The cynics say we care for nothing other than grades; and we neglect the need fo r character cultivation. But again, the cynics are wrong. We care deeply for each other, w e cherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth. Last week, thousands of my fel low students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer.
As college students, we are adolescents at the critical turning point in our lives. We all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our futu re, or even the future of our country. I believe in all my fellow classmates. Though we a re still inexperienced and even a little bit childish. I believe that we have the courage an
d faith to meet any challeng
e and take on our responsibilities. We are preparing to assum

Some people will argue that these meetings will leave us with a choice between east a nd west, but I believe that the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. We can make western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our o wn use. We can enjoy the best of both worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.
I love Beijing and Hennan opera because it always reminds me of who I am. But I am also a fan of pop music, especially English songs. So I have combined eastern mel ody with western language. It is called western henna opera.
When two cultures meet, there may be things in one culture, which do not fit int o the tradition of the other. When this happens, we need to learn to understand and respe ct the customs of another culture. Then there are certain things some people may not like. To this, I will say, if you do not like it, please try to tolerate it. To learn to tolerate w

十五、Farewell, Indifference
Who was the most well-known figure in China last month? It‘s Ma JiaJue—the c ollege student who murdered 4 of his roommates. Many people attributed his crime to his poverty and deficient education. In my opinion, his crime also has much to do with his classmates‘ indifference.
Indifference is a terrible disease in today‘s colleges and the whole society. It‘s not rare that two students who have studied together for 4 years have never spoken to each other. It‘s not rare that a student who has been absent from class for several days is not noticed at all. It‘s also not rare that a student who has severe psychological problems is not cared about at all.
Some people may say ?What the students with psychological problems like Ma Jia Jue need is not care but psychotherapy.‖ However, when people are ill, what they need m ost is not only medical treatment, but also care from people around them. Every smile an d every caring word will bring sunshine to their life.
I once heard one of my roommates who was an introverted girl sobbing at mid-ni ght. Being afraid of disturbing her, I sent a text message to comfort her. The next day, s he told me that s he was crying for not being invited to one of her friend‘s birthday party. She thought she was neglected by others. But my message was really comforting which told her someone still cared about her.
What can we do to prevent the tragedy of Ma JiaJue from happening again? Som e people may say ?Let‘s open more psychological courses in schools.‘ and other people m ay say ?Let‘s donate more money for the poor students.‘ But I‘ll say ―My fellow student, let‘s give more love and care to our roommates, our classm ates and every person around us!‖
走出冷漠

One night, I complained to my mom about the lack of time. Finally she said,＂yo u are short of time just because you waste precious minutes on complaints and anxiety. T he point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard, you can always f it in some thing more.＂

Leo Tolstoy once said, everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.
He is right. We always have great plans and dreams in our minds… too ready to achieve something grand that changes the world or benefits all of mankind .For example; we hate pollution and have made up our minds to find new energy sources that keep th e environment clean. Yet we still litter on the ground. We complain about traffic jams, so we plan to build more highways to solve the problem, but it never occurs to us that our failure to follow traffic regulations is the leading cause of this situation. We are so conc erned that the violence in the media has a bad impact on our children, we urge the gover nment to set laws to protect them. But, do we, as adults, set a good example for our kid s? We use nasty words and even spit on the ground in front of them, I dare to say, we harm more!
In my opinion, before we decide to change the world, we had better change ourse lves first. As ordinary individuals, we do not have the power to change the world. But w e can change our habit of littering, spitting, cussing, we can respect the environment arou nd us, we must act as good models for our kids.
If each of us does all of these little things, all of us, millions and millions of ind ividuals together, together we will be strong …strong enough to change our world!
So please, the next time you do something, think how your actions influence not only you, but those around you too, especially our children …and perhaps more important ly…our planet!

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Today I want to tell you a story about one of my friends, a lovely and smart girl who is always ready to help others. Being our gra de leader, she is good at both work and study. In many people's opinion, she is excellent and perfect. But one day she told me she was gloomy and insecure. People around her considered her outstanding and flawless, thinking she could handle everything. But the mo re she thought about herself, the more disappointed she became. She found that she was f
ar from perfection. Last week, she didn‘t do well in her French quiz, and the day before yesterday, she was late for a conference. She felt depressed and frustrated, because she fai led to be a perfect girl without any mistakes.
I was surprised to hear that for I thought she had every reason to be confident. However, the expectation of perfection has become a burden to her. I told her no one co uld be perfect and I suggested she find her own position.
In fact, people are so eager to be perfect that they demand too much of themselv es. They want to be special and unique, and they want to have no defects or weaknesses. However, we can never avoid mistakes and errors. It‘s impossible for us to be a superm an or a superwoman. No matter how successful we are, there are always some flaws. If we hold that everything should be perfect, we would be overcritical.
My friend now has changed her attitude. She accepts her shortcomings but still ke eps a positive outlook. She is even more active and doesn‘t allow the mistakes to hinder her pursuit of excellence. And I think that‘s the way we should be！That‘s all. Thank you!
没有人可以完美无缺

When we are appreciating the passionate melody of Gloria Estefan, we could hard ly imagine that she could return to the stage after her paralysis. In the year 1990, this Cu ban singer was knocked down in a traffic accident, and the doctor declared that she migh t never walk again. But Gloria did not give up and kept up constant exercising. Just one year after the disaster, she stood up again and presented this encouraging song at the Atla nta Olympics.
Whenever I think of Gloria, I can‘t help recalling my memory seven years ago, w hen I first entered university. Naturally shy, ordinary looking, average scores in study, just like an ugly duckling, I seemed to be the least outstanding one in my class. And the su ccessive failures in the beginning led me into despair. ―Am I destined to take the back se at to others?‖ Unwilling to submit to the fate, I paid more efforts on my study as well a s many other activiti es, film dubbing, recital, drama… cause I just want to catch every lit tle opportunity to prove myself. Constant effort yields sure success. Thanks to the competi tion, I received some awards and most of all, I gained the courage and confidence to fac e any difficulties in my life journey.
Life is just like farming, and what you can reap depends a lot on your sowing a nd dedication. Once you have a dream, don‘t be hesitant. Your next difficult step may be the one to the top. Keep going forward, even in the toughest time, and never give up.

You see, Thomas Edison is optimistic; if not, the light of hope in his heart could not illuminate the whole world. Alfred Nobel is optimistic; if not, the explosives and the prestigious Nobel Prize would not have come into being. And Lance Armstrong is also o ptimistic; if not, the devil of cancer would have devoured his life and the world would n ot see a 5-time winner of the Tour De France.
A rose may be beautiful, or maybe not; that depends on your attitude only, and s o does success, so does life. Hindrances and difficulties do exist, but if you are optimistic, then they are only episodes on your long way to the throne of success; they are more b ridges than obstacles! So we are really in lack of me-time which is helpful to keep ourselves from being o ver-stressed、tired and worried.
I do not have as much fun as before and I always miss my childhood. Three hours of homework and two piano lessons one day make me have hardly any me-time to relax m yself. I was once an active basketball player on my school team. But now, basketball, my best friend, I haven‘t touched it for almost two months. Me- time seems to have become a luxury.
Last week, when I heard there was going to be a basketball match between our school and No 1 Middle School, I was so excited that I rushed home and told my parents the news. I asked my father, ― Dad, may I play basketball after school ? The coach says I a m the best guard in our school. If I join the school basketball team, we are sure to beat No 1 Middle School this time.‖ My father showed his dispproval and said, ― Of course y ou can‘t . I‘m disappointed at you. Why do you have such a silly idea?Don‘t forget to wor k hard on your schoolwork and piano lessons.‖ In my parents‘ points of view, playin g basketball is a waste of time.
As far as I‘m concerned, the school assignment to the junior school students is too he avy. To grow into healthy and well-rounded adults, we should be allowed to have more me-time for relaxation. The pressure put on our students by excessive schoolwork can cau se serious stress, which is unhealthy physically and mentally.
My dear teachers, I hope you can assign less homework so we students can enjoy a p eriod of me-time. My dear parents, would you please not follow me and remind me of st udy all the time? Please trust me that I will do my best. My dear friends, why not stop for a while from your heavy homework and do anything you like? It‘s me-time. I do thin k, that a reduction of the current heavy load would be beneficial to us students and to th e society as a whole. Finding me-time will make our life rich, colorful and rewarding.

May I begin my speech by asking you a question? Do you often feel tired, stressed o r worried? If you do have these problems, you are lack of me-time to relax yourself. Psy chologist tell us that stress is caused by too much work or study , heavy responsibilities , and quickened pace of life . In my point of view, if you want to have a healthy mind and body, having your own me-time is very important.
Let me take myself as an example. I was a carefree and outgoing girl before I entered the junior high school. I had much me-time and did anything I like after class. I kept a lovely pet and whenever I have time I played with her happily. However, the situation i s quite different now. When I want to turn on the TV、surf on the internet or go out sho pping with my friends, my parents always look at me seriously and say ― Don‘t forget to spend more time on your lessons. If you don‘t ch erish every minute of your time, other students will catch up with you.‖
So, every day, every moment, I am overwhelmed by all kinds of assignments. I becom e more and more silent and can‘t sleep well before the exams because I‘m dressed and w orried about my results. I feel so tired and how I want to have me time to relax myself.
I long for a period of time that I could walk in a small path in the countryside, sing m y favourite song and smell the essence of nature.
My dear friends, having your own me-time is important. I firmly believe that achiev ements depend on our health. If we want to have a more harmonious state to work better, we should find more *me time* and keep off the overwhelm stresses. Talks, jokes, game s, fresh air or beautiful scenes will be helpful for you. Trust me, you‘ll be more refresha ble and energetic.

I can never forget the summer in 1996. I went through an extremity of despair d ue to my failure in the National College Entrance Examination. It seemed that my dream of being a university student would never come true. One evening my father came and to ld me the story of Steven Callahan, who was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. It was a miracle that he survived and was found 76 days later(the longest anyone has survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone). Later in his narrative he wrote these sentences ―I tell myself I can handle it .Compared to what others have been through I‘m fortunate‖.
Hearing these sentences I felt something important struck me. I belived my life w ould mot be that bad and it was proved to be true. Later during my study in the universi ty I always told myself ―I can handle it‖ when my own goals seemed far off or when m y problems seemed too overwhelming and every time I said it ,I always came back to m y senses.
, I will tell the same story of Callahan to them. I just want to make them believe the y can handle their difficulties because their circumstances are only bad compared to somet hing better. But others have been through much worse. Then they will build up fortitude.
So here, coming to us from the extreme edge of survival, are words that can give us strength. Whatever you‘re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. Compared to what others have been through, you‘re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.

It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the English language.
About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest. When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly speak. I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to s ay. My fears had paralyzed me.
While my passion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public. When my professor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said ―no.‖ I couldn‘t endure yet another painful experience. He looked me straight i n the eye and said something that pierced my heart. I will never forget his words. ―Look,‖ he said,―We all have our fears, and you have yours. You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again. Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will. A winner is not one who never fails，but one who never quits.‖
I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. Then I ma de the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears –and take part in t he competition!
