英语翻译

第一单元:

1.Whether 60 or 16,there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite (or God), so long are you young.

2.An optimistic attitude is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. The way you look at life will determine how you feel, how you perform, and how well you will get along with other people. Conversely, negative thoughts, attitudes, and expectations feed on themselves; they become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Pessimism creates a dismal place where no one wants to live.

3 Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

第二单元:

1.Whether you are confused now as to what class to take at the university, or what job to go after in the market place, it is a normal life situation that you are going through. This is also a time to make new friends. A time to make decisions that will shape your future. A time to prove to your parents that they did a good job raising you. Scary? Yes, but you will live. Just like we all lived who went through this time before you.

2.Primary and secondary school will impart to you only some rudiment of knowledge. Even what you learn during the four years of university will be something quite superficial too. A university has often been misleadingly referred to as “the highest seat of learning,”which sounds as if there were no more learning to speak of beyond it.

3. Even though the majority choose to start IT or education companies---fields they are more familiar with---they are young and have few contacts, little credibility and even less money.

第五单元:

1.So what’s wrong with the argument that a dying, painwracked patient should be

able to ask his or her physician for a prescription for a fatal overdose? Practically speaking, the first place, if pain medication is liberally and properly used, there is virtually no patient who cannot be kept comfortable with it. Admittedly, in some cases these doses may have to be so strong that they will lead to respiratory depression and hasten death. But the goal of such medication is to relieve pain, not bring about death. So it will be a crucial problem, if the patient dies from over dose.

2.Everyone agrees that the most fundamental human right is the right to life. Less

talked about is the right to die. This right is implicitly recognized by many countries, including Britain: suicide has been legal here since 1961.But does the right to die include a right to be helped to die when, say, one is paralysed and cannot do it oneself?

3.Two brave women are prompting important changes in Britain attitudes about this

controversial matter. Both wish to die because of the intolerable illnesses they suffer; neither is physically capable of committing suicide; both have gone to court in an effort to be granted the help they need.

第八单元:

1.Unpolluted fresh water is a finite resource and is increasingly in demand as the human population grows. Right now, the world’s supply is being drained faster than nature can replenish it, and the U.N. predicts that demand will exceed supply by at least 30 percent in 2040.

2.The Chinese government has paid great attention to the environmental issues arising from the country's population growth and economic development, and has made protecting the environment an important aspect of the improvement of the people's living standards and quality of life. In order to promote coordinated development between the economy, the society and the environment, China enacted and implemented a series of principles, policies, laws and measures for environmental protection in the 1980s.

3. Since the beginning of the 1990s the international community and various countries have made an important step forward in exploring solutions to problems of the environment and development. The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in June 1992, made sustainable development the strategy for common development in the future, and this won wide acclaim from the governments of all countries represented at the conference.
