T: Look at the flag of the U.K. What colour is it? I think it’s very easy for you.

Ss: It’s red, white and blue.

T: Right. It’s the same colour as the flag of the U.S. Look at this picture. It’s called Big Ben. It’s a symbol of London. Do you know London?

Ss: Yes, it’s the capital of the U.K.

T: This is Buckingham Palace. It’s also in London, very famous in the world. But do you know who lives in it?

Ss: … (Maybe Ss will give you a Chinese answer.)

T: Listen! I will tell you. Kings and queens live in it, just as emperors lived in the Palace Museum in the old days.

Write the key words and phrases on the Bb. Explain and have Ss repeat them. Then let Ss make up sentences with the structure: the same … as …

I have the same bike as you.

Kim wears the same coat as Jenny.

Step I Revision and lead-in

Ss read their short passages about the U.K.

A sample conversation:

The U.K. is far from China. It is west of China. In the U.K., they speak English. The flag of U.K. is red, white and blue. It’s the same colour as the flag of the U.S. Its capital is London. It is famous for Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. London will hold the Olympic Games in 2012. Then show a flag of the U.K. and a flag of Australia.

T: (Point to the first one.) What’s this?

Ss: It’s a flag of the U.K.

T: (Point to the second one.)And what’s that? It looks like the flag of the U.K. Especially, the little flag is the flag of U.K.

Then tell Ss that is a flag of Australia. Australia was once the colony of the U.K., so its flag looks like the flag of U.K. Today we’ll learn about Australia.

Step II Discussion

Show Ss a map of Australia.

T: Look at the map. What country is it?

Ss: It’s Australia.

T: Yes! It’s southeast of China. (Explain it to the whole class.)

Let’s discuss in groups: What do you know about Australia? Maybe Ss can’t say anything in English. Tell them Chinese is OK.

Step III Presentation

After listening to the results of the discussion, show some pictures on the screen to introduce the flag of Australia, Sydney Opera House, Canberra, kangaroos, beautiful beaches and so on.

T: Look at the flag of Australia. What colour is it?

T: This picture is Sydney Opera House. It’s a symbol of Sydney. But the capital of Australia isn’t Sydney, but Canberra. This is Canberra. Look at the lovely animal. We call it a kangaroo. Australia is famous for kangaroos and beautiful beaches. Australia always has beautiful sunshine.

Write the key words and phrases on the Bb. Explain and have Ss repeat them.

Step IV Listening

Do some listening practice. Play the tape for the students to listen to L62. Think about the following Qs before listening to the tape:

1.Where is Australia?

2.What do they speak?

3.What’s the capital city of it?

4.What colour is the flag of Australia?

5.What’s it famous for?

Let Ss listen to it twice to try to catch the main sentences in the dialogue. Check the answers. Suggested answers:

1.It’s southeast of China.

2.They speak English.

3.Canberra is the capital city of it.

4.It’s blue, red and white.
