Over the past decades, with the increase in cultural exchanges, the western movies have gradually entered the Chinese market and held an important position in Chinese people’s recreational life.The film title, being short in form but rich in meaning, has its own cultural, linguistic, aesthetic features. A properly-translated English movie title should be concise, condensed and compact, which can grip the attention of the audience at their first sight and stimulate their association with the plot, reveal the theme or offer some clue. So they deserve careful investigation and consideration from the translator. However, as a branch of non-literary translation, it has not yet received due attention despite their importance.Therefore, in this thesis, I will introduce the general features and functions of English film titles, analyzing the translation techniques largely employed in film title translation. Furthermore, I will examine from the cultural perspective the different versions in Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and analyze the relevant strategies adopted and the effectiveness of these strategies. Sideways tells the story of Miles, a failed novelist, and his soon-to-be married friend Jack, acted by Thomas Haden Church, a washed-up actor. A serious wine enthusiast, Miles is determined to educate his friend on the region’s beloved Pinot Noir before the week is out. Jack indulges his best friend's passion for the grape but is mainly interested in living his last week of bachelorhood to the hilt. Trouble ensues with wine and women, played by Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh and the duo comes to some profound realizations as they come to terms with maturity.It is writer-director Alexander Payne's fourth feature film, following Citizen Ruth, Election and About Schmidt and needless to say, the most successful one.

电影 《杯酒人生》讲的是的是主人公Miles与Thomas Haden 扮演的好朋友Jack的故事。Miles是一个失意的小说家，Jack则是一位不得志的演员。Jack即将在一周以后结婚，所以为了庆祝最后的单身生活，两个老友驾车远行。Miles是个疯狂迷恋葡萄酒的人，他决定用上Jack婚前这一周的时间来培养老友Jack对葡萄酒的钟爱。尽管Jack顺从老友对葡萄酒的热情，但是更想最大限度的尽情享受一下作为单身汉的最后一周的生活。然而相继而来的则是女人和葡萄美酒交织在一起的种种麻烦。这部二重唱最终以主人公对成熟的妥协和深刻理解而结尾。集导演编剧一身的Alexander Payne’s 共执导了四部长片电影。另外三部是公民Ruth，Citizen Ruth；选举Election；About Schmidt关于施密特。这第四部电影《杯酒人生》无疑是四部中最为成功的一部。
【精彩对白】 Maya: You Know, Can I ask you a personal question? 我能问你个私人问题吗？ Miles: Sure. 当然。 Maya: Why are you so into Pinot Noir. I mean, it’s like a thing with you.
你为什么那么着迷pinot Noir。就跟你的癖好一样。 Miles: I don't know, Um, it's a hard grape to grow, as you know, right? It's thin-skinned, temperamental, ripens early, you know. It's not a survivor like Cabernet, which can just grow anywhere and thrive even when it's neglected. No, Pinot Noir needs constant care and attention. In fact, it can grow only in these really specific tucked-away corners of the world. And only the most patient and nurturing of growers can do it, really. Only somebody who really takes the time to understand Pinot Noir's potential can then coax it into its full expression. And then, I mean, oh, it's flavors. They're just the most haunting and brilliant and thrilling and subtle and ancient on the planet. No, I mean you know, cabernets can be powerful and exalting too, but they seem prosaic to me, by comparison. What about you?

He had this big, you know, sort of show-off cellar, you know. But then I discovered I had a really sharp palate. And the more I drank, the more I liked what it made me think about.

Because a bottle of wine is actually alive, and it is constantly evolving and gaining complexity. That is until it peaks, like you ’61, and then it begins its steady, inevitable decline…
