Woodblock printing(木版印刷)appeared between about the 4th and the 7th century in China. In 868 AD, there was the earliest printed book. It was in a cave in

Dunhuang. Woodblock printing took much time because every page in a book needed a new woodblock. By the 12th century there were printed books all over China. They included books of Confucius, dictionaries, and books on maths. In 1341 printed books had two colours, black and red.

Although the Chinese learned about printing so early, no one brought printing to other parts of the world for hundreds of years. It is thought that when the great Italian traveller Marco Polo visited China in the 13th century, he saw printed books. But printed books did not come to Europe until 1450 when a German named Johannes Gutenberg invented a printing machine. Twenty-six years later, in 1476, a British man named William Caxton made the first printed book in English. His second book was about the game of chess. Caxton printed about a hundred books and some are still in museum today.
