Part I. Reading Comprehension:

Directions:In this part there are three passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and answer the questions. Then, mark your answer on the Answer Shee t with a single line through the center.

( 1 )

A computer is a machine designed to perform work mathematically and to store and select

information that has been fed into it. It is run by electronic means. These machines can do a great deal of hard work in a very short time. A large computer, for example, can add nine thousand times a second, or divide five hundred times a second.

The heart of an electronic computer lies in its transistors. It works thousand times faster than the human brain. A problem that might take a human being two years to solve can be solved by a computer in one minute, but in order to work properly, a computer must be given directions --- it must be programmed.

Computers can be designed for many specialized aims --- they can be used to guide airplane flights, direct cars, even to play chess. Computers play an important part in modern work in many plants and factories throughout the world.

Dear Editor:

While a new school term is about to begin, perhaps we should reconsider the matter of examinations. In July, two writers (letters to the editor) praised the cancellation of exams because they b elieve “tests don’t tell the whole story”.

As a teacher who worked in four countries, I have had the experience that a student who

earns good marks is generally a good student, and that a student’s final mark in a subject is usually a grade average of the year’s work. Of course there are exceptions, but they do not have the frequency that would give an unfair picture of a student’s ability.

The simple fact is that proper class work, diligent exam studies and good marks are almost certain indicators of a stu dent’s future performance. The opposite, almost certainly, incompetence.

There is no acceptable substitute for competition and examination of quality. How can teachers and future officials determine what a student has learned and remembered? Should we simp ly take the student’s word for it? Any institution that “liberates” students from fair and formal exams is misguided, if not ignorant. And surely the “graduates” of such institutions will lack trustworthiness, not to mention being rejected by foreign universities for graduates or other studies.

When all is said and done, I sense that a fear of failure and a fear of unpleasant comparison with others are at the bottom of most ban-exams talk. Excellence and quality fear nothing. On the contrary, they seek competition and desire the satisfaction of being the best.

06. Which of the following will the author of this passage probably agree with?

A.Tests are an effective measure of the student’s abilities.

B.Tests are not effective in measuring the student’s abilities.

C.Tests can only measure some of the student’s abilities.

D.Tests may not be useful for measuring student’s abilities.

07. The two writers mentioned in the first paragraph ________.

A.seem to be worried about the poor marks of their students

B.must have proposed other ways of testing students

C.regard exams as a way of punishing students

D.opposed judging students by the results of exams

08. According to the letter, a student’s final mark ________.

A.is often encouraging

B.often tells whether he likes the subject or not

C.often proves unreliable

D.often gives a fair picture of the year’s work

09. If a student graduated from a university which does not require exams he would ________.

A.have to continue his studies

B.not be admitted by foreign institutions

C.be incompetent

D.often give s a fair picture of the year’s work

10. According to the writer of the letter, those who oppose exams ________.

A. are incompetent teachers

B. fear failure

C. have no confidence in competition

D. both B and C

The world's population continues to grow. There now are about 4 billion of us on earth. That could reach 6 billion by the end of the century and 11 billion in a further 75 years. Experts have long been concerned about such a growth. Where will we find the food, water, jobs, houses, schools and health care for all these people?

A major new study shows that the situation may be changing. A large and rapid drop in the world's birth rate has taken place during the past 10 years. Families generally are smaller now than they were a few years ago. It is happening in both developing and industrial nations.

Researchers said they found a number of reasons for this. More men and women are waiting longer to get married and are using birth control devices and methods to prevent or delay pregnancy. More women are going to school or working at jobs away from home instead of having children. And more governments, especially in developing nations, now support family planning programs to reduce population growth.

China is one of the nations that have made great progress in reducing its population growth. China has already cut its rate of population growth by about one half since 1970.

Each Chinese family is now urged to have no more than one child. And the hope is to reach a zero population growth with the total number of births equaling the total number of deaths by the year 2000.

Several nations in Europe already have fewer births than deaths. Experts said that these nations could face a serious shortage of workers in the future. And the persons who are working could face much higher taxes to help support the growing number of retired people.

11. The world's population could reach _________.

A. 6 billion in 75 years

B. 11 billion in 2075

C. 11 billion by the end of this century

D. 600 million in 15 years

12. Population growth is happening __________.

A. in all countries

B. in a few countries only

C. in most countries

D. mainly in developed countries

13. Which of the following is true?

A. There has been a slower population growth in the past ten years.

B. The world's birth rate is higher than ten years ago.

C. Families are as large as before.

D. Birth control has been well practised in all nations.

14. China has reduced its population growth by _________ since 1970.

A. about 50%

B. exactly one half

C. a lot more than 50%

D. much less than one half

15. According to the essay, China's population control ___________.

A. should be considered a big success

B. is not quite successful

C. is far from being successful

D. is a complete failure

Dear Doctor,

My husband and 1 got married in 1965 and for the first ten years of our marriage I was very happy to stay home and raise our three children. Then four years ago, our youngest child went to school and I thought I might go back to work.

My husband was very supportive and helped me to make my decision. He emphasized all of the things I can do around the house, and said he thought 1 could be a great success in business.

After several weeks of job-hunting, I found my present job, which is working for a small public relations firm. At first, my husband was very proud of me and would tell his friends, "'My

clever little wife can run that company she's working for."

But as his joking remark approached reality, my husband stopped talking to me about my job. I have received several promotions and pay increases, and I am now making more money than he is. I can buy my own clothes and a new car. Because of our combined incomes, my husband and I can do many things that we had always dreamed of doing, but we don't do these things because he is very unhappy.

We fight about little things and my husband is very critical of me in front of our friends. For the first time in our marriage, I think there is a possibility that our marriage may come to an end.

I love my husband very much, and I don't want him to feel inferior, but I also love my job. I

think I can be a good wife and a working woman, but I don't know how. Can you give me some advice? Will I have to choose one or the other or can 1 keep both my husband and my new career?

Please help.

He was acknowledging one of our most distinctive characteristics:the fact that we are social animals whose behavior and personalities are shaped by the groups to which we belong. Throughout life, most of our daily activities are performed in the company of others. Whether our purpose is working, playing, raising a family, learning,or simply relaxing,we usually pursue it in groups, even if the group is as small as two or three people. Out need for human contacts is not merely a practical one;it is a deep psychological need as well. If people are deprived of the company of others for prolonged periods, mental breakdown is the usual result. Even the Geneva Convention(日内瓦公约),an international agreement that regulates the treatment of prisoners of war, recognizes this need. It regards solitary (孤独的)imprisonment for more than thirty day as a cruel form of torture(折磨)。 In its strictest sense, a group is a collection of people interacting together in an orderly way on the basis of shared expe ctations about one another‘s behavior. As result of this interaction, members feel a common sense of“belonging.”They distinguish members from nonmembers and expect certain kinds of behavior from outsiders. 21.By“No man is an island,”John Donne means _____. A.no one can live on an island alone B.a man is not surrounded by sea on all sides C.a man and an island are irrelevan D.no one can live in isolation from other people 22.The fact that we work or even play in groups illustrates the point that ____. A.poeple are different from animals B.Donne recognized the group to which he belonged C.human beings are social animals D.human behavior and personalities are formed by others 23.“Breakdown”as used in Line 6,Paragraph 2 most probably denotes ____. A.separation B.collapse C.analysis D.function 24.According to the passage, what is NOT a characteristic of group? A.There are at least two people in it. B.The members share some common grounds. C.The members work for one purpose. D.The members interact regularly with each other. 25.This passage is mainly about _______. A.the importance of human contacts B.pattens of human behavior C.the importance of human activities D.patterns of human society Passage Two Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.
