have handsome sons

32. From Paragraph 5 we learn that .

A. neither Goldie Hawn nor Jerry Hall is a famous mother

B. neither Kate Hudson nor Georgia is beautiful

C. Sean Stewart is as attractive as his father

D. Kimberly is more attractive than Sean Stewart

33. The underlined word "lookers" in Paragraph 6 can be replaced by ―‖.

A. successful people

B. beautiful people

C. famous people

D. lucky people

34. Which of the following statements can be drawn from the last paragraph?

A. Masculine dads have masculine sons.

B. Sons usually behave the same way as their fathers.

C. Mothers have more influence on their children than fathers.

D. Daughters‘ characters are easily influenced by their parents.

35. What‘s the best title for this passage?

A. An Important Research on Human Genes

B. Famous Mothers Produce Beautiful Daughters

C. Parents‘Attractiveness Influences Their Children

D. Attractive Fathers do not Pass Their Looks on to Their Sons

Throughout the world, clothing has many uses. It is used to provide protection from the elements. It also is worn to prevent others from seeing specific parts of one‘s body. However, the parts of the body that must be covered vary widely throughout the world. Some clothing is worn to provide supernatural protection. Wearing a lucky shirt to take an exam is calling for supernatural assistance.

People in all cultures use clothing and other forms of bodily decoration to communicate status, intentions and other messages. In North America, we dress differently for business and various leisure activities. North American women usually are much more knowledgeable of and concerned with little difference in messages communicated by clothes than men. At times, this leads to silly mistakes of interpretation of female intentions on the part of men. Of course, clothing styles also are intended to communicate messages to members of the same gender(性别).

Long before we are near enough to talk to someone, their appearance tells their gender, age, economic class, and often even intentions. We begin to recognize the important cultural clues at an early age. The vocabulary of dress that we learn includes not only items of clothing but also hairstyles, jewelry, and other body decoration. In most cultures, however, the same style of dress communicates different messages depending on the age, gender, and physical appearance of the individual wearing it.

Putting on certain types of clothing can change your behavior and the behavior of others towards you. This can be the case with a doctor‘s white lab coat, or an army uniform. Most uniforms are clearly symbolic so that they can rapidly and unmistakably communicate status. For instance, the strange hairstyle and clothing of the English ―punks‖ are essential aspects of their uniforms.

There are many forms of body decoration other than clothes that are used around the world to send messages. These include body and hair paint, and even body deformation. When doctors put

braces on teeth, they are actually doing the same thing – deforming or reforming a part of the body to make it more attractive.

36. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

A. Clothing and Culture

B. Communication through Clothing

C. Clothing and Social Behavior

D. Ways of Sending Message

37. Some people wear lucky shirts to take an exam because they believe .

A. clothes have extraordinary power

B. clothes can hide their fear for the exam

C. shirts can make them more comfortable

D. shirts provide protection against bad weather

38. In North America, men sometimes misunderstand women‘s intention because .

A. men are more careless than women

B. women spend more time on their clothes

C. men care less about the different messages communicated by clothes

D. men and women have different views on clothing styles

39. From the passage, it can be inferred that .

A. messages communicated by clothes are the same in different cultures

B. words of dress are not enough to communicate different messages

C. dress is better than language in communicating messages

D. clothing plays an important role in social activities

40. According to the passage, the behavior of others towards you can be changed by

your .

A. age

B. dress

C. status

D. behavior

When The Grapes of Wrath (愤怒) was published on March 14, 1939, it created a national sensation (轰动) for its description of the destructive effects of the Great Depression (大萧条) of the 1930s. By the end of April, it was selling 2,500 copies a day —a remarkable number considering the hard economic times. In May, the novel was a number-one best-seller, selling at a rate of 10,000 copies a week. By the end of 1939, close to a half million copies had been sold.

John Steinbeck was shocked by the tremendous response to his novel. Almost overnight, he found himself involved in a great national debate over the migrant labor problem. Many people were shocked by the poverty and hopelessness of the story, and others denied that such

circumstances could happen in America. Even people who had never read a book before bought a copy of The Grapes of Wrath. At $2.75 per copy, it was affordable and quickly sold out.

However it was banned and burned in Buffalo, New Y ork; East Saint Louis, Illinois; and Kern County, California, where much of the novel is set. In fact, the novel remains one of the most frequently banned books in the United States. The book was criticized sharply in Congress by Representative Lyle Boren of Oklahoma, who called the novel‘s description of migrant living conditions a lie. Charges were made that ―obscenity‖(淫秽) had been included in the book in large part to sell more copies. Eventually, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt stepped in to praise the book and defend Steinbeck against his critics. In 1940, the novel won the Pulitzer Prize.

The popularity of the novel has endured. It is estimated that it has sold fifteen million copies since its publication. For almost sixty years, Steinbeck‘s novel has been a classic in American literature; it has been translated into several languages, including French, German, and Japanese. The Grapes of Wrath has also been a necessary part of the school curriculum in America since the end of World War II.

41. What does the underlined word ―tremendous‖ probably mean?

A. good

B. terrible

C. dull

D. great

42. Representative Lyle Boren of Oklahoma was .

A. a crazy supporter of The Grapes of Wrath

B. among the group against John Steinbeck

C. sympathetic to the migrant living conditions

D. criticized by the first lazy of that time

43. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a reason why The Grapes of Wrath sold well?

A. It well describes people‘s life during that time.

B. The debate over it arose more readers‘ interest.

C. Readers were attracted by the obscenity in it.

D. It was not expensive so people could afford it.

44. Which of the following is TRUE about The Grapes of Wrath?

A. It is about the migrant workers in America during 1940s.

B. The story mainly happened on California‘s grape farms.

C. Its description of the poor and hopeless life was a lie.

D. It remains a banned book in some places of the USA.

45. What can best prove the literature value of The Grapes of Wrath?

A. It survives the time and remains a classic.

Li Hua 第三节:读写任务(共1小题,满分25分)

Since I started high school, there have been many misundertandings between my parents and me. They think I am in puppy love (早恋).

They secretly check my text messages and listen in on my phone conversations. They also talk with my class teacher and keep telling me how bad puppy love is. What my parents have done drives me so crazy that I have had several violent quarrels with them. I know they are trying to protect me from being hurt, but I just feel they are ignoring my need for privacy and independence.

I don't want this to go on, so I have decided to take some action. I on purpose leave my text message and diaries about for them to read. I stay in their sight while I am talking on the phone and avoid joking with boys. I spend more time at home studying than hanging out and trying my best to improve my school performance.

Gradually, my parents have started to calm down. They hardly ever check my messages any more and allow me to talk with male classmates. I am happy that they are beginning to trust me.

In our life, misunderstandings happen at times and bother us. But if we can put our feet into other‘s shoes and take positive action, a misunderstanding can be a chance to achieve better

understanding.

One possible version:

Dear R. Kelly,

I‘m writing to ask for some advice on how to form a band, for you are a well-known musician.

I, as well as three other Chinese boys and two American girls in our school, who are all crazy about pop music, rap and hip-hop, want to form a band, but we lack experience in doing so.

Therefore, I‘d like to know whether we should set the musical style and characteristics of our band to start with. In addition, I wonder if it will be enough for us to practise only at weekends. Lastly, we would appreciate it if you can come up with a name for our band.

I‘m looking forward to your early reply.

Yours sincerely

读写任务(共25分)

One possible version:

From the experience of being misunderstood by her parents, the writer tells us that when we meet with a misunderstanding, we should think about it on others‘ position and try to clear it up actively.

After reading the passage, I can‘t help recalling my own experience that I was misunderstood by some strangers. It was an ordinary day when I was riding to school. Suddenly I saw a boy riding before me knock down an old blind man. The poor man fell down but the boy left quickly, doing nothing to help him. I was shocked and stopped to help him stand up. Luckily he was not injured. But soon there came a crowd of strangers that blamed me for my carelessness. They thought it was I who had knocked down the old man!

I felt quite embarrassed and attempted to explain but no one would believe me. However, at that time, the blind man told the others that it was not me to blame, and that the one who did it was a cyclist! I thanked the man and people around apologized to me.

From this experience, I believe that misunderstandings will disappear if we can patiently try to work them out.
